William Hobbs, an innovative fight director, fencing master and stuntman who choreographed action sequences for such films as The Three Musketeers, The Duellists and Rob Roy during his long career, has died. He was 79.

Hobbs died July 10 at Hillingdon Hospital in London after suffering from dementia, his son, Laurence Hobbs, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Hobbs masterminded John Steed's (Ralph Fiennes) umbrella combat scenes for the 1998 feature adaptation of The Avengers and worked on other features like The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975), Robin and Marian (1976), Flash Gordon (1980), Brazil (1985), ...

The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother...

Earlier this week, we lost one of the world's great sources of laughter, joy, and creative wonder with the passing of Gene Wilder. While Wilder and his endearing benevolence will be sorely missed, his comedic genius will live on through his work, including 1986's Haunted Honeymoon, which will now be released on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber a bit sooner than originally expected.

Blu-ray.com reports that Kino Lorber will release their Haunted Honeymoon Blu-ray on September 6th, bumping it up from its initially scheduled September 27th debut.

Wilder co-wrote, directed, and starred in Haunted Honeymoon alongside his wife, the late, great Gilda Radner. According to Amazon, the special features for the Blu-ray will include trailers, and you can view the cover art and synopsis below.

The comedy world has lost another beloved performer, in a year that has seemed to claim more legends than most years. The iconic Gene Wilder passed away earlier today, at the age of 83, at his home in Stamford, Connecticut. His nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, revealed that the actor died due to complications from Alzheimer's disease.

The actor was born Jerome Silberman on June 11, 1943 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Jeanne (Baer) and William J. Silberman, who worked as a manufacturer of miniature whiskey and beer bottles. He made his professional acting debut in the 1961 off Broadway adaptation of Roots, before making his Broadway debut later that year in The Complaisant Lover. He won the Clement Derwent Award that year as the most promising newcomer. He also starred in the 1963 play Mother Courage and Her Children, alongside Anne Bancroft, who would become Mel Brooks' wife, which would change his life forever.

Numerous actors have occupied the role of Sherlock Holmes over the decades, some more suited to the shoes of author Arthur Conan Doyle's famous consulting detective than others. One of the finest portrayals is that by Ian Richardson. Yet, sadly, his is also one that is often overlooked, not leastways because he played the character just twice (in a pair of 1983 films made for television), but also because his light was to be quickly eclipsed a year later by the arrival on TV screens of Jeremy Brett, whose interpretation of Holmes is considered by many to be the definitive one.

Sy Weintraub – who produced several Tarzan movies throughout the 60s and was executive producer on the popular long-running Ron Ely TV series –teamed up with Otto Plaschkes (whose producer credits include Georgie Girl and The Holcroft Covenant) with the intention of making several Holmes adventures headlining Richardson.

Laffapalooza! week concludes at Trailers from Hell with television writer Alan Spencer introducing "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother," written, directed and starring Gene Wilder.Baker Street was never like this! Wilder followed up his star turn in Young Frankenstein by writing, directing and starring in this well-researched period comedy featuring the great detective's younger, envious brother, who is overmatched (to say the least) by Leo McKern's Moriarty. Lots of hat-tips to Conan Doyle throughout for devout Holmes fans, but it's a sublimely silly movie on its own. Albert Finney has a cameo dissing opera singers.

It's Ho Ho Holmes as a blizzard of festive season franchises takes over our cinemas. But why are they all so retro?

The Christmas Franchise Frenzy gets under way this week, a steady, unceasing carpet-bombardment of the world's multiplexes starting with an epic face-off – at the box-office, at least – between the oddly archaic figure of Sherlock Holmes, and Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt, now only slightly less retro, give or take eight decades, than Holmes himself. One retooled franchise from yesteryear versus another, with the similarly aged Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked nibbling up the crumbs, perhaps hoping in vain to avenge the box-office spanking that Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakwel suffered at the hands of the first Sherlock Holmes movie over Christmas 2009.
