To paraphrase an old beer commercial. “Salvador Dali doesn't make Kung Fu movies. But if he did…” “The Miracle Fighters” might possibly be the most surreal martial arts movie that you will ever witness. The beauty of it though is that it is absolutely intentional, unlike a lot of the oddness we can see in kung ku cinema. Strap yourself in as Eureka Entertainment bring a restored version to Blu Ray. This is going to be a journey unlike any you will have witnessed before.

Jackie Chan is a legendary comedic martial arts movie star known for his technical skills and direction, but while he's the most famous among them, he's not the only one. Martial arts stars like Sammo Hung and Chow Yun-fat have similarly extended their influence behind the scenes as action directors. Others, like Cynthia Rothrock and Michelle Yeoh, bring humor to their roles through physical comedy and impeccable timing.
In the dynamic realm of martial arts cinema, a select few actors have proven their technical skills and brilliant physical comedic timing. Jackie Chan is the most legendary of these comedic martial arts movie stars, often serving as director and visionary of his films as well. As an actor, he mixes exaggerated characterizations with genuine toughness. Yet, many other martial arts stars are capable of delivering as many laughs as thrills.

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.
Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. If there is one rule that consistently defines Hong Kong cinema it is that if one movie is a success, then there shall be a constant stream of rip-offs until the next big smash. So if you’ve seen one Hong Kong Vampire movie then chances are you’ve seen quite a few. Just occasionally though we get a pleasant surprise and someone decided to do something a little different with the formula. “Vampire’s Breakfast” is one such example. Whilst the title conjures up images of a Saturday morning cooking show for the undead, it is in fact a feature that deserves to be awoken from its coffin and rediscovered.
There is a vampire loose in Hong Kong. Reporter Piao (Kent Cheng) unwittingly becomes involved as several bodies are discovered and the witness that he finds (Kwan Chiu-chung), proves to be unreliable. Both now forced to prove themselves,...

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of Sammo Hung’s groundbreaking Hong Kong hit wherein comedy, horror and martial arts elements are brought together in a wholly successful way. This show has it all: kung fu action, duelling mystics, hopping vampires, hungry zombies, haunted mirrors and a sympathetic everyman whose danger-fraught narrative trajectory is littered with moments that are genuinely funny. Excellent production values complete this near perfect picture.

When A Chinese Ghost Story premiered in 1987, it was already part of a unique category – the fusion of horror, comedy, and Kung Fu. Asian horror films are known as jiangshi, which is the name of a specific spooky hopping ghost found in Chinese folklore that proliferates these films.
Part zombie, part vampire, jiangshi are corpses that are usually reanimated by demons or Daoist sorcerers. They hop along mindlessly with their arms outstretched like sleepwalkers, and feed on the life essence – or qi – of the living. Often a jiangshi is blind but can smell breath. This makes for great comic hijinks as hapless characters struggle to hold their breath while gruesome jiangshi shove their rotting noses close to their mouths trying to pick up the scent.
Comedy is a common horror film device. It releases tension and leaves the audience unguarded for the next jump scare. The addition of Kung Fu...

The gambling movie is something that seems to have become a genre of its own over the years in Hong Kong. From the Hui Brothers’ “Games Gamblers Play” to the numerous spin offs of Jing Wang’s 1989 classix “God of Gamblers”, nothing better represents Hk society’s aspiration for wealth. Indeed, “The Gambling Ghost” hedges its own bets by featuring three Sammo Hungs!
Fatty (Sammo Hung) is a failing gambler working as a valet, whilst continuing to disappoint his more straight laced father (Sammo Hung). An encounter with a car thief (Nina Li Chi) finds Fatty losing his job and one of his friends (of whom is captured by gangsters). His grandfather (Sammo Hung!) returns as a ghost to help, promising to make him wealthy if he takes revenge for his murder. Hijinks and flying fists ensue as the wayward Fatty finds himself unable to avoid a final confrontation.

Right, let me first prefix this by saying that I am and always will be a big fan of Sammo Hung.

1985 was the year of Back To The Future, Rocky IV and Rambo II. But what about these 20 movies, that also deserve a fair share of love?
Thirty years ago, Marty McFly was riding high with the smash hit Back To The Future, while Sylvester Stallone enjoyed his most successful year yet with the one-two punch of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. It was an era of family sci-fi and teen comedies and bullet-spraying action, where The Breakfast Club and Teen Wolf rubbed shoulders with Death Wish 3 and Commando. Then there were low-key dramas like Out Of Africa and The Color Purple, which were both awards magnets at the Oscars.
Away from all those big hits, 1985 saw the release of a wealth of less successful movies, some of which found a second life on the then-huge home video circuit. Here's our pick of 20 underappreciated films from the year of Rambo,...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...

If you are a fan of the old Mr.Vampire movies and the recent Rigor Mortis, then Sifu Vs Vampire is going to be the movie for you. Yuen Biao is back playing the role of Charlie Jiang, a master in dealing with corpses and vampires who has to exhume the body of Tv station owner Kelvin Chow (Kelvin Kwan).
I love the Mr.Vampire movies and always said, no one does that priest role better than Lam Ching Ying. But i am very happy to see Kung Fu legend Yuen Biao in that role, also Yuen has done horror/martial art movies before like Mr.Vampire 2, Those Merry Souls and played a vampire in Encounters Of The Spooky Kind, pictured below.

Anita Mui 1963-2003
Anita Mui had a fantastic screen presence, an actress and a musician, she also did lots of work for charity. In the 80′s she became a household name within the music world and was dubbed the “Madonna of Asia”. She had a series of shows entitled the “Anita Classic Moment Live Concert” that consisted of eight shows at the Hong Kong Coliseum from 6 to 11 November and 14 to 15 November 2003, which were to be her last concerts before her death.
Anita made some great movies and was always surrounded by a great cast. Some movies you should check out are Behind the Yellow Line, Rouge, The Heroic Trio, Drunken Master 2, Miracles, Saviour of the Soul, Moon Warriors and many more.
Mui was originally cast in Zhang Yimou’s House of Flying Daggers (2004), but she resigned only two weeks before her death. Zhang had reserved her scenes to be shot...

Sammo Hung is a legend in the Kung Fu movie world and rightly so, starring and directing some of the greatest Kung Fu movies in the genre. Sammo as been acting since a some child during his days at the Peking Opera school, we later seen him taking on Bruce Lee at the beginning of the classic Enter The Dragon.
So i wanted to do a run down of my favorite Sammo Hung classics, kung fu style.
Warriors Two (1978)
Starring:Casanova Wong, Leung Kar Yan, Fung Hak On, Lau Kar Wing
Verdict:One of the best wing chun movies ever made, Sammo really was on top of his game in terms of choreography. Casanova Wong is fantastic as usual with his kicking ability, Fung Hak On plays a fierce villain and Leung Kar Yan is in fine fighting form.
Casanova Wong performs a brilliant jumping spinning back kick over a table,...

Following are some supplemental sections featuring notable director & actor teams that did not meet the criteria for the main body of the article. Some will argue that a number of these should have been included in the primary section but keep in mind that film writing on any level, from the casual to the academic, is a game of knowledge and perception filtered through personal taste.

Lam Ching Ying is my favorite star in any Horror movie, weather it be taking on hopping vampires or just plain old spirits, no one does it better than lam.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we dont normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
I hope you enjoy my top 10 list and please feel free to write your own favorites in the comments box at the bottom of the page.

I thought it was about time i did a post on the great vampire buster of all time, yes you got it, lam Ching Ying. This will be listing all the movies and tv series where Lam Ching Ying either stars in or takes on the hopping vampires and evil spirits.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
Other great movies which he starred in (But not in a vampire movie) were the likes of The Prodigal Son, School On Fire, Eastern Condors, The Magnificent Butcher and Painted Faces.
I have been a big fan of these movies since i first watched Mr.

With Halloween fast approaching it’s that time of year for horror movie marketers to have a field day, and it looks like Hong Kong’s no different with (the clue is in the title) Hong Hong Ghost Stories. Directors Jing Wong and Patrick Kong join forces together for the first time to bring us a ghost horror, Hong Kong style. The 2-part horror stories starts with the spooky and unexplained incidents in a school and the second story is about the ghostly encounter of a group of friend on vacation. Maybe it’s just me but the whole thing seems to be giving a little nod of recognition to the campy Hong Kong horror style of the 80s; that brought us the likes of ‘Mr. Vampire’ and ‘Encounters of the Spooky Kind.’ No bad thing really, as both of those were absolute solid gold classics. Though this sickly green globe we call Earth has been lovingly graced with an unhealthy abundance of bizarre, over-the-top kung fu movies, few of them actually come close to matching the undeniably goofy charm of “Hard Way to Die” director I-Jung Hua’s comedic martial arts romp “Kung Fu Zombie”. This insanely kinetic motion picture — an obvious rip-off of professional badass Sammo Hung’s enjoyable farce “Encounters of the Spooky Kind” — is internally optimized with the same unique brand of reckless abandon found swimming casually throughout cult favorite Sam Raimi’s earlier, more inspired work. Lifting countless ideas from a number of obvious sources, Hua delivers his wacky, off-the-wall material with his gore-soaked tongue pressed firmly into his partially-digested cheek. Additionally, the film’s numerous high-energy fight scenes help prevent the story’s sillier moments from ruling the roost. Highly recommended And while “Kung Fu Zombie” never triumphantly soars beyond the zany brilliance of,...

A unique mix of horror, martial arts action and comedy, Encounters Of The Spooky Kind is a classic of Hong Kong cinema. Ryan takes a look back…
What elements do you need to create a genuinely entertaining film? Action? Comedy? Horror? Great characters? An unnerving air of unpredictability? The 1980 Hong Kong movie, Encounters Of The Spooky Kind, has all those elements and more. It's a strange, supernatural brew of mild gore, frequently hilarious comedy, and some of the most extraordinary kung fu sequences ever committed to film.
Following Jacob Walker's excellent article on the world of supernatural kung fu movies earlier this month (linked at the bottom), I was inspired to return to Encounters Of The Spooky Kind (also known as Gui da Gui, which means Ghost Fights Ghost), the film that popularised an entire subgenre of Jiang Shi (or stiff corpse) Hong Kong action cinema. Even after a fourth or fifth viewing,...

Can M Night Shyamalan recapture his finest form? We take a look ahead to his upcoming summer blockbuster, The Last Airbender...
What Is It?
A live action adaptation of the Us animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Avatar prefix was understandably dropped to avoid confusion with a certain mega-budget blockbuster directed by James Cameron. Influenced by Japanese anime and folklore, The Last Airbender is set in a fantasy universe governed by the mythical elements Fire, Air, and Water, and introduces central hero Aang, the titular Airbender who must use his elemental powers to save the planet from the dastardly Fire nation.
Part one of a planned trilogy, The Last Airbender is a big-budget (around $100 million, we're told) family blockbuster, with its release date coinciding precisely with Disney's similarly effects-laden fantasy The Sorcerer's Apprentice. It's also, arguably, one of the toughest sells of the summer, lacking a major recognisable franchise...
