Actor and writer Mark Gatiss lobbied unsuccessfully for the series to devote an episode to screenwriter Nigel Kneale. He was told Kneale was not a "big enough figure".
In 2017, Melvyn Bragg said he had 17 or 18 regrets about the series. He said one of his regrets was that they never did a programme on Paul Robeson.
