Al Pacino spent time with some old friends, attending a 50th anniversary screening of “Dog Day Afternoon” at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre — those friends being the other collaborators he misses from making the classic bank-robbery-gone-wrong drama a half-century ago.
The avuncular Pacino also made a lot of new friends at the Aero, with Tuesday’s capacity crowd reveling not just in his tales of making “Dog Day Afternoon” but assorted takes on other aspects of his career.
“Let’s just say it’s always a 50-year anniversary, you know,” Pacino said with a chuckle. “I mean, I did ‘The Godfather’ — it was 50 years; people celebrated — and I did ‘The Godfather Part II,’ which you got another, but I’m due on this one.”

The Oscar-winning Al Pacino classic Dog Day Afternoon is not only one of the actor's best films in his legendary filmography, but among his most important. In fact, the Library of Congress stated the film was "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2009, leading it to being reserved in the National Film Registry. The acclaimed film is available to rent or purchase digitally on Prime Video, but it seems the streamer takes preserving media a lot less seriously. A major snafu by the platform has been noticed by eagle-eyed subscribers, and Prime Video has been promptly hit with backlash.
As noted by a user on Bluesky, the listing for Dog Day Afternoon on Prime Video included a brief summary of the film's plot that was AI-generated. How could they tell? Well, it's pretty obvious because whoever copied over the plot description forgot to actually read it. Not only does it include an incredibly generic initial logline,...

Poppy Playtime Chapter 4 is bringing a new villain into the story of Playtime Co., and he might be the most terrifying character that players have come across yet. Each chapter has the unnamed protagonist travel deeper into the abandoned Playtime Co. factory where they used to work and slowly uncover more mysteries about what was happening at the factory, why it shut down, and what happened to the missing employees. This Poppy Playtime chapter promises to be the darkest yet, which means that the horrors uncovered will be worse than those already found.
Naturally, the teasers for Chapter 4 are filled with hidden details and what seem like references to previous content, including Project Playtime, a multiplayer co-op spinoff. The most recent trailer for Chapter 4 makes it clear that Doctor Harley Sawyer, also called The Doctor, is going to be making an appearance in the deeper levels of the factory, which...

The Dog Days of summer—vaguely from mid-July through mid-August, depending on who does the counting—may not seem like much of an Oscar crucible. You’d think most Academy voters would be sipping Margaritas in Malibu, or Limoncello Martinis somewhere on the Mediterranean.
But as often as not in the last fifteen years, the Dog Day bracket has produced a Best Picture nominee. And last year, of course, it brought a winner in Oppenheimer, which was released alongside fellow Best Picture nominee Barbie on July 21, and was still going gangbusters in mid-August.
There’s a certain rough charm to the Dog Day nominees. They tend to be audience favorites, movies that connect with the movie-hungry middle, which powers them into the Oscar race, whatever the somewhat fussier film professionals may think.

The DogDay animatronic from Poppy Playtime impresses fans with its hauntingly effective design and lifelike movements. Wicked Makers showcase the lengthy process of creating the DogDay animatronic, earning praise from the community and developers. Despite DogDay's tragic fate in Chapter 3, fans speculate on his possible return in future installments of Poppy Playtime.
Poppy Playtime fans are in for a treat as a team of talented creators manages to bring one of the game's most haunting characters to life with a shockingly effective animatronic. Stockholm Syndrome is a phenomenon we’re all familiar with — at least, in the abstract. In a hostage situation, some ordinary folks will start to sympathize and identify with the people holding them hostage; it’s a survival technique that carries a weird undercurrent of transgression, as if they secretly wanted to be their captors. In the most legendary and spectacular case of Stockholm Syndrome — the Patty Hearst affair, in 1974 — the kidnap victim swung all the way over to the other side. Yet that was far from typical. Patty, the 20-year-old heiress who wedded herself to the “revolutionary” Symbionese Liberation Army, sporting a beret and a born-again moniker (Tania!) and a machine gun, was more like a case of Stockholm Syndrome to the fifth power.
Far more characteristic is the bank robbery and six-day hostage crisis that the syndrome was originally named for. It took place in 1973, and “Stockholm” offers a loose,...

Dog people unite because today is National Dog Day (yes, it's a real holiday). We don't have to tell you that dog truly is man's best friend, and if you have a furry Bff of your own, chances are he's pretty darn spoiled. However, in the spirit of celebrating said holiday, we've rounded up a few gifts that we think you'll both enjoy equally. Keep scrolling to shop! Okay, we'll bite. We love these products, and we hope you do too. E! has affiliate relationships, so we may get a small share of...

I have a leg in each of two worlds, having spent half of my life living in the Chicagoland area and the other half living in the New York metropolitan area, a.k.a. “The Big Apple” so don’t give me any shit about the word “Chicagoland.” New Yorkers have a problem when it comes to comparisons with other cities, particularly the so-called Windy one, named by a New York newspaper editor who previously held the same position in Chicago. And he wasn’t referring to the weather, but to the native approach to political negotiation.
The fastest way for a New Yorker and a Chicagoan to get into an argument is to say the word “pizza.” Second to that: “hot dogs.” But as they say, the proof is in the pudding. Whereas it is well-known that I loathe airlines and airports, the real reason I drive between the...

When we spoke to Kristie Macosko Krieg, one of the producers at Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners, she told us the goal of the reborn company was to make family movies. In her words, "They're four quadrant with something for everybody, whether it's Goonies or Gremlinsor American Tail or Back to the Future...every movie we did in the '80s and '90s. We are going back to that. We want to tell stories that feel Amblin-like." At the time of that conversation, the only movie she mentioned as being on the horizon was called A Dog's Purpose. You’ve heard the saying claiming cats have nine lives, but what about their docile companions? Introducing us to an uplifting story of canine reincarnation, the first trailer for A Dog’s Purpose has scurried online just in time for National Dog Day.
The pic, one lifted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-seller, hails from director Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules). As the trailer above reveals, Josh Gad lends his vocal chords to the central canine, who experiences life through a variety of wildly different vignettes – and breeds – ranging from a cutesy pup to a trained German Shepherd. The story then becomes about Gad’s interaction with each new owner, a pitch that is about as crowd-pleasing as they come.
Imagine the premise of Todd Solondz’s indie pic Wiener-Dog, only spreading its heartfelt story across multiple eras, beginning with the 1940s. Outside of Gad’s multi-faceted role,...

It’s National Dog Day today. And hey, what better way to celebrate man’s best friend than with a trailer for a movie that’ll let you watch the single worst part of the joyful ritual of dog ownership not just once, but repeatedly? That’s the premise of A Dog’s Purpose, the new Dennis Quaid film that tracks the lives, deaths, and reincarnations of a single Josh Gad-voiced pooch as he wanders around the earth in various bodies that will, inevitably, fail far faster than those of the humans who love them.
You can tell from the tone of the trailer that everybody involved—including What’s Eating Gilbert Grape director Lasse Hallström—thinks this is heart-warming, and not incredibly, depressingly grim. And hey, maybe they’re right: more than enough people bought the W. Bruce Cameron novel it’s based on to justify A Dog...

I've never heard of A Dog's Purpose until right now, but since it's apparently National Dog Day, Universal has released the new trailer and poster for the upcoming film. Josh Gad (Frozen) provides the voice of a dog who grows up loving his human companion, but then the dog dies. Sad, right? Not in this movie, because he's reincarnated as another dog, and another one, and another one after that until he eventually comes back around to reuniting with his original owner. If you think that sounds cheesy, wait 'til you get a load of this trailer, which is drenched in so much cheese, Chester Cheetah himself would send it back to the kitchen for being too extreme.
(Oh, and also? There's an actor named "Pooch Hall" who appears in this movie. That's not a joke.)

There are no shortage of amazing, adorable, and impressive dogs in movies, so we obviously had to mention some of our favourites to commemorate the day.
There are far too many movie dogs to include in this list, so...

In the ’50s and ’60s, the Ussr frequently used dogs for orbital space flights in order to determine whether human spaceflight was possible. If you ever wanted to see a cute animated version of their exploits, look no further than “Space Dogs: Adventure to the Moon,” the sequel to the global hit “Space Dogs 3D.” The film follows Pushok (Samuel Witwer), a teenage astronaut determined to find his missing astronaut father. Pushok stows away on a Us rocket ship to the moon, but soon finds he is not alone, as he’s reunited with his mom and encounters a macho monkey and a baby alien. Together, the furry heroes learn the true meaning of teamwork as they join the search for Pushok’s dad. Starring Alicia Silverstone and Ashlee Simpson as Belka and Strelka, the first dogs in space, “Space Dogs: Adventure to the Moon” is a fun,...

Safely rescuing their esteemed colleagues who bravely risk their lives to protect their country's freedoms and liberties is just one cherished and vital achievement people strive to accomplish while they're engaged in hostile international battles.
But that triumph is often just as, if not more, satisfying for those heroes as is their ability to completely defeat their callous enemies.

As Tom once again gallantly leads Sasha, Danny, Wolf and the rest of the officers from the Nathan James into adverse foreign territory in Asia during the tense plotline of The Last Ship Season 3 Episode 6, the U.S.'s Chief of Naval Operations grippingly puts his own life in danger.
The captain is so determined to liberate Mike and the other P.O.W. who are being held hostage by the pirates in Asia that he boldly and admirably leads the fight against Takehaya at the villain's home base.

This week on TNT’s The Last Ship, the hostages were able to signal their location to the Nathan James — but nothing could have prepared Chandler & Co. for what awaited them on Takehaya’s island.

Backing up a bit… After Stewie’s teacher made note of his “attention problems,” Lois took him to Dr. Hartman — the same man who once prescribed Viagra to Droopy Dog as an antidepressant — who didn’t think twice about doping a one-year-old. The result was a zombified Stewie, one less concerned with global conquest than taking naps with his eyes open.

It's National Dog Day today and there's no better way to celebrate than engaging in a friendly debate about who's the best superhero dog in comics. Is it Superman's Krypto? Batman's Ace? Hawkeye's Pizza Dog (Lucky)? The Inhumans' Lockjaw? Or perhaps even Cosmo, of the Guardians of the Galaxy? To help focus our Poll, we're crafting a scenario that 'You're wounded, lethal baddies are closing in but rather than run, you have to stay and fight to protect something precious.' With you, is one 'Super Dog' of your choice. Which one would you chose? Krypto - Sometimes called Super Dog, this pet belongs to Superman and possesses many of the abilities of the Man of Steel, including flight, super speed, super strength and super hearing greater than Superman. Ace, the Bat-hound - Batman's trusty sidekick, Ace, the Bat-Hound may be the smartest of your choices. Just like Batman, Ace...

Note: We call all dogs "puppies," regardless of age. It's much more fun to say "look at the puppy!" when we see them on the street than just "look at the dog." We wanted to clear that up lest you think we are being ageist and only featuring young pooches in this celebration of National Dog Day. Never. Do we really need an intro to this story? Ok, how about this one: Look At All These Photos Of Adorable Dogs! They Will Make Your Heart Sing! Boom. Nailed it. No, but seriously look at all these precious puppies celebrating National Dog Day like a bone-afide (see what we did there?) boss: "I'm smiling because I know how much the world adores...

Is National Hot Dog Day an officially recognized day celebrating a traditional American cuisine? Um, probably not. However, Twitter and Instagram woke up feeling some type of way over the summertime barbecue staple, and we're not one to complain about excuses to binge-eat while documenting our cheat days for social media. Can Hot Dog Day and Ice Cream Day and Pizza Day all be the same day, please? ...And by same day, we mean every day of our lives? The only ones less-than-excited on a themed day like this are the unwilling pets dragged into this for the Instagram likes. Trust us, your dachshund doesn't want to dress as a table meat that you aren't actually going to let it eat. So...

April 9th will mark the four year anniversary of director Sidney Lumet's passing, at age 86. Lumet was the first director I interviewed whose one-sheet posters hung on my wall as a kid. He was an idol, an icon, and an inspiration. I wasn't yet 30 in April 1997, when I met him at The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for our interview at the press junket for "Night Falls On Manhattan," one of his solid, authentic urban dramas that blended crime, politics and personal revelations that became his signature.
Lumet immediately put any butterflies I had at ease. Diminutive, but with the infectious energy of a teenager, his was a disarming presence. He paid me a compliment on my sportcoat, saying that I looked a bit like the young Mickey Rourke (which I still don't see, but what the hell), then went on to regale me for an hour with...

Anyone who saw Guardians of the Galaxy probably laughed a little when they saw the astronaut dog in the Collector’s display room on Knowhere. The totally uneducated may have thought, “An astronaut dog! That’s weird.” Those who know world history but not Marvel history may have thought (and by may have, I mean I totally did), “He has that dog the Russians sent into space! That’s pretty good…” But those among us with more than superficial awareness of Marvel Comics knew that was Cosmo, head of security on Knowhere, and an antagonist of Rocket Raccoon.
