It’s officially spooky season, and if you’re looking to watch something a little scarier than love in the afternoon, check out these horror movies and TV shows starring some familiar faces from daytime.
From Drama To Horror
While many soap stars tend to stick to dramas or Hallmark Channel romcoms – find out what soap stars will be on Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas this year – some have branched out to an unexpected genre: horror. If you want to add some familiar faces to a spooky movie night this Halloween, add these to your list of must-watches.
General Hospital
Idle Hands, starring Kelly Monaco
This 1999 horror film stars Devon Sawa and Jessica Alba and follows a teenaged boy who’s hand becomes possessed and goes on a murderous rampage. It certainly didn’t win any Oscars, but it does feature a young Kelly Monaco as one of the victims.

What do you get when you cross a glossy all-star business drama with a kinky Italian horror flick, a German crime procedural, and “Fiddler on the Roof?” That insane mix may sound too good to be true, but it’s not — it’s a movie that actually exists. It’s called “Bloodline,” it was released by Paramount in 1979, and after years of intermittent accessibility on home video, it’s now available in a beautiful Blu-ray edition from the boutique label Vinegar Syndrome.
At the time of its release, “Bloodline” wasn’t a success by any criteria, but it was a major release thanks to an international cast consisting of Audrey Hepburn, Ben Gazzara, James Mason, Romy Schneider, Omar Sharif, Beatrice Straight (just a few years after her Oscar-winning turn in “Network”), Irene Papas and others. The fact that it was based on a novel by bestselling author Sidney Sheldon — who...

The slasher first established itself as the dominant art form of 1980s horror by capitalizing on the calendar. Arguably beginning with Black Christmas (1974) and Halloween (1978), the formula began to solidify by setting brutal killing sprees on the dates of beloved holidays. With the subsequent success of Friday the 13th (1980), directors clamored to claim their own occasion and create a defining slasher film with a series of themed kills highlighting seasonal iconography. It was a win-win for both filmmakers and audiences–an annually rewatchable horror film allowing genre fans to eschew saccharine traditions and celebrate in style.
Lee Thompson’s Happy Birthday to Me (1981) features a slightly more nebulous occasion–after all, every day of the year is someone’s birthday. Rejecting the concept’s seasonality, Thompson and screenwriters John C.W. Saxton, Peter Jobin, and Timothy Bond patterned the mysterious killer’s actions around the idea of a grisly birthday party.

Between its striking title, lurid artwork, and the timing of its release — 1981 bore the likes of Halloween II, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, The Funhouse, The Prowler, and Happy Birthday to Me — one might mistake Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (also known as Night Warning) for a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. While it vaguely fits in the slice-and-dice mold, the film is anything but generic.
The prologue — which may have inspired Final Destination 2‘s unforgettable opening sequence — was directed by Michael Miller with cinematography by Jan de Bont, but Miller was let go by the production after falling behind schedule. He was replaced by TV veteran William Asher, who shot the remainder of the film with Robbie Greenberg as director of photography.
14 years after his parents were killed in an over-the-top car crash, Billy Lynch witnesses his infantilizing aunt-turned-guardian, Cheryl Roberts, kill a repair man in cold blood.

Filmmaker Eli Roth has been working within the horror genre nearly exclusively since 2002, as his only non-horror feature to date is his 2018 remake of "Death Wish." The upcoming sci-fi/action video game adaptation "Borderlands" is set to break Roth's horror streak a second time when it (hopefully) releases next year. Since seven of Roth's nine films are horror, it's a little surprising to realize that "Thanksgiving," the feature-length adaptation of Roth's faux-trailer from 2007's "Grindhouse," is Roth's first official slasher movie.
As such, "Thanksgiving" sees Roth in classic slasher mode, paying tribute to a wide variety of predecessors in the subgenre ranging from classics like "Halloween" 1978 and "Scream" 1996 to more under-seen slasher gems like "Mother's Day" and "Happy Birthday to Me." Despite Roth's long and varied career, "Thanksgiving" was no simple parade, as he developed and shot the film within a single calendar year.

Sharon Acker, a Canadian film, television and theater actor best known for her roles in “Point Blank,” “The New Perry Mason” and “Happy Birthday to Me,” has died. She was 87.
Acker’s death was confirmed by her cousin, David Glover, in a tribute to his family member on Facebook: “My wife Judy and I were very close with Sharon and we spoke regularly even after she moved back to Toronto to be close to with daughters and family. I can never forget Sharon’s million dollar smile. She made everyone she came in contact with feel so much better.”
According to reports, Acker died March 16 at her retirement home in Toronto.
Across an acting career spanning four decades, Acker found one of her most enduring roles in the 1967 neo-noir “Point Blank,” helmed by John Boorman. Acker played the wife to Lee Marvin’s lead, who betrays her conman husband after a robbery on Alcatraz.

Horror fans have Canada to thank for a lot of their favorite movies from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Black Christmas, Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me, My Bloody Valentine — all these fright flicks and more were in fact made in Canada. And for a lot of these vintage movies, they were produced in the Great White North because of an enticing tax incentive. It was all part of a desire to fire up the country’s movie industry. And so long as these potential productions were chiefly shot and edited in Canada, as well as starred mostly Canadian actors, the movies’ costs were up to 100 tax deductible. Like those before him, producer Peter R. Simpson (Prom Night III: The Last Kiss) acted on this attractive business offer, though his timing could have been better. By the time Curtains came out in 1983, Canada’s most significant era of “B” movies was...

Ginny’s life is perfect, but as the audience slowly learns over the course of Happy Birthday to Me, that was not always the case. And as the 1981 film’s title implies, Ginny’s increasing sense of dread has everything to do with a traumatic birthday from her past. Unfortunately for Ginny, another frightful birthday awaits her […]

“After a harsh separation from her boyfriend. Ping, a Taiwanese girl living in New York City is reconsidering her life. One day, she meets a new neighbor in the same apartment with her, she starts knowing how to change her pace.”
“Happy Birthday to Me” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
Attune with the difficulties of romance in a constantly moving society, Po-Yu Chen’s “Happy Birthday to Me” looks to capture the beauty of chance and the hardships of falling out of love. Taking place in a bustling New York City, the love story is not unlike one told many times over, but the short film captures that timelessness of chance encounters in a constantly moving city. Focused on a new start after a harsh break-up, the production is certain to resonate with many, though this is largely in part to Chen’s ability to capture...

Finally, the Daily Dead “Class Of” series has reached my beloved birth year, 1981. For the genre, 1981 signifies an important moment in the history of horror. With the introduction of two slasher icons, Michael Myers in 1978 and Jason Voorhees in 1980; the beginning of the sequel boom that would dominate the rest of the decade was born in 1981 with Halloween 2 and Friday the 13th Part 2. These two sequels are merely the introduction to the rise of slasher cinema for the 80s, with 1981 providing a variety of examples like The Burning, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Funhouse, Happy Birthday to Me, Final Exam, Night School, Student Bodies, and My Bloody Valentine.
1981 also proved the best year in the history of horror for werewolf movies. The iconic American Werewolf in London set the gold standard in practical transformation effects. The Howling is a demonstration of how horror and humor can coexist perfectly. Wolfen...

Many of our most iconic slasher/exploitation films of old are in fact Canadian and were born out of the Canadian Government tax incentives that were available from 1975 to 1982. I'm talking gems like Black Christmas, Terror Train, Happy Birthday To Me, My Bloody Valentine, Visiting Hours, Prom Night, The Brood, Scanners, Shivers, Ilsa She Wolf Of The SS and the list goes on! Kim Shattuck, the singer and guitarist who co-founded and led the SoCal punk band the Muffs alongside contributions to Pixies and Nofx, died Wednesday at the age of 56. A rep for Shattuck’s band the Coolies confirmed her death to Rolling Stone. The cause was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als).
“We are very sorry to announce the passing of our bandmate and dear friend Kim Shattuck,” the Muffs’ Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald wrote on Facebook. “Besides being a brilliant songwriter, rocking guitarist and singer/screamer extraordinaire, Kim was a true force of nature.

The cast and filmmakers of Happy Death Day 2U get us all caught up on the franchise and its future(s).
The original Happy Death Day in 2017 was a fresh twist on the slasher movie, a kind of cross between Happy Birthday to Me and Groundhog Day in which a troubled college student named Tree (Jessica Rothe) finds herself reliving her birthday over and over again, each time ending with her death at the hands of a masked killer. It’s only through her own realizations about her behavior and the way she evolves into a better person that Tree can solve the mystery and (literally) get her life back on track.
The comedic horror thriller was such a surprise success that Blumhouse Productions, the company behind this and many other genre hits, immediately fast-tracked a sequel called Happy Death Day 2U. Directed again by Christopher Landon...

Economy was the key to a solid TV movie back in the day; sure, now you can stretch out a story over ten episodes and watch ‘em all at once. *Pulls up pants even higher* But back in my time you had 75 to 90 minutes tops to get your point across, and we liked it! Even better, a small screen flick like She Cried Murder (1973) does it in a speedy 66, omitting unnecessary tropes such as love stories, secondary characters, and plot.
Okay, I’m just being cheeky; She Cried Murder is so lean that all it really has time for is a cat and mouse chase between a woman who witnessed a murder and the fella who did it; motive is covered quite tidily so it isn’t all chase, and what it does accomplish is effective enough. Not enough to deter folk from watching the ABC Tuesday Movie of the...

1981 was really peak business for slasher films; The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, Happy Birthday to Me, Halloween II, My Bloody Valentine and many more jockeyed for a piece of box office pie, with most turning a profit and then some. It only made sense for Euro-horror to want in on the action; after all, the giallo was a big influence on the aesthetic and body count of the slasher, so why shouldn’t they try something more attuned to mainstream audiences at the time? If you put it in the hands of Jess Franco however, you end up with Bloody Moon (1981), a delirious and grand stab fest that still ends up being closer to a giallo than intended. You can take the boy out of Spain, but you can’t take Spain out of the boy.
Well that’s not completely true as Bloody Moon was filmed in Spain,...

I was never a strong student in high school, and it was completely for lack of trying; I had smart teachers with good intentions who tried their best to impart knowledge that I simply felt I had no use for. Ignorance, thy name is Scott and I’m certainly not proud of it. Anyway, I definitely never had the roadblocks facing the good students of Class of 1984 (1982), Mark L. Lester’s mesmerizing, brutal, dystopian look at the very worst of the educational system through the eyes of a teacher trying to wade his way through a barrel of diseased apples.
Distributed by United Film Distribution Company stateside in August with a world wide rollout continuing into ’83, Class of 1984 certainly rang some bells in the press; some critics offered effusive praise (such as Roger Ebert), while others were less kind. Until you start watching killer rat movies, you don’t realize how few killer rat movies there are. It’s not a sub-genre that sparked off franchises (does Willard and its sequel Ben count? Let me know) or inspired Funko toys, but rather has films strewn here and there throughout horror history. Today we’re scurrying back to my particular turf for Deadly Eyes (1982), Golden Harvest’s Canadian-lensed attempt to move over from Kung Fu to Rodent Fu. (Sorry Joe Bob Briggs, I couldn’t resist.)
Released in October by Golden Harvest (the Honk Kong based studio with nearly 300 production credits) in Canada and stateside by Warner Brothers the following April, Deadly Eyes (aka Night Eyes) laid droppings all over the place according to critics and audiences alike, and was quickly relegated to clamshell heaven. Was it a film ahead of its time? God no. But Deadly Eyes is way more fun than I remembered,...

After working on Caboblanco, Thompson moved onto the slasher genre with Happy Birthday to Me (1981). Whilst by no means the best the genre has to offer, Happy Birthday to Me proved to be an enjoyable horror film, and definitely better than some similar films made in the wake of John Carpenters Halloween (1978). Between Caboblanco and 10 to Midnight, Bronson kept himself busy, starring in director Peter Hunt’s Death Hunt (1981), which found the actor sharing the screen once again with Lee Marvin, the first time since working together on The Dirty Dozen. Opening to mixed reviews, Death Hunt is still an excellent old style action movie, and one of Bronson’s best later star vehicles. Death Hunt was followed by Death Wish 2 (1982),...

Review by Roger Carpenter
In his heyday, director/producer Ovidio Assonitis was affectionately known as “The Rip-Off King” due to his blatant copying of popular, more expensive hit films. Thus, we have Beyond the Door (1974), an Exorcist-style film; Tentacles (1977), a killer octopus film in the vein of Jaws; and even the sequel Piranha II: The Spawning (1981), which he famously directed after firing James Cameron shortly after filming commenced. Always on the lookout for the next big idea in exploitation, it isn’t surprising that he would also jump on the slasher bandwagon as well. Madhouse is Assonitis’ entry into that particular subgenre of film.
Though produced in late 1980 or early 1981 in Savannah, Georgia, Madhouse wasn’t released stateside until 1983. So while the film bears more than a passing resemblance to the classic slasher Happy Birthday to Me (also made in 1981), it is unclear how much of a direct rip-off one film is of the other.
