Fang Li couldn’t quite believe his ears when a fisherman shared the story behind what would become the Chinese filmmaker’s latest documentary, The Sinking of The Lisbon Maru.
The year was 2014 and Fang was on set in his role as a producer shooting the feature film The Continent — a Han Han-directed road-trip comedy-drama — and it was while heading out from the coast of eastern Zhejiang province towards Dongji Island that the fisherman told a tale that had, for seven decades, remained remarkably untold.
Fang heard of how on October 1, 1942 a Japanese military cargo ship laden with 1,816 British prisoners of war hidden in its hull was on its way from Hong Kong to Japan when it was torpedoed by the USS Grouper.
In the aftermath of the strike — and as the ship slowly sank — Japanese troops locked the POWs inside the cargo holds. But the POWs fought for their lives,...

Jeremy Strong is known for his serious, in-depth approach to playing characters, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have a little fun with his role as notorious lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn in the upcoming film The Apprentice, which focuses on Cohn’s mentorship of a young Donald Trump (played by Sebastian Stan).
The Succession alum, appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Tuesday night, revealed that in one scene that didn’t make the final cut of the Ali Abbasi film out Oct. 11, he took Cohn’s interest in frogs to new heights.
Cohn, Strong said, had a “room of stuffed frogs and frog figurines,” describing the adviser to Sen. Joseph McCarthy as a “conundrum” who was both “one of the worst humans of the 20th century” and a “demonic Peter Pan who never grew up.”

Who knew Victoria Alonso could sing?
Marvel Studios’ president of physical and postproduction, visual effects and animation production broke out into song not once, but twice when she was presented with the Visionary Award at the Outfest Legacy Awards on Saturday night at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
She sang a verse of B.o.B’s “Beautiful Girl All Over the World” to her wife, Imelda Corcoran. Toward the end of her remarks, Alonso warbled “I Am What I Am” from “La Cage Aux Folles” in English and Spanish.
Musical chops aside, Alonso delivered a passionate speech about LGBTQ equality and visibility. “We have tried to stir it up and sometimes the critics are not with us. That’s Ok. That’s Ok,” Alonso said of her work at Marvel. “We thank you for being a critic. We thank you for writing about us. And the fans will decide.

I have to admit that last weeks episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race All-Stars was not one of my favourites. The queens were instructed to over-act in an American Horror Story inspired sketch which to me came across as very slow and dragged out. I can’t comprehend how Kylie was declared the winner as Michelle had to physically get up and demonstrate exactly what sort of performance she expected, as Michelle was one of the producers working on this project. To me, this suggests that Kylie needed more help and support to get performance up to the standard that is expected from All-Stars but she was declared as the winner! However, I totally agree that she won the lip-sync against the secret assassin Manila. Kylie danced circles around Manila with her flips, tricks and gymnastics that were incredible to watch. This meant that Akeira C Davenport was sent...

Looking for some space-based thrills and chills to enjoy this Halloween? Have no fear – or have a lot of fear, actually – Star Trek has you covered! We’ve listed 28 of the scariest episodes from across the franchise in order of just how much they freaked us out, so whether your preference is for deep space exploration, war-torn space stations, or the far reaches of the known universe, there’s something here for you.
This list excludes all of the feature films, which tend to be scarier on the whole as they’re aiming to make an impact on a cinema audience (Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan and Star Trek: First Contact have some especially terrifying sequences). It also excludes The Animated Series and Lower Decks. The Animated Series is seriously under-rated, but it’s bright, colourful style and slightly lighter tone don’t really bring the scares. Lower Decks features lots of blood,...
