A musical about country music star Loretta Lynn’s life is under development with Sutton Foster attached as the star.
Jeanine Tesori, a Tony Award-winning composer who worked on Fun Home, Kimberly Akimbo, Caroline, or Change, Thoroughly Modern Millie and more, is working on the show’s music production. Sam Gold, a Tony Award-winning director who worked on Fun Home with Tesori, as well as recent productions of Romeo+Juliet and An Enemy of the People, is attached as the director.
The musical, entitled Coal Miner’s Daughter, is inspired by the 1980 film and the autobiography about Lynn’s journey from rural Kentucky to becoming a country music star. The stage show will include songs from Lynn’s career, which include “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and extend her story beyond the film.
In 2012, Lynn had announced that Zoey Deschanel would portray her in a Broadway musical about her life.

It could have been a cash grab, but Jeremy Strong prepared for his Dunkin’ Donuts commercial like an actor getting ready to play Hamlet. He spent days thinking about how to make the Super Bowl spot unique before landing on the idea to send up his own reputation for going “full method.” The ad, which was directed by Ben Affleck and features Casey Affleck, finds Strong submerged in coffee grounds, refusing to leave his trailer to film his spot for the breakfast chain until the muse appears.
“I wanted to poke fun at this idea of me as this sententious, self-serious actor,” Strong says. “It was my response to the idea that I ‘don’t get the joke.'”
Ever since the New Yorker published a deep look into his intense approach, Strong has been perceived as one of those actors with a capital “A,” ostentatiously suffering for his art.

“The Haunting of Hill House” star Victoria Pedretti hyped fellow actor – and co-creator of Netflix’s “Anne+” – Hanna van Vliet at International Film Festival Rotterdam Sunday evening.
“You are a leader,” she told her.
“True. I’m a leader,” responded van Vliet, admitting the change in the industry starts with “diversifying the teams.”
“We made ‘Anne+’ without any money, so we had all this freedom and could cast and hire whoever we wanted. People get better at their jobs and later, they will be the ones in power. We have to start small and grow everyone into ‘the big guy.’ Girl. Person.”
While the system is “corrupt,” you have to “know it in order to infiltrate it,” added Pedretti.

Seaview, the Tony Award winning production company behind such Broadway shows as Stereophonic, Romeo + Juliet, Once Upon a Mattress and All In and recent Off Broadway stagings of Hold Onto Me Darling and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, has acquired Manhattan’s historic Tony Kiser Theater, formerly owned by the Second Stage Theater company.
The sale, which was effective January 1, 2025, will see a “refreshing” of the 296-seat Off Broadway venue located in the city’s midtown Theater District and a rebranding from Tony Kiser Theater to Studio Seaview. While the Off Broadway designation will remain – Broadway venues must have at least 500 seats – the acquisition transforms the space from a non-profit venue into a commercial theater.

Production company Seaview has acquired the Off-Broadway Tony Kiser Theatre.
The 296-seat theater in midtown had previously housed productions from the nonprofit theater company Second Stage Theater, which had staged a number of productions there, including the pre-Broadway run of Dear Evan Hansen, but gave up its lease at the end of 2024. Under the leadership of Seaview, the theater will be rebranded into a commercial Off-Broadway theater under the name Studio Seaview.
Seaview has produced a number of Off-Broadway hits including Hold Onto Me Darling, starring Adam Driver, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, starring Aubrey Plaza, and the immersive Sweeney Todd. The production company is also a prolific producer on Broadway and is represented this season by Once Upon a Mattress, with Sutton Foster, Romeo + Juliet with Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, John Mulaney’s All In: Comedy About Love, Good Night, and Good Luck with George Clooney...

In a year marked by personal losses as well as national strife, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about time. Strange how hours can feel eternal, days brief and weeks like they are bleeding into each other so that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.
I had all that in mind while compiling my favorite arts and culture picks from this year. Some of these works consider time on a personal level, like when you pick up a book and can’t put it down. Others ask how much time we have as a society considering the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. A handful think of time more linearly — offering reflections on the past so we might better understand the future.
Here are some works, in alphabetical order, that rearranged time for me:

Exclusive: Amid a surfeit of horror projects heading to next week’s American Film Market, here instead comes a legit blue chip crime-drama-thriller in the shape of James Gray’s next movie, Paper Tiger, which will star Oscar nominee Adam Driver, Emmy and Tony winner Jeremy Strong and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway.
This is the type of project buyers we’ve spoken to this week have been crying out for. Something elevated. Five of Gray’s films have competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Based on Gray’s original screenplay, the story is set to follow two brothers who pursue the American Dream—only to become entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true. As they try to navigate their way through an ever-more dangerous world of corruption and violence, they find themselves and their family brutally terrorized by the Russian “Mafiya.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, which I guess must include the one embroidered on the black mesh singlet worn by Kit Connor. Sam Gold’s Gen Z Romeo + Juliet revival can be chaotic and undisciplined, but it’s also breathless and swoony, angry and violent, tender and sexy Af. Ready to attest to that was the mob of young women and queer kids in my audience who let out a squeal of excitement when Connor took a flying leap into a pull-up to kiss co-star Rachel Zegler on a bed suspended above the stage. This is not your grandmother’s balcony scene, but it’s disarming.

Kieran Culkin is doing less homework than a more novice actor might when it comes to starring on Broadway in a production of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Glengarry Glen Ross.” In fact, until rehearsals start early next year, he’s not doing any homework at all to play broken Chicago realtor Richard Roma in “Leopoldstadt” director Patrick Marber’s adaptation.
“We start rehearsals in early February. I am trying to not — yeah, I am not digging in,” Culkin told IndieWire when asked about the play during a recent interview ahead of “A Real Pain.” “I’ve read [Mamet’s play] twice, and I’m not going to take a look at it until the day before rehearsal.”
Understandably, Culkin is quite busy on the awards circuit through at least February. He’s widely tipped for a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “A Real Pain,” with many, many awards ceremonies to come ahead of the Oscars.

The rest of the world may miss “Succession,” but Jeremy Strong does not. In an interview with The Times of London, Strong says playing tortured media mogul Kendall Roy on the HBO series was hard on him, and while he’s grateful for the experience, he’s glad it’s over. “It f–-ed me up,” the Emmy winner says.
The interviewer describes Strong seeming more relaxed than he has in previous interviews. Since “Succession” ended, the actor says he has “rediscovered play” after he “sometimes lost touch with joy” while working on the show.
“That show was an incalculable gift. The material a banquet. So I miss that. But Kendall’s struggle was difficult to carry for seven years. And there’s just so much more I want to do,” he said, adding that he has no interest in reprising the role for a revival or spinoff. “It’s...

Sarah Snook will be reprising her Olivier-winning performance in “The Picture of Dorian Gray” on Broadway next spring. She plays 26 characters in this acclaimed version of the Oscar Wilde classic. Kip Williams adapted the novel about a vain man whose beauty is his downfall and directed this one-woman show.
Snook first took on this acting challenge in 2020 at the Sydney Theatre Company, where Williams is the artistic director. After she wrapped production on the final season of “Succession,” they took the show to London for a sold-out run. Take a look at the trailer for the West End edition of the show above.

Last night’s performance of the Broadway musical Suffs, the two-time Tony-winning musical about the suffragist movement written by Shaina Taub that counts Hillary Clinton among its producers, was briefly disrupted when a group of self-identified “radical, anti-racist, queer feminists” unfurled a banner from box seats near the stage.
During the performance, as a banner with the words “Suffs Is A White Wash” was unfurled, what appeared to be several protesters in the box seats loudly chanted that slogan and added “cancel Suffs.” Based on cellphone video of the incident, the disruption seems to have last about 15 to 20 seconds before the protesters were ushered out of the box seats by theater staff without incident and the banner taken down.
As the banner was removed, a theater staffer announced over the venue’s sound system that the performance would take a brief pause.

Broadway continued settling in to its post-Tonys summer last week, with box office for most shows slipping at least a bit from the previous week and the total roster trimmed to 30 from 32.
In all, receipts for the 30 productions totaled $34,783,390, down about 7% from the previous week (one of the shows no longer on the roster was the heavy-hitter An Enemy of the People). Attendance for the week ending June 30 was 264,578, down about 6% from the previous week. Even with the small decline, a strong 93% of available seats were filled.
Some notable numbers:
Merrily We Roll Along once again broke the house record at the Hudson Theatre – the ninth time for those keeping count. With its July 7 closing date fast approaching, the revival grossed $2,321,807 for the week; The Outsiders, which won the Tony for Best Musical, set a house record at the Bernard B. To date, there are 24 distinguished individuals (living and deceased) who have won competitive Oscar, Emmy and Tony Awards. The Triple Crown of Acting, as it’s known — see the list below. And there’s no horsing around.
Glenda Jackson became the most recent person to join the club when she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in for “Three Tall Women” in 2018.
While the recent 77th Tony Awards didn’t produce another Triple Crown Acting champion (there was no Tony-less Oscar and Emmy winner in contention), it is possible that some unsuspecting thespian was put on course to becoming the 25th name on the list above. And so the awards plot thickens.

I’ll appropriately start with Sarah Paulson, who accepted the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for “Appropriate.” (It marked her first Tony nomination.

A double-digit slip in the Nielsen ratings notwithstanding, the Tony Awards worked their magic at the box office, with this year’s winners, contenders and show-stealers reporting big increases in attendance and receipts.
Just a few examples: An Enemy of the People, Merrily We Roll Along and Stereophonic posted box office gains in the six figures.
In all, the 32 Broadway shows grossed $37,565,097 for the week ending June 23. That’s a 2% increase over the previous week, a more impressive bump than it seems at first glance: The previous week had 35 shows, including hefty money-makers Ben Platt: Live at the Palace, Uncle Vanya and Mother Play. The absence of those shows last week went a long way in explaining the 4% drop in attendance to 282,752.
Among the numbers:

Merrily We Roll Along, winner of the best revival of a musical and Tony Awards for stars Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe, saw the biggest jump in the industry for the week ended June 23, upping its total gross by close to $330,000 compared to the prior week. The musical, which has been playing the Hudson Theatre since September, grossed $2.17 million and played to 100 percent capacity as it also nears the end of its run on July 7. For those keeping track of such things, nearly 10% – or $3,239,838 – of Broadway’s total $36.8 million box office last week was earned by productions directed by Taymors: The Lion King‘s Julie Taymor and her niece, The Outsiders director Danya Taymor.
And that’s before The Outsiders‘ big Tony-winning night on Sunday. Two of the musical’s four awards were Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical. (Lighting and sound for musicals were the other two.)
As usual, stalwart The Lion King was Broadway’s top earner for the week, grossing $2,216,034. The Outsiders took in $1,023,804. Those numbers tally up to 9% of the Broadway total for the week ending June 16.
In all, the 35 Broadway productions grossed $36,851,329 for the week, a slight increase of 2% over the previous week but a solid 12% over the same time last year. Total attendance was 293,997, about even with the previous week but up 13% year-to-year.

On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The ceremony saw wins for Sarah Paulson, Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe. Several notable faces took the stage as presenters, including Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Nick Jonas and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
This year’s nominations raised some skeptical responses over the omission of the fan-favorite revival of The Wiz and Appropriate‘s nomination for costume design. The ceremony was also deemed “dull” by many viewers citing numerous on-stage speech fumbles and a lack of stage presence from presenters and award winners.
Regardless, fans were excited to see their favorite faces take home their wins. Stereophonic and Alicia Keys‘ musical Hell’s Kitchen swept the categories with 13 nominations. Paulson returned to the stage after 13 years and snagged a win,...

Brooke Shields, the epitome of 1980s grace and glamour, has continued to dazzle on the red carpet with her sophisticated and timeless style. Her most recent appearance was at the 2024 Tony Awards, where she put her best fashion foot forward… or not.
Shields typically dresses in muted colors, so seeing her in a vibrant yellow gown was refreshing. I also thought the color looked good on her warm tan complexion. What bothered me was her choice of shoes—yellow Crocs instead of traditional red-carpet heels.

The production had already broken the previous Circle in the Square box office record of $917,008, held by the 2014 production of The River starring Hugh Jackman, more than 15 times. Enemy routinely sells out and posts weekly grosses in excess of $1 million.
The revival of Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama is in its final week of a limited engagement, set to play its final performance this Sunday, June 23. When it closes, it will have played 23 previews and 112 performances since beginning previews Tuesday, February 27.

A few key stories have emerged with the dust settling on the 77th Annual Tony Awards. One, we should have seen “Merrily We Roll Along” when we had the chance (it closes July 7!). Two, it’s great that Brooke Shields has broken the Crocs-red carpet barrier. And three, why does Eddie Redmayne singing directly into the camera give us the willies?
With that out of the way, though, awards-obsessives can crack out their abacuses and start making charts to see who is getting closer to achieving Egot status.
Egot, of course, stands for Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, Tonys, and while Sunday night didn’t put anyone over the top, we have a few celebs who can start giving it serious thought.
Sarah Paulson won her first Tony for Best Actress in a Play, for Branden Jacobs-Jenkens’s dysfunctional family drama “Appropriate.” Paulson is a seven-time Emmy nominee and one-time winner for “The People vs.

No awards show makes it to the end without a few surprises, and tonight’s Tony Awards on CBS had a whopper: It went off without a hitch.
The Pluto TV pre-show, not so much. But more on that in a bit.
With Ariana DeBose returning to host for the third time, the 77th Annual Tonys was like a how-to for awards shows, with nearly all of the performances by the Best Musical nominees (and the year’s Best Play winner Stereophonic) showcasing each production at its best. (Which one fell a bit short? Read on.)
DeBose kicked things off with a made-for-the-show musical number, sounding terrific even if a performance from one of the actual Broadway shows might have been a wiser option. DeBose has said this will be her final Tony hosting gig, at least for a while, and she’ll be missed: She knows how to hold the spotlight,...

Hell’s Kitchen was the first of the nominated musicals to get a performance at the 2024 Tony Awards, and the number featured Alicia Keys and Jay-Z reuniting to perform their hit “Empire State of Mind.”
But the semi-autobiographical show, for which Keys composed the score and helped arrange the music and served as a producer, ended the night losing the top prize of best musical and winning only two awards despite going into the 2024 Tonys with a leading 13 nominations.
Hell’s Kitchen had been tied with Stereophonic as the most-nominated productions this year, but the play won five awards, including best play, on Sunday night. Hell’s Kitchen’s wins were in the categories of best actress (Maleah Joi Moon) and featured actress (Kecia Lewis) in a musical.

There were a ton of “Hollywood names” at the 77th Tony Awards on Sunday night, which undoubtedly helped to elevate interest in a nationwide telecast that is always a bit of a tough sell, given that it celebrates shows that relatively few people outside — or even inside — the tri-state area have actually seen.
Among the A-listers on hand this year were Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, returning as the host for the third time; presenters such as Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Hudson, Oscar winners both; performers including Alicia Keys, Jay Z, Pete Townshend and yet another Oscar winner, Eddie Redmayne; and worthy honorees like Jeremy Strong (best actor in a play for An Enemy of the People) and Sarah Paulson (best actress in a play for Appropriate), each of whom has an Emmy at home, and Daniel Radcliffe (best featured actor in a play for Merrily We Roll Along), the...

The 77th Tony Awards gave those of us cuckoo for kudos the thing that we love most about show biz celebrations.
Surprises.
Throughout the course of the evening, the envelopes revealed a number of out-of-left-field selections. (See the Tony Awards winners list.) That made watching the reactions of the recipients all the more fun. So who were the most visibly shocked Tony winners? Here the Top 5, along with their corresponding “shockmeter” rating.
1. Danya Taymor, Best Director of a Musical for “The Outsiders.”
Most Broadway insiders were expecting Maria Friedman to roll away with the prize for “Merrily We Roll Along.” So it’s no wonder that the dazed Danya literally jumped out of her seat and jolted to the stage. The untamed Taymor did clearly write her speech in advance — but preparation is the hallmark of any good director. Shockmeter rating: 9.5.

The Outsiders and Stereophonic took home the top prizes of best musical and best play at the 77th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday.
The best musical race had been one of the closest categories heading into Sunday’s ceremony, with The Outsiders, a story about young boys growing up in a rough setting, based on S.E. Hinton’s best-selling novel, and Hell’s Kitchen, featuring a score by Alicia Keys, seen as the top contenders, amid other contenders including Water for Elephants, Illinoise and Suffs. The two battled for awards throughout the night, with The Outsiders picking up a key win for director Danya Taymor and Hell’s Kitchen earning first-time acting wins for Maleah Joi Moon and Kecia Lewis.
Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along took home the prize for best revival of a musical, while Branden Jacobs-Jenkins family drama Appropriate won the Tony Award for best revival of a play.

The No. 1 boy is on top once again.
Jeremy Strong took home his first Tony award Sunday night, winning the Best Actor in a Play Tony for his role as Doctor Thomas Stockmann in “An Enemy of the People.” The play — originally produced in the 1880s — centers on a whistleblower who discovers that there is poison in the town’s water supply. His brother (Michael Imperioli) and the town want him to be quiet lest he hurt the burgeoning local economy. Needless to say, there are plenty of current real-world parallels about truth tellers, science, and health vs economy issues.
“I want to thank the ushers and the front of house staff who see me walking in every day looking like I’ve just been run over by a truck, and see me walk out somehow looking even worse,” Strong joked in his acceptance speech. “Sam [Gold] and Amy [Herzog], you guys,...

The first Broadway revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s infamous flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will win the most Tony Awards of any show at the upcoming 77th annual ceremony, according to our official odds in all 26 categories. The original production, which ran for only 16 official performances back in 1981, earned a single nomination for Sondheim’s score, but this time around it will claim six trophies including Best Musical Revival, three performance awards, Best Director and Best Orchestrations.
The blockbuster musical revival will best by two a duo of plays – David Adjmi’s “Stereophonic,” the zeitgeist-grabbing production about the tumultuous recording sessions of a band on the brink of superstardom, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins‘ “Appropriate” – that will each win four trophies apiece. Shaina Taub’s suffragist musical “Suffs” is right behind with three victories. Nominations leader “Hell’s Kitchen” will score only two wins, while nominations runner-up “The Outsiders” will likely go home empty-handed.

With important discussions raised recently about whether (and which) new categories should be added to the Tony Awards competition — Hair, Wig & Makeup? Casting? Ensemble? Projections? — allow me an unimportant one: Best Coin Toss, because that’s what so many predictors will rely on for a season crammed with excellent nominees.
Sarah Paulson or Jessica Lange? Coin toss. Appropriate? Purlie Victorious? An Enemy of the People? Coin toss, coin toss, coin toss. Five cast members of Stereophonic? Get plenty of change.
But Tony predictions are as much a part of the annual Broadway tradition as red carpets and go-for-broke musical numbers. So with that in mind, I’ll get on with the coins, the hair-splitting and more than a few passionate opinions. Here is Deadline’s annual roster of predictions for the 2024 Tony Awards, airing this Sunday evening on CBS.

When Tony voters looked at their ballots for best musical in 1960, they must have felt lightheaded. They were tasked with choosing a winner among the latest Rodgers and Hammerstein (The Sound of Music), a political drama that would go on to win the Pulitzer (Fiorello!), a new kind of psychological biography (Gypsy), and an uproarious fairy-tale comedy (Once Upon a Mattress). I’m not sure if any of the 2024 nominees for best musical will stand the test of time quite like that stunning lineup. But as was true 64 years ago, there are at least four celebrated contenders vying, all equally convincingly, for the top prize.
Part of what makes this season’s best musical category particularly tricky to predict is the volume of productions that aren’t on the ballot here: At various moments throughout the season, in which 15 new musicals opened (and six have already closed), it would have...

“I think ‘Stereophonic’ has taken off in a really once-in-a-lifetime way within the theatre community,” shares Sam Eckmann about the show he believes is the frontrunner for Best Play at the 2024 Tony Awards. He and I recently reconvened to discuss all 11 of the play categories ahead of the 77th annual ceremony on Sunday, June 16, and we didn’t need much time to debate the top category with David Adjmi’s “Stereophonic” so far out front to prevail. Watch our full Tony Awards predictions slugfest above.
We are feeling similarly confident about Branden Jacobs-Jenkins‘ “Appropriate” taking home the trophy for Best Play Revival. Sam points out that since this play has never been on Broadway before – it is considered a revival under the Tony Awards “classics” rule – the playwright will be on the ballot and eligible to win, which will help push the show over the finish line because “he’s a really admired writer.

The Broadway revival of An Enemy of the People, starring Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli, has recouped its $5.5 million capitalization.
The milestone, announced by producers Seaview, Patrick Catullo and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, comes after only about four months on Broadway, with the play breaking the Circle in the Square’s box office record (of $917,008) 16 times. The production began previews at the Circle in the Square Theatre on Feb. 27 and is set to close June 23.
The production, which opened March 18, has maintained more than 100 percent capacity for the entirety of its run and has grossed more than $1 million most weeks. The average ticket price for the show has generally been around $150, which puts it somewhat on the higher end within the industry, but still well below average ticket prices commanded by shows such as Merrily We Roll Along, which announced the recoupment of its $12 million capitalization in March after about six months on Broadway.

Don’t expect to see Jeremy Strong at the next Roy family reunion.
The Golden Globe winner said any said any possibility of a Succession revival has been “happily put to rest” for him more than a year after the critically-acclaimed HBO series ended its four-season run.
“I’m sure there’s a desire for more [Succession]. I would really pass that buck to [creator] Jesse Armstrong,” he told People ahead of the 77th Tony Awards.
“But I think in terms of the role that I played, he came to his terminal point,” added Strong. “So for me, that’s something that is very happily put to rest.”
Strong won his first Emmy Award and Golden Globe for starring as Kendall Roy on Succession, which followed the grown Roy children as they fought for the keys to their father Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) media empire,...
