No streaming service does a director retrospective like the Criterion Channel, and March offers two masters at opposite ends of exposure. On one side is Michael Mann, whose work from Thief through Collateral (minus The Keep) is given a spotlight; on the other is Alain Guiraudie, who (in advance of Misericordia opening on March 21) has five films arriving. (2001’s duet of That Old Dream That Moves and Sunshine for the Scoundrels have perhaps never streamed in the U.S. before.) Meanwhile, three noirs from Douglas Sirk are programmed alongside a Lee Chang-dong retrospective that features three new restorations.
Showcases will be staged for Dogme 95, Best Supporting Actor winners, and French Poetic Relaism. Welles’ The Trial gets a Criterion Edition alongside Demon Pond; Horace Ové’s newly restored Pressure makes a streaming premiere alongside spruced-up copies of Amadeus, Love Is the Devil, Port of Shadows, and Burning an Illusion, as...

The previously announced Paramount+ hair metal docuseries Nöthin’ But a Good Time has been slated for a September 17th premiere on the steaming platform. The trailer has also been unveiled and can be seen below.
Nöthin’ But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the ‘80s Hair Metal is based on the similarly titled book/oral history by journalists Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock.

There is also footage that originally appeared in the Penelope Spheeris’ documentary The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years, such as the infamous pool scene with W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes.
Directed by Jeff Tremaine, the three-part series explores the over-the-top world of ’80s hard rock and glam metal with interviews from Poison’s Bret Michaels, Ratt’s Stephen Pearcy,...

With a total gross of just under $7 million Trick or Treat is the kind of movie many directors today are trying to capture. They don't want to mimic this film. Nor do they want to copy it. They just want their films to have an 80s vibe. That coolness that the films of nearly 40 years ago seem to effortlessly have. The 1980s have come back in a very big way. So big in fact that the times we are living in almost feel like that time. And while there were obviously bigger horror films around this time, not to mention films by people like John Hughes, as far as 80s rock movies go, the vibe doesn't get any cooler than Trick or Trick.

News of Todd Haynes making his first documentary should’ve come as something of a curveball, but it was reported that the “Carol” director is planning a non-fiction project about the Velvet Underground, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world. Haynes’ “Velvet Goldmine” is such a knowing, textured, and vividly remembered reflection on the glam rock era that it can be easy to forget that its story merely alludes to the likes of Lou Reed.
But the fascination the Velvet Underground holds for Haynes isn’t the only thing that makes this newly announced documentary feel like such a perfect pairing between subject and storyteller. With the landmark “The Velvet Underground & Nico” LP, Reed and his cohorts effectively forged a new language for countercultural expression, synthesizing the subversive pop stylings of Andy Warhol into a rock movement that had already been neutered of its rebellious beginnings. With films like “Poison” and “Safe,...

'Play Misty for Me': Rabid fan Jessica Walter makes life difficult for disc jockey Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood, 'Harry Potter' and 'The Decline of Western Civilization': Packard Campus movies Movies set in the world of music and/or radio are among the April 2016 highlights at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater in Culpeper, Virginia. Packard Campus Recorded Sound Curator Matt Barton selected the documentaries and narrative features in this particular program, which, according to the Theater's press release, includes “several rarely projected films in original release prints from the Library's holdings.” Radio/music titles include: Clint Eastwood's 1971 feature film directorial debut, the thriller Play Misty for Me, starring Jessica Walter as a woman obsessed with both a late night disc jockey (Eastwood) and the song “Misty,” jazzily played by Errol Garner at the piano. Also in the cast: Donna Mills, frequent Eastwood director Don Siegel (Dirty Harry,...

On slate this month for screening events at AMPAS – A trilogy of documentaries tailor-made for fans of the L.A. music scene in the early 80’s and two of the most fascinating characters to come out of the “Kennedy’s Camelot” era in American History.
Penelope Spheeris’ Decline Of Western Civilization films (I, II, and III) are a great walk down memory lane for music fans that came of age during the early 80’s in Los Angeles. 1 and 3 cover the early days of punk rock and 2, “the metal years” is an eye-opening look into the hair-bands that were struggling to make it on the famed Sunset Strip.
Grey Gardens, you just have to see to believe. Funny, sad, hilarious and sometimes shocking, this classic Maysles Brothers film documents a branch of the Kennedy family tree most people don’t know even existed.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

With "Rock of Ages" thundering through theaters on Friday, the retro spotlight will once again shine on the crazy '80s, the decade of decadence when rock stars were true rock stars and unapologetic about being so.
In anticipation of the nostalgia this will inspire, we're looking at nine hard-rock and heavy-metal films that have made noise in the mainstream. Horns up!
9. 'Detroit Rock City' (1999)
While a majority of teen flicks tend to focus on love, partying and sex, 'Detroit Rock City' has a singular directive -- getting four teenage Kiss fanatics to a concert after one of their mothers burns their tickets and banishes her son to Catholic school. Naturally that's not going to stop them, and once reunited, the four garage bandmates (including Edward Furlong) go on a wild road trip that involves drugs, fights, a botched mugging and robbery, a strip club contest and other ridiculous situations.

I have visited dozens of movie sets over the past four and a half years - fantasies, action-thrillers, comedies, and dramas - but I've never stepped foot on the set of a musical until last August, when I found myself immersed in glam rock awesomeness on the Miami set of Rock of Ages. As I mentioned in my set visit preview a few weeks ago, director Adam Shankman and his crew transformed a few blocks of Miami into a fantastic, 1987 version of Hollywood's Sunset Strip for this adaptation of Chris D'Arienzo's Broadway stage play.
When I first arrived, we not only saw iconic Strip locales such as the Rainbow Room, Guitar Center, and Tower Records, but there were also a slew of 80s cars driving to the set. Among them were a Pontiac Fiero, Volkswagon Cabriolet, Chevy Monte Carlo, Datsun 280Z, Chevy Chevette and even a Dodge Reliant K (a.

Good news! Charlie Kaufman-esque rich, archly funny meta-comedy He Loves Me has begun filming in Los Angeles. Bona Fide Productions and Fox Searchlight Pictures officially announced a slew of A-listed thesps to star in the new dramatic comedy opposite leads Paul Dano and Zoey Kazan – Antonio Banderas, Steve Coogan, Elliot Gould, Chris Messina, Deborah Ann Woll and previously attached Annette Bening. In addition, The Daily Show veteran Aasif Mandvi is in talks to join the cast as well.
Helmed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), the film follows a writer (Paul Dano) who, in an attempt to overcome writer’s block, scribes a female character he thinks will love him. As the story goes, Dano actually births the character into existence. His real life girlfriend, Zoe Kazan, will embody the character brought to life. Kazan also penned the script.
Let’s start with the end – Mandvi will play Calvin’s agent,...

The world has come down with a serious case of Bieber Fever… and with Justin Bieber: Never Say Never out in theaters tomorrow, we figured that this would be the perfect time to talk about some of our favorite Music/Band documentaries. There are so many that a couple have certainly been left out… but that just gives you something to discuss at the end!

Of all the rock albums coming out in 2010 that can be considered hotly anticipated, the new record from the recently-reunited Blink-182 might be tops on the list. When it finally drops, hardcore fans will be able to experience the making of their new masterpiece first hand, as the band announced they are going to capture the recording experience first-hand as part of a making-of doc they're calling "The Blinkumentary."
While there have been plenty of documentaries that have tracked tours or specific shows, there have only been a handful of films that have really broken into the creation of great albums. But the ones that do exist are particularly amazing. If "The Blinkumentary" reveals the sorts of things that the following flicks do, then we're in for a classic.

It's New Year's Eve, which means that there are only hours left in 2009. No matter what you're doing today, be sure to take time to reflect on everything you accomplished in the past 12 months and everything you hope to get done in the coming year. Sure, getting together with your friends, popping champagne and kissing somebody special at midnight is important (and fun!), but don't forget reflection. It's good for you!
If you're anything like us, you'll be spending New Year's Day watching "The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years," one of the best rock docs ever made. (It's a crime that it's not available on DVD, though for some reason IFC airs it every single January 1, probably because watching the frontman for W.A.S.P. literally drown himself in vodka will make most people feel better about their own hangovers.) We'll be back Monday, January 4 with more news,...

The stars of Wayne’s World, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, are on their knees, their arms outstretched, bowing endlessly in ritual self-abasement. No, it is not an act of contrition for making a movie whose wittiest line is “If she were president, she’d be Babe-raham Lincoln” and whose second wittiest line is a suggestion to call a Chinese restaurant and order “cream of some young guy.” Myers and Carvey are filming a scene in which the movie’s heroes, Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, prostrate themselves before their idol Alice Cooper.
