From the beginning of its first season, True Detective has been steeped in a specific type of the supernatural, often called Lovecraftian horror. Sometimes known as "cosmic horror," this particular form emphasizes the horror of the unknowable or incomprehensible. In the world of True Detective, these concepts were given names like Carcosa and The Yellow King while also being symbolized in recurring images like that of a crooked spiral.
Sure, investigative work was the driving force behind each season of True Detective's plot. However, the foreshadowing of potential otherworldly events set this series apart from others in many fans' eyes. Over the years, the show's use of these elements has ebbed and flowed, and these are the ten episodes where the supernatural has made itself heard the loudest.

Catching the killer wasn't the point of "True Detective" season 1. In fact, even when the killer was caught, that was far from the end of the story. Fans of that first season may still be haunted by Marty Hart's (Woody Harrelson) acknowledgment in the final episode, "We ain't gonna get them all. That ain't the kind of world it is." "Them," in this context, refers to a group of influential Louisianians who had been committing horrific crimes against women and children for decades. And the fact that most of them remained at large was perhaps the most disturbing part of the whole season.
In the eighth and final episode of "True Detective" season 1, Marty and his detective partner Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) find and kill Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler). Childress was the son of William Lee Childress, who in turn was the illegitimate son of Sam Tuttle, patriarch of...

The singer, 36, has been hard at work prepping for Christmas with her family to make all of her 3-year-old son Titan Jewell‘s holiday wishes come true this year including picking out a tree, sipping hot cocoa and doing carols.
“I’m Captain Christmas, I’m so excited,” Rowland told People at the Baby2Baby Holiday Party Presented by Toys”R”Us at Montage Beverly Hills on Sunday.
“Titan’s favorite song is ‘Jingle Bell Rock.’ And if I hear that damn song one more time I’m probably going to beat myself.

Five years ago, Skyfall made its way into U.S. theaters. It remains the most financially successful James Bond movie of all time and, in the eyes of many, it's the best entry of the Daniel Craig era (though, Casino Royale might have something to say about that). While we wait for Craig to make his last turn as 007 in James Bond 25, let's take a look back at Skyfall and what makes the movie so special in the long, storied history of Bond on the big screen.
Let's rewind the clock a little bit and try and put ourselves in the shoes we were wearing in 2012. The last James Bond movie fans had seen was the much-maligned Quantum of Solace in 2008. Coming off the truly fantastic Casino Royale, which is quite possibly the best debut movie for a Bond actor in the history of the franchise, the movie was,...

Adam Levine and wife Behati Prinsloo are animals – at least when it comes to Snapchat!
Between hitting the road with Maroon 5 and juggling a tight schedule with The Voice, Levine and the Victoria Secret model, who are expecting their second child next year, never seem too far apart thanks to the photo-sharing platform. But, hey, that’s what lovers do.
People caught up with the iconic band’s lead guitarist James Valentine, who revealed the hilarious Snapchat-inspired cover from their just-released album Red Pill Blues was “another one of Adam’s ideas.”

Michael takes a look back at early days of the web, with a 28k modem, a GeoCities webpage, and a webcam stream of a coffee pot...
GeoCities websites, instant messaging, free AOL discs and blocking up the phone line - today we’re gonna party like we’ve just connected at 56 kbit/s. That is, we’re going to take a nostalgic look at the early days of the World Wide Web.
Okay, okay - we know that the Internet existed before the web and that there were other ways of connecting to distant computer networks before the Internet was even established. What we’re interested in is a period that began around the middle of the 90s when the World Wide Web first became a popular destination. Let’s get something straight though - just because we miss something, it doesn’t mean that we want it back.

Há Terra!I want to apologize for providing this Wavelengths avant-garde preview a little later than I might've liked. Hell, given that it's been over a week since movies died, I'm not exactly sure how much more kindling I can chuck onto the pyre. But I should remark that compared with previous years' iterations of the Tiff Wavelengths series, 2016 does feel a bit...off. I'm chiefly referring to the experimental short films here. (My second part, addressing the Wavelengths features, will be along in a matter of days.) Make no mistake. There's plenty of great work in this year's programs. But I do feel that the disparity this year between the truly exceptional films and the mediocre-to-not-very-good ones is markedly high.I enjoy films, and more than this, I enjoy enjoying them. I hardly get my kicks by being a nattering nabob of negativity. But programmers have to work with what is available to them,...

As with their Convergence section, the New York Film Festival offers an expanded view of the current cinema with yet another installment in their Projections series, a showcase of recent developments in and classic examples of experimental work from around the globe. These are hard to pin down as fitting particular types, and the only qualifier I can give is that whatever I manage to see from Projections stands as some of the most fascinating, enriching work I encounter at Nyff every given year.
I’m particularly excited about a few things here: two new Nathaniel Dorsky shorts, for one thing, and The Human Surge, a Locarno title and recent Tiff selection that we (positively!) assessed as being “pretty much a film that, by nature, is unlovable.” But that’s a very small pack that stands out, not least of which is because they have individual program slots. The Sean Bean-fronted Gothic cop show shuffles successfully off into the cold beyond for its closing chapter...
This review contains spoilers.
1.6 Lost And Found
So many potential plot directions had been set up for the finale of The Frankenstein Chronicles. The mysteries of missing children, stitched corpses, suspicious surgeons and untrustworthy politicians had stretched so coiled-tendon tense that the final snap promised an electrified punch. That the hit didn’t really ever come, leaving us flinching and “…huh?” was confusing, unfulfilling… and ballsy as hell.
This is how ITV mystery-thrillers are supposed to go – weird murder/murders, good casting, red herring, red herring, red herring, wrong person framed, good guy turns out to be bad guy, showdown in last ten minutes, hero wins/dies, credits roll, audience satisfied: can move on with lives. Lost And Found didn’t get the memo – instead, blowing its Big Bad reveal early on,...

“To the unflinching eye of the intellectual soul,” toasted foursome Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Sir William Chester, and some other guy called James Hogg in the flashback that opened this week’s episode The Frankenstein Murders. In one of the most easy games of ‘one of these things is not like the other’, it didn’t take a mad scientist to figure out which of the four was going to draw the short straw (that’s not a euphemism; they actually drew straws) when it came to being the guinea pig (that is a euphemism) for William’s shiny galvanism equipment. Episode four of The Frankenstein Chronicles, feat. Sean Bean, threw yet more potential killers into the suspect pool...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 The Fortune Of War
Taking its title from where the series left us and Inspector John Marlott last week, episode four of The Frankenstein Chronicles took us right back to the grubby Fortune of War pub. The 19th century’s answer to Harvester isn't somewhere many people would voluntarily return to, but Marlott had work to do, hoping to bump into snatcher, killer, stitcher n’ seller suspect number one “Billy the Child Catcher”. The leads that led Marlott here: deputy Joseph Nightingale knows that dead bodies are transported through the tunnels snaking underneath the Fortune of War; grave robber Pritty knows which locals are dealing in death to pay the rent; and witness Flora knows Billy was the one who snatched missing child, Alice. Unfortunately,...

The Frankenstein Chronicles is a neatly stitched drama with a compelling, sympathetic lead in Sean Bean's John Marlott...

1.3 All The Lost Children
“What would we not do to defeat death, Mr Marlott? Might we not defy God’s laws in order to be reunited with those we love?” asks The Frankenstein Chronicles’ Mary Shelley this week, under some gentle interrogation regarding the murdered, mutilated and missing children in the capital. At this stage in his investigation, Marlott has an intriguing list of leads, taking in literary legends like Shelley – still a controversial figure in the nineteenth century, having been accused of blasphemy in the creation of Frankenstein (there’s thanks for you) – and lowly grave robbers like Pritty, still on the run after escaping the watch of deputy Mr Nightingale last week.

The new CBeebies Clangers series is a rare thing: an advert for the wisdom of remaking old childhood properties…
When it was first reported on this site that Smallfilms’ sixties and seventies stop-motion classic children’s series Clangers was next for the remake treatment, the fears of many were wittily summed up by one commenter:
“Surely in this age of self-aware/horribly loud/jitteringly insane Adhd-driven kids’ programming, those in charge of the £s are unlikely to sign off on the kind of gentle, quiet whimsy in which Oliver Postgate specialised, and which made Clangers so magical? Or they’ll insist on introducing a new teenaged son Clanger who has a flying skateboard or something? And who speaks like a marketing hack’s idea of what a teenaged boy speaks like? Or the Iron Chicken will lay exploding eggs?” - StefMo.

We return with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes details on a Wes Craven art exhibition, the first sighting of Megafoot, a 100 zombie films graphical print, first photos from Australian Horror film, Barrow, an interview with actor, writer, and filmmaker Sean Stone, and much more:
The Horror Legacy of Wes Craven Exhibit Details: “Wes Craven has been feeding our collective horror consciousness since 1972, when his first feature, “The Last House on the Left,” debuted. That film was gritty, raw and terrifying, it still causes a guttural reaction some 40 years later. In his career, Wes has created some of the most memorable moments in horror cinema, from the torture scene in “The Serpent and the Rainbow,” to the Johnny Depp’s explosive scene in “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” to the first glimpse of Michael Berryman’s savagery in “The Hills Have Eyes.

Cohle's life of solitude in 1995 is becoming more social – but his present-day counterpart is fiercely alone, in a drama that's increasingly introspective even as its plotting gathers pace

Television is so infested with series about cops, fictional and true crime, that to find one that steps out from the mould is a special circumstance. In its first three hours, HBO’s True Detective has separated from the procedural tropes by letting the crime take a back seat and the characters command the direction of the show. The biggest setback of a show with a look and pace so distinct from other detective series is that any element that seems like a rehash of what we can find elsewhere on the tube is only more glaring. While Matthew McConaughey remains as unhinged and magnetic as he ever has been as Rust Cohle, Woody Harrelson’s Martin Hart is just not as fascinating as his partner. Both actors are terrific, but the more “The Locked Room” gravitates on Hart’s home drama and adulterant ways, the more it turns into any other cop show.

True Detective, Season 1: Episode 2 – “Seeing Things” Written by Nick Pizzolatto Directed by Cary Fukunaga Airs Sunday nights at 9 on HBO
The series premiere of True Detective set up a very intriguing show, due several factors, including its switch between 2012 and 1995, its unique central characters, and the locale it was set in. The series is further set apart by the fact that all the first season episodes are written and directed by the same individuals, ensuring that their particular vision of the show does end up onscreen. With last week’s episode promising an offbeat series, this week delves further into what makes the two detectives at the centre of the story tick, in another compelling episode that furthers the possibility of a supernatural element to the tale.

Review Michael Noble 21 Jan 2014 - 10:05
True Detective is about more than just two men investigating the death of a woman. It’s about relationships between men and women...
This review contains spoilers.
1.2 Seeing Things
Marty Harte’s dad had no truck with exploring his feelings. Back in his day, guys didn’t just ‘air their bullshit to the world’ and for men like him, real men, emotions are a concept by which we measure our manliness. It’s bad enough even to acknowledge them, worse still to actually address them.
TV, cinema and the hard boiled school of crime fiction have long-standing fixations on the hyper-masculine environments that men build for one another. As crucibles of conflict they make great settings for drama. They’re less suitable for the exploration of emotion. The standard archetypes of this fiction, whether cowboy, soldier, gangster or cop, all adhere to a model...

After a strong, stimulating pilot episode last week (read the review here), True Detective returned with a second episode that further steeped us in the characters of Rust Cohle and Martin Hart. Headway is made on the murder investigation, but True Detective continues to emphasize the characters over the plot. Spoilers follow for the second episode “Seeing Things”.
Last week, the 1995 murder of Dora Lange brought State Police Detectives Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Hart (Woody Harrelson) together for the investigation while their disproportionate attitudes kept them distanced outside of work. A connection was made between the Lange murder and the shady disappearance of the young Fontenot girl years earlier, but other than that very few pieces of the puzzle can be placed by the young detectives. The pilot episode also introduced a part of the story unfolding seventeen years after the Dora Lange murder, and in 2012 Cohle and Hart are seemingly estranged,...

About midway through the second episode of True Detective, it becomes clear that the series isn’t as much about reaching a particular destination as the title might suggest. There are still plenty questions regarding the whodunit aspect of Dora Lange’s murder, but in ‘Seeing Things,’ the investigation soon feels like an accompanying aspect that will be picked up later; it is the vehicle from which Nic Pizzolatto sends his characters into the study of one another and of themselves. By the time Cohle has had his third hallucination in the span ...

“Seeing Things” was about the search for truth and the avoidance of it. It was about being known, and wanting to remaining unknowable. It was about the occult — not in the supernatural sense of the term, but in the Latin, as in ‘that which is clandestine, hidden, concealed,’ and how our understanding of a person or thing changes when secrets are revealed. So it was about Spoilers!
The “heroes” of True Detective were illuminated. Marty Hart, sunshiney moral superman, was exposed as a hypocrite, control freak, and garden variety philanderer, and jammed himself up with shame and deception. His circa...

Another haunting, lyrical hour of True Detective this week, where we learned a little more about the unfortunately departed Dorie, but also dug deeper into Rust and Martin's lives. It's incredible the amount of storytelling that True Detective has already done in these two short hours. The strangeness of the ritualistic crime is overshadowed by the strangeness of Rust himself. He ruefully delivers facts about his life, but fills them in with starts and stops, especially when the facts turn painful. Like Martin, it's easy to both be repelled by and deeply engrossed in Rust as a person, and "Seeing Things" added even more layers to his complicated appeal. Hit the jump for more. Once again, series creator Nick Pizzolatto perfectly captures the languid tones of coastal Louisiana, and the desperate lives of those living in the margins. The combination of Pizzolatto's writing and Cary Joji Fukunaga's direction throughout...

A review of tonight's "True Detective" coming up just as soon as I've got some self-loathing to do this morning... "I know who I am." -Cohle In the Cohle hallucinations that provide "Seeing Things" with its title, "True Detective" introduces yet another element that should arguably push the show into the realm of cartoon — here's our beautiful, tortured cop hero, who sees lights on the highway as if he's in a Michael Mann movie, and who sees birds over a crime scene flying in the same pattern tattooed onto Dora Lange's body — and yet like the names, the monologues,...

Only two episodes in and True Detective is already one of the most visually striking television shows ever to hit cable. Few programs in recent history have put as much emphasis on its setting as an extension of the characters, as HBO’s drama tells so much about the bedraggled state of its detectives just by focusing on the hurricane-ravaged Louisiana woods they drive through. Torn apart but still standing, Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) are haunted and guilt-ridden, hoping for normalcy and comfort in a dark, deranged community. Their police cruiser, notably the only car seen on the road, cuts through the destruction at top speed. Can they work together to mend a destroyed community and their own equally tattered psyches?
Hart and Cohle are not typical television heroes: they are moody and morose, deeply unhappy with their circumstances and sometimes even at odds with each other.

New York -- From the people who brought live Metropolitan Opera performances to a movie theater near you comes the next big-screen cultural attraction: museum art exhibits from around the world.
It begins Thursday with a retrospective devoted to the portraits by Edouard Manet from the Royal Academy of Arts in London, screened to 450 theaters across the U.S. and about 600 around the globe, with many locations scheduling encore broadcasts.
Two more exhibits are already lined up: a June retrospective on the art of Edvard Munch from the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, and an October showing of works by Johannes Vermeer from the National Gallery in London.
Unlike the live opera broadcasts, the art presentations are slickly produced documentaries giving viewers a VIP guided tour of current or recently ended exhibitions from noted art historian Tim Marlow, who lingers on each of the displayed works and explains why they are special.

November sweeps are right around the corner, which means that all our favorite TV shows are stepping up their game in order to impress viewers and keep those ratings coming for advertisers. "The Vampire Diaries" is pretty spectacular on a regular basis, but we can expect even more Omg moments as we move into the holiday season. Here are five things to expect from the upcoming episodes!
1. A Stelena motorcycle ride. In this week's episode, titled "The Rager," Stefan takes Elena on a "thrilling" trip to show her that life as a vampire can still be fun. They may be immortal, but they still wear helmets. We don't get it, either. In the same episode, we'll see Damon teaming up with Meredith and (gasp!) Klaus, while Rebekah tries to rekindle her flirtation with Matt (and gets her claws into our newest ingenue, April).
2. A Delena keg party. As we previously reported,...

To mark the fact that a Japanese film was chosen as the official opening film for the festival, the local Japanese consulate sent a representative and (better still) sponsored a Japanese dance and an awe-inspiring Japanese drum performance. When I say that it was a percussive assault, I mean that in the most complimentary way.

Ratings are up for SyFy, and the channel is developing three new shows: “Ghost Projekt,” “Seeing Things” and an as-yet-untitled Robert H. Wolfe drama.
Of the three, “Ghost Projekt” would probably interest Splash Page readers the most because it’s based on a comic book series. Released in 2010, the Oni Press-published series stars Will Haley, an American weapons inspector, and Anya Romanova, a Kgb agent, as they track down a very dangerous stolen weapon. They’re often described as being an “unlikely” team, but of course those teams are the most fun in fiction. Coming to us from Joe Harris and Steve Rolston, the comic has released five issues.
The Hollywood Reporter gave us the heads up on this development, but there’s not a whole lot of news on it yet. Brett Matthews, a writer for “Supernatural,” has been hired both as a script writer and an executive producer for “Ghost Projekt.

After a tumultuous year that saw the end of Stargate Universe and heralded the demise of the fan-favorite Eureka, Syfy has miraculously emerged a winner – in the ratings, at least.
The genre network has posted its highest third-quarter ratings in history, and to celebrate, it has announced it will be bringing in three all-new original programs: Ghost Projekt, Seeing Things and an untitled drama from Alphas creator Robert H. Wolfe.
Ghost Projekt comes from the Oni Press graphic novel of the same name by creators Joe Harris and Steve Rolston. The supernatural spy series centers on Kgb agent Anya Romanova and U.S. weapons inspector Will Haley, as the two are forced to work together after a dangerous Cold War-era secret weapon falls into the wrong hands at a remote Siberian research facility. Listen up, Syfy fans! The network that brought you "Dinocroc vs. Supergator" has just announced three new scripted series in development. Syfy has had huge hits in shows like "Warehouse 13," "Eureka," "Alphas" and "Haven," so we're excited to see what they'll do next.
We're also hoping they don't cancel these before we get a chance to love them. We're still angry about the cancellation of "Stargate Universe," "Caprica" and "Eureka." Sci-fi shows very often have a target on them from the get go, even on a station that is supposed to be devoted to the genre.
Syfy caused uproar from genre fans by adding wrestling to the schedule, setting off a debate about whether it's high ratings were even from sci-fi fans. We'd love to hear your feelings on the subject, so feel free to sound off on this one.
