Fear Street: Prom Queen, the continuation of the Fear Street film franchise that began with the release of the trilogy of Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666 on the Netflix streaming service back in the summer of 2021, made its way through production last year, and recently it was announced that the new film will be available to watch on Netflix as of May 23rd. With that date right around the corner, Collider has heard from director Matthew Palmer that he aimed to make this movie feel like a lost ’80s slasher classic!
Author R.L. Stine has written over 100 books that have been published under the various Fear Street banners. While the initial trilogy of films wasn’t directly based on any specific Fear Street book, the new movie will be telling a version of the story Stine crafted for his 1992 book The Prom Queen.

It’s almost prom season, and a pair of new images from Fear Street: Prom Queen debuted on Collider.
Releasing May 20 on Netflix, the fourth film in the Fear Street franchise is based on the 1992 R.L. Stine novel The Prom Queen.
“Visually, we actually took a lot of inspiration from movies like River’s Edge and Blue Velvet, in terms of nailing down an authentic ’80s look and a wrong side of the tracks feeling for Shadyside,” director Matt Palmer told Collider.
“As the movie progresses, and we move into prom itself, the visual look becomes more heightened, falling more in line with the slasher classics of the ’80s, as well as the Italian giallos of the same period. Some of my favorite directors — John Carpenter, Dario Argento and David Lynch — also feel like influences on the visual look and movie as a whole.”

Joe and Anthony Russo, the Cleveland-born filmmakers who started off directing small-scale comedies and episodes of “Arrested Development” before being knighted by the Marvel Studios apparatus, have a long history of saying provocative stuff in interviews. Sometimes you get the sense that they truly believe what they’re saying (Anthony proclaimed that everything developed at their studio Agbo “has universe potential”), other times it comes off as something more cartoonishly antagonistic (like when Joe said “this idea that the theater is a sacred space is bulls–t”).
But in the lead-up to their latest, a $320 million sci-fi extravaganza for Netflix called “The Electric State,” they were oddly quiet.
There was no declaration of intent, no premature announcement of a series of interconnected movies and series that make up a vast, overarching “Electric State” mythology. Instead, there was a smattering of polite interviews and a worldwide promotional tour that included stops in Los Angeles,...

If you had run into the brothers Joe and Anthony Russo as 20-somethings circa 1994, they probably wouldn’t have seemed like guys who’d become two of the biggest directors of all time. Both were living in their native Cleveland, where Anthony was a law student, and Joe, 17 months his junior, was attending drama school. Neither felt quite satisfied with their chosen path, so they both dropped out and pivoted to filmmaking, maxing out their credit cards to fund their $30,000 debut feature, Pieces, which has never been released but nonetheless caught the eye of a notable mentor, Steven Soderbergh, when it screened at Slamdance in 1997.
From there, they took a winding road that led them to directing and executive producing critically adored (but ultimately canceled) shows such as Arrested Development, Happy Endings and Community, before landing a meeting at Marvel Studios. At the premiere of Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces at the Crosby Street Hotel, Selena Gomez commanded attention in sky-high Christian Louboutin Condora Strap pumps—yet still appeared noticeably shorter beside her co-star, Steve Martin. Her elegant ensemble featured a custom Oscar de la Renta dress, perfectly complemented by sleek Wolford Individual 20 tights.
Though she often embraces height-enhancing stilettos, the Wizards of Waverly Place actress officially stands 5 feet 4 ¾ inches (164.5 cm) and wears a US shoe size 7.5. However, Selena has playfully rounded up her height in interviews, confidently claiming to be 5’5″.

When it comes to Thanksgiving Horror, the 1980s slasher movie Blood Rage has emerged as the reigning holiday champion for many fans. To be fair, the pickings are slim – Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is the most recent example – but this slasher is cut from the same charming cloth as the likes of Pieces and The Mutilator.
In other words, it delivers on both wackiness and gore.
Originally filmed in 1983, Blood Rage (also known as Slasher) didn’t get released until 1987, and that was a heavily edited version under the title Nightmare at Shadow Woods. It wasn’t until the film hit VHS that the gore was restored, though it still remained a rather obscure title until Arrow Video’s Blu-ray release pushed the slasher into the spotlight back in 2015.

Warning: Contains spoilers for One Piece Fan Letter. One Piece Fan Letter is a brand-new One Piece special created to celebrate the animes 25th anniversary. The special loosely adapts the novel Straw Hat Stories, and just like the novel, it chronicles the lives of ordinary people in the world of One Piece whom the Straw Hats have touched, although its reworked to be more of a linear narrative as opposed to disconnected vignettes.

Will Trent season 3 is delayed until 2025, but fans can enjoy Pieces of Her on Netflix in the meantime. Pieces of Her offers surprises like Will Trent but is a limited series with only eight episodes. Will Trent has more seasons and episodes, making it a better Karin Slaughter adaptation than Pieces of Her.
The bad news is that Will Trent season 3 won't premiere until early 2025, but the good news is that Netflix has the perfect series for fans to peruse in the meantime. The ABC police procedural is based on Karin Slaughter's crime fiction book series of the same name. As the title suggests, Will Trent revolves around Will Trent (Ramn Rodrguez), a special agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (Gbi) with keen skills, making him one of the best. Will also grew up in foster care, which significantly shaped him as a person and as someone working in law enforcement.

Gohan/Great Saiyaman replaces Peter Parker/Spider-Man in homage to an iconic comic book cover from The Amazing Spider-Man #50 from 1967. Anime Empire (@animeempirestudios) creates inventive fanart mixing popular nerd properties in unique ways, like a Majin Buu x Venom mash-up and even a Pokmon x Attack on Titan piece! The crossover piece features Gohan as "The Great Saiya-Man," perfectly aligning with Spider-Man's naming convention too, along with other little remixed details.
The worlds of Dragon Ball and Marvel Comics dont have much in common save for being the home for some of fictions greatest heroes, with Gohan and Spider-Man fitting that bill perfectly for their respective universes. And in a new piece of fanart, Gohan replaces Peter Parker in an homage to one of Spider-Mans most iconic comic book covers, with Spidey swapped out for the one and only Great Saiyaman!

In Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," the ordinarily diplomatic and level-headed Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) inexplicably cracks. The Borg -- an evil race of all-consuming cyborgs -- have traveled back in time to the year 2063 to muck around with human history. They intend to stop a key moment of "Star Trek" history and assimilate as many people as they can into their unthinking mechanical collective. Several years before, Picard had been assimilated by the Borg, and was only rescued and extracted at the last minute.
Healing took a long time, but Picard faced the Borg on several occasions thereafter, and was finally able to confront them with control and thoughtfulness. In "First Contact," however, the Borg attack again, and Picard -- for whatever reason -- can't handle it this time. This time, when he sees a Borg, he shoots it. When he confronts the Borg Queen (Alice Krige), he breaks her spine.

Eiichiro Oda will only introduce a character with an eyepatch at the very end of One Piece, signaling the series' conclusion. The mystery of who will wear the eyepatch in the finale remains, with speculation on either Luffy or a new character. Eiichiro Oda's comments on eyepatches hint at a symbolic passing of the torch in the story's conclusion.
One Piece is set to end within the next few years, and there are still a lot of mysteries that need to be unraveled. Some involve plot points that havent been fully addressed over the years, but others have stemmed from Eiichiro Odas comments about the series that, in most cases, have never been elaborated on in the series or by Oda, himself.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom brings back Pieces of Heart, last seen in 2013's A Link Between Worlds. The return of Pieces of Heart suggests Zelda won't have an upgradable Stamina Wheel, unlike Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Echoes of Wisdom's large Hyrule offers ample space for collecting Pieces of Heart, with potential for nostalgic appeal and inventive puzzle solutions.
It seems that a classic franchise mechanic will be returning in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, having been absent from the franchise for the last decade. Of course, plenty of emphasis has been placed on the introduction of the Tri Rod and Echo mechanic, as well as on Princess Zelda being the protagonist. Nevertheless, while there are big changes coming in Echoes of Wisdom, the new features arent the only ones worthy of note in the title.

Plot: A deep dive into the Bruce Lee exploitation film craze that dominated grindhouse cinema after the iconic martial artist’s death.
Review: Flashback to the year 1994. On my 13th birthday, while cruising the video store for a movie to watch with my friends at my birthday sleepover, on a whim, I decided to rent Enter the Dragon. I was never the same. After watching it, I enrolled in Karate classes and tried to learn as much about Bruce Lee as possible. While cruising those same video store aisles, I was very confused by how many kung-fu movies had his name and image on the cover, given that, even back then, I knew there were only four Bruce Lee movies, plus Game of Death. And why were they constantly misspelling his name? Who was Bruce Le? Or Bruce Li? Or Bruce Liang?
This, of course, was my introduction to the...

To celebrate the release of 80s slasher classic Madn man on 4K Uhd from Arrow Video, here’s a list of the ten best slasher movies released between 1980 and 1988… showcasing the best of the genre’s golden age, offering a mix of iconic killers, inventive kills, and unforgettable scares!
1. Friday the 13th (1980)
One of the most iconic slasher films of all time, “Friday the 13th” introduced audiences to Camp Crystal Lake and the vengeful killer who lurks there. With its shocking twist ending, the film set the stage for a long-running franchise and established many of the genre’s classic tropes.
2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Wes Craven’s horror masterpiece introduced Freddy Krueger, a terrifying figure who haunts the dreams of teenagers. With its inventive concept and blend of surreal horror, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” stands out as one of the most creative and enduring slasher films of the decade.

The golden era of the slasher film was definitely in the 1980s, but there has been a recent insurgence with gore-fests like Terrifier and the X/Pearl movies. While some of the classic franchises like Halloween and Texas Chainsaw are still sputtering along, it's clear that fans want something new. The great thing is, numerous slashers are ready for slaughter, that could stand a reboot and provide a fresh approach for a new generation.
Remaking a classic is almost always a losing proposition, but taking a so-so movie with potential and giving it an update can be a stroke of genius. John Carpenter's The Thing is a prime example of fully fleshing out a great idea that was never properly realized in the original. There are scads of slashers and proto-slashers that had promise, but never quite delivered, all of which are begging for reboots that could potentially turn into bloody good franchises.

Ship of the Damned opens with a brief prologue set on board a pirate ship in 1622. As the ship sails through a storm, the crew prepare for dinner. Which for them means rather tamely hacking a bound woman to death and eating her raw flesh. In the present, Elena has her martial arts training interrupted by a phone call from her ex, Michael. He hasn’t taken the breakup well and keeps finding reasons to call her, but this time it’s legit, even if it doesn’t sound like it.
The Coast Guard have found what appears to be a seventeenth-century sailing ship drifting off the coast and towed it into port. Since she’s an expert in such things, he’d like her to come down and be part of the investigation.

Whiffing at Softballs
In an attempt to—let’s call it “humanize” himself, convicted felon Donald Trump sat down for an interview opposite the even-more sycophantic puff piece merchants of Fox & Friends‘ J.V. squad, Fox & Friends Weekend. In the wide-ranging conversation, Trump fielded lobs from the Fox News C-team on subjects ranging from religion, to which Democrat he’d have dinner with, to how his family is coping with the very public airing of daddy’s affair with a porn star while wife Melania was recovering from giving birth to the couple’s child.
Naturally, it was all very chummy and collegial, which didn’t prevent the unscripted Trump from showing off the toxic stew of narcissism, cognitive decline, and self-pity that is his mind.

When Bruce Lee died under mysterious circumstances in 1973 at age 32, the actor and martial artist left a hole in the action star firmament that seemed irreplaceable. That did not stop the Hong Kong film industry — and the rest of the world, for that matter — from trying anyway.
As Lee’s final (complete) film “Enter the Dragon,” released just six days after his death, became a worldwide box office phenomenon, “Bruceploitation” was born, enlisting look-alike performers to replace and imitate the trailblazing martial artist on screen. Decades after these copycat films deceived viewers — while still delivering some genuinely thrilling fight sequences — Severin Films is releasing “The Game of Clones: Bruceploitation Collection Vol. 1,” a compilation of 14 titles starring Bruce “impostors” like Ho Chung Tao, who went by the name Bruce Li, Ryong Keo (Dragon Lee), Chang Yi-tao (Bruce Lai) and Wong Kin-lung, who to this day goes by the name Bruce Le.

A small piece of contemporary cinema history was written last night in St Andrews, Scotland when Steven Soderbergh sat down with Joe and Anthony Russo on stage at the Sands International Film Festival to discuss their 2002 collaboration Welcome to Collinwood.
Produced by Soderbergh and George Clooney who also stars alongside William H. Macy, Isaiah Washington, Sam Rockwell, Luis Guzmán, and Patricia Clarkson, Welcome to Collinwood was the second feature from the Russos following their debut feature Pieces, which bombed out of Slamdance in 1997.
“There was zero interest in the film from anybody but this man over here,” Anthony said of Pieces, pointing towards Soderbergh. The sex, lies and videotape filmmaker had been present at the doomed Pieces screening at Slamdance and reached out to the directing duo to impart some wisdom.
“It was insanely ambitious and dense,” Soderbergh told Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr, who moderated the talk, of Pieces.

Steve Martin in “Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces,” now streaming on Apple TV+. The third installment of the Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews has set its slate, and that will include director Steven Soderbergh engaging in a conversation with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. I will moderate that discussion, which will touch on the preposterously unlikely way that Soderbergh discovered and godfathered the career of the duo that directed Hollywood’s all-time highest grossing film, Avengers: Endgame. The festival runs next month from April 19-21.

The Pitch: You Can’t Expect the Irish to Get Lucky Every Time
One of the biggest tragedies of modern cinema is the unavoidable fact that most movies make you wait at least ten minutes to hear a floating head loudly proclaim, “The penis is evil!” But 1974 was a different time and “Zardoz” is a different kind of movie, so it delivers that exact line before the five-minute mark even arrives. Believe it or not, that’s not even the first Wtf moment in this genitalia-obsessed fantasy epic.

Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for the One Piece manga and anime, specifically the Arabasta Arc
Expect more emotional depth in One Piece season 2 as the show delves into Ace's involvement and eventual tragic fate. Show creators are likely to expand Ace's storyline, making his death at the hands of Admiral Akainu even more heart-wrenching. With a focus on character development and relationships, One Piece season 2 promises plenty of shocking and poignant moments.
Netflix's One Piece has already demonstrated the ability to give minor characters far more depth and relatability, but the decision to take that approach holds sad implications for an upcoming character death. Judging by One Piece season 2's positive updates, it is only a matter of time before Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates resume their dangerous yet exciting quest to reach the Grand Line. To celebrate the release of The Comedy Man, on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital from 18th March, we are giving away Blu-Rays to 2 lucky winners!
Boasting a career-best performance from Kenneth More and skilfully directed by Alvin Rakoff, this often-forgotten example of the late British New Wave features an outstanding supporting cast including Cecil Parker, Dennis Price, Edmund Purdom and Billie Whitelaw.
The Comedy Man depicts the life of a struggling actor in Swinging London. Fired from his job in repertory theatre after seducing the producer’s wife, Chick Byrd (Kenneth More) moves to London. Juan Piquer Simón’s exploitation slasher Pieces (1982) has a bonkers reputation that precedes it, delivering one of horror’s most entertaining audience experiences of all time. The tagline, “It’s exactly what you think it is!” only scratches the surface of the weirdness within. Sure, you get exactly what you expect in terms of gore in this tale of a jigsaw puzzle-obsessed killer with a chainsaw, but the execution is so over the top there’s nothing that really prepares you for the unique brand of madness.
Simon was initially approached to helm a sequel to Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left, but passed because the script he was offered seemed too boring. Then he was offered a 30-page treatment for Pieces, then titled Jigsaw, intended at the time to be a made-for-tv movie. It was so insane that not only was he intrigued, he was determined to make the script believable.

Eli Roth is back. And he’s here for “Thanksgiving.”
For the past decade, Roth has nimbly moved through different genres – erotic thriller (“Knock Knock”), revenge movie (“Death Wish”), family fantasy (“The House with a Clock in Its Walls”), nature documentary (“Fin”) and big budget video game adaptation (next year’s “Borderlands”). But now he’s back with a down-and-dirty horror movie, this time centered around one of the happiest time of year.
In “Thanksgiving,” adapted from a fake trailer that Roth had made for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” project, a superstore’s super sale leads to tragedy. A year later a masked man in a pilgrim costume, known as John Carver, starts taking out the townspeople involved in the tragedy, one by one. And, yes, the kills are just as creative and stomach-churning as you’d expect from the man behind “Hostel,” “Cabin Fever” and “The Green Inferno.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s Exactly What You Think It Is…
Few moments in recent memory have brought me as much joy as the realization that my IndieWire After Dark partner Alison Foreman had never seen “Pieces.” She’s one of the few people I’ve met whose knowledge of slasher franchises dwarfs my own, so I figured the window to introduce her to the bloodiest chainsaw massacre in Boston history (and the shockingly incompetent investigation that followed it) had closed a long time ago. Once I learned that it hadn’t, I...
