Glenn Close’s career brought her an eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. Vance’s memoir that focuses on an Appalachian family who have fallen on hard times when their once-thriving steel mill town in Ohio is riddled by poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and dead-end jobs.
Close holds the title of the most Oscar losses for an actress, in a tie with the late Peter O’Toole’s losing streak. Olivia Colman's performance as ditzy Queen Anne in “The Favourite” allowed her to be crowned with the Best Actress title over Close’s work in 2018’s “The Wife.”

Although having more of Harrison Fordis never a bad thing, it is unfortunate that William Hurt’s passing prevented him from reprising his role as Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. Hurt is one of the greatest actors of all-time, and while it’s hard to compare his work as Ross to his brilliant performances in The Big Chill or Kiss of the Spider Woman, he certainly added a degree of realism and intensity that the Marvel Cinematic Universe needed. Ross was a standout character in both The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: Civil War because he was an antagonist who had understandable motivations, and felt like he could fit within the real world. Although he has a strong legacy within the MCU, Hurt gave his most terrifying performance ever in David Cronenberg’s bloody adaptation of the DC graphic novelA History of Violence, which scored him anAcademy...

Many movie lovers are caught up in the chaos of Quentin Tarantino's "final" film. The legendary director seems dedicated to only directing 10 movies in his career in order to leave behind a flawless track record. Despite his basically spotless record, he seems scared to flex his filmmaking chops long into old age. It's admirable that he wants to curate his legacy, but he has to realize that his legacy is not up to him to determine. The legacy of any filmmaker is entirely left up to the audience, and the best way to leave behind a footprint is to give the audience as much material as possible. Recent all time greats like Clint Eastwood have accomplished this, self-mythologizing themselves and chronicling their growth through their films,...

Every awards season, movie fans and aspiring pundits across the country become obsessed with the ever-coveted Academy Awards. The longstanding awards show has long been considered the holy grail of the film industry and can often feel like an all-encompassing part of the discourse, particularly around the four acting categories. In the lead-up to Oscar Sunday, many of us debate who will win, and once the ceremony comes and goes, there are still debates over who should have won.
Amidst this hubbub, it's important to remember that the Oscars are but a modicum of what represents the best performances in film. In fact, several of the best actors working today have never been given the honor of an Oscar despite years of treasured performances. The disparity between what Oscar voters love and what history remembers has always been a widening gap, but we can guarantee these 15 omissions from the winner's circle are particularly egregious.

Garth Hudson, the keyboardist, sax player and archivist for Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Band whose farewell show with the group was memorialized in Martin Scorsese’s landmark documentary The Last Waltz, died Tuesday in his sleep at a nursing home in Woodstock, NY. He was 87.
The executor of his estate executor confirmed the news to the Toronto Star.
Born Eric Hudson on August 2, 1937, in Windsor, Ontario, and was trained in classical piano and music theory. He played in local bands before hooking up in the late 1950s with rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins’ The Hawks, which eventually would feature many of his Band mates. The group would back Bob Dylan’s on the notorious mid-’60s “Going Electric” tours and, rechristened The Band, they collaborated on groundbreaking album The Basement Tapes, helping to invent the Americana genre.

At the outset of 1987, Kevin Costner was best known as the cocky gunslinger Jake in Lawrence Kasdan's Western romp "Silverado." This was a make-good role from the director, who'd cut Costner out of "The Big Chill" because his portrayal of the deceased Alex didn't play well with test audiences; basically, the ensemble cast had done such a great job of building up Alex's significance that the then unknown Costner couldn't live up to the legend. And while it was a nice gesture on Kasdan's part, "Silverado" didn't quite catch fire at the box office in the summer of 1985.
So when Costner landed the plum role of Eliot Ness in Brian De Palma's 1987 gangster saga "The Untouchables," Paramount Pictures mounted a publicity offensive to sell the appealing 32-year-old actor as a major movie star who'd at long last arrived. Decked out in fine Giorgio Armani threads and armed with razor-sharp David Mamet dialogue,...

Netflix’s latest action comedy, Back In Action, boasts a stacked cast filled with heavyweight actors, but unfortunately, like numerous such forgettable Ott ventures, their talents are completely wasted by an unimaginative script. The movie focuses on a spy couple who leave their old life to turn a new page and decide to settle for a peaceful family life, only for the situation to spiral out of control and drag them back into the game. Instead of trying something new with this age-old premise, the movie mostly depends on nostalgia pandering through extremely dated characterization, which is seemingly drawn straight out of unfunny sitcoms. The makers perhaps intended the tone to be family friendly, but the way they went about it turned the movie into something that feels more like a caricature than an organic venture. There is a possibility that a sequel entry gets made, given there are several...

Prior to 1985, Kevin Costner was probably best known in Hollywood, to the extent that he was known at all, as the corpse of Alex Marshall in Lawrence Kasdan's Baby Boomer drama "The Big Chill." Alex is the friend whose death occasions the gathering of the University of Michigan alums, and whose presence is felt rather than seen. This was not initially by design. Costner's Alex was supposed to appear in flashback, but was completely cut out of the movie by Kasdan when test audiences reacted poorly to meeting the character after ninety-odd minutes of build-up.
When 1985 rolled around, Costner had two films sitting on the shelf, a Canadian crime drama called "The Gunrunner" and Kevin Reynolds' college friendship comedy "Fandango." The former was lousy and would sit on the shelf until 1989, while the latter was a charming misfire that, because it had been disowned by producer Steven Spielberg, was dumped into U.

In recent years, Kevin Costner has been seen less on the big screens and more on his television series “Yellowstone.” Westerns have been good to Costner at the movies, with his most successful winning him two Oscars as producer and director of “Dances with Wolves” in 1990.
Costner almost had a career that ended before it really started. After very small roles in a number of big films such as Ron Howard’s “Night Shift” and the Jessica Lange vehicle “Frances” Costner then got what could have been a star-making role. However, his role as a suicide victim in flashback scenes for “The Big Chill” was cut by director Lawrence Kasdan. The same director wou would later make it up to Costner by casting him in a showy role in the film “Silverado.”
That western launched him into a terrific run during the 1980s and 1990s, with headlining movies such as “The Untouchables,...

It can take just a generation for a family name to go from Oscar darling to Razzie frontrunner.
Case in point: Jake Kasdan’s Christmas-themed “Red One” landed in theaters on Nov. 15 with a thud louder than Santa’s sleigh hitting a rooftop. The Dwayne Johnson–Chris Evans pairing, which chronicles the bid to rescue Old Saint Nick after he is kidnapped from the North Pole on Christmas Eve, has mustered just $175 million worldwide to date despite a colossal $250 million budget. For Kasdan, the son of four-time Oscar nominee Lawrence Kasdan, the “Red One” reviews were even harsher than the box office, with the film receiving a 30% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kasdan — whose track record outside “Red One” was enviable, with $2.5 billion in box office from the recent “Jumanji” films and others — was far from alone this year. The past 12 months have featured a procession of underperformers and downright embarrassments...

Scarlett Johansson, best known for the critically acclaimed role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is one of the fiercest feminists in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry. Not only has she been a longtime supporter of planned parenthood and reproductive rights, but the actress has also been quite vocal about many other feminist issues out there as well.

That said, when the issues came down to acknowledging the need to speak out on women’s sexual and reproductive rights and pointing out that many can’t actually talk about it without risking their personal safety, Johansson didn’t go quiet. If anything, her shedding light on these very issues made Jeremy Renner’s joke on Black Widow even worse than what the backlash followed.

Scarlett Johansson has left no stone unturned when it comes to impressing her audience. From Black Widow to Lucy, she has a number of iconic characters under her belt, which she brought to life with utmost perfection. However, she’s only human and sometimes, she’s gonna mess up. The 2017 comedy, Rough Night, is a good example of this. Directed by Lucia Aniello, the film tells the story of a harmless bachelorette party gone wrong.

Not only did the film flop at the box office, but it also received negative feedback from fans and critics alike. While the story might remind you of other popular films in Hollywood, Lucia Aniello once revealed that her inspiration was a more serious film that inspired her to create Rough Night. Unfortunately, she aimed a bit too high with this one.

You don't often see the great movies coming. Sure, some classics swagger their way into theaters (like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" did in 2023), but take a look at the vast majority of the movies on your favorites queue and you'll see titles that arrived with very little fanfare. Warner Bros. didn't expect "L.A. Confidential" to take off like it did, and Columbia Pictures was absolutely stunned when "The Shawshank Redemption" rebounded after a disappointing theatrical release to become one of the most beloved motion pictures in the history of the medium.
Then there's Universal and "Field of Dreams." Kevin Costner was a movie star in 1989 on the strength of "The Untouchables," "No Way Out" and "Bull Durham," but two of those three hits were adult-skewing entertainments that traded heavily on his sex appeal. Jeff Goldblum’s film career started in a particularly auspicious manner since his first four films were all highly regarded works of the early 1970s: “Death Wish”, “California Split”, “Nashville” and “Next Stop, Greenwich Village.” He continued to work in film and television for the next four decades and even returned to Broadway a few times, most notably in the highly regarded Martin McDonough play “The Pillowman.”
Along the way Goldblum has picked up a number of award nominations including an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film for “Little Surprises.” He received an Emmy nomination for a guest appearance on “Will and Grace” in 2005. He also was a nominee for Best Actor for two of the most prestigious critics awards groups for his work in “The Fly.” Both the New York Film’s Critics and the National Society of Film Critics named him as one of the top three actors of the year.

Kevin Costner has had a long, fruitful career in Hollywood that spans more than four decades dating back to his early roles in films like "The Big Chill" and "Silverado." That career has included some wildly high highs, including his Best Picture winning Western epic "Dances With Wolves," which is still regarded as one of his best films. "Dances With Wolves" also started Costner's career as a director, kicking off his time behind the camera on a high note. There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

‘The Big Chill’ Meets ‘Freaky Friday’ by Way of ‘Black Mirror’ — Greg Jardin on ‘It’s What’s Inside’
When writer, director, and editor Greg Jardin began working on “It’s What’s Inside,” his expectations were modest. “I’d been trying to make a film for 10 years and was unsuccessful because my other projects were too large,” he told IndieWire. “I wrote ‘It’s What’s Inside‘ as a low-budget, one-location thing really just as a means to make a movie. I was hoping that someone would buy it and it would break even.”
“It’s What’s Inside” did a lot more than break even, selling to Netflix for a reported $17 million after a triumphant screening at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. It’s easy to see why Jardin’s film connected with audiences as well as buyers; its story of old friends (and enemies) who reunite for a wedding and find their lives thrown into chaos by a machine that allows them to switch bodies is a wild and hilarious ride that veers...

Premiering at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, It’s What’s Inside seemed to come a bit out of nowhere. Despite its prime positioning in the Midnight section during the first weekend of the fest, the high-concept thriller features no big stars and no huge special effects. It popped off the screen in a big way, delighting festivalgoers and landing a big sale to Netflix only days later. Written and directed by Greg Jardin, this is a deceptively small film that relies heavily on old-fashioned tropes: an engaging mystery, some nifty editing, and a good score.
Ahead of this Friday’s release on Netflix, I spoke with Jardin about his long road to directorial success, the fast-paced aesthetic built from years of making music videos, working with a completed score on set, and pushing for Giallo-inspired lighting alongside grounded character motivations.

Golden Age, Glory Days and Renaissance are terms that are thrown around on a whim nowadays. These buzzwords and phrases are weaponized by critics and audiences alike with the intention of tearing down the current fixtures. Everyone seems to think the era that they grew up with or were introduced to first is the greatest, but it isnt true. Its impossible to appreciate the best that film has to offer without giving each and every era a fair shake.
Fans will look back at years like 1994 or 1999 with rose-colored glasses, and rightfully so. Its no fault of the average viewer. With the hit parade that has been independent cinema in the past few decades, there were bound to be some classics of old that got forgotten.
Night on Earth Is an Anthology Movie That Has Something for Everyone
Sometimes, its hard to sell an anthology piece, and for good reason.

Jeff Goldblum, 25, has forgotten his mantra. At least, his nameless party guest character – dubbed “Man on the Phone” in the screenplay – has. And it’s the way he delivered that line in 1977’s Annie Hall that made him stand out despite only having a few seconds of screen time. Somehow – just by being himself – Jeff Goldblum turned a throwaway bit into one of the funniest lines in one of the funniest films.
As for Jeff Goldblum himself, he says his mantras are “I am grateful” and “Accept, enjoy, enthuse.” And that, across 50 years on the big screen, is as truthful as it gets when it comes to Jeff Goldblum.
Let’s find out: What Happened to…Jeff Goldblum?

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2024 Toronto Film Festival has gone to The Life of Chuck, first runner-up is Emilia Pérez, and second runner-up is Anora. The Documentary Award goes to The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, and the Midnight Madness winner is The Substance.
Both runners-up Emilia Pérez and Anora were big winners at Cannes in May (the latter taking the Palme d’Or), but Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck was a TIFF world premiere and a surprise winner of this award.
Tom Hiddleston stars in the film based on King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. It is an unusual winner here for this award as it currently is looking for distribution and has no set release date, which means it could be the first People’s Choice winner in recent memory...

When Alfonso Cuarón approached Apple with his idea of turning Renée Knight’s 2015 novel “Disclaimer” into a five-and-a-half-hour psychological thriller, he was very clear about one thing. “I don’t know [how] to do television.”
“For me, it’s a bit too late in the game to start learning,” he says, thinking back to that initial pitch as he prepares to screen “Disclaimer” at the Toronto Film Festival following its acclaimed debut at Venice. Instead, Cuarón says he and stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen opted to “approach it in the way that I do a film.”
And there were precedents that he points to in cinema history for this kind of sprawling, narratively dense work; “Reds,” “1900,” “Fanny and Alexander,” “Once Upon a Time in America,” even “Twin Peaks” served as inspirations for what he was hoping to pull off. Many of those films were set in the past,...

"That is the promise that I made!" Vertigo Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for an amusing romantic comedy film called And Mrs, from director Daniel Reisinger. Set for a UK release this fall after premiering at the 2024 Edinburgh Film Festival coming up in August (though no US release set yet). When a reluctant bride-to-be's fiance drops dead, she insists on marrying him anyway - vowing to overcome public opinion, the law of the land, and her loved one's objections. Apparently marrying someone posthumously is actually allowed in France, but not in the UK. Aisling Bea stars as Gemma, joined by Colin Hanks, Billie Lourd, Susan Wokoma, Harriet Walter, and Elizabeth McGovern. The director explains: "Gemma's quest to marry Nathan is about a good old-fashioned forever love - one that's beyond swiping right or left. And Mrs lets you laugh about love and grief like touchstone films, The Big Chill...

Kevin Costner has been defying the odds for more than 40 years.
After filming numerous flashback scenes for 1983’s The Big Chill, the movie that was poised to be his big break, he learned he had been cut out of the film entirely… but then that film’s director, Lawrence Kasdan, decided to give him another shot, casting him in a plum part in 1985’s Silverado, which made him a star.
Not long after, as a burgeoning A-lister, he was warned to avoid baseball movies because they rarely did business at the box office… but then he decided to make two of them within a year of each other, 1988’s Bull Durham and 1989’s Field of Dreams, and both turned out to be blockbusters.
More recently, after decades in the spotlight, his big screen career was flagging, and he signed up to star on a television series that would air on...

In the 80s and 90s, an interesting cycle of inspirational teacher movies was being made. You know the type – the film where a big star plays a down-and-out teacher who gets posted in some crime-ridden school, and they manage to turn things around? Often, they were based on true stories, like Stand and Deliver, Dangerous Minds, Lean on Me and a few others. Then, there were the more fanciful, tough-guy teacher movies, like Nick Nolte’s Teachers and James Belushi’s underrated The Principal.
But of all these movies, the most badass, by far, is a little movie called The Substitute starring Tom Berenger.
In it, he plays a mercenary who goes undercover as a substitute teacher to avenge a brutal assault on his girlfriend, a crusading teacher played by Heat’s Diane Venora. While initially only planning on staying long enough to find the teens responsible, he finds himself...

Rian Johnson is writing and directing the third “Knives Out” installment, titled “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” He’s also producing with his T-Street partner Ram Bergman, who worked on the first two films. “Wake Up Dead Man” is expected to soon go into production and is slated to release in 2025. Plot details have yet to be revealed, but Johnson and Craig have teased that it is Blanc’s “most dangerous case yet.”

As a filmmaker, actor, and advocate for the medium at large, Kevin Costner is among the most powerful men in Hollywood today. He spent the better part of a decade on prestige television with acclaimed roles in Hatfields & McCoys and Yellowstone, earning a loyal following from a dad core audience. However, Costner's next big adventure is Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, the first part of his Western epic he directed and stars in alongside Sienna Miller, Avatar's Sam Worthington, Michael Rooker, and Danny Huston. Its impressive that hes remained a fixture of the entertainment industry for over four decades, but early on in his career, Costner was cut out of a key role in the Academy Award-nominated drama The Big Chill.

George Lucas kept his name off the erotic thriller Body Heat to support director Lawrence Kasdan's vision, fearing the focus would shift to him. Despite its success, Lucas wanted to protect his family-friendly image by not being associated with the R-rated movie. Body Heat proved that Lawrence Kasdan could stand on his own in Hollywood, without needing George Lucas's name for success.
George Lucas is often seen as the Star Wars guy by many, but the visionary filmmaker has acted as producer on many other movies outside his space opera. However, you will not find his name on one steamy 80s thriller as it was not on brand with his family-friendly label and he did not want to overshadow director Lawrence Kasdan. That movie was 1981s Body Heat.
