A comparatively early entry in the sub-genre of films which use children as villains, compromising adults’ ability to recognise or counter the threat, Devil Times Five is a period curiosity with ropy acting, worse dialogue and some frankly ridiculous characters, yet it’s still somehow fascinating. Also known as The Horrible House On The Hill and People Toys, it’s what one might expect if somebody poured the early 1970s into a blender and then threw the resulting mixture at a screen. With a 50th anniversary screening at the 2024 Fantasia International Film Festival, it’s ready to reach a new audience.

“In Their World, Adults Are Not Allowed… To Live.” So runs the chilling tagline for the 1984 cult classic horror Children of the Corn, based on the short story by horror maestro Stephen King. Set in an agricultural town in Nebraska, the film tells the story of 12-year-old Isaac, a real little charmer who indoctrinates the local children into a religious cult that slaughters anyone over 18! The film, which cost under $1million to make, was a smash hit and spawned a horror franchise. To celebrate the release of a lavish Arrow Limited Edition box set of the trilogy, including the original film in Ultra High Definition, here’s a round-up of some other horror films featuring problematic pint-sizers which you won’t want to turn your back on for a moment…

I can’t get enough of those murderous, irascible brats; The Bad Seed (1956) started it for me, and then those weirdo, virginal birth alien kids from Village of the Damned (1960) sealed the deal – kids can’t be trusted. This brings us back to the ‘70s, and before we get to wee Damien, we’re babysitting Devil Times Five (1974), a thriller that goes from low-key creepy to wtf over the span of 88 minutes.
Originally released as Peopletoys in May, it was re-released in June as The Horrible House on the Hill, and then re-re-released in October of ’76 as Devil Times Five. This indecisiveness is par for the course of this production as original (and credited) director Sean MacGregor (Gentle Savage) was booted from the project for only coughing up 38 minutes of usable footage, and veteran producer David Sheldon (Grizzly) was brought in to overhaul and finish things up. The result is...

Following the massive success of Jaws (1975), producers were chomping at the bit to replicate its grosses. Far too many movies to mention here, but suffice it to say that most were stinkers, and none could put a dent box office – wise in the hull of the Orca. However, one little film somehow managed to not only rake in big bucks in its wake, but paid, ahem, ‘homage’ to the soon to be Universal classic. William Girdler’s Bad Bear Bonanza Grizzly (1976) follows it so closely I’m amazed Jaws doesn’t have a big black snout rammed up its grey finned keister. Regardless of its inspiration, Grizzly is a B movie blast.
Released domestically in May of 1976 by Film Ventures International (and internationally by Columbia Pictures), Grizzly brought in a whopping $39,000,000 Us against a $750,000 budget. An amazing performance at the box office, with no help whatsoever from critics who derided the film as derivative,...

You might want to re-think having kids after seeing the British horror film The Children, directed by Tom Shankland. It’s certainly the best advertisement for contraception ever committed to celluloid, firmly moving past former reigning champion of the terrorizing-tots subgenre Devil Times Five (1975), starring Leif Garrett. In fact, it’s a note-perfect and, dare I say, masterful entry into the genre as a whole and one of the clear standouts at this year’s Fantastic Fest.
The idyllic Norman Rockwell-esque house where a pair of charming young British families go to spend quality time together over the Christmas holidays is slowly revealed to be a ruse of sorts, as we start to see their relationships play out on screen. Once their kids begin exhibiting strange behavior, screaming wildly and grabbing the nearest sharp objects, the character dynamics play out in an unexpected ways as the strangeness suddenly turns to tragedy.
