Cph:dox has crowned winners at the latest edition of the renowned nonfiction film festival in Copenhagen.
The Dox:Award, the festival’s top prize, went to Always, the directorial debut of Deming Chen. The film tells the story of a young poet, 8-year-old Youbin, who lives “deep in the lush mountains of Hunan province” in southern China.
“There’s a huge difference between nothing and small things. But life is in fact made up of many, often unnoticed, small things. We need the sensibilities of artists to show us the greatness of the little things,” noted the Dox:Award jury comprised of Rikke Tambo Andersen, Max Kestner, Nicolas Rapold, Adele Tulli and Raul Niño Zambrano. “This exquisitely shot chronicle of a rural farming family is alive with compassion and poetry.”
The ‘Always’ filmmaking team celebrates their Dox:Award win at Cph:dox

Gorgeously rendered in picturesque cinematography, “Always” offers a meditative and patient look into the life of an adolescent poet in rural China. But the poetry is not limited to the protagonist’s words, which appear as intertitles throughout the film; it is also there in the images captured of him, his family, classmates and his small village and its people. This is a confident and striking debut for filmmaker Deming Chen that should establish him as a new and vital voice in the documentary genre.
The film opens in color, then turns to black and white as if going back to a more innocent time. Later in the film, the color returns, desaturated and faint though beautiful, marking the passage of time. Chen, who acts as his own cinematographer, followed his protagonist Gong Youbin from the age of 9 to 13. In this slice-of-life portrait, Chen shows how childhood experiences can shape someone,...

Cph:dox, the documentary film festival based out of Copenhagen in Denmark, has revealed the jury winners for its 2025 edition. Audience Award prizes will be announced in April.
More than 90 feature films screened in Copenhagen this past week, including the European premiere of Sundance favorites like “The Perfect Neighbor,” directed by Geeta Gandbhir, whose bodycam-based documentary about a wrongful killing in Florida in 2023 is positioned as one of Netflix’s forthcoming top awards contenders this year. Also bowing in Copenhagen were Amy Berg’s music doc “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley,” Amber Fares’ portrait of Israeli comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi with “Coexistence, My Ass!” David Osit’s “Predators,” about the rise and fall of NBC’s controversial documentary TV series “To Catch a Predator,” also bowed at Cph:dox and will be released by MTV later this year.

In the early days of Dragon Ball, Goku’s strength came from rigorous training and mastering new techniques. There was a lot of uncertainty, which made the adventures crucial.
The fans had to beware and grasp every detail because there was no telling what lay beyond. Goku was trained to be a warrior. The fights in the original Dragon Ball were all about skill, adaptability, and creative problem-solving.

However, since unlocking Super Saiyan on Namek, the entire direction of the story seems to have changed. It could be a marketable and profitable decision, as the fans eagerly await the unveiling of newer transformations, and the forms have become a sign of progress in the story.
Dragon Ball is becoming all about Goku unlocking the next transformation
For a combat anime, Dragon Ball has a unique growth pattern compared to the other series.

Former editors of the Dragon Ball manga have argued over the creative drive of the late Akira Toriyama following his completion of Dragon Ball Z -- or, to be more accurate, the lack of passion Toriyama showed after finishing the series.
Kazuhiko Torishima, Yu Kondo and Fuyuto Takeda were Toriyama’s editors on the Dragon Ball series for 11 years for Weekly Shonen Jump. The trio discussed their work history on the latest episode of KosoKoso, a Japanese podcast that Torishima hosts with Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, who worked with Toriyama on the popular role-playing franchise by Square Enix, as well as Chrono Trigger for the Super Nintendo. The editors discussed Toriyama’s life after Dragon Ball and why they believed he didn’t work on anything new soon after.

The first installment of the Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover event may have brought us a semi-literate Charlie Kelly, a piss-soaked Frank Reynolds and a one-legged love triangle between Janine Teagues, Gregory Eddie and a delusional Dee Reynolds, but the worst is still yet to come, according to William Stanford Davis.
Davis, who plays custodian Mr. Johnson on the beloved ABC sitcom, recently teased what fans can expect on the Sunny side of the series’ collaboration, revealing that the FX(X) take on the crossover is a whole lot less family-friendly than January’s “Volunteers.”
“You got saints and sinners everywhere,” Davis explained during a recent sitdown with Collider.
Taking care to note that “Abbott is the saint part of it,” Davis remained largely tight-lipped on the specifics of the episode. “I’d get in trouble,” he joked.

The first episode of Dragon Ball Daima revealed where the series is set in Dragon Ball'stimeline. Set almost immediately after Dragon Ball Z's Buu Saga, the Z-Warriors begin the anime with the same power levels they had at the end of that arc. This changes after Gomah makes his wish on the Dragon Balls, and turns them all into children.
Goku and the other Z-Warriors have been weakened after being turned into kids in Dragon Ball Daima. These child versions of the characters are still powerful fighters, but most would be incapable of replicating the same feats they could as adults. Because of where their abilities come from, however, some members of the Dragon Team are less hindered than others, making them stronger than characters who are normally far more powerful than them.

On March 1st and 2nd, Dragon Ball Z- Battle of Gods (Extended Cut) was rereleased in the UK (by Piece of Magic Entertainment) alongside countries in the European Union and the Baltics.
While I was very enthusiastic to rewatch this movie on the Big Screen, it’s safe to say that I was left with mixed feelings at the end.
The movie while entertaining had not aged well unlike the older ones. Most of the effects in Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods feel either sloppy or outdated compared to how far they’ve been worked over in the Super Hero Movie and the Daima anime.
Tadayoshi Yamamuro, the lead Animation Director, kept a consistent style throughout the entire movie and his experience brought out a lot of the charm we all love about Dragonball.

In the magical, naturally zesty Agatha’s Almanac, Amalie Atkins delivers one of the year’s most indelible portraits. We are made privy to a life operated far and away from the hubbub of urbanity, compulsions of modernity. It’s not so much of a mantra of isolation as it is to wrest existence away from the inexorable demands, the crushing loop capitalism can set off. Atkins offers an adoring snapshot of her aunt, who may be in her twilight but is as sharp, savvy, open to life and everything around her as ever.
She keeps to her farm, growing all sorts of plants. They are her sustenance. We follow Agatha over a few years, from her late eighties till she celebrates her ninetieth birthday. She is as sturdy, dogged in her staunchly independent habits as ever. She totters around, always busy. Agatha says people ask her if she’s...

There was never a point after the blockbuster triumph of "Jaws" when it could be said Steven Spielberg needed a hit, but in 1992, coming off a string of critical and commercial disappointments in "Empire of the Sun," "Always," and "Hook," his future as a filmmaker did look a bit cloudy. His last two certified box office smashes at this point were "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," and while both were the work of an energized director, he clearly had loftier ambitions. And when the critics failed to realize he'd made a stone-cold masterpiece in "Empire of the Sun," he had cause to wonder if they were going to irrationally hold his unprecedented rush of success against him forever.
We know how this played out. Spielberg eventually reinvented the blockbuster with "Jurassic Park," and finally, in the eyes of critics, proved himself...

In Deming Chen’s debut Always, poetry seeps through serene, spectacular images and verbal pockets. There are the sprawling landscapes of the mountainous village in Yunan that immediately transport; within it unfolds the intimate tale of the eight-year-old Youbin. Smoke rising from a pot, the still, expansive wides of the landscape-Chen’s frames, mostly in monochrome, are hypnotic, arresting the languorous pull of memory.
Every natural element comes richly alive-drifting leaves, the flock of birds racing into the distance, canopies that feel like they encompass the whole world. Chen lets us slip into this world with smoothness and fluency. Our familiarization with the family, the way of life in the depths of this mountainous province, transpires in a restful, unforced manner. We ramble with the villagers grazing their livestock, and rearing pigs. Always sweeps out luxuriously, the gaze always empathetic, open, and abloom with mellow curiosity.

It's quite common for big, popular anime to get some sort of special release for notable anniversaries. "Digimon" did a series of films for its 15th anniversary and then another film for its 20th, and "Naruto" released special episodes for its 20th anniversary. So when it came time to celebrate 40 years of "Dragon Ball," arguably the single most influential and iconic manga and anime of the modern era, Toei Animation went all out.
Right before his tragic passing, "Dragon Ball" creator Akira Toriyama decided to collaborate with Toei on a new "Dragon Ball" anime to be released in time for the franchise's 40th anniversary. Reportedly, Toriyama ended up being much more involved in this show than he'd been with the anime for years, working out the story and the designs of what would become "Dragon Ball Daima," the single best thing the franchise has done in decades.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Daima, the franchise’s most recent anime, is a fascinating change of pace that nostalgically riffs on old ideas, but also presents stark, original concepts that pull from the fantasy and isekai genres. At only 20 episodes, Dragon Ball Daima accomplishes an incredible amount in a short span of time.
That being said, it’s an anime not afraid to take its time, so pace is periodically an issue in Dragon Ball Daima. There’s certainly a satisfying sense of closure by the time that Dragon Ball Daima ends, but there are understandable feelings of regret and disappointment that stem from all of Dragon Ball Daima’s missed opportunities and unresolved storylines. A few simple changes could have appeased many fans.

Future Trunks is undoubtedly one of the most beloved Saiyans in Dragon Ball, yet Dragon Ball Super sidelined him after the Goku Black arc. This might have happened to focus on the protagonist and not mess up the power hierarchy.

The story had to choose one character who would be at the forefront of all battles, and it could only be Goku. If the next generation had to become powerful, even if they were stronger than Goku, the narrative would find a way to push them aside (talking about Gohan with his Ultimate Gohan and Gohan Black).

Over the years, Dragon Ball has taken many characters from non-canon material and given them official status in the main story. The fans have been pining for some characters who are in the non-canon parts of the franchise, including the movies and games.

Many instances of adapting non-canon characters have been seen, from Broly in Dragon Ball Super: Broly to Gogeta’s full recognition in the same film. Not just that Dragon Ball Daima has made the SSJ4 form canon, and it resembles the one seen in Dragon Ball Gt (which was not canon).
Now, after showcasing Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball Daima, Dragon Ball Super needs to up the ante and give us a new character to scale up the power levels. For this, Android 21 stands as one of the strongest contenders and will revolutionize the franchise if canonized.

Ever since Super Saiyan 4 Goku made his explosive debut in Dragon Ball Daima, fans have wondered one thing: "Why no black hair?" Unfortunately, a possible explanation for SSJ4 Goku’s debatable hair colors has been debunked by one of the show’s producers.

For years, Dragon Ball has established a clear hierarchy of power. Though the focus of the story is still on the protagonists (the Z fighters), there is no doubt that the Angels are at the top of the power system, just under the Grand Priest and Zeno, who is the strongest and most ridiculous overpowered entity in the franchise.

Although the Angels are at the top, they need a cosmic counterpart that can rival them and make them use their power completely, unlike the sealed state that they are always in.
The only available opposite were the Gods of Destruction, but they are far weaker, and the comparison only comes to light because of the Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego coming from them, respectively. While Akira Toriyama never let pesky things like continuity get in the way of a good story, Dragon Balland Dragon Ball Z put more effort into respecting canon than most fans give them credit for. It wasn’t until modern Dragon Ball when contradictions started becoming truly prevalent, with Dragon Ball Super infamously bringing the End of Z’s canonicity into question. Dragon Ball Daima, in particular, has only muddied the canon playing field further, with the introduction of Super Saiyan 4 Goku turning Battle of Gods into a walking plot hole. But maybe this is looking at things the wrong way, placing too much reverence on the original source material without recognizing what modern Dragon Ball actually is: a decades-long franchise written and worked on by dozens of creatives, not just Akira Toriyama.
This is simply how continuity works in a long-running series that's been worked on by multiple different people.

Dragon Ball Daima’s epic final battle between Demon King Gomah and Super Saiyan 4 Goku is one fans will never forget. The finale was a fitting farewell from Akira Toriyama as the last confirmed piece of Dragon Ball media he directly worked on before his death. Viewed on its own merits as a stand-alone story, Dragon Ball Daima’s series finale provided a fun and satisfactory ending to the story it set out to tell from Episode 1. As part of the larger Dragon Ball franchise, though, the anime makes zero sense.

Dragon Ball has a legacy that spans multiple decades, encompassing entire generations. This is all thanks to the genius of Akira Toriyama, who spun wild, fantastical tales that captivated millions across the world.

Toriyama’s final gift to the fans was the Dragon Ball Daima installment, and it is rife with the Toriyama brand, the gags and the manner of engagement make it clear. The fans were extremely hyped when they saw the reveal of the Super Saiyan 4 form of Goku, even more so when it was declared to be canon.
But now, the director, Aya Komaki, has stated that the form was not a true Super Saiyan 4 form and was induced by Neva rather than being something unlocked. What does this mean for the legacy of Toriyama?

One of the most exciting moments in Dragon Ball Daima was Goku’s transformation into Super Saiyan 4. Dragon Ball Gt gave the fans a taste of the massive amount of power that this form holds. After many years of waiting and no mention of this form in any major Dragon Ball series (since Gt is not canon), its return was met with massive hype and appreciation.

Fans believed this was the moment Daima solidified Super Saiyan 4 as part of the official canon. There were definitely many who were asking why it wasn’t seen in the later part of the timeline, like in Super.
But to counter all this, Aya Komaki (the director) gave an explanation of the scene that further muddies fans’ understanding of what is canon and what is not when it comes to Daima.

Dragon Ball Daima was a final gift to the fans from the legend, Akira Toriyama himself. Daima succeeded in bringing back beloved aspects of Dragon Ball Gt and making them canon, but does that mean it has to be connected to Dragon Ball Super?

The biggest question surrounding Daima is its connection to the main timeline, especially with how it introduces the Super Saiyan 4 transformation. Not just that, SSJ3 Vegeta is also something that we have seen for the first time in Daima (although he has the Ultra Ego form now).
Even more so, the influence of Demon Realm, the Namekians, Majin Kuu, Arinsu, and even the fusion medi bugs is nowhere to be seen in Super-chronologically, it doesn’t make sense!
Why Daima should remain a standalone story
Trying to force Daima into the canon just to justify the SSJ4 transformation isn’t necessary.

The expansive world of the Dragon Ball franchise does come with some confusion within the fandom. The latest addition to the series, Dragon Ball Daima, has become the subject of it. Fans aren’t sure if it’s canon, although it is a continuation of the Majii Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z.

From the art style to the completely new realm Goku and friends have entered, Dragon Ball Daima stands out in the franchise. New villains were introduced and the characters we love are much smaller. It’s both cute and funny while maintaining the same stakes as any other Dragon Ball series.
Now that Daima has come to a conclusion with 20 episodes on February 28, 2025, fans are still itching to find out if the series is connected to the overall franchise. The updated appearance of Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 doesn’t make it easier.

Dragon Ball Daima may have been an enjoyable watch for many, but it left too many questions unanswered for me. When an installment is completed, it needs to tie up all the loose ends and be conclusively done.

While the animation was fluid, exceptionally vibrant, and attractive, with action sequences that were exciting, the story itself felt incomplete and lacking for me. Certain plot points were barely explored, leaving room for a second season, but only if the plotholes are going to be addressed.
Daima left too many unanswered questions
We need to remember that Daima is canon and occurs before Dragon Ball Super, this means that anything that is revealed in Daima should already have been common knowledge in Super. That is why the Super Saiyan forms of Goku and Vegeta are such difficult reveals to reconcile.

When Dragon Ball Daima was announced, the fandom was excited, as the series was the last project that Akira Toriyama was working on before he tragically passed away. However, the fans have vehemently hated the series, following its snail-paced plot and unwanted characters that merely overcrowded the scenes.

To divide the ardent fans even more, the series finally bridged the gap with Dragon Ball Gt, making SSJ4 canon. What flabbergasted them to their core was Vegeta finally receiving his Super Saiyan 3 form. These scenes are indeed memorable and became key highlights of the show.
However, these very scenes overshadowed one key detail that holds the door open for a fusion that keeps the options limitless.
Dragon Ball Daima opened the door for the most electrifying fusion
It comes as no surprise that fusion has always played a prominent role in turning the tide in a battle.

Dragon Ball Daima has become controversial due to its use of the Super Saiyan 4 transformation, but it turns out the truth behind Daima's Super Saiyan 4 is that Toriyama did it himself. The reveal has overturned a popular fan theory that the transformation's design was done by others, and not Toriyama.
Daima surprised fans by including the seemingly forgotten transformation, although its inclusion in the series has created a number of continuity issues with Dragon Ball Super. Because of this, some fans suspected that Super Saiyan 4's inclusion may not have been Toriyama's decision, but rather one made by the studio to ensure there was a climactic new transformation moment for the series. The version of Super Saiyan 4 seen in the series is slightly different from the version seen in Dragon Ball Gt, as Goku has red-colored hair, similar to the fur of the form, and seemingly has much bigger hands.

Although the final episodes of Dragon Ball Daima earned critical acclaim for their nonstop action, breathtaking animation and jaw-dropping reveals -- such as the canonical introduction of Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta -- the overall reception to the series remains polarizing. Users of the popular media database website IMDb have rated Dragon Ball Daima following its series finale in late February. The score, as it stands now, is 8.0/10 stars. While the score is favorable when judged by itself, it’s also still the lowest-ranking score for a canonical anime in the Dragon Ball series.

Now that Dragon BallDAIMA has concluded, and with no immediate release date for the next chapter of Dragon Ball Super, fans of the manga and anime have once again entered the industries' equivalent of Super's World of Void – a time and space devoid of new Dragon Ball content. However, there is at least one individual willing to help rescue the fan base from the void.
As shared by Nicolas D. Kaiwai, an aspiring mangaka, on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account @KaiwaiDB, legendary animator, character designer, and manga artist Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru recently revealed that he would eagerly take on the opportunity to create a Dragon Ball manga if given the chance. For fans of the Dragon Ball manga and anime, no announcement could be more exciting — provided that producers Shueisha and Toei Animation act on his offer.

When Dragon Ball Super introduced Orange Piccolo, it was great to see him back in action. After being relegated to the role of mentoring the younger generation for so long and having to powerlessly spectate as the Saiyans faced extremely powerful threats one after the other, Piccolo finally had a chance to be relevant again.

With a belly full of fire and realizing the potential that was always hidden within him, Piccolo was ready to step into the spotlight again. Some fans may argue that this is exactly what happened. But the way his power-up was handled felt unearned.
A Saiyan-focused story left Piccolo behind
Rather than naturally developing his strength through his Namekian lineage, which we know to be massively mysterious and powerful (they create and guard Dragon Balls), he was given a quick Shenron boost.

Dragon Ball Daima was a complete roller coaster ride and has officially wrapped up after 20 episodes, leaving fans wondering what’s next. Dragon Ball series is a legacy series that has continued for about four decades.

The anime itself is so old that it inspired the likes of the ‘Big 3’. While the series had its share of highs and lows, one thing is clear: it is an antiquated concept now. While Dragon Ball Super has modern-looking visuals, it essentially follows the same idea of power scaling that the franchise kept constantly reusing.
What happens to Dragon Ball now that Daima is over?
On the contrary, Dragon Ball Daima was a fresh breath of air. It brought back the innocent sense of adventure, hope, and fun that the original Dragon Ball series had. It...

The Z fighters have been growing stronger and protecting the Earth (as well as the universe), but one of them has been left behind. It is Piccolo, the friendly neighborhood Namekian who had dedicated himself to training the next generation when he found that he could no longer keep up with the Saiyans.

But this all changed with Piccolo’s Orange transformation. This was a game-changer in Dragon Ball Super, making him stronger than ever and bringing him back to the frontlines.
Piccolo was one of the most intriguing characters in Dragon Ball, and many fans were disappointed when he was relegated to the position of spectator. But is this a blessing or a curse? Could Piccolo turn into something sinister and turn on humans?
Could Orange Piccolo rival Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego?
Goku and Vegeta have earned their power through intense training, a lot of battles,...

Fights are one of the main aspects any Dragon Ballanime will be judged by. While less violent and story-driven than other installments in the franchise, Dragon Ball Daima still features some of the best battles in the franchise. This mainly comes down to the anime looking positively gorgeous, and the lengths the series goes to to provide long-awaited fan-service.
Dragon Ball Daima sports the best animation of any Dragon Ball anime to date, which is most apparent during its incredible fights. Goku looks especially great in action, whether he's using his Power Pole or his Super Saiyan transformations, but Vegeta and Majin Duu pull their weight as well. It's within these battles that Dragon BallDAIMA offers its most hype moments, such as the canon debuts of Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta and Super Saiyan 4 Goku.
