Hotel Artemis is a stylish crime thriller with a grab bag of pulpy characters, cool quips, and teeth rattling action.
Whoa, after five years Jodie Foster comes out of her self-imposed acting semi-retirement to star in writer-director Drew Pearce’s debut passion project centring on a rogues’ gallery of wacky criminals hiding out in Hotel Artemis. It’s an old-school Hollywood boarding house, which doubles up as a members only and black market hospital. Foster brings her trademark steeliness underpinned by a haunting melancholy that has been her bread and butter since Taxi Driver (1976) to the almost nameless role of an agoraphobic nurse scraping by in the shadows of a riot-torn Los Angels in 2028. Yeah, it’s an interesting high-concept idea, but is it any good? Well, Pearce, who’s proven his action and cool quip mettle co-writing the Marmite of Marvel films Iron Man 3 (2013), delivers a stylish crime...

So film fans, are you up for an action-filled visit to the future? Now, this trek isn’t of the “star” variety, we’re not “warp-speeding” to far-off planets in a far-off century. This story is very earth-bound, much like the two Blade Runner flicks, and also within this twenty-first century. The skies aren’t filled with flying cars, rather the sun is nearly obliterated from billowing smoke rising off bombed-out buildings and street skirmishes. Tomorrow’s not a glistening utopia in the next decade, but we’re not a Mad Max wasteland quite yet. Oh, and this story doesn’t focus on the forces of law and order like Max and Rick Deckard. No, the central setting is a haven for criminals, a “members-only” secret hospital that’s taken over several floor of La’s crumbling Hotel Artemis.
It’s 2028, exactly ten years from now, and Los Angeles is a war zone.

No guns. No cops. No killing the other patients. Surprising everyone during last night's The Walking Dead Season 8 finale, a first-ever teaser trailer was unexpectedly dropped for Hotel Artemis. Mary J. Blige, Dee Rees, and Octavia Spencer not only heard their names called during Tuesday morning’s Academy Award nominations announcement, each one made Oscar history for black women in the process.
A nine-time Grammy winning singer, Blige is used to hearing her name called at award shows, but now she has been recognized not once but twice by en entirely different academy. She earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her subtle performance as a sharecropper protecting her family in “Mudbound,” as well as Best Song alongside co-writers Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson for “Mighty River” from that film. With these two nominations Blige becomes the first person to earn bids for both acting and songwriting in the same year. She also becomes the first black woman to earn multiple Oscar nominations in a single year.
Also making history in her own right is Blige’s “Mudbound” director Dee Rees.

More than six years after the Best Picture nominee The Help took the careers of Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer to new heights, the actresses are reuniting for an untitled Christmas comedy. The project was at the center of a huge bidding war that Universal eventually won, over 20th Century Fox and Paramount, with the pitch coming from Jessica Chastain herself and her Freckle Films production president Kelly Carmichael, who both wrote the treatment, with Peter Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians) attached to write the script. Both Chastain and Carmichael are set to produce through their Freckle Films banner, alongside Maven Pictures' Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler.
Both Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer will portray two women who are trying to brave the elements and get back home for Christmas, although no further story details were given for this Jessica Chastain Holiday Comedy. Executive VP of production Erik Baiers and...

The Star Trek franchise will be 50 years old this September. It’s one of the most popular and enduring of all TV and film franchises, still going strong nearly 50 years after its debut in 1966. A third film of the rebooted series is in the works. Cinelinx looks at the ever-popular sci-fi property as it warps into its 50th year.
Star Trek, a show that didn’t do very well in the ratings when it first debuted, has become a multi-media monster. It has gone from television to cartoons, novels, comic books, video games and films. Many of the character names have become an iconic part of pop-culture. The real-life space shuttle Enterprise was named in honor of the space vessel from Star Trek. The whole concept of the sci-fi convention was begun by the fan-created ‘Trek’ conventions of the early seventies. Few franchises can claim to have had the impact...

‘Body Horror’ is a term synonymous with Canadian director David Cronenberg. His early work in the horror field (Rabid, The Brood, The Fly) all share connective tissue through the theme of internal horror – a transformation or catharsis from within (always for the worse) that strikes the viewer in a very personal way. Shivers (1975), aka They Came from Within, is his first feature film - a clever, creepy, and gritty introduction to the sub-genre he helped create.
Distributed by Cinepix Film Properties Inc. (Canada) and Trans American Films (Us) in October ’75 and July ’76 respectively, and produced on a budget of $179,000 (Cad), Shivers played at theaters and Drive-Ins all across North America in the summer of ’76, and up to that point was the most profitable Canadian film produced. Critics were generally kind, including Roger Ebert who thought it was well made, with genuine style and talent on display. There was a new player in the horror world,...

From Star Trek: Generations through to Star Trek: Nemesis - here are 47 nerdy spots in the Next Generation films...
Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. We found lots of nerdy spots in the first six films here.
This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.
Oh, and there are some major spoilers...

The nut house. The loony bin. Whatever your term for it, we all know it well... the insane asylum. It is one of the more unsettling settings in which a horror film might play out. To celebrate the December 31st release of Image's Sanitarium, we bring you our Top 11 Insane Asylum Horror Films.
As far as honorable mentions, one of my all-time favorite horror moments is in the insane asylum at the end of Psycho when Norman has completely become Mother. As the scene is very short, we kept it off the list and simply gave it an Hm.
Other notable nuthouse films include the Santa-themed sequel Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 and more hillbillies gone awry in Wrong Turn 4. Give us your picks below.

FX’s American Horror Story has helped change the way we consume terror tales on television. First of all, each season is self-contained and although some performers can be seen as different characters in each of the three seasons, they are entirely different stories. The limited nature of the premise allows the producers to nab major performers and it has worked with great success, judging by the Golden Globe and Emmy nominations it has been receiving. By having a strong story and an ensemble of repertory players, anchored by the amazing Jessica Lange, the series keeps you from ever getting bored.

American Horror Story: Asylum
Stars: Jessica Lange, Chloe Sevigny, Joseph Fiennes, James Cromwell, Evan Peters, Adam Levine, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Zachary Quinto, Clea DuVall, Sarah Paulson | Written by Tim Minear | Directed by Bradley Buecker
How could I not love a show like American Horror Story?
Think about it. It’s a season long anthology built around the conceit that 13 episodes equal one story. I like the first season story revolving around the Harmon family moving into a house that has a history longer than time. It’s just so that said history is a broken bloody one that took the lives of the family and spawned a whole hell of a lot of evil. It was an everything but the kitchen sink kind of storytelling and while it was gripping, it was absolutely clear from the get-go that topping the heights and lows of season one would be a tall order.

Everyone loves a bad boy. The snarling mustache twirlers get all of the fame and fortune -- the No. 1 spot on movie-geek lists, the Halloween costumes, the cool quotes -- and none of them have to worry about being called a witch.
But here at NextMovie, we're all about the bad girls. We love a lady who isn't afraid to embrace her nasty side in order to get what she wants.
In honor of "Savages" and Salma Hayek's role as a brutal drug cartel leader, we've gathered up the coolest and cruelest women to grace the silver screen. We're a little worried about ranking them, because if there's one thing we know about these vicious villainesses, it's that they don't like competition. But we did. Now, you read. We'll run.
15. Rebecca Romijn as Mystique in the 'X-Men' Movies (2000-06)
Mystique's level of menace shifts with every new "X-Men" installment.

For the past eight years, Emmy voters have made one thing abundantly clear: they love Mariska Hargitay. With eight consecutive nominations and counting for the "Law & Order: Svu" star, Hargitay is now tied for second place in the battle for the most career Emmy bids for Best Drama Actress. Both Michael Learned ("The Waltons" and "Nurse") and Sharon Gless ("Cagney & Lacey" and "The Trials of Rosie O'Neill") share in Hargitay's wealth of eight bids apiece. So who could possibly have more Emmy nods? Cue the "Murder, She Wrote" theme song. That's right, Angela Lansbury leads with an astounding 12 Emmy nominations in this category. Lansbury played TV's favorite author/crime-fighter Jessica Fletcher on the long-running CBS drama throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Sure, her Emmy honor is slightly diminished when factoring in that she was never able to actually win any of her bids, bu...

Saving Abel has a new album dropping on June 8th entitled Miss America, and since the guys are horror fans, they thought they'd pay a little tribute to some of the not-so-wholesome women who have haunted their dreams and nightmares over the years.
The band consists of Jared Weeks-Vocals, Jason Null-Guitars, Scott Bartlett-Guitars, Eric Taylor-Bass, and Blake Dixon-Drums. All five of them collaborated to compile the list of their Top Ten favorite female villains. (An honorable mention went to commentator Nancy Grace.)
10. Medusa (Clash of the Titans) - A mythological creature called a Gorgon. A half-snake, half-human creature, which is the same way I describe a few ex-girlfriends and oddly enough wouldn't mind seeing beheaded.
9. The Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton, The Wizard of Oz) - You can't talk about female villains without mentioning The Wicked Witch. She's a fixture in just about everyone's childhood horror memory bank.
