U.K. outfit Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to “Bury the Devil,” a one-shot supernatural horror-thriller that recently wrapped production at an isolated location in Canada.
The supernatural-tinged home invasion tale centers on a nurse who discovers her latest patient may be harboring dark secrets. The film was written by John Petrizzi and Brad Hodson, with veteran genre producers Philip Kalin-Hajdu and Benoit Beaulieu (“Turbo Kid”) shepherding the project.
Director Adam O’Brien opted for an ambitious single-take approach to ratchet up the tension. “This film depicts the most harrowing 90 minutes of our protagonist’s life, and I felt that the most visceral way to really feel this was to do a single-shot film,” O’Brien said. “We are with her every step and mis-step she takes – through the unravelling of the mystery to the horror of her discovery. It’s a fun, twisty roller-coaster ride that puts a new spin on exorcisms.

In many walks of life, a combination of recency bias and genuine progress makes it easy to think that the latest thing is also the greatest thing. However, this thought process doesn't apply to the martial arts movie genre, where a man who died in 1973 continues to be the yardstick all other stars are measured with -- and generally fall short.
Bruce Lee's death at the age of 32 cut short his life but not his legend. It can be easy to forget that his "Bruce Lee era" was just the final, star-making phase of his career. Before breaking through with his English name on "Green Hornet," Lee appeared in 20 Hong Kong movies, often using his Chinese name Lee Jun Fan and stage names like Lee Siu Lung ("Lee Little Dragon"). This means that a true Lee aficionado has plenty of comparatively obscure material to wade through -- from the 1941 film "Golden Gate Girl,...

2017's Iron Fist is far from the top of the list for many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its Netflix era. The story of Danny Rand leaving K'un-Lun to take back his birthright at Rand Enterprises isn't one that many would be enticed to see out of the gate. But the use of his martial arts skills and the fabled iron fist should've been enough to create a stellar first season. However, the lack of impressive martial arts scenes, a lead that acted more adolescent than many would've liked, and a lack of the iconic Iron Fist suit put the show at a severe detriment that even a more successful second season couldn't fix. Nevertheless, like with all things,...

Martial arts and Hollywood are a match made in entertainment heaven; ever since Bruce Lee donned his iconic yellow jumpsuit in Game of Death, the action genre has never looked the same. While over-the-top spectacle makes for enthralling entertainment, a fundamental reason why martial arts films are so beloved is because of how their action is grounded in reality. There's a reason stories like The Karate Kid have continued to captivate audiences decades after their release, still inspiring sequels and spin-offs decades after the titular "kid" has grown into a man. Martial artists and stuntpeople are just humans utilizing their physical abilities to their maximum potential— what could make for a more aspirational action movie?...

Bruce Lee was a famed martial arts expert who completed only a handful of films before his untimely death in 1973 at the age of 32. Let’s take a look back at all 6 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco, CA, in 1940, Lee was raised with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He began appearing in several films as a child, often in small bit roles, but abandoned acting to pursue a career in martial arts.
His hiatus from the screen didn’t last long. In 1966, Lee was cast as Kato in the short-lived television adventure “The Green Hornet,” later making appearances as the character on “Batman.” He played a small role in the mystery film “Marlowe” (1969) as a kung fu fighter who destroys private eye James Garner‘s office before suffering a tragic demise.

Legendary Hong Kong martial arts star and filmmaker Sammo Hung gave a masterclass at the Tokyo International Film Festival, where at age 72 he demonstrated that while he now uses a cane, his charismatic abilities and innovative spirit remain. Hung held an engaging talk where he shared lessons from over 60 years in the industry developing martial arts cinema.
Born into a performing family, Hung’s journey began with training at Hong Kong’s prestigious Peking Opera school. “The training was very rigorous,” Hung recalled. “We learned fundamental movements so by graduation you could perform nearly any move.” This training laid the groundwork for his future success in martial arts films.
Hung’s film career started early, with his debut at age 9 in the 1960s. A pivotal moment came in 1973’s “Enter the Dragon” where Hung fought Bruce Lee in the opening scene. After Lee’s tragic death, Hung took on choreographing...

In a career that has spanned seven decades, Hong Kong action movie legend Sammo Hung has seen a lot, and moreover, his body has been through a lot. So it wasn’t a surprise to see the 72-year-old use a cane as he took the stage for a masterclass session at the Tokyo International Film Festival. But as he captivated an appreciative audience, the confidence and humor that have seen Hung through his illustrious career in martial arts movies shone bright.
Born into a showbiz family, Hung’s career began as a child actor while at the China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera school in Hong Kong. He made his film debut in the early 1960s, aged nine. A slightly grainy, black and white clip of the film showed a fresh-faced boy Hung, to coos from his assembled admirers. “Training at the school was very severe. We learned all the fundamental movements.

Action movie star Wesley Snipes is also an experienced martial artist who is skilled in multiple styles. His celebrated combat abilities supported his performance as one of the superhero genre's founding fathers in the original Blade trilogy that kicked off in 1998. Before that, he starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in Demolition Man and became synonymous with exciting action.
Blade actor Wesley Snipes would not have had as successful an acting career without his passion and commitment to training in martial arts. Many of his most famous parts utilize his impressive martial arts prowess, with major projects opening the door for more black actors in action roles. Snipes reprised the legendary Blade in Deadpool and Wolverine, 20 years after his trilogy ended, merging the Fox Universe of Marvel characters into the MCU, and giving comic book movie audiences one last taste of his martial arts skills and highlighting his talent as a physical performer.

Kill Bill's action sequences draw inspiration from classic kung fu movies by Shaw Brothers, with nods to their iconic styling techniques. The iconic yellow tracksuit worn by Uma Thurman pays homage to Bruce Lee's costume in Game of Death, with a strong revenge plot connection. Tarantino's Easter eggs in Kill Bill, such as the Deadly Viper assassins and Pai Mei character, reflect his deep appreciation for kung fu film history.
It's no secret that Quentin Tarantino is a huge fan of martial arts films, and references to famous movies abound in Kill Bill, his epic revenge tale split into two movies. Aside from his non-chronological plots and violent action sequences, pop-culture references are one of Tarantino's most famous trademarks. Kill Bill draws its references from a wide net, but most influential are the classic kung fu movies produced by studios like Shaw Brothers.

The Princess is an action-packed film with Joey King as a warrior princess fighting for survival. The movie blends medieval storytelling with engaging martial arts, empowering and captivating. Disney's premature removal from Hulu hindered growth, limiting audience reach and stifling deserving films.
Hulu's The Princess starred Joey King as an unnamed princess fighting for her survival. However, the film was unceremoniously dropped from the streamer last year when Disney purged content from Hulu and Disney+. Due to several contributing factors, the film was never able to get the solid audience it deserved.
The film had nonstop action, and King delivered as a princess with excellent survival skills. Like last year's Damsel, the film subverted the damsel-in-distress trope by ensuring the princess was no helpless maiden. It smartly puts King at the center of the action. The Princess was well-received by critics, with a 62% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. King delivers...

Plot: A deep dive into the Bruce Lee exploitation film craze that dominated grindhouse cinema after the iconic martial artist’s death.
Review: Flashback to the year 1994. On my 13th birthday, while cruising the video store for a movie to watch with my friends at my birthday sleepover, on a whim, I decided to rent Enter the Dragon. I was never the same. After watching it, I enrolled in Karate classes and tried to learn as much about Bruce Lee as possible. While cruising those same video store aisles, I was very confused by how many kung-fu movies had his name and image on the cover, given that, even back then, I knew there were only four Bruce Lee movies, plus Game of Death. And why were they constantly misspelling his name? Who was Bruce Le? Or Bruce Li? Or Bruce Liang?

It is an understatement to say that Bruce Lee left a massive impact through his short filmography. After being denied a lead role by the Shaw Brothers studio, Lee signed onto an upstart company called Golden Harvest whose subsequent films made him into an international star. It can feel that Robert Clouse must have made a faustian pact back when he helmed “Enter the Dragon”. For all of that film's iconic success, he seemed doomed to be forever searching to recapture it to slowly diminishing returns. From “Game of Death” to “The Battle Creek Brawl”, Golden Harvest would return to him frequently when co-producing stateside. So it was no surprise in 1990 that they would hire him one last time. Eureka Entertainment brings those final features to blu ray and once again Cynthia Rothrock throws down in “China O'Brien”.

Quentin Tarantino does not view Kill Bill as two separate films. That should be acknowledged upfront as fair. After all, it is this detail which allows Tarantino the ability to claim Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood as his ninth instead of 10th film (thereby delaying any obligatory early retirements). And to be sure, Tarantino shot Kill Bill as one epic vision that was only encouraged to be broken up by, ahem, Harvey Weinstein while Tarantino was finishing up principal photography.
So while the story was released as Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, they’re two sides of the same tale. Be that as it may, there’s no denying that they’re two incredibly different sides. Whether a creative choice made in post-production after realizing he had hours more of running time to play with, or because the filmmaker was already at his most indulgent...

Real-life tough guy actors don't just excel in action films - they come from various backgrounds and genres. Bruce Lee's martial arts prowess influenced Mma; his legacy lives on through Jeet Kune Do. James Caan, Chuck Norris, Steven McQueen - tough guys onscreen and off, with military or fighting backgrounds.
From the time that the big theatrical action movies began to gain popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, filmmakers set out to find actors who not only looked the part but were also real-life tough guy actors. From names like Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee, who came into Hollywood as legitimate tough guys, to actors who developed real-world fighting skills after getting their start, many tough guy personas on screen are so endearing to watch because they're authentic.

Before video games truly advanced, the arcade was where it was at. Much like Saturday morning cartoons, it’s one of those obsolete ideas from the past where you get why it’s gone, but damn if it didn’t represent some wonderful times. Arcade games seemed like the zenith of what a video game could look and feel like. Consoles were great and all, but you knew that if you were getting a port of an arcade classic for your 8-bit or 16-bit system, you weren’t getting the full package.
One of the genres that truly felt like the soul of the arcade experience was the beat ‘em up. The idea that you, a couple of friends, or even some complete strangers could join together at a cabinet and go on a trek to beat up as many enemy thugs as possible until you either ran out of quarters and couldn’t continue,...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Monkey Man” below.]
Move over John Wick, there’s a new martial arts action hero: Dev Patel’s titular underdog in his directorial debut, “Monkey Man.” Inspired by the ancient legend of the Hindu deity Hanuman, the invincible Monkey God, Patel creates his own mythic avenging angel in the tradition of such Korean action films as “Oldboy” and “Man From Nowhere.” Lowly yet scrappy and full of rage, Patel’s Kid is determined to take down the sinister elite of the fictional Yatana, Mumbai’s version of Gotham, and kill the corrupt cop, Rana (Sikandar Kher), who brutally murdered his mother and scarred him for life.
Patel (a martial arts competitor and teacher in London in the early 2000s with a passion for the film genre), trained rigorously with fight coordinator Brahim Chab (“The Foreigner”) and performed all the fights himself. Although he embraced Chab’s intricate choreography, he also...

Bruce Lee was a martial arts polymath, incorporating various styles into his fighting repertoire. The impact of Lee's martial arts scenes on cinema and fighting styles is undeniable and far-reaching. Lee's creation of Jeet Kune Do showcases his ability to adapt and innovate in the world of martial arts.
Bruce Lee practiced several martial arts styles over the years. Having acquired an interest in martial arts at a very young age, Lee spent most of his life developing his skills as a fighter. While most martial artists tend to devote their time to mastering a single way of fighting, Lee always evolved, picking up moves, stances, and ideas from other styles. Unlike the biggest actors in the martial arts genre, Lee never had a black belt and only spent a very short period as a student in a martial arts school.

Jackie Chan frequently collaborated with actors like Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung in many of his iconic movies. Chan also worked with stars like Michelle Yeoh and Anita Mui, building connections from his time as a stuntman. From Bruce Lee to Andy Lau, Chan's career is marked by numerous co-stars, creating a rich tapestry of martial arts cinema.
Jackie Chan was the most recognizable Hong Kong actor of all time and throughout his filmography, which included appearances in more than 150 movies, he has frequently collaborated with many of the same actors. A major reason for this was that the studio Golden Harvest, who played a major role in introducing Hong Kong action movies to the world, often relied on the same pool of actors that included Chan. This meant, Chan was often cast opposite the same performers, in particular his close collaborators Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung, who collectively became known as the Three Dragons.

Quentin Tarantino has always been a film lover's filmmaker. He has constructed his movies with overt and loving references to a near encyclopedic knowledge of previous directors' work. Critics decry him as a magpie, filching bits and pieces from other movies to build his own. But that overlooks the style and flourishes with which he works, and his uncanny way of combining his various references into something entirely new. He is perhaps the quintessential postmodern director, and his deliberate citations invariably add to a vision that couldn't belong to anyone else.
Sometimes, his references are reasonably open and can be spotted by any viewer with a reasonable movie literacy. Examples include Uma Thurman's yellow tracksuit in Kill Bill, Vol. 1 -- an open nod to Bruce Lee's outfit in Game of Death -- and the vaunted briefcase in Pulp Fiction, which riffs on the central MacGuffin in 1955's Kiss Me Deadly.

After a snowy Wednesday in Park City dampered some of the arrival fanfare of previous festivals, Sundance soaked up the sun on Thursday’s opening day. With plenty of powder to lend an idyllic backdrop to selfies and social media updates, the festival crowd was buzzing in line for the day’s largest film opening: “Freaky Tales,” taking the coveted early evening spot at the Eccles Center. Dozens of stand-by hopefuls were left in the cold for the popular event though, which kicked off the festival with a riotous screening.
The film marks a Sundance homecoming for director Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, whose breakout hit was the 2006 Sundance favorite “Half Nelson”; the pair most recently helmed the decidedly not indie 2019 superhero flick “Captain Marvel.” “Freaky Tales” is a return to their scrappy roots: An anthology horror-thriller-comedy that pays tribute to ’80s Oakland, the film stars Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis,...

The poster design of John Carpenter's 1978 slasher "Halloween" is scary, subtle, and quite brilliant. The poster was painted by artist Bob Gleason who once said in an interview with Fangoria Magazine that he came up with the design while working for the Santa Monica-based graphic design firm B.D. Fox and Friends. Gleason noticed that the grooves that circumvent a pumpkin could be shadowed in a jagged, knife-like shape, and that he could use that image in conjunction with an actual knife. The poster features the hand of Michael Myers holding a large curved kitchen knife, melting into a repeated pattern that forms the face of a jack o' lantern.
Gleason's managers weren't too fond of his idea, feeling that Michael Myers' white-faced mask should be placed front-and-center, not the knife. A few days later, however, Gleason's managers came around and let him do the poster he wanted. It took him three or four days.

Quentin Tarantino has long made it clear that he would direct ten films as a filmmaker and then hang up his pretty impressive director's hat. In March of this year, Tarantino announced that he had completed a script called The Movie Critic, which is rumored to be his final film and will reportedly be based on a movie reviewer who wrote for a pornographic magazine. The details are still very vague, but the film is sure to showcase all of Tarantino's love as a filmmaker.
He has been viewed as a true encyclopedia of movies and a true movie fan who happens to direct pretty fantastic films. Scanning across his filmography, fans are likely to have their own personal favorites, but in 2003, the director released what is arguably his true masterpiece in Kill Bill: Vol.1. It is an understatement to say that Bruce Lee left a massive impact through his short filmography. After being denied a lead role by the Shaw Brothers studio, Lee signed onto an upstart company called Golden Harvest whose subsequent films made him into an international star. As his tragic death came on the cusp of kung-fu movies being introduced to the global market, a question lingered about who would replace Lee.
Director David Gregory has crafted a comprehensive exploration of what followed Lee’s passing; a sub-genre named Bruceploitation which focused on casting Bruce Lee lookalikes to star in imitation martial arts films. The resulting cash-in features were made to exploit the deceased star’s international popularity during a time when intellectual property laws were less strict, with even Golden Harvest joining in with Game of Death, an unfinished feature from Lee that was stitched together for a release with a body double,...

It's no secret that George Lucas' original vision for "Star Wars" was heavily influenced by Japanese cinema, specifically the samurai, or chanbara, sword-fighting films of his youth. "Seven Samurai" and, of course, Akira Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" were direct inspirations for "A New Hope" and the misadventures of C-3Po and R2-D2. Any student who has studied martial arts will also be able to see a direct link between the ancient techniques of Japanese swordsmanship and the fighting style of Jedi Knights throughout the entire saga. Beginning with the classic duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader aboard the Death Star, the original film's stunt coordinator Peter Diamond incorporated the basic strikes, parries, and blocks that are taught in kendo. Even the concept of balancing one's internal Qi ("chi") energy became the foundation for the Force.

Dear readers, before I can move forward with my review of We Are Zombies, it’s only right that I inform you that I will be very biased in my assessment of this movie. First off, I’m a big fan of the works from filmmaking trio Rkss, and their debut feature Turbo Kid is one of my all-time favorites. Secondly, I went to college with some of the cast (though I won’t reveal who) and have seen them grow from background to principal characters. Finally, the film was shot around my home city of Montreal and I can pinpoint exactly where many scenes took place.
But I am not alone in my love for both Rkss and We Are Zombies. Its world premiere was chosen to be the closing film for this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Before it even screened to a sold-out room, there was a...

The greatest tragedy of Bruce Lee’s all too short life was that he didn’t live to see the premiere of Enter the Dragon. Lee died on July 20, 1973. Enter the Dragon was released six days later.
Four years prior, Lee made a vow to himself that he titled “My Definite Chief Aim.” Handwritten in cursive with his characteristic flair, he wrote “I, Bruce Lee, will be the first highest paid Oriental super star in the United States. I will give the most exciting performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor.” Throughout his career in Hollywood, Lee struggled to make his way, fighting against prejudice and exclusion at every step, in hopes of reaching his goal. And yet he never lived to see the breakthrough success of his masterpiece.

In director Chad Stahelski's eyes, the entire John Wick franchise is indebted to Bruce Lee's legacy.
Speaking with Empire to memorialize the 50th anniversary of Enter the Dragon and Lee's untimely death, Stahelski recalled the impact Lee's performance had on him as both a stuntman and filmmaker. "He understood storytelling. He got how to take a fight and put story beats within the choreography. He understood more than just martial arts and philosophy; he understood cinema," he said, adding, "Go back and watch his fights — he's saying a lot in there! It's easy to say, 'Oh, yeah, Bruce was great at fighting,' but if you go back and watch what he's doing in those fights, you'll see the acting moments in there too. I think that's underestimated about him."

Director Chad Stahelski believes that the John Wick franchise owes a debt to Bruce Lee's legacy due to his understanding of storytelling and ability to incorporate acting moments in his fight scenes. Stahelski highlights Bruce Lee's on-screen persona, describing it as a combination of innocence and arrogance. He praises Lee's vulnerability, which influenced other actors and franchises like John Wick. Despite his untimely death, Bruce Lee's impact as an influential action star and his role in popularizing martial arts films in the West cannot be underestimated. His legacy continues to inspire modern films and TV shows, including the John Wick franchise and the series Warrior.

Andrew Davis’ Under Siege is usually considered Steven Seagal’s best movie. However, at the time, most critics singled out Tommy Lee Jones’s performance as the baddie, Strannix, as a scene-stealer. According to Nick de Semlyen’s new book, “Last Action Heroes”, Jones dominating the film was intentional, as Seagal was somewhat reluctant to sign onto the movie. To help entice the star, his screen time was kept to only about 41 minutes. As Davis tells de Semlyen, “Between the Pentagon stuff and all the other cutaways, Tommy is actually in the movie more than Steven.”
According to Davis, Jones took the lead in reworking his bad guy, who he remembers was “flat” and “boring” in the original script. “Tommy said, ‘Why can’t I be a rock n’roll kinda guy? It was a little weird, but Tommy made it work.” Indeed, Jones’s performance would elevate his career,...

Blackie Onassis, drummer for the alt-rock act Urge Overkill during their ’90s heyday, has died. A spokesperson for the band reported his passing to the Los Angeles Times, but no cause of death was given.
Onassis (real name John Rowan) joined Urge Overkill in 1991, playing alongside founding members Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser. He appeared on their albums The Supersonic Storybook (1991), Saturation (1993), and Exit the Dragon (1995).
While the Chicago-based band impacted alternative-rock radio with such songs as “Sister Havana” and “Positive Bleeding,” they are perhaps best known for their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” which famously appeared in the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. They also got major exposure when they opened for Nirvana on the latter’s tour in support of Nevermind.
In an interview with Spin magazine in 1992, Onassis said of the band, “We are here to resurrect the era...
