The Egyptian theater in Hollywood is continuing its monthly screening series in association with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. And March’s is a doozy.

On March 26, Brad Bird, who took home Lafca’s prize for Best Animation for his first three animated features as a director, will be on hand for a special double feature of “The Iron Giant” and Pixar’s “The Incredibles.” In between the movies, there will be a Q&a moderated by Lafca member and film critic Peter Debruge.

The screening is part of a celebration of Lafca’s 50th anniversary with “each film selected for this series in 2025 representing a unique choice made by the organization at its annual vote.” Often, these are chosen to highlight specific titles that “stand apart from the preordained frontrunners of awards season.”

Peter Jason, a character actor known for his roles in “Deadwood,” “48 Hrs.” and “Prince of Darkness,” along with his many television appearances, died Thursday in his West Hollywood home. He was 80.

Jason’s death was confirmed by a rep from Tribesmen Pictures, with the cause of death being cancer. On X, “Halloween” director John Carpenter shared a tribute to the actor, writing that “he was a dear friend and I’ll miss him terribly.”

Matthew Asner, son of the late Edward Asner, also shared a tribute.

“My dear, dear friend, the brightest light, most generous soul and gregarious of men, the supremely talented and kind Peter Jason has left the set,” Matthew Asner wrote on Facebook. “I am heartbroken. Over the course of a career that stretched back to 1967, Peter Jason racked up more than 270 screen acting credits, turning in performances that inspired legendary filmmaker John Carpenter to name him “one of the great character actors in cinema” – and to cast him in seven different projects: Prince of Darkness, They Live, Body Bags, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, Escape from L.A., and Ghosts of Mars. Sadly, Carpenter has now had to take to social media to break the news to his fans and followers that Jason has passed away at the age of 80. Apple is one of the most successful companies on the planet. They're doing fine, and certainly don't need any help from us. But since it has never released any subscriber numbers for its streaming service, Apple TV+, and since that service's shows frequently rank very low on analyses of what people are watching, it seems like a lot of potential audiences simply are not aware that there's a treasure trove of original TV shows just waiting to be consumed.

Science fiction adaptations, particularly those based on stories by beloved authors, are notoriously hard to get right, but thankfully for fans of Isaac Asimov, the TV series Foundation, loosely based on his series of short stories, nails it. Best known for playing the slasher Russ Thorn in 1982 classic The Slumber Party Massacre, actor Michael Villella has passed away at the age of 84, we’re sad to report this week.

A message posted to the actor’s official Facebook page reads, “It is with a Heavy that Michael Pasquale Villella has left this world, may he rest in peace. May God welcome Michael with open arms and bring him into heaven.” TMZ adds, “he passed away on Saturday afternoon due to multiple organ failure after spending over a month in the hospital.”

In addition to memorably playing the power drill-wielding killer in director Amy Holden Jones’ The Slumber Party Massacre, Michael Villella’s credits also include the movies Love Letters (1983), Gotham (1988), Wild Orchid (1989), and Wild Orchid II: Two Shades of Blue (1991), and the television shows “Amazing Stories” (1987) and “Getting Away With Murder” (2007).

Forty-two years ago, actor Michael Villella (whose last name was sometimes spelled Villela in credits) made his screen acting debut in the classic slasher The Slumber Party Massacre. He went on to earn several more acting credits over the years – and today, we have to share the sad news that Villella has passed away at the age of 84.

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, news of Villella’s passing first emerged on Facebook, on both his own profile and his daughter Chloe’s. According to TMZ, he died due to multiple organ failure after spending over a month in the hospital.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most iconic filmmakers of all time, but he also tried his hand at the small screen with the anthology series Amazing Stories. This show ran from 1985 to 1987, and unlike most other classic anthology shows that you think of, this one doesn't fall into the trappings of TV horror. Instead, Amazing Stories tells new stories every week that feel like mini-movies from the master himself, with touches of fantasy, sci-fi, drama, and comedy here and there. Not only that, it was also a hot commodity for actors to drop in and guest star on. Many of the '80s biggest names have appeared on this show, to varying degrees. It might not be the most well-known series from the 1980s, but it is a fascinating one to look back on and has a lot of gems waiting for new audiences to uncover.

Modern fandom, as we have come to understand it, likely originated in the letters columns of "Amazing Stories," the sci-fi magazine first published in April of 1922. The magazine's publisher, Hugo Gernsback, founded a fan community called the Science Fiction League and encouraged the readers of "Amazing Stories" to write in and, importantly, to correspond with one another. Sci-fi fans gathered around certain works of literature and, later, movies and TV. Boardwalk Empire star Michael Shannon details his chaotic first meeting with the show's executive producer and famed film director, Martin Scorsese. Running on HBO for five seasons and based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Nelson Johnson, Broadwalk Empire is a crime drama series that takes place mainly in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era. The story focused on Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, a powerful political boss loosely based on a real-life figure. Along with Buscemi and Shannon, who played Nelson Van Alden, the Broadwalk Empire cast featured a large group of main and recurring actors such as Charlie Cox and Jeffrey Wright.

Looking back on his career for Vanity Fair, Shannon reflected on meeting the legendary Scorsese for the first time. Shannon mentions how he learned about having a conversation with Scorsese and how he had to deal with terrible traffic on the way to the meetinga.

Chris Ledesma, who served as the beloved music editor of The Simpsons on every one of its first 734 episodes, from the Fox animated series’ premiere in 1989 through a 34th-season installment in November, has died. He was 64.

Ledesma died Dec. 16 in Los Angeles, a spokesperson for the show told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was revealed.

Ledesma had been hired to fill in as a music editor on Fox’s The Tracey Ullman Show, where The Simpsons began as a series of shorts playing in and out of commercials. He then started on the spinoff on Nov. 22, 1989.

“I was skeptical of turning the little 30- and 60-second featurettes on Tracey into a full-fledged, half-hour show,” he wrote on his blog in 2011. “All that went out the window as soon as I saw the first two shows.”

Dylan O’Brien is a bloody mess in the upcoming drama “Ponyboi.”

Based on the 2019 award-winning short film of the same name, “Ponyboi” stars O’Brien, Victoria Pedretti, and Indya Moore, with writer-director River Gallo leading the feature.

The official synopsis reads: Ponyboi is an intersex runaway. He works at a laundromat and hustles as a sex worker. But after a mysterious encounter with a man from his dreams, he learns that perhaps he is worthy of leaving his seedy life in New Jersey behind.

First-look photos show O’Brien covered in blood, with Pedretti sporting a fake pregnant belly. The duo previously worked together on 2020 anthology series “Amazing Stories.”

Gallo co-directed the short alongside Sadé Clacken Joseph, with Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, and Seven Graham executive producing. “Ponyboi” premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.

The feature film is directed by Esteban Arango (“Blast Beat”) with Ed Wu serving as the cinematographer.

Richard Donner's 1985 film "The Goonies" has found itself ensconced deep within the consciousness of a certain generation of film fans. On the one hand, "The Goonies" is a straightforward Spielbergian adventure story (Steven Spielberg served as the film's executive producer) about a bunch of suburban kids, spending their final weekend together before all their homes are foreclosed, following an ancient treasure map to a lost pirate ship full of gold. Notably, Donner captured how chaotic, crass, and rude kids can be. 

"The Goonies" is loaded, by design, with obnoxious kid chatter and light cussing. The titular Goonies, all of them hovering around age 11, like each other but also kind of dislike each other, and are addressed by their clubhouse-style nicknames. The inventor character is called Data (Ke Huy Quan), the jokester is called Mouth (Corey Feldman), and, most rudely, the overweight character is named Chunk (Jeff Cohen).

Apple is nearing a series order for a comedy starring “Saturday Night Live” cast member Cecily Strong.

The series follows a couple on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship when they discover the magical town of Schmigadoon, in which everyone acts as if they’re in a studio musical from the 1940s. They then discover that they can’t leave until they find “true love.”

Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio of the “Despicable Me” franchise created the series, with Paul also set to serve as showrunner and Daurio as consulting producer. Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer will executive producer for Broadway Video. Universal Television will produce, with Strong also serving as producer in addition to starring.

Apple TV Plus is preparing to give a series order to a dramedy starring Rose Byrne, Variety has learned.

Titled “Physical,” the series is set in a 1980s Southern California beach community. It follows a woman (Byrne) struggling in her life as a quietly tortured housewife who finds an unconventional path to power through an unlikely source: the world of aerobics.

The series hails from Annie Weisman, who will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on “Physical.” Alex Cunningham will also executive produce along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios. Tomorrow Studios will produce for Apple.

Byrne has primarily worked in film for the last several years, holding starring roles in projects such as “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” “Instant Family,” “Neighbors” and its sequel, as well as multiple entries in the “X-Men” franchise. She previously appeared on the FX series “Damages,” for which she was nominated for two Golden Globes and two Emmys.

Steven Spielberg ruled the '80s movie landscape, and fans of his work were never more excited than when he announced he was making an anthology TV series infused with the same type of magic as such classics as E.T., Gremlins, Poltergeist, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Not only that, he was bringing all of his filmmaking friends with him. As exciting as the show was, it was also very expensive, and only ran for two seasons. That is, until 2020. Apple TV Plus announced the premiere dates for a number of upcoming series, including Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories.”

“Amazing Stories,” a reimagining of the original anthology series, will debut five episodes on Mar. 6. One of these is “The Rift,” a first look from which can be seen above, that stars Kerry Lynn Bishe, Whitney Coleman, Trisha Mashburn, Austin Stowell, Edward Burns and Juliana Canfield and was directed by Mark Mylod.

“‘Amazing Stories’ is a beloved show that has captured our imaginations, and we couldn’t be more excited to share its next thrilling iteration with a global audience of all ages on Apple TV Plus,” said Matt Cherniss, head of development for Apple TV Plus.

Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are showrunners on the series. In addition to Mylod, episode directors include Chris Long, Michael Dinner, Susanna Fogel and Sylvain White.

Executive produced by Spielberg himself, along with “Once Upon a Time” co-creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, “Amazing Stories” will launch Friday, March 6 on Apple TV+.

Amazing Stories is coming to Apple TV+ on March 6.

A reimagining of Steven Spielberg’s 1980s anthology series, this new version is being developed by Universal TV and Amblin Television.

Apple released a first look photo from the series today at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The image offers a glimpse of an upcoming episode titled “The Rift,” directed by Mark Mylod and starring Kerry Lynn Bishe, Whitney Coleman, Trisha Mashburn, Austin Stowell, Edward Burns and Juliana Canfield.

Talent on additional episodes includes Dylan O’Brien, Victoria Pedretti, Josh Holloway, Sasha Alexander, and Robert Forster in his final role before passing away last October.

The series is executive produced by Spielberg, Eddy Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Chris Long, Don Kurt and David H. Goodman. Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz serve as showrunners.

Apple TV+ is bringing a rebooted version of anthology series Amazing Stories to its stream with Steven Spielberg returning as producer.

Apple TV+ heard you were in the market for some amazing stories and as fate would have it, so are they.

Apple's new streaming service has ordered anthology series Amazing Stories, a revival of the 1985 NBC series of the same name. Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce the series through Amblin Entertainment just like he did with the original version.

The original Amazing Stories was little-watched but greatly admired. It ran on NBC from 1985 through 1987, wracking up 12 Emmy nominations and a few wins in the process. The series told...well, amazing stories, mostly in the sci-fi genre. It featured plenty of talent onscreen and even more in the directors' chair with Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Irvin Kershner, and more all helming episodes.

Have you been longing for more Once Upon a Time ever since the series went off the air?

We know the feeling.

In this reboot and revival-heavy world, no new projects set in the Ouat universe are in the works, but the creators are returning to ABC with a new show set within the Disney fairytale universe.

Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis were at the wheel for all seven seasons of Ouat, and their new show is called Epic.

It is “a romantic anthology series set in the fairytale universe of Disney… taking place in a Disney-like Enchanted Forest.”

Deadline first reported the news, and while this series sounds like it could include some characters from Ouat, that is not part of the plan.

This series will be all about new characters, so there's that. Sometimes, it's best to go with new characters so that fans get to meet lots of new additions.

They have to go baaaaack!

Exclusive: Disney-owned ABC has put in development Epic, a romantic anthology series, from former Once Upon a Time writer Brigette Hales, series creators/executive producers/showrunners Eddy Kitsis & Adam Horowitz, their Kitsis & Horowitz Productions and ABC Signature Studios.

Epic is a romantic anthology series set in the fairytale universe of Disney. Taking place in a Disney-like Enchanted Forest, it will center on a whole new set of new heroes, villains, princes, princesses and all manner of magical beings. While it will pay homage to the classic signposts we’re all familiar with from the stories we grew up with, Epic will endeavor to create a whole new batch of characters as it explores love in all its forms.

Kitsis and Horowitz took a similar approach with Once Upon a Time, which blended classic Disney fairytale creations and new characters. The series was a hit for ABC, which aired for seven seasons.

“Alice” star Philip McKeon has died at the age of 55, according to a representative.

McKeon died on Tuesday after a long battle with an unspecified illness.

“We are all beyond heartbroken and devastated over Phil’s passing,” family spokesperson Jeff Ballard said in a statement. “His wonderful sense of humor, kindness and loyalty will be remembered by all who crossed his path in life.”

McKeon, who was the older brother of “Facts of Life” star Nancy McKeon, was best known for co-starring alongside Linda Lavin in the CBS comedy “Alice,” from 1976 to 1985. He went on to make appearances on shows including “CHiPs,” “Fantasy Island” and “The Love Boat.”...

Exclusive: Austin Stowell is joining the upcoming FX on Hulu drama The Old Man as a series regular. He will play a younger version of Jeff Bridges’ character Dan Chase. The series is set to premiere in the fall of 2020.

The series is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Thomas Perry and centers on the aforementioned Dan Chase, the titular “old man”, who absconded from the CIA decades ago and now lives off the grid. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past. Stowell’s story as the younger Dan Chase will take place thirty years prior to the events of the pilot, as he undertakes a dangerous mission against the backdrop of the Soviet-Afghan war.

Fans were pretty shocked to hear that actor Robert Forster, known for his roles in Jackie Brown, Heroes, The Descendants, Breaking Bad, Twin Peaks, and Last Man Standing, had passed away on the day he appeared in the Netflix film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. He reprised his role from the series and did an incredible job in the role. Robert Forster‘s Breaking Bad and El Camino costars are paying tribute to the late actor.

Forster died in Los Angeles on Friday at the age of 78, after battling brain cancer. His death came the same day that one of his last projects, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, was released on Netflix. In the film, which is a spinoff of the Emmy-winning AMC series, Forster reprised his role as Ed Galbraith.

On Saturday, El Camino star Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad and the new movie, paid tribute to Forster on Twitter.
