The Mandalorian Civil War in Star Wars Legends led to the rise of legendary fighters like Jango Fett and the Death Watch. Jango Fett and the Death Watch's conflicts shaped Mandalorian culture, with the Supercommando Codex guiding warriors. The modern Star Wars canon hints at Jango Fett's involvement in the Mandalorian Civil Wars, but any other details remain unclear.
A major event in the history of the Star Wars franchises Mandalorians is the Mandalorian Civil War, a devastating conflict that saw the rise of a legendary Mandalor and the establishment of a vicious terrorist group. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is one of the most beloved entries to the saga. It introduced beloved characters like Ahsoka Tano and provided more depth to existing figures like Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. It fills in the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith perfectly, especially since the movies glazed over the majority of the conflict in favor of focusing on Anakin's character development.
However, despite being ostensibly geared toward younger audiences, The Clone Wars handles some of the darkest themes in the series. The clones face constant dehumanization from those they believed they could trust, the Jedi Order makes incredibly ill-informed decisions and galactic politics grow more complicated than anyone ever would have believed they could. Let's take a look at the ten darkest story arcs in the show.

The Mandalorian & Grogu movie must address Satine Kryze's legacy. Satine's importance in Obi-Wan's life and in Mandalorian history is often overlooked in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian & Grogu movie has the opportunity to honor Satine's memory and explore Bo-Katan's complex feelings about her sister.
Star Wars' upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie must address one glaring error from The Mandalorian season 3 and, sadly, from a few other Star Wars movies and TV shows as well. The Mandalorian is undoubtedly one of Star Wars' best TV shows. Not only did it introduce beloved characters Grogu and Din Djarin, but it also kicked off a number of Star Wars shows and movies that focus on the New Republic timeline, from The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka to The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Bo-Katan's character growth is vital to appreciate, as her journey from terrorist to leader is hard-earned. The complexity of Bo-Katan's arc in Star Wars shows her self-reflection and redemption from past mistakes. Katee Sackhoff's portrayal of Bo-Katan brings grace to a character who has evolved into a strong leader.
Bo-Katan Kryze actress Katee Sackhoff gave her iconic Star Wars character the perfect defense to her Star Wars: The Clone Wars arc and the criticism that comes with it. Bo-Katan has become one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars movies and TV shows, but it wasn't an easy road getting there. When she was introduced in The Clone Wars, she seemed like yet another callous member of the terrorist group Death Watch, and while her image has been radically transformed in one of Star Wars' best TV shows, The Mandalorian, that original story has been difficult to shake.

Next, she's shipped back to Coruscant aboard a Republic prison ship operated by droids. And that's just the start of her bad time. Bo-Katan Kryze's Star Wars timeline includes joining Death Watch, leading the Nite Owls, and rejecting Maul's rule. Bo-Katan becomes Mandalore's regent, suffers the Night of a Thousand Tears, and finally earns the Darksaber in The Mandalorian season 3. With the help of Din Djarin, Bo-Katan leads the Liberation of Mandalore, defeats Moff Gideon, and becomes the new Mand'alor.

The Mandalorian has delved into Mandalorian culture, but a crucial story remains untold, highlighting the discontinuity between eras. The Mandalorian Death Watch mysteriously schismed, possibly a result of Pre Vizsla's death. This story needs to be told, providing important context for Din Djarin and his faction, the Children of the Watch.
The Mandalorian has fleshed out the culture and history of the planet Mandalore, but one key story has yet to be told. George Lucas effectively reinvented the Mandalorians in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and they've since become essential to Star Wars lore. Din Djarin served as a window into their culture in The Mandalorian, and his actions led to their reclaiming their lost homeworld from the Empire. Mandalorian culture and heritage is gradually becoming clearer.
The problem, though, is that there's a sharp discontinuity between the Mandalorians seen in The Clone Wars and in The Mandalorian. In The Clone Wars,...

Death Watch, a terrorist faction of Mandalorians, held onto old warrior traditions and briefly allied with the Separatists. The New Mandalorians were pacifists and allies of the Republic but not full members. The Mandalorians ultimately didn't choose a side and suffered when power changed hands to the Galactic Empire.
The Mandalorians are easily one of the most recognizable factions within the galaxy far, far away that do not wield the Force. They have a history spanning thousands of years that have been intimately tied with the fate of the Jedi and Sith, often used as pawns by one faction or seen as tentative allies or lethal enemies by the other. Through it all, the Mandalorians maintained their own distinct culture, which has been honored even millennia after their people became known to the galaxy. Star Wars is shifting its focus away from Jedi-centered stories and exploring other narratives, as seen in The Mandalorian & Grogu. The decision to have Din Djarin and Grogu appear in a feature movie instead of The Mandalorian season 4 is unexpected, signaling a significant change for the franchise. The movie will highlight the importance of Mandalorians in the Star Wars galaxy and emphasize non-Jedi characters like Din Grogu, who chose a different path from the Jedi.
With Star Wars' announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu, the franchise is switching gears, transitioning from movies focused on Jedi to explore other stories. The Mandalorian season 3 ending was thrilling, with Din Djarin adopting Din Grogu, taking him on as a Mandalorian apprentice, and agreeing to assist the New Republic with certain jobs. This notably came on the heels of Grogu rejecting the Jedi path, leaving Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple, and reuniting with Din Djarin.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.

The Mandalorian season 3 raises questions about Din Djarin's backstory, particularly regarding his origin and childhood, which have remained a mystery thus far. Despite being raised on Concordia and never having been to Mandalore, Din reveals that his family name was stored on Mandalore, emphasizing its significance and raising questions about why it would be there. The explanation for this could be that Din simplifies the idea for others by generalizing Concordia as Mandalore, as they may not understand the cultural significance. Alternatively, it's possible that the Children of the Watch had communication with Mandalore and stored vital information there. Hopefully, future seasons will provide more clarity.

The Armorer's origin and Mandalorian history remain a mystery, leading to several theories about her character, including her potential connection to Darth Maul and the Mandalorians' dispute with the Jedi. The Armorer's role as a Guardian and her ability to craft Mandalorian steel with a "supernatural quality" suggests a strong connection to the Force and its calming energy. The Armorer exhibits precognitive abilities, seeming to sense what will happen next and guiding Din Djarin on his quest for redemption, which further suggests her Force sensitivity and mystical nature.

Ahsoka episode 5 introduces Darth Maul's Mandalorian super commandos in live-action, showcasing their distinctive horned helmets and violent design. The Siege of Mandalore, depicted in Ahsoka's flashback, saw Maul losing control of Mandalore after facing opposition from Bo-Katan and Ahsoka. Bo-Katan Kryze spent years of her life believing she was a failure. The fall of Mandalore left her aimless, homeless, and hopeless. When the Empire destroyed the planet's central city in retaliation, Bo-Katan lost everything -- including possession of the Darksaber. The Mandalorian revealed that the former planetary leader didn't actually fail when her world was destroyed. Instead, she sacrificed everything to save her people. This is not the most tragic part of the story, however. The true tragedy lies in what Bo-Katan surrendered -- and it's what makes her one of the greatest heroes in Mandalore's history.
On the Night of a Thousand Tears, losing the Darksaber didn't just strip Bo-Katan of her right to lead Mandalore. Moff Gideon claiming the blade for himself revoked Bo's ability to keep an important promise -- the declaration that she would lead Mandalore not just for the good of her people, but also to avenge her sister,...

Ahsoka Tano has had romantic connections with Lux Bonteri and Kaeden Larte, but due to circumstances and their involvement in the war, the relationships didn't work out. Ahsoka's tough stance on attachments is evident in her refusal to train Grogu, emphasizing the vulnerability they can create. While it's possible for Jedi to be in romantic relationships, Ahsoka's focus on doing good may mean she never finds a love interest, similar to Gandalf in Lord of the Rings.
As Ahsoka Tano told her Jedi apprentice, Sabine Wren, in the premiere episodes of her eponymous show, Ahsoka, there is nothing easy about being a Jedi. The life of a Jedi demands a great deal of self-sacrifice, asking people to give up their desires to focus on serving something greater than themselves. Where to Watch Powered by Bo-Katan's story in The Mandalorian season 3 was set up by creator Dave Filoni 10 years ago, showing his long-term vision for the character. Filoni developed a backstory for Bo-Katan, including her relationship with her sister Satine and her father, which was finally referenced in The Mandalorian. Filoni's original plans for Bo-Katan, including her live-action portrayal, came to fruition in The Mandalorian season 3, showcasing his long-standing vision for the character.

Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan Kryze formed an unlikely alliance in the Siege of Mandalore, showcasing their shared history and development as characters throughout The Clone Wars series. The Siege of Mandalore was the final battle in The Clone Wars, and it set the stage for the last four episodes of the show's seventh season, focusing on Ahsoka and Mandalore. This artwork combines elements from Ahsoka's animated design and Rosario Dawson's live-action portrayal, as well as Bo-Katan's animated appearance with the armor worn by Katee Sackhoff in The Mandalorian season 3.

The Mandalorian introduced fans to a whole new corner of the Star Wars galaxy. After a plethora of films and series focusing primarily on characters or events closely tied to the Skywalker Saga, The Mandalorian was something completely different. Not only was the series set in the age of the New Republic -- an era relatively untouched by the Star Wars films -- but it introduced a protagonist who was far removed from the events of the films.
Din Djarin was a Mandalorian foundling, who grew up in the relative isolation of his tribe's covert. This has repeatedly been made clear in The Mandalorian, which sees Din encountering characters and elements of the Star Wars universe that may be familiar to fans, but that are alien to him. Some fans have joked that he doesn't seem to realize he's in Star Wars. But given what has been revealed of Din's background,...

While the 1970s was known as a wild, bold, experimental time in modern cinema—which extended to all genres, including science fiction—the 1980s were best known for… well, we don’t know what, exactly. The rise of the erotic thriller, the action superstar, and cookie-cutter safe high-concept star vehicles, perhaps? As for sci-fi, the decade was marked by both undisputed blockbusters, including the Star Wars and Star Trek sequels, Aliens, and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, as well as some inarguable classics like The Thing, Tron, and Blade Runner. Intriguingly, the more risky ones needed years to find their audience and critical acclaim.
At the same time, sci-fi began to rely less on literary adaptations of the previous decade and more on crossing its streams with other genres, like horror, the Western, and the action thriller—making somewhat of a turn away from the idea-driven films that had come before.

Bo-Katan Kryze becomes the new leader of the Mandalorian clans in The Mandalorian season 3, but she has never truly been a hero. Kryze has had many appearances throughout the Star Wars franchise’s television shows, debuting in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, playing a prominent role in Star Wars Rebels, and becoming one of the lead characters of The Mandalorian. Despite the latter two shows depicting her as a heroic character, she began as an extremist willing to kill or betray anybody - but she never received a proper redemption arc, nor did her ultimate motivation significantly change. The Star Wars franchise has plenty of heroic characters with unscrupulous pasts, yet Kryze has only just begun to undergo such character development.

Since the Mandalorians first settled their place in Star Wars, they've been no strangers to hardship. Despite overcoming the Mythosaur of their home world and several wars with the Jedi Order, nothing was near as devastating to the people of Mandalore as the disastrous manipulations of the Sith Lords Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine. Throughout the latter half of The Clone Wars, Mandalore became a volatile site of constant power struggles and vicious infighting that only worsened with the involvement of the Sith. With both of them using the planet and its people to their own gain, Mandalore became unrecognizable by the time Maul and Palpatine were through with it.
Though Palpatine always likely had his eye on the Mandalorians, Maul's interest in the planet and its politics didn't begin until his unlikely involvement with Pre Vizsla, another of Mandalore's worst malefactors. Vizsla inducted Maul and Savage Opress into their insurrectionist sect Death Watch,...

Katee Sackhoff has a good idea of who should play a live-action Satine on The Mandalorian.
While appearing on the Steve Varley Show, Sackhoff revealed her interest in casting Cate Blanchett as Bo-Katan Kryze's late sister and Duchess of Mandalore from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Despite having no idea whether a Bo-Katan/Satine interaction will happen, Sackhoff joked that much of this is up to Mandalorian co-showrunner Dave Filoni, stating, "That's the cool thing about Filoni is that he already has all the answers to all of this stuff. It's just a matter of whether or not I get to be privy to it or not." She then added, "I wish that we could talk about Satine, you know. I think Cate Blanchett would be amazing."

The Mandalorian star Emily Swallow reacted to fans apologizing for doubting The Armorer.
The actor, who has played the master Beskarsmith since the first season of the Star Wars spinoff, took to Twitter to respond to enthusiasts expressing shame over their Season 3 assumptions. Towards the concluding moments of the latest arc, many believed the Armorer was secretly a spy for the Empire and was working against Din Djarin, Bo-Katan and the other Mandalorians working to restore their home planet. These theories ultimately proved fruitless, prompting Swallow to say that she's "not mad," just disappointed that fans assumed the worst of The Armorer.

This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3.Much of The Mandalorian has centered on the Darksaber, the ancient blade of Mandalorian leadership. Star Wars viewers are used to lightsabers that are blue and green, with occasional exceptions such as Mace Windu's purple blade. But the Darksaber is one of the most unusual blades to date, characterized by its shimmering ebony blade. It was introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, resurfaced as an important plot point in Star Wars Rebels, and has met its ultimate fate in The Mandalorian season 3.
There are still many mysteries surrounding the Darksaber. Given the Darksaber's destruction at the hands of Moff Gideon, it's actually possible Star Wars will never answer these questions. With that being said, though, it is still possible to figure out a lot of what makes the Darksaber unique - and why it has some properties unlike any other known lightsaber.

The Star Wars franchise has featured several Mandalorian characters in canon, with each one belonging to their own unique clan, house, or group. Mandalorians may all wear beskar armor, but that doesn't mean they're all the same, as indicated by their unique symbols and coloring. Each faction has its own history and ideals it strives towards, and Mandalore has a long history of clans fighting against each other. This theme has continued throughout The Mandalorian, with Din Djarin discovering that he's just one of many different kinds of Mandalorians, and Bo-Katan recognized that every clan would be stronger together.
These different Mandalorian factions create a vibrant society that grows and evolves through each era of Star Wars canon. From the Mandalorian Civil Wars to the rebellion against the Empire, each Mandalorian clan has played a different role, adapting to new circumstances and changing loyalties as needed. This rattles Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) because if conflicting Mandalorian factions are organizing instead of remaining divided, then they will be a force to reckon with.

If there's one thing the Naboo Queen-Senator Padmé Amidala has taught us in the "Star Wars" galaxy, you're not a true politician unless you're worthy of the fashion runway. One of the single biggest questions coming out of the second season of "The Mandalorian" was how the ownership of the Darksaber would shake out. The Darksaber itself is the blade of a Mandalorian Jedi, Tarre Vizsla, built centuries ago. Tarre Vizsla was the first Mandalorian Jedi and had a place of respect in the Mandalorian culture. When he died, the Jedi kept his blade — the unique, black-bladed Darksaber — in their temple. Later, the Mandalorians broke in and took it back.
The blade itself got passed down among the leaders of Mandalore. It was said that the leadership of Mandalore and ownership of the Darksaber had to be taken in open combat, but that tradition ended with the installation of the government of Duchess Satine Kryze. She worked to put the warrior past of Mandalore behind them.

From animation to live-action, the Mandalorian known as Bo-Katan Kryze (both iterations played by Katee Sackhoff) has gone through a messy redemption quest. Perhaps "redemption" may be too generous of a word. Kryze is a woman of many facets: extremist warmonger, attempted savior of Mandalore, violator of Mandalorian treaties by teaming up with the Republic military, (apparent) rightful wielder of the Darksaber, and now a guest member of a Mandalorian cult.
Bo-Katan walked many convoluted and compelling paths in the name of liberating her shattered Mandalore homeworld. Like the symbol of the Darksaber, Bo-Katan's idea of liberating and leading Mandalore has assumed many shapes, some unsavory and some noble, but always shaded by gray morality. The most recent chapter of "The Mandalorian, "The Pirate," steers Bo-Katan back into the higher calling of unifying Mandalore, but in a way that also belies the atrocities of her past allegiances.

Bo-Katan has stolen Din Djarin’s Mandalorian story in a surprising, yet exciting The Mandalorian character arc. Introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) made the jump to live-action in The Mandalorian season 2 and has become an essential part of the show ever since. Now, as The Mandalorian momentarily shifts its focus to Bo-Katan, hers and Din's (Pedro Pascal) journeys become more unpredictable.
Going into The Mandalorian season 3, it seemed like Bo-Katan would be an antagonist in Din Djarin’s story. The fact that Bo-Katan lost her allies and fleet somewhere between The Mandalorian season 2’s ending and season 3’s premiere added to the idea that Bo would become a villain. Fortunately, Star Wars is taking Bo-Katan’s Mandalorian story in a much more promising direction.

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan Kryze makes an important decision about the Mythosaur she saw in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4. Mandalorians are never safe, even when they're part of a covert; the remote locations they tend to hide in mean they're subject to predators. Bo-Katan Kryze was already well aware of this truth, and it is reinforced in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4, when she participates in a rescue mission after a Foundling is taken by a raptor.
This rescue mission serves as something of a bonding exercise for the Mandalorians, with Bo-Katan realizing she truly is accepted among the Children of the Watch - given she led the mission. Bo-Katan's armor was damaged during the rescue, and she is honored for her victory by receiving a new piece of armor forged by Emily Swallow's Armorer. Bo-Katan chooses to honor the Mythosaur...

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for The Mandalorian Season 3, episode 3An important location from Star Wars: The Clone Wars Clone Wars locale has made its way to live-action thanks to The Mandalorian season 3, carrying a secret tie to one of Bo-Katan's major Mandalorian twists. Although The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3 takes a detour with a subplot on Coruscant, there are still connections to Bo-Katan and her family history, particularly regarding her sister Satine, Mandalore's former Duchess and past love interest of Obi-Wan Kenobi. As such, there's some key irony at play with this episode and its depiction of Coruscant's Monument Plaza.
The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3 took viewers on something of a side journey, focusing on the fate of Omid Abtahi's Dr. Pershing. It reveals he was taken to Coruscant and accepted into the New Republic's Amnesty Program, and he even got to play tourist for a while, courtesy of fellow...

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 3, "The Convert."
Lady Bo-Katan Kryze has stood on many sides of Mandalore. She began her life in the royal family and watched her father die to protect Mandalore. Later, she joined up with Death Watch, opposing her sister, the Duchess Satine Kryze, and her pacifist ways. When she saw the corruption inside of Death Watch led by Maul, she left and sought to reunite Mandalore once again. She then rallied the Mandalorians, along with Ahsoka Tano and elements of the 501st clone legion, to take back the planet from the clutches of the former Sith warrior, only to watch the Empire take over and install their own puppet in her place.
For years, Bo-Katan continued to seek a way to reunite Mandalore. Finally, the answer was given to her by Sabine Wren in the form of the Darksaber. Bringing the Mandalorians together again,...
