Not only did we get Friday the 13th Part 2 and Halloween II that year, but we also got a ton of others like My Bloody Valentine, The Prowler, Madman, Just Before Dawn, The Funhouse, Night School, Hell Night, Happy Birthday to Me, Bloody Birthday, Graduation Day, the list goes on… and includes The Burning (watch it Here), the movie we’re looking back at with the latest episode in our video series The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Happy Friday, dear readers! One of our annual traditions here at Daily Dead is that, once a year, we take a few weeks to celebrate a notable time period in the horror genre. And since 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of all the great classics that were released during 1981, we thought it only made sense to pay tribute to the films of that year with our Class of 1981 series.

Starting on Monday, August 16th, we will be kicking off our two-week celebration of the killer horror and memorable sci-fi movies that were released throughout 1981. Exclusive: Frontières Platform, the genre-focused event run by Fantasia and Cannes’ Marche du Film, returns to the French fest for another edition this year, with 13 projects selected to take part in the showcase, running July 10-11. Scroll down for the full list.

The event is technically taking place physically, as per Cannes’ commitment to staging an in-person industry event in July, but Frontières has informed participants that it does not encourage them to travel during a pandemic and that all pitches will be screened online. If participants do wish to travel to Cannes, however, the event will allow them to do so, and a representative of Frontières will be in attendance, restrictions allowing.

Raven Banner has picked up world sales on creature feature The Creeps starring Christopher Lambert, which is set to start production in Finland this month.

Marko Mäkilaakso directs and Miika J. Norvanto of Black Lion Pictures and Timo Puustinen of Frozen Flame Pictures are producing.

The Creeps tells the story of two American youngsters who prepare to celebrate Monsterfest in a Finnish ski resort that gets overrun by small creatures. Chris Cavalier (Hidden Figures) and Iiro Panula (Bordertown) star alongside Lambert.

Let’s take a minute and give thanks for the Mad Scientist. Like any other cinematic profession, there can be good and evil examples of both; some want to heal the world, others want to crush it. The Brain (1988) gives us a villain squarely in the latter camp, and he’s not even the head baddie (see: title). A modern day love letter to the genre, The Brain is weird enough for a passé crowd yet conventional enough to work as a straight up monster movie.

Given a limited release in its homeland in November, the achingly Canadian film was released stateside on video in December. Some critics appreciated the good-natured update to the schlocky sci-fi fests of yore; others did not, and to them I say they can’t all be Invasion of the Body Snatchers, bunky.

Greetings, everyone! Welcome to what is the final Blu-ray and DVD recap of 2018, as it seems like we have no major genre home media releases coming home next week on Christmas. That being said, the year is ending on a strong note, as we have a number of essential titles hitting various formats this Tuesday.

Shelf sitters aren’t always bad news in my eyes; take for instance Superstition (1982). This Canadian curiosity was filmed in ’81, released abroad in ’82, and finally washed ashore in North America in early ’85; it is by turns goofy, gory, dumb, and creative in its kills, and is a great addition to a sub-genre I’m just going to call Italiadjacent, where films from this side of the pond look to that side for aesthetical inspiration and end up with nonsensical storylines. And while Superstition tries to keep it together, it can’t help but let loose and summon up its inner Argento from time to time.

Also known as The Witch, Superstition was part of the U.K.’s notorious early ‘80s Video Nasties scene, but landed on the non-prosecutable Section 3 list, which I guess were films still really bad for you, but not “go to jail” bad for renting or selling them.

So you’re wading through piles of slasher films from the ‘80s, keen on discovering a lost gem far removed from the normal gang in the woods or high school sis-boom-bah stab and gab. You’re thinking maybe a different setting will yield a fresh take, already tired tropes blurring your vision and making the distinction between a hockey mask and a fencing one harder by the day. Well…have you tried the hospital yet? Most folks are terrified of the antiseptic halls and robotic empathy doled out by uncaring staff. (Yes, yes, they also save lives, I know. I’m trying to set a mood, dammit.) And if you do decide to enter the medical field, I strongly suggest you pay a visit to Hospital Massacre (1981), Israeli King of Schlock Boaz Davidson’s wild attempt at a horror comedy, where some of the humor is even intentional.

First released...

When I think of some of my favorite B films of the 1970s, my mind tends to drift towards the works of the late filmmaker William Girdler. This man made nine movies in six years before his tragic death in ’78 at the age of thirty; chief among them Abby (’74), Grizzly (’76), and Day of the Animals (’77). Now, quantity obviously doesn’t equal quality, and he made a few outright stinkers. But he was exciting to me because he became a better, more confident filmmaker with each film; this is especially evident with his final release, The Manitou (1978), your typical ancient Native American little person demon growing out of the back of a woman’s neck who fights the heroes in space with laser beams kind of flick. You know the type.

Independently produced, The Manitou was released by Avco Embassy in late April, with a June rollout across North America, and worldwide the following year.

Blame The Bad Seed (1956) for every murderous moppet that has skipped across the screen in subsequent years. Village of the Damned, The Omen, The Good Son, The Children, and many more have explored the taboo of killer kiddies. One of the oddest of the bunch is Ed Hunt’s Bloody Birthday (1981), a ridiculously fun turn with not just one, but three mini-Mansons on hand to clean up the schoolyard.

Well, that’s a bit of a misnomer, as our rascally trio tends to focus on grown ups, what with their stupid rules against homicide and premature burial. (Don’t worry – one of the protagonists is a classmate who is put in mortal danger. All’s fair.) Bloody Birthday was rolled out twice; first in limited release in April of ’81, and then in ’86 (also limited release). The film made its money back but didn’t earn any good grace from critics...

If there’s one thing I love, it’s 1970s made-for-tv horror films. I remember sitting in front of the television as a kid and watching a plethora of films such as Gargoyles, Bad Ronald, Satan’s School for Girls, Horror at 37,000 Feet, Devil Dog: Hound of Hell, Scream Pretty Peggy, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Moon of the Wolf and The Initiation of Sarah just to name a few. Some of those are better than others, but all were fun.

When I think back, there have been some legendary names associated with small screen horrors. Genre masters John Carpenter (Halloween), Steven Spielberg (Jaws), Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street), Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Joseph Stefano (Psycho) all took shots at television...

Halloween is coming and we thought with all those kids that are out trick or treating, dressing up to be grown ups, that we would give these halfstacks their due, children can be creepy as well. The staff has got together and compiled thirteen films where children are to be feared.

The Children From The Children

Tom Shankland’s film shares themes in common with a couple other “youth gone mad” films of the past, but these kids are terrifying in their own way. A virus of some sort is turning the children into blodthirsty, malevolent creatures. They still look sweet, but they’re ready to kill, kill, kill. The scary imps in Cronenberg’s The Brood are spooky, but nothing freaks me out more than a normal looking child becoming violent. Halloween Hell focuses on a devil doll that is rumored to have been carved out of lava that came straight from Hell. It provides a home for a demon that has also come straight from Hell.

This devil doll is the star of a pay-per-view reality TV show that is hosted by a psycho who believes that he is Count Dracula.

Six young adventurers (three male and three female) are offered $100,000 to spend all of Halloween locked in a room with the devil doll, who has reportedly caused the deaths or suicides of over fifty people during the last two centuries, always on the Halloween nights when there is a full moon.

This week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are an eclectic bunch, to say the least. Not only is Steve Miner’s criminally overlooked horror/comedy creature feature Lake Placid swimming its way onto Blu-ray, but Severin Films is also releasing a trio of controversial cult classics- Bloody Moon, The Baby and Bloody Birthday-all in high definition for the first time ever.

The Time Machine is also getting a Blu-ray release this week, along with Gareth Evans’ stunning action masterpiece The Raid 2 and a handful of indie horror films, including the wickedly entertaining horror musical Stage Fright starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. Overall, it’s a good week to be a genre fan with oddball tastes because there’s a whole lot of wonderfully weird stuff arriving this Tuesday.

A birthday (or random holiday), killer kids and a total eclipse…all of this sounds like the perfect combination for a horror film. Bloody Birthday is a slasher movie that appeared in the eighties, this should be more than a hint what you’ll see. Conscious-free kids who kill, a man living like a baby, and a killer stalking Spanish schoolgirls: Severin Films is plucking these three stories from the old-school horror shelf and bringing them to Blu-ray this summer, and we have the release details for you now.

Set for a July 8th home media release, the Blu-ray releases of 1981′s Bloody Birthday, 1973′s The Baby, and 1981′s Bloody Moon should excite fans of these grindhouse films and bring new viewers in, as well. Here are the release details from Severin Films:

It's been nearly 30 years since Edward Hunt last directed a film, with 1981's Bloody Birthday being his most well-known effort. Later this year he makes his long-awaited return with Halloween Hell, and we've got all the details for ya today. Read on, fiends!

Well, no, he doesn't suck in the bad sense. We're talking orally here as Eric Roberts will be starring as Dracula in the new project from the director of the 1988 film The Brain and 1981's Bloody Birthday, Edward Hunt. Read on for details.

Written and directed by Hunt, Halloween Hell star Roberts alongside Sam Aotaki, Evan Bittencourt, Lola Klimenteva, Steve Turner, Elizabeth Peterson, Paul Stanko and Andre L. Walker as the big badass demon you see below.

This marks Hunt's return to filmmaking, and we can't wait to see what he's got up his sleeve.

Plot details were not available at press time so you'll just have to make do with the fact that yes, Eric Fuckin' Roberts is playing Dracula and then dig on the aforementioned eye candy. You're welcome.

Censorship standards have become looser over the years in some ways but much stricter in others. Some types of violence and nudity are easier to get away with – for example if one can prove that it’s being done in a comedic or satirical fashion, it is more likely to be allowed. But if the violence is exploitative or too realistic, it is an entirely different story. There are films from years past that got away with extremely brutal, realistic, graphic acts of violence and or exploitative nudity that would very likely raise more than a few red flags by today’s standards. The fantastic thing about the VHS years is that the poster art was frequently hand drawn and frequently had very little or nothing to do with the actual film. If you picked a film based solely on the box cover, you had a pretty good chance of being disappointed or at least surprised. Distributors seemed to see a snazzy box cover as a good way to get some mileage out of a subpar film. That still goes on today, but it seems to happen less frequently and the artwork just isn’t the same. In spite of the trickery that duped more than a couple of horror fans in the late ‘70s through the early ‘90s, there are some terrific and legitimate films that have terribly misleading – albeit awesome – cover art. Like most horror fans, I'm not always pro remake. There are some films that simply should not be remade. However, I am supportive of remaking a film if the creative team behind the reboot can bring something new to the table or improve upon what the original film did, in some way. Case in point, Tobe Hooper improved on the source material in his 2004 remake of The Toolbox Murders. Hooper's remake was a more cohesive film than the original and was more effective at keeping its viewer engaged throughout the film. The original was poorly paced with the entire middle of the film being exhaustively sluggish. As for bringing something new to the table, James Gunn and Zak Snyder didn't outdo the original Dawn of the Dead with their 2004 reimagining, but that's not what the duo was trying for.
