1983’s Sleepaway Camp is a cult classic, a slasher film made in the vein of Friday the 13th (but with a camp full of campers), with some clever kills and a controversial twist ending that stands as one of the most shocking in the genre’s history. Like most horror films, it did well enough to warrant a follow-up, 1988’s Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers. Not only is the sequel delightfully unhinged, but it has a surprising connection to none other than the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen, the subject of the 2024 documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. Picking up from where Felissa Rose left off, Bruce’s sister Pamela Springsteen takes over the role of Angela Baker, one of the genre's most prolific killers.

Genre icons Felissa Rose, who starred in the slasher classic Sleepaway Camp, and Lisa Wilcox, who battled Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child, have signed on to star in the slasher movie The Last Sleepover, which is scheduled to start filming next month!
Coming our way from Gregory W. Brock and Austin Rutherford, the filmmaking team behind Hillbilly Bloodbath, Kill Granny Kill, The Art of Killing, and The Town Without Halloween, The Last Sleepover has the following synopsis: A group of former high school friends reuniting on the night of their 20th-year class reunion. Once part of an elite clique called “The Pastels,” they harbored a dark secret—years ago, they tormented a less fortunate girl in a cruel prank that ended in tragedy. After the reunion, they continue the night at an Airbnb for one last sleepover,...

Lisa Wilcox has joined the cast of The Last Sleepover as Bethany Drake, a popular matriarch and pillar of the community.
The actress is best known for going toe-to-toe with Freddy Krueger as Alice Johnson in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child.
“Whether someone loves the horror genre or not, everyone is familiar with the Nightmare franchise,” producer P.J. Starks (10/31) tells Bloody Disgusting. “As a fan of those films, having Lisa join the project is very cool. She is a solid talent, and the gravitas she brings due to her status in the horror community only elevates the excitement of making this movie.”
Sleepaway Camp‘s Felissa Rose also stars in the indie slasher alongside Spooky Madison, Audri Curtsinger, Jason Crowe, Ashe Parker, and Tj Moreschi.

Back at the end of 2023, we heard that the creative team behind the stalker thriller Blind, its still-unreleased sequel Pretty Boy, the slasher That’s a Wrap, and the upcoming horror film Garden of Eden, had wrapped production on Brute 1976, a horror project described as an homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes. We’re waiting to hear when we’re going to have the chance to see that film – but while we wait, it has been announced that filming has wrapped on a follow-up called Brute 1986! With the project heading into post-production, the first batch of images have been revealed, along with the news that Tokio Hotel lead singer Bill Kaulitz makes his film debut in the slasher movie.

Joe Bob Briggs has had a busy month with two big announcements. The legendary Joe Bob, who now hosts The Last Drive-In on Shudder has a pretty big following of “Mutants” who will be very happy to hear his latest news.
Let’s start with his popular Shudder series, which will be premiering its seventh season in March. The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs began as what was intended to be Jb’s swan song – a 24-hour marathon of classic drive-in fare that included such titles as Sleepaway Camp, Basket Case, Pieces and Tourist Trap.
So many people tuned in that Shudder, who knows a good thing when they see it, invited Jb to come back for a series. Then came another season, and another…and now we are standing at the cusp of season seven.

Exclusive: Bill Kaulitz has swapped the concert stage for the big screen by landing his first film role.
The Tokio Hotel frontman, whose band is among Germany’s most successful music acts, has landed a role in Brute 1986, an indie pic inspired by 1980s slasher movies.
In the film, Leather Kobra, a Sunset Strip-style glam metal band films a music video in an abandoned Western town in the middle of nowhere. Ignoring ‘no trespassing’ signs, the rebellious group have no idea they are being watched by the Birdy family, who will meet them with a “level of brutality that is as vicious as it is creative,” according to producers.
Starring alongside Kaulitz are Gigi Gustin (Stiletto), Sarah French (Blind), Pancho Moler (3 From Hell), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Heather Grace Hancock (Wicked City) and Dazelle Yvette (Garden of Eden).

Sleepaway Camp icon Felissa Rose will star in the indie slasher The Last Sleepover.
A group of former friends reunite on the night of their 20-year high school reunion. Once part of an elite clique called The Pastels, they harbor a dark secret — years ago, they tormented a less fortunate girl in a cruel prank that ended in tragedy.
After the reunion, they continue the night at an Airbnb for one last sleepover, but the celebration quickly turns into a nightmare. A masked killer begins hunting them down one by one, seeking revenge for the sins of their past.
Rose will play the adult Pastel, Talia Lopes, with Spooky Madison (Phantom Fun-World) as a younger version of the character. Audri Curtsinger, Jason Crowe, Ashe Parker, and Tj Moreschi round out the ensemble.
Production is set to begin next month in Kentucky with Gregory W. Brock directing from a script he co-wrote with Austin J. Rutherford.

Ari Aster’s modern horror breakthrough, Hereditary, will land on your favorite streaming platform very soon. According to What's on Netflix, the film will be added to Netflix’s library in January, a month that notoriously offers very little in the way of quality horror content.
Starting January 1, you can stream Aster’s original take on the demonic/possession subgenres starring Toni Collette. Back in 2018, Hereditary was the most common topic of the “horror doesn’t win awards” discourse, and Collette’s riveting performance was the shining example to point to. Compared to the notable genre titles that were nominated and/or won in major award ceremonies, Hereditary truly stands beside them.

The recently resurrected Anchor Bay Entertainment will release a trio of new indie horror films on Blu-ray and DVD on December 10: Crust, Cursed in Baja, and Abruptio.
Character actor Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) makes his feature directorial debut on Crust, an offbeat horror-comedy about a sock monster that he co-wrote with Jim Wald.
Whalen stars with Daniel Roebuck (Terrifier 3), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare).
In Crust, “Vegas Winters is a former child star who owns a laundromat. One of the benefits of running the place is finding all the leftover socks from his customers, which Vegas uses in creative ways. After Vegas becomes the victim of bullying, he seeks refuge from the attack in the pile of socks. His pain somehow creates a monster willing to seek vengeance for Vegas.”

The Friday the 13th movies were some of the most notable slasher films ever produced, but upon rewatching them, some harsh realities must be faced. With 12 movies that included a crossover and a remake, theres no shortage of content featuring the hockey mask-wearing deformed killer Jason Voorhees. However, even the franchises most passionate supporters will have to admit the films are of varying quality. From repetitive plotlines to huge narrative inconsistencies, this iconic series had many issues over the years.
As one of the longest-running horror franchises ever, Friday the 13th and the Voorhees family have been giving viewers nightmares since 1980. With the introduction of supernatural elements, more comedic aspects, and even sending Jason to space in a sci-fi story, Friday the 13th has been a vast and varied franchise that always seemed to be suffering from an identity crisis. While there have been plenty of brutal kills through the Friday the 13th series,...

It is not often that the best B-horror movies are complimented for their performances, despite the fact that they are often made or broken by them. An actor unable to commit fully to the project they are a part of can leave an otherwise enjoyable movie unremarkable. It does not even necessarily have to be a typically good performance, just one able to sell the viewer on the atmosphere and tone of a movie.
Horror movies in general struggle to garner enough attention for the hard work their performances require. Year after year, horror actors find themselves passed up for higher acknowledgments because of the genre they excel in. Achieving the right tone and energy in their performances can make a cheap horror into a fantastic cheap horror. It could be Desiree Gould establishing the strange tone of Sleepaway Camp as Aunt Martha, or it could be an always welcome...

Warning! Spoilers for every film listed.
More so than many other genres, horror movies are particularly reliant on their endings to make an impression, with the best of them able to save otherwise mediocre films. Finding a good way to tie off a narrative is especially important for horror movies, which thrive off the gradual buildup of terror that comes to a climax over time. Horror movie endings can be tragic, or, in rare instances, happy, but they're generally better the more shocking they are.
With that in mind, the famous twist endings of M. Night Shyamalan present some great contenders for horror movie endings that save their respective films. In other cases, a heightened sense of focus that comes with a finale can dial up the excitement of a scary movie without necessarily needing a complex narrative surprise. There are many famous villains in the slasher genre, such as Leatherface, Michael Meyers, and Jason Voorhees, that have racked up some impressive kill counts throughout their killer careers, but they've had dozens of movies to achieve this epic carnage. Others, such as Angela Baker from the Sleepaway Camp series, have received much less attention despite the brutality they've brought to their own films. In fact, some of these lesser-known killers have even murdered more hapless victims than their more famous counterparts in a singular cinematic venture.
Thus, a single movie kill count is the only fair way to compare slashing power across the field. In sporting terms, this would be similar to comparing athletes' single-season records versus career achievements. Killers like Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, and Michael Meyers may have already proven their mettle through their respective legacies, but other iconic slashers deserve a chance to see where they...

If the horror genre can do one thing right, it is produce some compelling and well-structured villains. However, it is almost too common for a lot of these villains to be reflective of some controversial tropes and characterizations. Whereas a decent selection of horror (and equally non-horror) villains prior to the 1980s could be argued to feed upon queer stereotypes and allegories, the films of this decade began to be quite egregious in how they characterized some horror villains.

One of the most beloved actors of any generation, Tim Curry, is returning to the big screen for the horror movie Stream, which opens today in select theaters. Curry became a cultural icon in the 1970s thanks to his portrayal of Dr. Frank N. Furter in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and would go on to contribute to peoples fear of clowns by playing Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 1990 television adaptation of the Stephen King novel, It. He hasnt been seen in a feature film since 2010s Burke & Hare, though he has continued to lend his voice to a number of projects since, including Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Nearly 30 years after first appearing onscreen together in the 1996 box office smash hit Twister, actors Sean Whalen and Alan Ruck have reunited for a new horror comedy called Crust.
According to Dread Central, Whalen describes Crust as a take on The Little Shop Of Horrors (the 1960 original) mixed with Willard. A while back, Stranger Things and Ghostbusters: Afterlife actor Finn Wolfhard made his feature directorial debut with a horror comedy called Hell of a Summer, which he directed alongside Billy Bryk, who also appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and gave it a 5/10 review than can be read at This Link – and now, Variety reports that Hell of a Summer has secured a U.S. distribution deal with Neon, which sent Longlegs and Cuckoo out into the world. The company is planning to give Wolfhard and Bryk’s film a theatrical release sometime in 2025.
Months before Hell of a Summer was officially announced, Wolfhard said that he was planning to make his feature directorial debut with “a horror-comedy-slasher movie that takes place at a camp.” Sure enough, that’s what this movie is.
