Neil Young is back on the road, and this time, it’s for his all-outdoor, all-acoustic solo tour. Young’s wife, actress Daryl Hannah, directs documentary “Coastal” about their shared experience touring for 15 shows along the West Coast.
“Splash” and “Blade Runner” actress Hannah previously helmed 2018’s “Paradox” starring Young. The Netflix film was her directorial debut. She later directed documentary “Mountaintop” about Young’s process with Crazy Horse making their first album in seven years, plus Grammy-nominated film “Barn” about Young recording his titular album. Now, Hannah is collaborating once more with Young for “Coastal,” which is billed as being a “cinéma verité, behind-the-scenes look” into Young’s artistry.
The official synopsis reads: “Take an intimate journey with maverick musician Neil Young in this personal, behind-the-scenes doc as he cruises the coast on his recent solo tour. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker and Young’s wife, Daryl Hannah, ‘Coastal’ offers...

It ain’t easy being green, and it ain’t easy spending so much green either.
Disney has axed a series meant for Disney+ called “Tiana” spun off from its 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog,” one that would have featured the return of the original film’s voice actress Anika Noni Rose, IndieWire has confirmed. The series was announced back in 2020, has been in development since, and has gone through several different creative teams, but the production costs to make it work were too great to continue, a source told IndieWire. THR first confirmed the news about the series being shelved.
The loss of “Tiana” is not indicative of just one project; it’s part of a larger change of thinking at Disney around long-form animated content intended for streaming. In addition to “Tiana,” an untitled, unannounced, animated feature film meant for Disney+ is also being shelved.

The story goes that the casting of "Groundhog Day" gave its writer, Danny Rubin, a cause for concern when Bill Murray got picked for the lead role of Phil Connors, the grumpy weatherman who eventually sees the brighter side of life after living the same day over and over again. Admittedly, while we can't imagine anyone else in the role now, maybe he wouldn't have been so worried had Batman got the gig instead.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Keaton revealed that he was approached for the lead role of the beloved comedy before Murray got the call. Unfortunately, he didn't accept the offer because Phil Connors felt like a character he didn't want to play again.
"I didn't get it — I thought, This guy sounds like the kind of wry, sardonic, glib young man I've played — and it ended up being so great," the actor explained.
He was right.

Why Did Tom Hanks Go Pantless In Front Of The Mona Lisa? ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Tom Hanks has been in some unforgettable scenes throughout his career, but nothing quite compares to when he found himself pantless in front of the Mona Lisa. When Ben Affleck took home a best picture Oscar for his film "Argo," he was asked to weigh in backstage on awards season punditry. In a video shared by CNN, Affleck opted out of the way people closely track the race. "I don't get into the Oscarology, and the pontificating," he said, though he acknowledged that many people enjoy following the process. "I hope people are interested in the Oscars, because it helps our industry, and it helps make better films," he added, "but it doesn't help me."
If that's the case, Affleck may not know that he belongs to a relatively exclusive club: Actors who have won Oscars for something other than acting. Many actors who have spent decades on film sets eventually get the urge to try their hand at other aspects of the business, from producing to writing to directing. Ron Howard has made a number of great movies. Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Splash, Night Shift, Parenthood, and The Paper are all masterpieces of their respective genres, and have emerged as time-honored classics that are worth revisiting for anyone interested in seeing why certain films resonate with a generation. He also has a few films so disastrous that they are worthy of extended academic analysis, such as the derided live-action remake of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Hillbilly Elegy, and the dull conspiracy thriller, The Da Vinci Code. Compared to these incredible highs and mind-boggling lows, 2015’s In the Heart of the Sea feels like a complete and utter oddity because of how forgettable it was. It’s a perfectly adequate, otherwise-insignificant historical epic that just so happens to feature excellent performances by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Cillian Murphy, who bring to life the real story of a...

The original 1984 Ghostbusters was almost very, very different thanks to a few almost-castings that didn't happen. The beloved film continues to be iconic for its humorous look at the supernatural, and unique tonal storytelling within that genre. Ghostbusters starred Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton, Ernie Hudson, and more. However, a number of the roles in the beloved cult classic film were almost played by other acclaimed actors.
The 1980s saw a boom in franchise films, including Ghostbusters. Many of these franchises started the careers of some of Hollywood's most beloved stars. Several actors who turned down Ghostbusters went on to star in their own massively successful franchises, most notably Jurassic Park, Beetlejuice, and several others. Without its iconic cast, Ghostbusters would not have become the cult classic it is today.

Almost every time Robert Zemeckis called cut on a scene in Here, Tom Hanks would run back to the playback monitors. The veteran actor had been on dozens of sets through his 40-year career but nothing like this.
On Here, he plays a character whose arc is traced from high school to senior citizen with the help of a generative AI tool from VFX studio Metaphysic. For every shot he was going to be de-aged, there were two monitors. One showed what the cameras were capturing. The other showed him in the scenes at various ages in real time, as if he came straight from shoots on Splash or Saving Private Ryan. After seeing the takes, he would adjust his physicality to walk with a bit more spring in his step or appear stiffer getting up off the couch, depending on his age in the scene.

Bryce Dallas Howard "very badly" wants to work with her legendary filmmaker father Ron Howard. The 43-year-old actress has appeared as an extra for her dad but hasn't worked with the 70-year-old director "professionally as an actor" and she hopes that will change.Speaking recently at Steel City Con in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, she said: "When I was like seven, I was an extra, but I’ve never worked with him professionally as an actor, with dialogue and all of that. "But I want to. I want to very badly. And I would always sort of harass him about it. And now I’m like, 'Let’s talk, dude.'"Bryce has fond memories of being on set with the Oscar-winning director - whose credits include 1984's 'Splash', 1985's 'Cocoon', 2001's 'A Beautiful Mind', 1995's 'Apollo 13', and 2016 documentary 'The Beatles: Eight Days a Week' - growing up.

There’s scene in 1984’s Bachelor Party perfectly sums up just how stupid – and hilarious – the movie is. It involves a donkey overdosing on cocaine. Not because anyone gave the donkey cocaine, mind you. No, it’s the donkey’s choice, as he strolls over to a table full of drugs, chops up some lines with his hoof, and goes to town. He then dies of a massive heart attack. A cautionary tale, to be sure. If you haven’t seen Bachelor Party and that joke strikes you as in particularly bad taste, you probably don’t need to track this movie down because it doesn’t get any classier.
However, for a generation of us, Bachelor Party was a late night sleepover classic. It was like The Hangover of the 1980s, albeit not as big of a hit. It’s the raciest movie Tom Hanks ever made, with him...

Alright kids, put down your TikToks and your Roblox and your [checks notes] Skibidi Toilets. It’s time for a history lesson, because “Moana 2” isn’t just a movie. It’s a throwback to a long-lost historical era when sequels usually sucked. Why we’d want to throw back to that I have no idea, but I guess everything old is new again and Disney is, if nothing else, a nostalgia factory.
There was a time when saying “sequels suck” wasn’t just pessimistic, it was stating a statistical average. There were always noteworthy exceptions but for most of the 20th century, follow-ups to great and/or popular movies were usually less great and less popular. Often they were just shameless excuses to crank a few extra dollars out of the audience, so they fell into obscurity quickly. “Three Men and a Little Lady” did not do justice to “Three Men and a Baby.

A red knit scarf. That’s all Dustin Milligan’s sexy snowman ‘Jack’ is wearing when audiences first meet him in Netflix’s latest Christmas film “Hot Frosty.”
“I was obviously very exposed during all of that, but in a way, doing what I could to just shed all of my own inhibitions and be liberated as Jack would have been in that moment, Milligan tells Variety of stripping down. “It was liberating for me!”
In a fantastical plot that’s just off-the-rails enough to work, “Hot Frosty” follows Lacey Chabert’s Kathy, a widow and paragon of her local community, as she unwittingly brings a snow sculpture (with chiseled abs) to life with the help of that red scarf and a little Christmas magic.

Shaking up holiday traditions in irreverently welcome ways, director Jerry Ciccoritti and writer Russell Hainline’s “Hot Frosty” redesigns the look and feel of the familiar snow-made showcase. Their story, centered on a wishful widow who magically transforms a snowman into a hunky rube, balances its sillier aspects with a touching sense of sincerity. They do away with the cartoonish character’s corncob pipe, coal eyes and rotund body, replacing these features with beefy biceps, chiseled bone structure and sculpted abs. The narrative delivers some refreshing highlights for the benefit of Netflix’s Holiday Cinematic Universe, specifically acknowledging its target audience’s yearning for a sprinkling of cheeky, wanton lust alongside its gentle yet genuine dramatics.
To set the tone, the camera pivots in its opening descent upon the picturesque town of Hope Springs, from a quaint two-story decked out in festive decor to an undecorated neighboring house where Kathy (Lacey Chabert) dwells.

The best Ron Howard movies and TV shows feature a mix of dramas and big-budget action flicks, as well as plenty of Oscar notice for his work. Howard got his start as a child actor, working on the classic sitcom The Andy Griffith Show, where he played Griffith's son Opie. That led to him working with George Lucas on American Graffiti and then becoming a major star thanks to his role as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days.
However, Howard became a star thanks to his work as a top-tier director. He directed his first movie in 1977 while still working as an actor on Happy Days. That film was Grand Theft Auto, and he finally made his full-time move to directing thanks to the success of the 1994 Tom Hanks film Splash. Tom Hanks’ journey to Hollywood stardom is full of memorable moments, but one of his early, defining breakthroughs came thanks to an unexpected encounter on the beloved sitcom Happy Days. In 1982, Hanks guest-starred on the show as Dr. Dwayne Twitchell, a karate expert with a grudge against Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, portrayed by Henry Winkler. In a pivotal scene, Hanks’ character shockingly kicked Fonzie through the stained-glass window of Al’s Drive-in, a moment that Hanks later credited as instrumental in launching his career as a leading man.

In the Happy Days episode titled A Little Case of Revenge, Hanks portrayed Dr. Twitchell, a former schoolmate of Fonzie’s who had harbored resentment since grade school. Seeking revenge, Twitchell confronts Fonzie in full karate attire, and in a memorable twist, kicks the iconic character through a stained-glass window.

If anyone had to be labeled Hollywood’s golden boy in the late 70s, it was John Travolta. From early success on Welcome Back, Kotter to his star turns in Grease, Travolta’s charm, cool-collected persona, and chops in singing and dancing made him sparkle. As much as those roles played to his specific skill sets and advantages, they left him a bit typecast as the smooth-talking, dancing heartthrob – a niche he, or for that matter anyone, couldn’t keep playing forever.
It would be, perhaps, some soul-searching that would lead to a different alley in 1981. Blow Out, a gritty thriller by Brian De Palma had Travolta taking risks. Gone were the musical numbers and dance moves, replaced by an intense role as a sound engineer caught up in a murder. Travolta’s performance was strong – so strong that years later, Quentin Tarantino reached out to him with an offer...

The 1984 cult classic, This Is Spinal Tap, is getting a sequel 40 years after it debuted, and as such, its star, Michael McKean is opening up about the effort it took to make the first movie. McKean, who is currently starring on Netflixs The Diplomat, told People that it was a struggle to make This Is Spinal Tap.
The movie, which also stars Christopher Guest (Best in Show), Harry Shearer (The Simpsons), and Rob Reiner (The Wolf of Wall Street), who also directed, was a mockumentary about a band called Spinal Tap that satirized how rock bands of the time. Most of the dialogue was improvised.

This Is Spinal Tap might just be the funniest mockumentary ever made, but no one said it was going to be easy. In fact, Michael McKean told People, “It was such a struggle to get it done.”
Part of the problem, McKean says, is that the comedy was breaking new ground. “There weren’t a lot of features like it at the time,” he noted. “What we had was 20 hours of film, and we got it down to 85 minutes. It was a long, long chore.”
Before it got to its final running time, there were several iterations as the film was whittled down from its initial 20 hours. A four-hour workprint has leaked online from time to time, revealing what amounts to the original times two and then some. Deciding what to remove must have been painful, especially for comic actors like Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby whose best work ended up on the cutting-room floor.

Director Robert Zemeckis' Here depicts the lives of a wide cast of characters as they appear on a single slice of land across history. Based on Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name, Here follows a story that spans centuries of American history. Despite the compelling concept, critics' reviews of 2024's Here have skewed negative, despite boasting an impressive cast.
With Tom Hanks leading the cast of the 2024 film, Here certainly carries a great deal of star power. However, he's hardly the only recognizable name in the cast. I remember the day -- March 4, 1994 -- when I learned that John Candy, big of heart and large of funny bone, had died from an apparent heart attack at age 43. I was a movie critic and a film writer in the Life section of USA Today, distracted by the Winter Olympics TV coverage of Nancy Kerrigan’s silver medal comeback. But the minute I heard that one of the warmest and funniest actors around had passed away, I poured myself immediately into writing his appreciation.
As someone who grew up in Buffalo, I was lucky to have early access to “Sctv,” the Canadian sketch-comedy counterpart to “Saturday Night Live,” long before the series was picked up by NBC. I was cued into the genius of Candy and his clowning cohorts Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as they inhabited sundry out-sized characters who...

Unlike Superman and Superman II, Superman III didn’t even bother teasing the next installment in the franchise. Really, by the time that movie’s end credits hit, did anyone even want another entry? Hadn’t the Salkinds done enough damage to the Man of Steel? And yet, as we all know, a fourth installment in the Superman series did indeed hit theaters…with a nearly unmatched thud.
If you remember from our previous instalment of What Happened to This Movie?!, Superman III was plagued with all sorts of problems both on and off the screen. So what happened this time around? Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!

Paul Mazursky's 1986 comedy "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" is a sharp indictment of ultra-moneyed yuppie culture, which was running rampant during the Reagan administration. Culturally speaking, the mid 1980s saw a redoubled effort to enrich the already-wealthy and encourage rich people to become obsessed with conspicuous consumption. Many, many films and TV shows about Beverly Hills were released at this time, delving deep into the cockroach nest where America's wealthy classes gathered and cannibalized each other.
Prominent among these was Mazursky's film about a rich family, the Whitemans, that recently became wealthy thanks to a wire hanger manufacturing empire. The family are all empty and unhappy. Matriarch Barbara (Bette Midler) is attempting to fill her emptiness with increasingly strange renditions of New Age spirituality, while patriarch Dave (Richard Dreyfuss) is filling his own emptiness by having an affair with the family's live-in maid, Carmen (Elizabeth Peña). A little while back, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. This summer, the Mouse House released an uncommonly bold MCU movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, which sported an R-rating, and has done blockbuster business. Many are wondering if perhaps this could have the way for Disney to tackle some adult fare, but it wouldn’t be the first time, and maybe now is the time to bring back Touchstone Pictures.

Thanks to his endearing roles as Opie Taylor in The Andy Griffith Show and Richie Cunningham in Happy Days, Ron Howard was well-known to audiences long before he became a director. As the situation comedy disappears from broadcast television, we might be losing more than simply 23 minutes of laughs surrounded by Progressive commercials. Over the past 50 years, the sitcom has been a surefire cannon from which to launch unknown comic actors onto the A-list.
Here are 7 sitcoms that turned anonymous comedians into the biggest stars in the world…
1 Mork & Mindy
Robin Williams was a 1970s club comic with a growing reputation as an improvisational genius. A guest turn on Happy Days — producer Garry Marshall’s kid was into Star Wars so Marshall ordered writers to invent a funny alien — launched a spin-off series that turned Williams into a star practically overnight. Also up for the Happy Days alien cameo? A young Richard Lewis.
2 Bosom Buddies
Want a idiotic premise for a sitcom? How about two guys who decide to pose as women so they can get a permanent room in an affordable women-only hotel.

Legend has it that every turning point in American history was marked by the presence and influence of an elusive and mythical Forrest Gump. Tom Hanks’s 1994 film, directed by the legendary Robert Zemeckis, was powerful enough to move souls and shape ideas even decades after its critically acclaimed release.
Forrest Gump (1994) [Credit: Paramount Pictures]
