As my tastes change and I get a chance to watch more and more movies, largely due to wonderful companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, and Synapse putting out forgotten or lost movies, this also changes what I’m willing to call a Black Sheep. The Howling series is kind of a Black Sheep series in horror. It has 8 films over a 30-year span from 1981 to 2011 and while the first one is typically held in high esteem because of its pedigree, and, well, because its good, there’s a lot to watch and unpack here. You can look at which movie is the black sheep of the series but let’s get even more granular with it. Let’s look at which of the two Howling movies directed by Phillipe Mora deserves the moniker. While the third one has that specific Ozploitation flair to it that admittedly I am an easy mark for,...

Few franchises have gone as far off the rails as the Howling franchise did, and it did so very quickly, going to one of the best werewolf movies ever made with director Joe Dante’s The Howling to director Philippe Mora’s oddball follow-up Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf. Still, Howling II does have it charms and its fans, so Vinegar Syndrome have given the film a 4K release – and they’ve brought it to 4K with a ton of bonus features! Copies are available to order on the Vinegar Syndrome website and go for the price of $37.99.
Directed by Philippe Mora from a screenplay by Robert Sarno and Gary Brandner, Howling II has the following synopsis: Ben is mourning the recent death of his sister, Karen, whom he believes to have been killed in a savage wolf attack. At her funeral, Ben is approached by the mysterious Stefan,...

Joe Dante's 1981 werewolf flick "The Howling" boasts one of the most impressive werewolf transformation scenes in the genre's history. A vicious serial killer named Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) confront's the film's protagonist, Karen (Dee Wallace), an investigative reporter recovering from a previous attack at a woods-bound therapy camp. Lit through the slits in Venetian blinds, Quist's face extends and mutates, his mouth ripping into a terrifying wolf grin, his eyes bulging. Karen witnesses the entire transformation and is, naturally, terrified. Quist was already known for his penchant for murder, but learning that he is a werewolf makes him that much more monstrous. The effects were provided by the amazing Rob Bottin.
"The Howling," while a corker of a monster movie, is also a clever satire of then-modern therapy. A certain kind of "touchy-feely" language had come into vogue in the late '70s and early '80s, and...

This article contains WandaVision spoilers.
WandaVision episode 5 threw viewers, Vision, and even Wanda herself for a loop, when her long-dead twin brother Pietro Maximoff dropped into their now-80s-set Westview pad for a touching reunion, opening up a can of Marvel Cinematic Universe worms that have now spilled just about everywhere.
Pietro, as played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the MCU, originally died in a hail of bullets protecting Hawkeye and an endangered child at the climax of Avengers: Age of Ultron – Marvel’s 2015 blockbuster team-up movie where we first properly met Wanda – and Kevin Feige and director Joss Whedon both promised Pietro’s death was a permanent one that they planned to honor going forward.
Well, Marvel sorta kept that promise during episode 5 of its Scarlet Witch and Vision spinoff series, managing to bring Pietro back from the dead – at least in the sitcom reality of WandaVision – by recasting the...

One of the all-time greats from the horror genre is no longer with us as Hammer Horror legend Barbara Shelley has passed away. The veteran actress, who was still consistently receiving fan mail praising her classic work, was admitted to the hospital in December and subsequently caught Covid-19. Shelley managed to beat the disease, but "underlying issues" led to her passing soon after. She was 88 years old.
"She really was Hammer's number one leading lady and the technicolour queen of Hammer," said Thomas Bowington, Shelley's agent. "On screen she could be quietly evil. She goes from statuesque beauty to just animalistic wildness. She was a regular favourite of Hammer events and autograph shows but also performed on stage with the RSC. She adored Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and loved working with them, that was very dear to her."

“American Horror Story” mastermind Ryan Murphy is feeling pretty generous this week, dropping a biting poster for the upcoming 10th season of “AHS” on Tuesday and now revealing the first-ever promo art for spinoff series “American Horror Stories.”
Murphy shared the image, which you can see below, on Twitter and Instagram late Wednesday. In the twisted poster, we see a woman with a partially hollowed out skull that is filled with a spider and its web. The woman’s hands and upper body appear to be covered in tight black leather as she holds her fingertips up to what’s left of her pale face. A tiny bit of what we can only assume to be blood is painted on her lips and dripping off.
“It’s the AHS spin off,” Murphy added in a follow-up tweet. “We are doing 16 one hour stand alone episodes delving into horror myths, legends and lore…...

The Joe Exotic Zoo is haunted, according to the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures team. The Greater Wynnewood Animal Park has a troubled and notorious history, but that’s only part of the story. Staff at the park say they experienced mysterious and unexplained activity on a routine basis. They believe the phenomena is connected to the park’s past. In Ghost Adventures: Horror at Joe Exotic Zoo, Zak Bagans and his spook-chasing crew go inside the infamous Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park to investigate “sinister accounts of ghostly activity,” according to the synopsis.
Bagans, Aaron Goodwin, Jay Wasley and Billy Tolley will conduct the first-ever paranormal investigation inside the Oklahoma park. “It’s an undertaking like no other for the group, teeming with shocking stories and discoveries, cadaver dogs and undeniable paranormal evidence,” reads the press statement. October is horror movie season, but there’s no reason to watch “Hocus Pocus” for the umpteenth time when there are newer offerings available. This year, several of the major horror film festivals across the U.S. were forced to cancel their physical gatherings, but they’ve joined forces to create a single virtual festival event loaded with promising new work from around the world. Running October 8 – 11, Nightstream represents the collaborative programming efforts of Boston Underground, Brooklyn Horror, Overlook, the North Bend Film Festival, and Popcorn Frights Festival. The supersized curatorial undertaking has yielded an international lineup of genre efforts that include some favorites from earlier the festival season as well as many discoveries.
Launching as New York Film Festival’s virtual edition winds down, Nightstream is another example of ongoing efforts to replicate the festival experience in these stay-at-home times. The program opens Thursday with the world premiere of the Hulu Original production “Run,...

October is here and you know what that means: time for the streaming services to put their spookiest foot forward. Amazon is doing its part for its new releases in October 2020 by rolling out some horror originals and library titles.
This is the month that the much-hyped Blumhouse horror anthology series Welcome to the Blumhouse arrives. “Episodes” of that, Black Box and The Lie launch on Oct. 6 and Evil Eye and Nocturne arrive on Oct. 13. Another horror-adjacent release of note is Truth Seekers, a comedy-horror series from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg.
That’s about it for notable originals. Thankfully October 1 brings the usual burst of fascinating library movie titles. A Knights Tale, Spaceballs, and The Departed all debut on the first of the month. Terminator: Dark Fate arrives on Oct. 9. The superb final season of Mr. Robot will be available on Oct. 6. As our esteemed Film Editor David Crow has said elsewhere, movies are back — but in a sense they’ve never really gone away. New original films have been popping up via streaming and video-on-demand all throughout the reign of the coronavirus, and they continue to do so even as theaters begin to reopen and the studios slowly start to fill them with new releases as well.
The operative word here is “slow”: we’re not seeing a deluge of new films anywhere — the big or small screen — but there is a steady flow of them nonetheless, and as is often the case, horror leads the way. Below is a round-up of fresh horror releases coming your way (or there already) in the US and UK, available either at your local multiplex (and we urge you to keep the risks of going to the theater in mind) or right in your living room.

From Saw II–IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera to the upcoming Spiral: From the Book of Saw and the immersive Tension Experience, Darren Lynn Bousman has been bringing imaginative nightmares to life for years alongside other L.A. filmmakers who come from all walks of life. In his new documentary The Horror Crowd, prolific actor Ruben Pla explores this diverse community of horror creators through in-depth interviews with Bousman, Lin Shaye, Brea Grant, Jeffrey Reddick, and many more filmmakers.
With The Horror Crowd making its world premiere at the FrightFest Digital Edition on August 29th on the Arrow Video Screen, we caught up virtually with Bousman to discuss his involvement in the documentary, and he also chatted about finding creative ways to do immersive experiences in the Covid era, his upcoming film Death of Me, and what it was like returning to the Saw franchise to direct Spiral: From the Book of Saw,...

This year has seen every film festival struggling to find ways to present new films to their audience safely, without risk of infection, in the midst of a global pandemic. And after long and serious discussion, Grimmfest will be going ahead in a new format for 2020 – offering a roster of feature film premieres and shorts programmes across a new online platform.
Grimmfest’s live event at the Odeon Great Northern, Manchester, will be postponed until spring 2021. But fear not, a new online alternative “virtual festival” is set to run from 7 – 11 October 2020 and will present over 19 features, two short film showcases, and an exclusive Q&a with the Master of Horror himself, Mick Garris, who will also be receiving a Lifetime achievement award.

“The police don’t believe in monsters,” we learned in Ed Woods’ 1955 B-movie horror favorite Bride of the Monster. But Full Moon Features does, and they know where to find them. On Friday, July 31, the channel and app dropped seven cult classics to their new 20-film series Haunted Hollywood. Every Friday for 13 weeks, they will add a new scary flick. Some of these films are frightening in their content, others for the stories behind the film. For some of these movies, the most horrifying thing is they ever got made in the first place.
Real life and Hollywood history blend in macabre ways, and no one blends these stories better than David Del Valle. The film historian and agent to the stars hosts Haunted Hollywood, opening each showing with a personal story. Del Valle hosted a series of television interviews entitled “Sinister Image,” speaking with moviemakers as varied as Cameron Mitchell to Russ Meyer.

Nearly five years after his death, horror fans across the world are remembering iconic movie director Wes Craven on what would have been his 81st birthday. Particularly loved by horror fans for helming popular genre movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, Craven passed away in 2015 after a battle with brain cancer at the age of 76. As such a beloved filmmaker widely considered to be among the horror genre's greatest talents of all time, many fans still feel the sting of his passing and have been paying tribute with posts on social media.
From the very start of his career, Craven had been making fantastic horror movies that would go on to become some of the genre's most popular offerings. He wrote and directed the gritty revenge movie The Last House on the Left in 1972, following this up with 1977's The Hills Have Eyes and its 1984 sequel. Craven...

Earlier this month, the stellar documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street arrived on Shudder, and as someone obsessed with documentaries (both within the realm of genre entertainment and beyond as well), I thought that I would celebrate this occasion with a rundown of where you can currently stream some of the very best horror, sci-fi, and genre-adjacent related documentaries on many of the popular digital platforms out there.
So, pop some popcorn, turn down the lights, and get ready to get schooled on all sorts of genre goodness with this assortment of horror and sci-fi docs available on a variety of streaming platforms.

Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street (Streaming on Shudder)
Some have called it the 'gayest horror movie ever made!' But for Mark Patton, the star of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, it was anything but a dream come true.

Horror is a genre that's definitely intended for a specific audience, but that doesn't mean everyone needs to left out. While it's true that there are dozens and dozens of movies that rely heavily on jump scares, shock, and gallons upon gallons of fake blood, there are those that are a little more user-friendly than the average horror flick.
