The Monkey, the upcoming Stephen King adaptation from Longlegs writer-director Osgood Perkins, has already received some positive reviews from critics online, but now the Master of Horror himself has weighed in. Taking to his Threads account, King shared his opinion of the film, which was also positive.
He wrote, "You've never seen anything like The Monkey. It's batsh*t insane. As someone who has indulged in batsh*ttery from time to time, I say that with admiration." Quite the positive review indeed. King fans will no doubt delight in the author's glowing words, raising excitement for the film significantly.
King's opinions of his film adaptations run the gamut. He notoriously hates The Shining, Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film of King's third novel starring Jack Nicholoson and the late Shelley Duvall, but he likes the first Children of the Corn movie pretty well. No matter where he stands, King is guaranteed to be outspoken in his views.

Has there been a more unlikely series of horror films than the V/H/S franchise? By the very nature of the sub-genre, anthology films don’t typically lend themselves to being series as even the segments within their own movies are almost always unrelated. Sure, TV has found a way to make it work in things like American Horror Story from Ryan Murphy or the criminally underrated Channel Zero that ran 4 seasons. Side note, if you have Shudder, please go check out Channel Zero. There are exceptions of course with The ABCs of Death or the Creepshow series but most of them are one and done. You also have nonrelated ones that use the same actors and directors like the wonderful things Amicus films was doing opposite Hammer in the 60s and 70s but again, these weren’t sequels at all. V/H/S has defied all odds and with a new film having just been released,...

Creepshow premiered in 1982, chilling horror fans with five tales written by Stephen King and directed by George A. Romero. The anthology marked King's screenwriting debut and spawned a legacy that still lives on. A loving and witty homage to pulp horror comics from King's childhood, before the Comics Code Authority, Creepshow features campy stories of ghosts, ghouls, and the dark side of humanity all of them told with distinctive hints of black humor.
Romero's adaptations bring a fresh horror perspective while enhancing King's distinct voice. Direct adaptations of vivid imagery and internal dialogue spoken aloud contribute to the comic book aesthetic, and moments of intense violence, gore, and depravity recall why those pre-code comics were banned. The chapters, excluding the prologue and epilogue, are as follows:
1.
"Father's Day"
A family is plagued by their abusive zombie uncle.
2.

George A. Romero and Stephen King: a match made in horror movie heaven. It was probably inevitable that Stephen King would break into the movies, and the master of horror finally had his first screenplay produced in the form of Romero's "Creepshow," one of the best horror anthology movies ever made. King had penned scripts before (for instance: he wrote a draft of the screenplay for "The Shining" that Stanley Kubrick rejected), but "Creepshow" was the first original King script to make it to the screen. King and Romero originally met when Romero was being courted to direct the TV adaptation of King's vampire novel "Salem's Lot," and while Romero ultimately didn't direct the miniseries (those duties ultimately fell to "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" filmmaker Tobe Hooper), he and King became friends. Eventually, the two decided to make a movie together, with King penning the script and Romero directing.

The late, great George A. Romero is a legend. Romero started his career making short industrial films, but it was his 1968 breakthrough "Night of the Living Dead" that would ensure his legacy. Romeo continued to work steadily until his death in 2017, a true outsider always trying to maintain his own singular vision, bucking against the studio system. While Romero primarily worked in horror, he also stepped outside of the genre with 1981's "Knightriders." This underseen feature is about a traveling renaissance fair troupe who perform jousts while riding motorcycles instead of horses. It's kind of wild.
"Knightriders" stars Ed Harris as the king of the trope, and Harris had fond memories of the flick. "It was a very special time," the actor told Indiewire. "George was a beautiful, proud, creative, big bear of a guy. He was gregarious, he loved to drink and smoke. We had a helluva good time.

We all love a "fun" horror movie, right? I'm talking about horror that feels like the cinematic equivalent of a roller coaster — fast, exhilarating, scary, but ultimately harmless. You buy the ticket and take the ride. But one of the things I love about the horror genre is that it's so damn flexible. On one hand, you can have fun horror movies like I just mentioned. And then there's the complete opposite: horror movies that make you squirm. Horror movies designed to make your skin crawl. Bugs, monsters, blood, body horror — the type of stuff that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it. Those are the types of horror movies we're highlighting here — gnarly stuff, gross stuff, stuff that's going to make you feel more than a little icky. Be warned: it's about to get disgusting up in here.

Stephen King's role as Jordy Verill in Creepshow gets a gross adaptation in new art. The segment "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill" is based on King's short story "Weeds" from 1976. King's cameo in Creepshow allowed for extended screen time, adding dark humor to the iconic segment.

A meeting of two great masters of horror, Creepshow blends George A. Romero’s macabre brand of satire with Stephen King’s darkly moral vision of the world. The anthology film doesn’t blossom out from the nihilism that marks Romero and King’s more famous works, but from audience-friendly parody and their shared love of the infamous publisher EC Comics, one of the earliest targets and casualties of the Comics Code Authority. Comic-book aesthetics dominate the film, from vivid splashes of color to animated effects like frames divided into panels and page-flip transitions between segments. With Creepshow, Romero and King stepped far enough outside their creative comfort zones to find fruitful common ground in the film’s five stories, and without one artist’s personality outweighing the other’s.
Creepshow’s five stories are linked by a through line of sardonic moralism, a sense of reckoning redolent of Flannery O’Connor’s anti-fables.

Some of the best Stephen King movie and TV adaptations have been lost amidst the long list of books that have made to the big and small screens, but they’re well worth revisiting. Stephen King’s prolific catalog of gripping novels and short stories has seen the author accumulate over 300 screen adaptation credits. Many have become icons of the horror genre.
However, not all King adaptations and shows see the same level of recognition. In fact, some of the plots are simply too absurd to be accepted by mainstream moviegoing audiences. In other cases, King’s stories, which often rely heavily on inner monologue for characterization, fail to translate to visual mediums such as film and TV. Even so, such projects often have their bright spots regardless. It’s even possible for a King story to work perfectly as a TV show or movie but, due to timing or other factors,...

Stephen King is among history’s most frequently adapted writers, up there with Charles Dickens, the Brothers Grimm, and William Shakespeare for inspiring the most successful page-to-picture creations. From Rob Reiner and David Cronenberg to Mike Flanagan and Andy Muschietti, genre filmmakers have clamored to take on King’s words for decades.
There’s no shortage of material to go around, of course. Horror’s reigning titan of literary terror has written more than 60 books and 200 short stories: many of them rooted in King’s signature strangeness and the believable humanity that turned 2017’s “It” into a global sensation. King has teamed up with his son Joe Hill to produce even more cinematic fodder in recent years. The pair’s “In the Tall Grass” novella became a Netflix movie in 2019, and Hill enjoyed his own success with Scott Derrickson’s 2022 “The Black Phone” adaptation.

Although far from the first horror anthology, Creepshow quickly established itself as the quintessential one. After several stalled attempts to work together, George A. Romero and Stephen King — two undisputed masters in their respective fields, each in their prime — finally collaborated in 1982. With both creators having grown up on EC horror comics of the 1950s like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, it made sense that an homage to those works would bring the two titans of terror together.
Creepshow packs five tales (three originals and two adapted from existing King short stories) plus a wraparound that bookends the film in two hours flat. The Halloween-set framing story finds a disparaging father lambasting his son for reading horror comics before throwing away the latest issue of Creepshow. Beckoned by the silent host known as The Creep, the tales within the discarded comic serve as the anthology’s segments.

1982's Creepshow was one of its kind when it was released as a horror anthology that had everything from killers to monsters. It also allowed famous horror icons to give their creative input, such as its director George A. Romero and writer Stephen King. But while each story covered a wide spectrum of horror, its writer, King, still managed to bring in one tale that tied into his storied universe. Based on King's short story Weeds, "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill" starred King in a tale about a man who encountered a meteorite that crashed in his yard.
After he touched the rock, his skin began to sprout alien weeds over himself and anything he touched. At first, it seemed harmless enough until it began to grow uncontrollably, becoming itchy and aggressive. In the end, after the growths had turned Jordy into something of a moss monster, he chose...

Chatting with /Film's Max Evry over a recently released special edition Blu-ray of the 2015 documentary "Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini," the conversation turned, naturally, to horror and one of Savini's most well-known makeup fx contributions, George Romero's 1982 horror anthology "Creepshow." The classic October viewing staple hits its 40th anniversary this year and while many anthologies have followed in the EC Comics-inspired footsteps since, few have the lasting power of the Stephen King-penned original.
Filled with Tom Savini-engineered special effects for each of its five segments, "Creepshow" thrilled audiences with headless matriarchs, a creature-in-a-crate, a moss man, waterlogged ghouls, and cockroach kills. The fans love it, but Savini credits his longtime friend and the film's director George A. Romero for its legendary status. Savini tells Evry:

The 1980s were in many ways peak Stephen King when it came to screen adaptations. For one thing, the man himself was at the height of his popularity. He has of course remained one of the world’s best-selling authors for decades, but his initial string of books that started in the mid-1970s and extended well into the ‘80s—which included classics like Carrie, ‘Salem’s Lot, The Shining, The Stand, and Different Seasons, just to name a handful—made him into a genuine publishing phenomenon like no other.
At the same time, the success of Brian De Palma’s 1976 big screen adaptation of Carrie, followed by the 1979 CBS-TV miniseries based on ‘Salem’s Lot, helped open the floodgates for a massive influx of screen adaptations of his work. That wave was launched with Stanley Kubrick’s prestigious and controversial take on The Shining, although the films that followed in...

Spiders terrify Greg Nicotero and that fear has translated into making the visual effects artist and showrunner one of the most prominent names in the horror genre. He got his start with George Romero on “Day of the Dead,” and Nicotero feels his spirit around him all the time, including on Nicotero’s Shudder anthology series, “Creepshow.”
“I’ve always been a big fan of the genre; I’ve always loved being scared and scaring people,” Nicotero said during the series’ Thursday panel at the Ctam Winter 2021 Press Tour. To be the showrunner on a show he can design, develop, direct, is a dream come true for him.
But one question early on in Season 2 was how the series would navigate an episode starring rocker Marilyn Manson, who was recently accused of sexual assault and domestic violence by several women. Nicotero found out about the Manson allegations at the same...

Stephen King is a name you associate far more with writing than acting, but in spite of this, he’s racked up over two dozen credits in front of the camera, mostly cameos in adaptations of his own work. Despite the horror themes of many of these appearances, though, he’s only been seen to die once, in George A. Romero’s 1982 anthology Creepshow.
King appears in The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, one of the film’s stronger segments, which sees the eponymous dim-witted farmer discover a meteorite on his land and envisions selling it to pay off his bank loan. However, a series of mishaps and Jordy’s own gormlessness result in the alien plant life within the rock escaping and enveloping both the farm and Jordy himself, whereupon, in a departure from the humor of the rest of the tale, he blows his head off with a...

Almost since he became a best-selling author, Stephen King has seen his work adapted for the movies and television.
Just two years after his first novel, 1974’s Carrie, was published, a film version directed by Brian De Palma was a massive hit, earning Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. The floodgates opened after that, with a TV miniseries based on his second novel, ‘Salem’s Lot (1979), Stanley Kubrick’s high-profile film of The Shining (1980), Creepshow (1982), Cujo (1983), The Dead Zone (1983), Christine (1983), Children of the Corn (1984), Firestarter (1984), Silver Bullet (1985), and many more coming quickly during the next few years.
King adaptations continued well into the late 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, although the quality began to trail off and many were either quickie cash-ins, direct-to-video clunkers or both. There were high points, of course: Pet Sematary (1989), Misery (1990), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), the TV miniseries of The Stand (1994), Dolores Claiborne (1995), 1408 (2007), and The Mist (2007) are all standouts.

Halloween is right around the corner, which is a treat for horror fans. With Halloween comes lots and lots of scary movies. One of my favorite horror movies from the 80s regularly plays around this time of year is the movie Creepshow. The film was directed by George A. Romero, the legendary director who brought zombies to the mainstream with Night of the Living Dead’s release. Creepshow came out in 1982 and has since become a cult classic. Stephen King wrote the film and also starred in one of the five stories featured in the movie. King overacts in the segment and steals the show ” The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill.” The story follows a not so smart man named Jody Verrill, who watches a meteorite crash land on his farm. Jody touches the fallen meteorite to bring it to the local university to get some money to pay off his bank loan.

The 37 years between the release of Creepshow in 1982 and the debut of Shudder’s Creepshow TV series weren’t exactly kind to the franchise. 1987’s Creepshow 2 just couldn’t quite replicate the magic of its predecessor (despite its best intentions) and 2006’s Creepshow 3 was bad enough to raise the question: “What was it that made the original Creepshow so special?” What was that magical quality the 1982 classic found that’s proven to be so difficult to replicate? When you get down to it, what even defines a Creepshow story?
“Well, they have to be fun,” says Greg Nicotero, special effects legend, co-executive producer of The Walking Dead, and showrunner of Shudder’s Creepshow series. “My criteria is, when the episode is over, I want the viewer to be like, ‘Oh my God, that was so much fun. I didn’t expect that. I didn’t see it coming, but I had a great time.

Everyone who loves horror movies also loves Halloween, right? I mean, aside from the creepy and spooky decor that appears on store shelves across the globe, and all the fun candy that is suddenly available in the shape of brains or eyeballs or the withered hand of a zombie, there’s also the wonderful sales on horror movies, or the various stuff that starts popping up on streaming services and television. The horror that we love all year is suddenly way easier to find, way more accepted, and much more prominent. It’s fair to say, also, that the 1980s are one of the finest and greatest times for the genre, a time where countless horror classics were released, where franchises hit their pinnacles, where icons of horror were born. It’s a fantastic decade, and so I thought it might be fun, this year, to take a look at...

In April, as everyone was just getting used to conducting affairs through Zoom calls, director Rob Savage had an idea: Set up an elaborate video-conference prank in which he explores the source of creepy footsteps coming from his attic, ending in a horrifying jump scare for his friends. The two-minute video, now viewed over 220,000 times on Twitter, immediately sparked the interest of executives at horror streaming service Shudder.
“We said, ‘Let’s talk right away.’ What sold us was ‘Zoom seance,'” Shudder general manger Craig Engler recalled of the timely concept. “It was 12 weeks from the time we were pitched the movie to the time it ended up on Shudder.”
The 57-minute film based on Savage’s video, “Host,” released in July, exemplifies why AMC Networks’ Shudder has been able to find success in such a crowded streaming landscape. The service, which launched in 2015, crossed 1 million subscribers in September thanks to its nimbleness,...

Most people know Billie Piper from her turn as Rose Tyler, the first companion of Doctor Who‘s modern era. Since she left the iconic science fiction show, however, Piper has been steadily carving out a niche for herself in well-written, often subversive TV drama as an actress who isn’t afraid to take chances with her performance or on a controversial role. Her latest turn, as hot mess celebrity Suzie in I Hate Suzie, is yet another example of Piper’s willingness to take on new and challenging roles. Piper blew us away with her performance as Rose in Who. Since then, she’s just continued to get better and better.

Within a society driven by technological dependency, “Survival Family” looks at how the familiar family structure would be disrupted when faced with a complete blackout. Backed by this premise, a family of four is forced to venture out in search of necessities as there seems to be no end or insight into the dire situation. Anthony Scott Burns, known for Father's Day (pictured above), his profoundly creepy contribution to the anthology film Holidays, as well as short films like Manifold, will soon see his upcoming sci-fi thriller Come True gain a wider audience.
