"Mary Hartman" Without Louise Lasser was Still Good

After Louise Lasser left "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" in late 1977, most of the original cast remained and the show was renamed "Forever Fernwood". In my opinion there was a very slight fall-off in the show's quality (how could you possibly replace Lasser, the title character?), but the series remained very funny and very good. The writing was just as daring, and the comic situations were just as campy and absurd. I remember watching the final episode on March 31, 1978, after which the show simply disappeared, much to my disappointment. I'd love to see a DVD release of both this show and "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman", but as yet it hasn't happened.

    • Trivia
Gossip columnist Liz Smith reported that the original script for the opener took a much darker turn. Tom Hartman, devastated by Mary's departure, attempted suicide by throwing himself out of their bedroom window. Tragically, this coincided with Mary's return home, and Tom landed on her, killing her instantly. This twist would have definitively closed the door on Mary Hartman's return to the series, but they ultimately decided to leave the option for Louise Lasser to return. According to Smith, the cast cheered when they read this scene.
