When Hema Malini Supported Esha Deol Slapping Amrita Rao(Photo Credit –Instagram/Facebook)
Stories of nasty catfights between Bollywood actresses are not unheard of. One such incident occurred on the set of the 2006 film Pyare Mohan, wherein the lead actress Esha Deol slapped her co-star Amrita Rao on the set of the film. However, did you know that not only was Esha unapologetic about the same but her mother, the legendary actress-politician Hema Malini also supported her daughter for the same.
In a throwback interaction with host Rajat Sharma in his show Aap Ki Adalat, he had quipped Esha Deol on her admitting to slap her Pyare Mohan co-star Amrita Rao. On this, the Dhoom actress unapologetically said, “Kisi ne agar kuch galat kiya aur hum baaton se unhe samjha nahi paate hain, toh.” However, her mother Hema Malini who also graced the show along with her daughter, jumped to her defense.

Subhash K Jha takes a look at the comic virtuoso Jagedeep’s incredible career in this special spotlight.
Many would like to remember Jagdeep not only as Soorma Bhopali in Sholay (1975) but also as Badriprasad Chaurasia in Priyadarshan’s Muskurahat(1992).
Recalling the experience of directing Jagdeep in Muskurahat, Priyan says, “What I still remember vividly about him is that he would actually listen to my directorial instructions and then give the shot. A lot of actors pretend to listen. Not him. He was on it fully. I wish I had worked more with him. He fitted right into my situational comedies. I guess I was just stuck in my comfort zone.”
A lot of movie buffs believe Jagdeep’s performance in Muskurahat to be on a par with his celebrated Soorma Bhopali in Sholay. Sadly, Muskurahat didn’t work. It was Priyadarshan’s first Hindi film.

When Dharmendra Was Left Angry After Sanjeev Kumar Proposed Hema Malini(Photo Credit –YouTube/Facebook)
The 1975 film Sholay is considered to be one of the most timeless movies of Indian cinema. However, the set of the movie did have its own share of drama. It was not a hidden fact lead actors Dharmendra and Hema Malini were in a relationship during the shooting of the same. But, not many know that actor Sanjeev Kumar who played Thakur in the same, was also smitten by Malini’s beauty and had proposed to her marriage on the sets of the film. According to Bollywood Shaadi, Sanjeev Kumar had earlier asked Hema Malini’s hand for marriage to her parents in the early 70s. However, both the actress and her parents turned down his request, leaving him heartbroken. This also reportedly caused...

Subhash K Jha revisits Ram Gopal Varma’s finest filmmaking with the drama The Attacks Of 26/11 that released in 2013.
Somewhere in Ram Gopal Varma’s The Attacks Of 26/11, the re-telling of the saga of the bloodbath, torrential shower of bullets and bombs that rained down on Mumbai on 26 November 2008, a little child sitting lost amidst a carpet of corpses in the posh hotel lobby of the Taj weeps on the gleaming white marble floor now reduced to a bloodied mess. We then hear another round of gunfire, and then the child’s weeping ceases.
The way the soundtrack is used to denote unimaginable brutality and violence in that sequence reminded me of the massacre sequence in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, where Gabbar Singh sadistically raises a gun, points it at a defiant child (Master Alankar) and then the soundtrack cuts to the sound of a train chugging into the railway platform.

As Indian cinema continues to gain recognition worldwide, it’s still hard to explain the hold it has on those of us who grew up with it.
The intrepid cinephile can always do their research; watch the latest buzzy international feature, check out popular films that are streaming, even judge a book by its cover (a movie by its hit songs). But there’s something at the core of Hindi films especially that is deeply entrenched in culture. Usually I explain it by describing the theater where I watched every new Hindi film from 2005-2009: a suburban Michigan multiplex whose concession counter was flanked by two sacred symbols — a statue of the Hindu god Ganesh, and a framed photo of actor Shah Rukh Khan.
You need to understand that, at least conceptually, to appreciate something like “Superboys of Malegaon,” the true story of film fanatics in the eponymous village...

The following review contains no spoilers for “Pushpa 2: The Rule” apart from what is contained in teasers, trailers, and lyrical song videos. The review is based on the Telugu-language IMAX release, subtitled in English.
The question of “What is the biggest Indian film of all time” has many different potential answers. International gross? “Dangal”. Domestic? “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.” Footfalls? Likely “Sholay” or “Mughal-e-Azam”, though “Baahubali 2” has a claim there too. In a year that has been frankly disappointing for mass cinema overall, cinephiles have watched the promise of the next “1000cr Club” movie bandied about for films that struggled to earn a tenth of that amount, or whose inflated budget made even a record-breaking gross barely break even. Beloved directors known for making mass films with sophisticated twists have let down audiences with trite and outdated content and stories that seem to only exist to set up a sequel.

We all know about Mr India, Chalbaaz, Sadma, Chandni and Lamhe… Whenever Sridevi is mentioned, these iconic films are bound to be referenced. But Sridevi was capable of much more than meets the sigh. She is the only living or non-living actor I know who could shine in the tackiest of films. Kichad mein kamal. Slush mein Sridevi? You got it. She could fling a feast of expressions into the most mundane of movies. Here, we are looking at Sridevi in her less-celebrated film.
1.Kshana Kshanam in Telugu directed by that diehard Sribhakt Ram Gopal Varma. In this rugged road movie, Sri played a chick on the run with Venkatesh while a bunch of goons led by Paresh Rawal chased her down. I have not seen any actress do the damsel-in-distress act so convincingly. When the goons swoop down on her she gives those cute-fright looks of a child being pursued by goblins.

The Nana Patekar-John Abraham film, Taxi No 9211, released 19 years ago and Subhash K Jha looks back at the movie that is a drama, a thriller and a comedy all rolled into one.
Milan Luthria’s Taxi No 9211 is a fearless fable about the feel before the fall. The ‘heroes’—if one may call them that—are two losers from two totally different stratas of life. Nana Patekar is the inebriated, sullen, deceitful taxi driver who has told his wife (Sonali Kulkarni) and son that he’s a government officer.
Broken rule: never lie about your job when you’re on the road all the time.
John Abraham is the spoilt rich heir who spends his time drinking, fornicating, and making out with hedonism.
Broken rule: don’t tempt a nemesis into catching up.
As luck and scriptwriter Rajat Aroraa would have it, the two unlikely ‘heroes’ end...

Jaya Bachchan Once Praised Hema Malini For Her Performance In This Movie (Photo Credit – Koimoi)
Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini ruled Bollywood in the 70s and early 80s. They entertained everyone with their contrasting yet equally powerful screen personas. They even shared the screen in Sholay, a legendary movie in cinema history; however, Hema’s role became more popular for obvious reasons, but Jaya left a mark with her demure performance. She once shared her admiration for Hema after watching her in one of the most popular family dramas. Keep scrolling for more.
For the unversed, Jaya dominated realistic, emotionally rich cinema, portraying strong yet vulnerable women. On The other hand, Hema ruled commercial Bollywood, becoming the face of glamour, dance, and blockbuster entertainment. Both actresses defined the golden era of Bollywood and left a lasting impact that continues today. Jaya also admired Dharmendra and reportedly had a crush on him.

Subhash K Jha Revisits 2006’s slick heist caper, Dhoom 2: Back in Action, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. Plus, in a throwback conversation, Hrithik Roshan revealed thoughts on his cool character in Dhoom 2 and more.
Sanjay Gadhvi’s Dhoom 2 is a sumptuous package of gloss, glamour, glitter, and oomph. It is a slick flick with stunts that flatter Hrithik Roshan and inveigle Aishwarya Rai( back then, not a Bachchan). If you’ve seen the first instalment of Dhoom (2004), you would know Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra carry forward their characters. And that’s not an easy thing to do. Abhishek is saddled with an aura of solemnity while everyone else has a rollicking time.

The iconic Amitabh Bachchan spoke To Subhash K Jha about the drama Vidhu Vinod Choorake Eklavya before its release in 2007. Read on to see what the esteemed actor had to say about working with the director, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, and so much more. This is a must-read!
Vinod Chopra and you seemed to have established a very special rapport in Eklavya?
He’s a kind human being, and very passionate about his work. He has a keen eye for aesthetics. He creates an atmosphere conducive to good work. We waited thirty years to work together. All directors must work towards building a rapport with their actors. Eklavya is an intriguing film. The visuals may suggest a mythological or a period film. But Eklavya is a modern contemporary thriller. It’s set in today’s Rajasthan.
Eklavya is a very short film….
It’s just about two hours long.

In this special feature for Valentine’s Day Subhash K Jha reveals who he thinks are the 10 most romantic on-screen couples of all time.
1. Raj Kapoor-Nargis: They did a number of notable films together, the most celebrated among them being Awara. The sizzling chemistry between them set the screen on fire. While later in the history of Bollywood coupling, real-life jodis got bland and boring, Raj-Nargis continued to enthrall audiences until the bitter end…Their bitter end when they called off their relationship. Nargis’s last shot with Raj Kapoor was in Jagte Raho, where in the song ‘Jaago mohan pyare’, she poured water into the parched Kapoor’s mouth.
2. Dilip Kumar-Madhubala: Their real-life chemistry spilled into Mughal-e-Azam, creating the most amazing chemistry. Though they did other films together, including the very thought-provoking Amar, their togetherness continues to be celebrated through this all-time classic.

Bollywood’s Biggest Casting What-If (Photo Credit – Prime Video/Youtube)
Amitabh Bachchan is a name most synonymous with Indian cinema. Over the past five decades, Big B has defined stardom and versatility again and again. Aptly referred to as the “Shahenshah of Bollywood,” Bachchan’s journey from struggling actor to global icon is nothing short of legendary. His towering performances in films like Sholay (1975) and Deewar (1975) cemented his status as the “angry young man” of Indian cinema. These films not only transformed his career but also redefined the Bollywood narrative with their stories and memorable characters.
Interestingly, these iconic roles, which became the cornerstone of Bachchan’s legacy, almost went to another veteran of Bollywood. Before Amitabh immortalized Vijay in Deewar and Jai in Sholay, these roles were initially offered to Shatrughan Sinha, who was a bigger name in Bollywood at the time than Bachchan. However, Sinha declined these opportunities...

Ram Gopal Varma is one of Bollywood’s most famous directors, best known for movies like Rangeela and Satya. However, he was also behind Rgv Ki Aag, a 2007 remake of perhaps the most iconic Indian film, Sholay. Despite the vision of Varma and a star cast of Mohanlal, Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, and Sushmita Sen, the film was a commercial and critical flop. However, Varma has now revealed that this was not the only movie in which he would incorporate the elements of Sholay.
Speaking to Galatta India, the maverick filmmaker revealed that Sascha Sippy, nephew of Sholay director Ramesh Sippy, once pitched the idea of a sequel centered around Gabbar Singh’s son. Furthermore, Sippy also wanted to cast Jackie Chan in a role for the movie. However, the concept didn’t sit well with Rgv,...

If asked to name a single film that has defined Hindi cinema, he will probably reply with the movie Sholay. Few movies in Indian cinema have achieved the iconic status of Sholay. Released in 1975, the film was directed by Ramesh Sippy and penned by the duo of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. It featured an ensemble cast of Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya Bachchan, and Amjad Khan, who all had career-defining performances in the film.
Over the years, many stories about the making of Sholay have surfaced, taking fans through the effort that went into creating this masterpiece. Javed Akhtar shares why he asked Amitabh Bachchan to sign Zanjeer without conditions. ( Photo Credit – YouTube; Instagram )
Amitabh Bachchan possibly wouldn’t have reached the pinnacle of his Bollywood career had there been no Zanjeer (1973) in his life. The Salim-Javed-written drama was a game-changer for Shahenshah, which initiated a new era of Amitabh Bachchan in the Hindi film industry. However, not many fans wouldn’t know that Bachchan was reluctant to do the movie.
Yes, you heard it right! Amitabh Bachchan wasn’t very willing to do it as his movies were tanking at the box office one after the other. He wasn’t a big deal either then, and Rajesh Khanna was ruling the industry.
However, writers Salim-Javed saw something special in him, and when they were done with Zanjeer’s writing, they wanted Bachchan to do it. However, the movie’s director, Prakash Mehra, wasn’t willing to...

Following a group of small-town, DIY Indian filmmakers, Reema Kagti’s “Superboys of Malegaon” is a moving crowd-pleaser that constantly reaffirms its importance through its central theme. Although the film, which is based on real events, often tries to cover too much ground, it continually circles back to the idea that people must see themselves reflected in art, not just out of want, but out of deep desire stemming from need, in order to live with dignity.
Spanning events from 1997 through the early 2010s, the Bollywood biopic primarily follows photographer and wedding videographer Nasir Sheikh (Adarsh Gourav), a lovelorn man in the tiny city of Malegaon, whose few-hundred-mile distance from Mumbai, India’s financial and cinematic capital, may as well be measured in lightyears. Nasir runs a failing movie theater with his older brother Nihal (Gyanendra Tripathi), where he insists on showing Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin classics rather than the latest Bollywood fare,...

With so many solemn subjects coming out of the fall festivals, it’s nice to find a crowd-pleasing charmer offering the most straightforward of stories: a group of lovable misfits decides to put on a show.
As is required with any overly-familiar template, it’s the specifics that stand out. “Superboys of Malegaon,” which premiered on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, is based on the true adventures of amateur director Nasir Shaikh, the star of Faiza Ahmad Khan’s 2012 documentary “Supermen of Malegaon.” Khan’s doc captured some of the fairy-tale qualities of Shaikh’s story, and now director Reema Kagti expands them further with her uplifting fictionalized biopic.
The film begins in 1997, when Nasir (Adarsh Gourav) is an unfocused young man living in the small Indian city of Malegaon. He works in his family’s dilapidated video store, which he’s also turned into a makeshift movie theater.
