1995’s cyber-thriller The Net starred Sandra Bullock – but it nearly co-starred Bill Gates as the villain. More on the story here.
Go all the way back to 1995, and the cyberthriller The Net envisaged a world where you could get internet access on a beach, where you ordered pizza on a computer, and where some people used the world wide web for nefarious reasons. Pah, bloody movies, making stuff up.
The director of the film was Irwin Winkler, the Oscar-winning producer of movies such as Rocky, Rocky IV, The Right Stuff and Goodfellas. And he’s the latest guest on the Film Stories podcast, as he promotes his new movie, The Alto Knights. There’s a review of that at the bottom of this article.
With The Net though, a tale did the rounds that Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates was in line to play the villain of the film.

In 1983, a film dared to capture the raw courage of American men who defied gravity. A very ambitious project with a talented cast based on true historical events, this film was expected to do wonders after its release. And so it did, but only critically? Commercially, it became one of the 1980s' biggest box office flops, but unexpectedly, it was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four Oscars. Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff, which was based on a best-selling book published in 1979 by journalist and writer Tom Wolfe, chronicles the journey of the Mercury Seven astronauts and the test pilots who preceded them.
The Right Stuff was celebrated by the Academy for its undeniable artistry, but at the same time, the film grossed only $21 million domestically against a $27 million budget. How did this happen? The film is known for having unconventional pacing, but the answer doesn't lie in...

One of the greatest but perhaps unsung names in the history of genre cinema is Veronica Cartwright, a legend of sci-fi and horror going back to The Twilight Zone and The Birds (1963). She really gained attention in the late '70s after the one-two punch of Philip Kaufman's Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), where she played Lambert. Now she's back to the genre we love her in, starring opposite Madelyn Dundon (Getting Grace), Michael Steger in The Ruse. Check out more information below.
"When the in-home caregiver assigned to an elderly patient mysteriously vanishes, Dale (Madelyn Dundon) is quickly sent as the replacement nurse. She rushes to the remote seaside home, only to find herself in the middle of chaos—forced to deal with an unruly patient, mysterious neighbors, and terrifying supernatural occurrences that seem to plague the home. During one of the countless, often boneheaded interviews Sally Ride endured about her pioneering role in the United States space program, she schools a reporter on how to address her. “It’s Dr. Ride or Sally, but not Miss,” she says, flashing a smile that softened the lecture and much of director Cristina Costantini’s absorbing documentary the first American woman to go into space.
Throughout “Sally,” Costantini (“Science Fair”) leans into Ride’s face — the smile, the blue eyes, the moments of pensive regard — by closing in on archival images. Sometimes, she creates a palpable presence by linking footage with audio from interviews Ride gave during her lifetime.
In 1978, Ride was among the first women to enter NASA’s space program. Her groundbreaking compatriots were Judith Resnik, Anna Fisher, Shannon Lucid, Margaret Seddon and Kathryn Sullivan. Fisher and Sullivan appear here with stories that illuminate the era, but also...

Paul Maslansky, a producer behind films such as “Police Academy” and “Return to Oz,” died on Monday of natural causes at a hospital in Los Robles, Calif. He was 91.
Maslansky collaborated frequently with Oscar winner Alan Ladd Jr. Together they worked on “The Russia House,” “Death Line,” “Race With the Devil” and “Damnation Alley.” He also produced “Love Child” in 1982 as well as the 1979 comedy film “Scavenger Hunt” and the 1995 fantasy feature “Fluke,” starring Matthew Modine.
Following the production of “Love Child,” Ladd requested that Maslansky advise on The Ladd Co.’s upcoming movie “The Right Stuff.” After watching the parade scene in the film, Maslansky wrote a short story about a group of police cadets. This would go on to become “Police Academy,” which grossed $82 million in 1984 and led to six film sequels, an animated television show and a live-action series.

Christopher Nolan, the director of modern masterpieces like Inception and Interstellar, calls Dune: Part Two a “remarkable piece of work.” Not only did he say this, but he said it to the director himself, Denis Villeneuve. Nolan joins others who have shown their love for the sequel to Dune. Receiving such a compliment from the man who many say is modern cinema’s most important filmmaker left Villeneuve wearing a broad smile during his conversation with Nolan during a DGA panel in which the Oppenheimer director tries his best to pick the brain of the director of both modern Dune films:

An expert review of the 1983 historical drama The Right Stuff praises the space epic's realism. It's possible that the best "Star Trek" movie of all time could be the one that never existed. Jeff Goldblum, 25, has forgotten his mantra. At least, his nameless party guest character – dubbed “Man on the Phone” in the screenplay – has. And it’s the way he delivered that line in 1977’s Annie Hall that made him stand out despite only having a few seconds of screen time. Somehow – just by being himself – Jeff Goldblum turned a throwaway bit into one of the funniest lines in one of the funniest films.
As for Jeff Goldblum himself, he says his mantras are “I am grateful” and “Accept, enjoy, enthuse.” And that, across 50 years on the big screen, is as truthful as it gets when it comes to Jeff Goldblum.
Let’s find out: What Happened to…Jeff Goldblum?
Jeff Goldblum was born on October 22nd, 1952 just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of a doctor and a radio broadcaster, the sort of brains and art pairing that perfectly describes the...

As much as his costars Lindsay Lohan and Lisa Ann Walter have voiced enthusiasm for a sequel to 1998’s “The Parent Trap,” Dennis Quaid isn’t sure it’s something he’d want to do following the death of Natasha Richardson. When asked if he would work with Lohan again, Quaid told “Entertainment Tonight,” “I would.”
“I’d love it,” Quaid continued, but added, “You know, I don’t know if we could do ‘Parent Trap 2.’ Because who wants to touch that? Natasha’s not here.”
Natasha Richardson, who starred in “The Parent Trap” as Lohan’s mother and Quaid’s ex-wife Elizabeth, and whom the twins played by Lohan look to reunite with their dad, died in 2009 following a ski accident.
Quaid’s comments came as part of a career retrospective with “Entertainment Tonight,” in which Quaid looked back at interviews he’d done with the entertainment program throughout his career,...

From Apollo 13 to Interstellar and Hidden Figures to First Man, among others, Hollywood has succeeded in capturing the history and spirit of NASA many times over. Through technical prowess, harrowing narratives, and three-dimensional characters, these films manage to convey the truly awe-inspiring nature of space travel, along with all the scientific ingenuity and danger that comes with it. However, as great as these movies are, none of them is as sprawling and intimately compelling as The Right Stuff. Based on Tom Wolfe's 1979 book and released in 1983, the Philip Kaufman-directed epic takes audiences behind the scenes of the 16 years America engaged in fierce competition with the Soviet Union over space travel and exploration. Clocking in at a lengthy 193 minutes and featuring a star-studded ensemble cast, The Right Stuff distinguishes itself as the premier cinematic account of NASA thanks to its docudrama approach to storytelling and detailed depiction of...

AMC’s new series “Anne Rice’s The Talamasca” has found its leading man in Nicholas Denton, the network announced Wednesday.
Denton, who can be seen in Starz’ “Dangerous Liaisons” series and drama series “Glitch,” will lead the cast of AMC’s third Anne Rice series. The project centers on a secretive society called the Talamasca, which aims to contain witches, vampires and other creatures scattered around the globe.

For the longest time, Dennis Quaid, whose film career spans nearly 50 years, has considered one film experience as his favorite. In a recent MovieWeb interview, the star of the upcoming Reagan biopic said that his role as astronaut Gordon Cooper in 1983s The Right Stuff always took the No. 1 spot in his heart. Until now.
Quaid plays President Ronald Reagan in his new biopic, which is mostly set in the 1980s. He said playing Reagan made him ponder his experience in 1983s The Right Stuff, which initially gave him a different measure for ranking his movies. The experience I had making [films] is very big for me, because Id watch a movie and I remember what I was doing on that day. [Its] been The Right Stuff for most of my career, because astronauts were big with me when I was a kid. He added:

Wolfgang Petersen's 1985 sci-fi film "Enemy Mine" was beset with production problems and bogged down by massive marketing costs. The film's original director, Richard Loncraine (1995's "Richard III"), reportedly butted heads with producer Stephen Friedman and walked off the set after only a week of shooting. Petersen stepped in after that, moving the production to Germany and starting over. A film that was supposed to boast a modest budget of only $17 million ended up costing over $29 million.
"Enemy Mine" was then released into the very busy 1985 holiday season, competing with "Out of Africa," "The Color Purple," "Legend," "Clue," and "The Jewel of the Nile." Audiences, it seems, weren't in the mood for a modest sci-fi yarn, and stayed away in droves. "Enemy Mine" also opened alongside Terry Gilliam's dystopian nightmare "Brazil" and Richard Attenborough "A Chorus Line," but those films similarly tanked.
Additionally, the reviews for "Enemy Mine" were only middling at best.

Dennis Quaid said that he can relate to the late Ronald Reagan, whom he plays in a new feature biopic, because, “he was really kind of a fading actor towards the end of his career.”
Quaid noted that Reagan, who retired from acting in 1964, initially ran for president of the Screen Actors Guild in 1947, which was “right around the time” his first wife, Jane Wyman, won a Best Actress Oscar for “Johnny Belinda.”
“I think he felt a bit of a failure, to tell you the truth,” said the “Innerspace” actor. “I know he never got to the place that he aspired to be and I could really relate to that,” he said on Thursday’s Megyn Kelly Show podcast.

The Dennis Quaid-led biopic of Ronald Reagan is one of those movies I feel like I’ve been hearing about forever. While it’s been in the planning stages for years, it first really started to pick up steam in 2019 when director Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer) signed on to helm the film, along with the great Dennis Quaid to play the famed 40th President of the United States.
Shot at the height of the pandemic in 2020, the film has spent a good chunk of time in post-production. I’ve been seeing posters of it at CinemaCon since 2021. Yet, the movie is now set for release, and star Dennis Quaid has been open about how pleased he is with the finished product, calling it his favorite movie of his own since The Right Stuff.

Exclusive: We’ll be seeing more of Wyatt in the upcoming season of 9-1-1: Lone Star. Jackson Pace, who has recurred as the character since Season 3, has been promoted to series regular for Season 5.
Pace has appeared in nine episodes of the series through its most recent Season 4 and will appear in all episodes of Season 5, which premieres Monday, September 23 on Fox.
Pace’s promotion follows the exit of Sierra McClain, who, Deadline learned, had quietly left the series following some cast renegotiation drama, and amid rampant speculation that Season 5 will be the show’s final chapter.
Pace’s Wyatt was introduced in Season 3 when he arrived at Austin’s 126 firehouse to meet firefighter Judd Ryder (Jim Parrack) to tell him he was his son (as the result of a relationship years earlier) and although wildly different, he eventually bonded with his new-found father and his family (wife...

Patrick J. Adams' role in Accused could allow him to be the bad guy Mike Ross never was in Suits. Adams plays Pete in Accused season 2, a potentially nefarious character in the crime drama. Accused takes twists and turns, so, Adams' character in the episode could be the guilty party.
After starring as Mike Ross in Suits for more than seven seasons, Patrick J. Adams is set to appear in a different drama TV show, and, hopefully, he will get the chance to play the type of character that Mike never could be. The USA Network series, created by Aaron Korsh, ran for nine seasons before ending in September 2019. Four years later, though, Suits had a resurgence when added to Netflix, resulting in a new spinoff, which Adams won't star in as a series regular. Nevertheless, Adams will continue his legal/crime drama career in Accused season 2 on Fox.

With the passing of Donald Sutherland, I was looking through his catalogue for stuff I hadn’t seen yet as I like to look at the entire catalogue to find some hidden gems. What I was reminded of while looking was his stellar horror output over the years. Fallen, The Puppet Masters, Don’t Look Now, Virus, the Salem’s Lot TV miniseries, and of course Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors are all fun to great but for my money, his turn in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (watch it Here) and really the movie in general, is his best stuff. After buying the wonderful 4K from Kino Lorber and rewatching it, I’m also ready to crown it as the best San Francisco based horror movie too. While it can feel every bit as long as it’s 1 hour and 55-minute runtime, it uses that slow build tension to...

About three years ago, we heard that Lethal Weapon franchise star (and potential Lethal Weapon 5 director) Mel Gibson had signed on to star in a fantasy adventure / family horror film that was going by the title Boys of Summer. That project has since been given a new title, Monster Summer, and it’s set to reach theatres on October 4th. A poster has also been unveiled, and that can be found at the bottom of this article.
Directed by David Henrie (This Is the Year) from a script written by Cornelius Uliano and Bryan Schulz (The Peanuts Movie), Monster Summer follows a local boy, who after his best friend is mysteriously taken, begins to suspect that a supernatural entity may be hunting the children of Martha’s Vineyard.
