Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.
Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…
Opera
In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.
Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

Tony Shalhoub discusses the dark tone of Mr. Monk's Last Case in an exclusive interview. The challenge was balancing the darkness with the comedic elements of the movie. Arguably, the most moving scene involves Adrian seeing his wife Trudy and other deceased victims he's solved cases for over the years.
Warning! The following contains Spoilers for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie
Not even Covid-19 can slow down Adrian Monk as he investigates the murder of his stepdaughter’s fiancé in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. Actor Tony Shalhoub returns as everyone’s favorite genius-level, Ocd detective, in order to discover if the world’s richest man, Rick Eden (James Purefoy), orchestrated the bungee-jumping tragedy. And Shalhoub discussed the dark tone of the Peacock original film, which is based on the TV series Monk, in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly:

Anthony Perkins in Edge Of Sanity (1989) will be available on Special Edition Blu-ray June 21st from Arrow Video
Anthony Perkins builds upon his legendary status as cinema’s seminal psycho in Edge of Sanity, a delirious conflation of Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic horror novella ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ and Jack the Ripper’s real-life reign of terror over Victorian London.
When his experiments into a powerful new anaesthetic go hideously awry, respected physician Dr Jekyll (Perkins) takes off into the night, casting aside the shackles of upper-class propriety as he disappears into the shadowy decadent demimonde of Whitechapel in pursuit of sensual pleasures under the guise of ‘Mr Hyde’. As his wife Elisabeth (Glynis Barber) passes her time in charitable work, rehabilitating the district’s fallen women, Hyde is drawn into an escalating cycle of lust and murder that seems to know no bounds.

It's time to examine the career and legacy of paranormal pioneer Hans Holzer.
Born in Vienna on January 26, 1920, Hans Holzer was like many children, fascinated by the ghost and fairy stories he heard in his youth. But those tales, told by his Uncle Henry, which he retold at school to the disapproval of adults, stayed with Holzer. Ghosts became his life’s work as one of the world’s most famous figures in the paranormal field.
Before his death in 2009, at age 89, Holzer authored nearly 140 books on the paranormal, extraterrestrial life, witchcraft, and more, beginning with 1963’s Ghost Hunter. During a career that famously involved the “Amityville Horror” house case in 1977, Holzer also taught parapsychology at the New York Institute of Technology, and both appeared on, and consulted for, Leonard Nimoy’s late 1970s show In Search Of… And interestingly, actor Dan Aykroyd claimed an obsession with Holzer,...

Robert Walker Jr., son of actors Robert Walker and Jennifer Jones, died Thursday, his family confirmed to the official website for the television show “Star Trek.” He was 79.
Walker Jr. is best remembered for playing the titular Charlie Evans in the “Star Trek” episode “Charlie X” from the show’s first season in 1966. His character was a teenage social misfit with psychic powers. The episode was written by D.C. Fontana who also died earlier this week.
Walker Jr. also starred in a handful of 1960s pictures including “Ensign Pulver” with Burl Ives and Walter Matthau, and “Young Billy Young.”
He was born in Queens, New York in 1940, by which time his father was just launching his career as an actor. Walker Sr. was of course best known for playing the role of murderous psychopath Bruno Antony in Alfred Hitchcok’s “Strangers on a Train.” The film was released shortly before...

Before Joe D’Amato became Joe D’Amato, he was Aristide Massaccesi, a respected cinematographer and camera operator. As such, he was largely responsible for the look of films ranging from low-budget spaghetti westerns to gialli such as Umberto Lenzi’s A Quite Place to Kill and, most famously, Massimo Dallamano’s What Have You Done to Solange. Massaccesi first co-directed several small films before directing the war film Heroes in Hell as well as the giallo Death Smiles on a Murderer, both in 1973.
But D’Amato, who would use his famous pseudonym for the first time in 1975, would become (in)famous for his extreme horror titles and adult films beginning in the late 70’s and continuing until his death in 1999. He is perhaps most famous for his string of over-the-top gorefests like Beyond the Darkness (Aka Buio Omega), Anthropophagus, and Absurd as well as his...

Living abroad as a youth certainly had its advantages; the Odeon theatre in Mandeville, Jamaica showed everything from Hollywood blockbusters to Shaw Brothers’ Kung Fu epics to Italian exploitation and horror. Of course I took in as much as my ten year old mind could possibly take; I’m sure a film like Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977) played there, but alas, I missed it. Thanks to Severin Films, this Joe D’Amato sleaz-o-rama is finally available for my (still) ten year old sensibilities to behold.
And while my inner adolescent should be jumping up and down at what is accomplished here - it is essentially soft core adventuregrue porn – the sum does not quite equal the parts for my grumpy grown up persona. The sex and the slaughter don’t sit particularly well together, and I sure could have used a lot more of the latter. But what’s it all about,...

Nunsploitation is definitely not a strong suit of mine; going through a list to see which ones I’ve viewed has left me feeling ashamed and repentant. So after three Hail Mary’s and four Our Father’s I knelt down and witnessed The Other Hell (1981), Italian grimemaster Bruno Mattei’s take on fervid religiosity, rabid dogs, satanic offspring, and enough Catholic iconography to set a priest on fire. Which is a thing that also happens.
Released in Italy in late January and rolled out around the world throughout the year (North America would have to wait until ’85), The Other Hell is pretty much what I’ve grown to love about Italian horror of the ‘70s and ‘80s – outlandish characters, loopy plotting and jaw dropping moments – but is so far and above what I’ve seen of Mattei’s other work that it gives me a nosebleed.
So, let’s get thee to a nunnery,...

It’s Halloween time, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that you’ve heard some Edgar Allan Poe verse in the past few weeks. “The Raven,” most likely. If you had been alive during the time when Poe was still living, your chances of hearing “Once upon a midnight dreary…” would have been just as good.
“‘The Raven’ was a massive hit. [Poe] was a huge celebrity during the time ‘The Raven.’ Everybody knew ‘The Raven.’ People did parodies of ‘The Raven.’ Kids memorized it in school,” actor and literary superfan Denis O’Hare explained in a recent interview
In Eric Stange’s new PBS film “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive,” O’Hare plays Poe in surreal, reimagined moments, performing the writers’ work to empty rooms and slinking through the streets of Poe’s eventual home city of Baltimore under cover of darkness.

As horror fans, we are constantly seeking out the new and the different. Because the genre is marked by so much sameness—sequels, franchises, remakes, copies of copies—it can sometimes be a challenge to find those horror films that truly carve out their own space. They don’t even have to be great movies, necessarily; many times, “different” is enough to make us happy.
With that in mind, here are 10 horror movies currently available on the terrific streaming service Shudder that are, if nothing else, different from almost anything else you’ll watch this October. They vary in quality from title to title, but what even the roughest among them lacks in technical polish, it more than makes up for in sheer maniac insanity. After you’ve cycled through all your favorites this October, why not add a little Wtf to your lineup?

Joe D’Amato was a filmmaker that I only knew (other than his reputation for skin flicks and sleaze) from the one movie of his I had seen, Anthropophagous (1980), aka The Grim Reaper, aka "The One Where The Guy Eats The Baby Fetus." And going by that, I had a lot of trepidation upon opening Severin Films’ brand new Blu of Beyond the Darkness (1979), D’Amato’s exploration of necrophilia, icky maternal obsession, and stuffing the ones we love. I needn’t have worried. Beyond the Darkness, aka Buried Alive, aka Buio Omega, is not only vastly superior to Anthropophagous, it gives me hope that the D’Amato catalogue is filled with further gems to uncover. I mean, they’re not All porn, right? Right?

Halfway through the first five-year mission, Captain James T. Kirk has grown complacent, even bored. The thrill of discovery and adventure seems to have worn thin and he’s restless, ready for a change. Still in his thirties, young by 23rd century standards, he seems to be having a midlife crisis ahead of schedule. At much the same time, Spock yearns to join the remaining Vulcans in order to perpetuate the species, concluding this is his destiny.

Despite being generally well received by critics and fans alike, Star Trek Beyond is in danger of being viewed as a box office flop. The sci-fi adventure flick hasn’t finished its theatrical run just yet (it opened in China on September 1), but analysts reckon it’s going to have to rake in $350 million to recoup the budget and promotional costs, and since it currently sits at around $244.5 million, that’s going to be tough.
Of course, there’s always a decent chance it’ll find a bigger audience on home-media. Paramount has announced that Star Trek Beyond will be released to Digital HD on October 4, followed by a Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and 4K Ultra HD release on November 1st. Below you’ll find the full list of extra features, as well as the cover art:

Star Trek: Beyond is hitting Blu-Ray. We’ve got the details on the release.
So okay even I was a skeptic on Star Trek: Beyond but I’ve big enough to admit that I had a lot of fun watching the movie. I do love that these stories are still being told and loved how it’s been reintroduced for this new era. Well the home release is just around the corner and it’s got a lot packaged with it.
So first off in case we forgot this is the third movie in this new franchise telling and if you missed out there will be a three pack of all of the films. Now the Blu-Ray pack is going to have over an hour of extra content including.

There are countless programs that support emerging filmmakers in their development and now up-and-coming horror directors have one of their own. Shudder, a streaming service backed by AMC Networks that specializes in horror content, has just announced the first 11 participants of their inaugural Shudder Labs. Selected from a pool of over 300 applicants, directors are taking part in a week long workshop designed to develop, add and hone their skills as they get ready to take the next step in their careers working in the genre.
“Like a vampire, I feed off of the enthusiasm of young talent; it is invigorating to encounter new voices in the horror genre and to find out what motivates young minds to explore the art of the macabre,” said director and Master-in-Residence Larry Fessenden.
Throughout the course of the program, the fellows will be able to learn from and work with a team of Masters-in-Residence, headed by Shudder curator Sam Zimmerman, Fessenden, writer Clay McLeod Chapman and AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan. The program’s benefits, however, aren’t contained to the program alone. After the filmmakers have left the lab, they will each receive $5000 in grants and be mentored by a Master-in-Residence for an additional year.
Shudder Labs is currently running from June 13th to June 18th at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York.
The filmmakers, and their projects, of the first ever Shudder Labs are:
“As the Dust Settles,” Mike Olenick
An asteroid carrying the seeds of alien life crashes down in the neighborhood where a young couple is buying a house from a dishonest realtor. When the couple settles into their new home, they unpack a secret that will change the lives of everyone in the neighborhood: the truth about what happened to the home’s previous owner.”Mike Olenick focuses on forbidden desire, reproduction, transformation, and outer space in his projects. Mike’s films have streamed on Mubi, aired on Dutch television, and won awards at the Slamdance Film Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival. He studied photography at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and has edited films and videos with Guy Maddin, the Quay Brothers, Kelly Reichardt, Sadie Benning, and Jennifer Reeder.”“Beyond the Darkness,” Shane Wheeler
A modern sorcerer must save his friends from a dark dimension, but to succeed he must overcome his own suicidal depression.
“Trained as a biologist, Shane Wheeler wrote his first screenplay while working on a fishing boat in the Bering Sea. Since then, he’s written, directed, and produced a number of award-winning shorts, as well as features Captive of a Death Mask (2012) & Stabbing with Frank (2016). Wheeler is a filmmaker raised in Brownstown, Michigan.”
“Black Bats,” Rick Spears
Feeling cast out from society, two teens begin a relationship under the belief that they’re transforming into monsters. What begins as a fantasy ends with horrific consequences as they both lose touch with reality.
“Rick Spears is mostly known for his comic book writing, having published eleven graphic novels and numerous comics including Teenager from Mars and Dead West. Rick has also written and directed a handful of award-winning short films. Black Bats will be his first feature.”
“In the Night,” Joshua Erkman
A 24-year-old running from his past starts a new job picking up the dead for a mortuary and begins to suspect powerful sinister forces are closing in on him.
“Joshua Erkman is a Los Angeles based filmmaker, a USC graduate, and drummer for La punk band Lamps.”
“Lovespell,” Courtney and Hillary Andujar
A teenage girl in Hawaii casts a dark spell that unlocks something sinister within herself.
“Courtney and Hillary Andujar are identical twins who grew up at punk shows and in diners in Texas. Courtney is a writer and designer who has collaborated with artists and activists such as Yoko Ono, Paul Chan, and Julian Assange. Hillary is an art director who has worked internationally with Tim Burton, David Lynch, and The Wachowskis.”
“Polybius,” Hunter Stephenson
It’s the summer of 1984 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The only thing booming louder than the arcades is the aircraft over Fort Bragg. A hip babysitter named Tiffany is determined to show the brothers Carmack the parent-free weekend of their lives. But her reality is bleeped when the younger brother, a vidiot ‘sperger named Palmer, is snatched after encountering a pylon-like arcade cabinet. Joined by a skeleton crüe, it’s up to Tiffany to kick ass, chew bubblegum and fore’s destroy this trippy gamer-gateway to hell.
“Hunter Stephenson is a Scottish punk. He is also a writer/producer based east of the Rockies. His recent Noisey doc-series Hot Sugar’s Cold World received the Honorable Mention at Hot Docs 2015, and was executive produced by David Gordon Green, Jody Hill, and Danny McBride.”
“The Eyes,” Will Forbes
In 1970’s Upstate New York, there is a local legend of The Eyes, a spirit in the woods of the Catskill Mountains that consumes the souls of the lost and weary. When the favorite uncle of three local kids dies suddenly and under mysterious circumstances at the edge of those woods, the kids set out on a mission to discover the horrifying truth.
“Will Forbes has been composing and producing music for visual media for nearly a decade, until he realized the best way to achieve his goal of scoring horror films was to start making them himself. Originally from Upstate New York, he currently lives in Inglewood, CA with a cat and a tortoise.”
“The Sound of Darkness,” Melody Cooper
A blind musician and a deaf sculptor are haunted by a woman only they can see and hear, who leads them to take on an epic battle against terrifying legacy of racial violence and evil.
“Melody Cooper is a screenwriter, director and producer of Horror and Afrofuturism, and Winner of the 2016 Women in Cinema International Screenplay Competition with her horror feature Monstrous, which also won Third Place at Slamdance. She is directing the supernatural thriller The Sound Of Darkness this summer.”
“Un-Seen,” Lucy Cruell
Some things once seen, cannot be unseen.
“Lucy Cruell is a graduate with honors from Duke University and Harvard Law School. Lucy has also been a published short story author, film critic for multiple publications, and entrepreneur. Her screenplays and pilots have won over three dozen awards and festivals including Shriekfest. She is now a full time writer, director, and starving artist.”
“What Happens Next Will Scare You,” Chris Lamartina
On the verge of losing their jobs, a group of click-bait journalists struggle to compile their scariest viral videos for a Halloween listicle, but when a cursed entry brings malevolent forces into their reality, our social media junkies must figure out they’re sharing harmful content before they become victims of their own monsters. “Chris Lamartina is a Baltimore filmmaker and has been delivering high concepts on low budgets, blending horror and comedy with such films as “Call Girl of Cthulhu” and “Wnuf Halloween Special” since 2007. With a curious knack for finding humor in the weird, Lamartina’s films have been critically acclaimed-playing film festivals across the globe, and garnering coverage by NPR, the New York Times, and MTV.” Related stories'31' Trailer: Rob Zombie Returns With Carnies Who Have Twelve Hours To Survive10 Horror Filmmakers Overdue to Make New FeaturesThe 20 Best Horror Films of the Last 20 Years...

For as much criticism as the horror genre receives for being sexist and misogynistic, it has a long history of strong characters and iconic performances from women, whether it’s Elsa Lanchester in The Bride of Frankenstein, Heather Langenkamp in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Janet Leigh in Psycho, or Sharni Vinson in You’re Next. In the late 1970s and ’80s, actresses who stood out within the genre were dubbed “Scream Queens.” But that title doesn’t do justice to Daria Nicolodi, frequent collaborator of Dario Argento and a titan of Italian horror. That’s because Daria Nicolodi is no Scream Queen. Daria Nicolodi is a goddamn goddess.
A too often unsung hero of genre cinema, Daria Nicolodi helped shape the face of Italian horror both in front of and behind the camera. The story goes that Florence-born Nicolodi was so taken with Argento’s first film, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage,...

Beyond the darkness... beyond the human evolution... is Khan. Mondo has unveiled the artwork for their upcoming vinyl pressing of the original score for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, released in 1982, directed by Nicholas Meyer. This classic sci-fi sequel from the 80s has a wonderful score from James Horner, some of his early work, and this special edition re-release is remastered. It's also "the extended score, featuring cues rarely released for home listening, and it's spread out across two gorgeous LPs." The art for the cover and insert was designed by Matt Taylor, and it's gorgeous, seriously. I almost want to buy this just for the art, it's that good. Images below and info on the vinyl from Birth.Movies.Death. Khaaann!!! That image above is my favorite piece of art from this set. So here’s the problem with writing a list-based article based on the bloodiest pro wrestling matches you can find that have been on the telly: there are, at last count, Seven And A Half Billion Of Them. And every one of them is supposedly bloodier than the last.
Us pro wrestling fans – the proper, hardcore nerdy types who remember the dates and runtimes of individual matches in Japan seventeen years ago – are incredibly precious about blood. It’s one of the signifiers that differentiates a casual fan from a real fan, after all: we know that red means green, and what a crimson mask should really look like. We understand the difference between hardway and a blade job (in fact, we call it ‘gigging’ like we read that they do in the business, just to make sure everyone knows we’re smart to it). Somehow, in a TV landscape where every cable channel, streaming service, gaming platform, and smart watch has to develop at least one grim and gritty drama series, the darkest show on television isn't "The Leftovers" or even "The Walking Dead," but a silly, if stunningly committed, Comedy Central half-hour called "Review." The show, which just wrapped up its amazing second season, follows beige and bespectacled "reviewer of life" Forrest MacNeil (Andy Daly, who also executive produces the show, which is adapted from an Australian comedy) as he is assigned experiences by his viewers — What's it like to join the Mile High Club? What's it like to catfish someone? — that he must then do and rate on a five-star scale. Over the course of the first season, we saw the show tear Forrest's life apart, as he had to divorce his wife, inadvertently got his ex-father-in-law killed, and was committed to...

“I bet the only thing more horrifying than that sound will be the moment it stops.”
Forrest MacNeil is the worst kind of faux-perpetual motion machine. He may run forever, he may in fact be incapable of ceasing to pursue his destructive path, but he needs an incredible amount of fuel to keep going, and his fuel of choice is suffering. ‘Buried Alive, 6 Star Review, Public Speaking’ takes Review‘s arbitrary structure and core of self-deceit and stretches it as far as it can go before it starts to scream. Then, naturally, it keeps going. Other shows might stagnate in the place of extremity to which Review has pushed itself, but week after week Andy Daly and co find a way to plumb new and awful depths in what is essentially a video log of one man’s protracted dissolution into sparking wreckage.

The Performance | As Review life critic Forrest MacNeil, Daly is making one of TV’s biggest jackasses a lovable sad-sack with whom you can almost empathize, thanks in part to the character’s unmatched naiveté.
His work in Thursday’s episode was a thing of beauty and horror, as the willing-to-do-anything reviewer found himself buried alive and getting kicked in the nuts repeatedly — not that life itself wasn’t already kicking Forrest where it hurts.
But the moment that truly earned Daly TVLine’s...

A long, long time ago — two entire years ago! — when I started writing these recaps, I made you a promise. I would not try to explain the plot. I would focus only on the element I believed really mattered, and, not coincidentally, the only facet of this alternate reality I was sure I could consistently track: power. And friends, am I ever glad I swore this sacred oath to you. Because what even is happening? Do we still not know who was the very first A, the one who messed with Ali so much that after being buried alive (once more, with feeling: after being Buried Alive), Ali decided she needed to fake her own kidnapping and live on the lam, with nothing but a curling iron to keep her warm, for years? Is this Charles/Charlotte/Cece reveal supposed to help explain that? I respect the admirable effort here...

Netflix has teamed up with Aziz Ansari for a new comedy series. The streaming video platform has announced an as-of-yet untitled, ten-episode series that will star the Parks & Recreation funnyman in the lead role.
Ansari, who portrayed Tom Haverford for seven seasons on Parks & Rec, will serve as both the co-creator and the star of the new show, which Netflix has given a direct-to-series order. Alan Yang, an executive producer for Parks & Rec, co-created the series alongside Ansari, and a strong supporting cast includes Archer star H. Jon Benjamin, Dear White People producer Lena Waithe, Tim & Eric weirdo Eric Wareheim, and Saturday Night Live alum Noel Wells.
The comedy series will continue Ansari's existing relationship with Netflix. The 32-year-old stand-up comedian has released two specials through the streaming platform. The first, Buried Alive, arrived in 2013, and the second, Live From Madison Square Garden, followed in 2015.

Sometimes, what goes on during a pro wrestling show can be shocking. On occasion, this is down to the sheer talent on display, or an awesome angle taking place. From time to time, a show is noteworthy for the wrong reasons too – bad matches, a terrible promo or just flat out dull storylines. Whatever the case, it’s clear there’s a lot that goes into producing what wrestling fans watch on television week in and week out.
Ego is something heavily prevalent in wrestling. After all, the very macho nature of the industry almost demands that the people working within its confines are larger than life, and that’s been the case down throughout the years for hundreds of performers.
It’s often baffling to wonder why promotions make the decisions they do sometimes, especially when it comes to burying their own talent. This list isn’t...

Taboo Tuesday is an exploration of some of the most outré sides of horror cinema.
In the previous entry, we speculated that one of horror’s most reviled offshoots may be poised to enter the mainstream, perhaps to the detriment of the genre’s role as an irritant to mainstream moral hypocrisy. The Walking Dead may well have paved the way for mass audiences to embrace the cannibal film, but it can’t possibly prepare one for the queasy thrill of necrophilia on film.
Jörg Buttgereit’s Nekromantic, perhaps the best-known and most widely-seen example of this micro-genre (there’s even a sequel), recently received the Blu-ray treatment after years out of print on DVD. It’s an odd choice given the film was originally shot on Super-8 (and benefits from the sheen of grittiness it adds) but also a testament to the film’s enduring power.

If there’s one band anyone with a penchant for guitar-based music needs to keep their eye on it’s Alter Bridge. With a weekend-dominating set at Download (underneath Aerosmith no less) now in the rear-view mirror, they’ve been touring new album Fortress relentlessly – or as relentlessly as you can when your frontman also helps front Slash & The Conspirators.
Such is the life that singer Myles Kennedy, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Philips lead in 2014, although it seems they couldn’t be happier. With the former currently only seeing his hometown for a few weeks a year, Tremonti recording a followup to his bone-powderingly heavy solo album, Marshall keeping busy teaching bass on tour and Flip (hopefully) working on a second Projected album, the band rarely seem to see any downtime.
Over the years they’ve amassed one hell of a fanbase too, becoming...
