The 70s were a time when television would seem to try anything at least once. Science Fiction was one of the main genres where this was very true. Thanks to the success of series like Star Trek, and Lost in Space there was a deluge of, off beat and actually good genre TV (as we explored on last week’s Land of the Lost episode). Typically it was with some sort of toy tie-in or angle to get children to watch and/or buy something. And just wait until Star Wars happened.

But, the early 70s would find a new kind of hero to grab the hearts and minds of kids across the country and he’d bring with him some of the coolest toys around. Because, he was literally made up of metal and plastic himself.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice introduced a great number of DC Universe heroes to live-action, and the most ignored hero that would go on to feature in Justice League was given one of the most compelling introductions. While there is much to love about the Dceu, the franchise faced pressure to quickly introduce many of its characters, leading to a theatrical cut of Justice League that felt underdeveloped. This has led the new Dcu to prioritize even Teen Titans before another Justice League film. However, much of the Dceu worked, especially a few particular hero introductions.

Baki is a grappling tale that stands at the pinnacle through its profound and compelling themes. Often, the Shonen series is mistaken for Seinen because of its bloody and gory visuals and power-packed fights.

Other than that, it is one of the bestselling manga in the shonen genre. It peaks in terms of its well-written and fleshed-out characters. And while the series has its fair share of overhyped characters, this underdog deserves more respect.

The Dceu was dark, but the introductory scene for Cyborg was absolutely wild, with a brief but traumatic cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Dceu had more than its fair share of issues. Despite a promising start in 2013 with Man of Steel, it wasn't long until the entire universe began to fall to pieces. And one of the core issues was how abruptly and rapidly the universe tried to introduce a team of heroes without any real context.

In fact, in the second movie of the entire Dceu, the film featured a gratuitous cameo sequence that left all the action of the film behind to essentially set up trailers for upcoming hero movies. Bruce Wayne makes contact with Wonder Woman, and sends over files that he procured from Lex Luthor which reveal a first glimpse of the Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, and presumably Wonder Woman herself, though her clip is not shown.

While the Avengers may be Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the team is typically built for versatility rather than lethal power. Lots of different skills and superpowers are needed to head off every possible threat to the planet, resulting in everyone from Hawkeye to Thor having a place on the team. Canadian actress and model Dayle Haddon died Friday from a suspected incident of carbon monoxide poisoning which took place at the home of her son-in-law, Marc Blucas, who starred in the TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” according to local authorities. She was 76.

Haddon was discovered in Blucas’ home in Bucks County, Pa. CBS referenced a police officer stating high levels of carbon monoxide were detected inside the property. A malfunction with the heating unit was also suspected. It has not yet been confirmed if Blucas was present at the time of death.

Dayle Haddon has died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in what appears to be a tragic freak accident at the home of her son-in-law, Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Marc Blucas.

CBS News reports that the Canadian actress and supermodel, aged 76, was found Friday in Blucas’s home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, after police were called to the scene. CBS quoted a police officer reporting that a high level of carbon monoxide was detected inside the property and that a heating unit malfunction was suspected. It is not yet known if Blucas was at home at the time of the incident.

Dayle Haddon, a model and actress in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, died Friday in a suspected carbon monoxide leak at a home in Pennsylvania, authorities told CBS News. She was 76.

The Solebury Township Police Department said it responded to a home in Bucks County just after 9 a.m. on Friday after receiving a call about a man “lying down, passed out on the first floor of a detached office/in-law suite.” The 76-year-old man, whose identity has yet to be revealed, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities then found a 76-year-old woman, later identified as Haddon, dead in a second-floor bedroom. While investigating the scene, the fire department detected a high level of carbon monoxide in the property.

“Preliminary investigation is showing that a heating unit malfunctioned exposing a large amount of carbon monoxide within the carriage house,” Detective Sgt. Jonathan Koretzky told CBS News.

The DC Universe has a unique opportunity ahead of it. After a decade of DC films with mixed reception, the franchise is receiving a reboot with an all-new creative team, helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The previous iteration, called the DC Extended Universe, kicked off with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel in 2013. While fan reception of the film was somewhat accepting, the darker, more realistic take on Superman it offered created a shaky foundation for the rest of the series.

Additionally, the Dceu jumped straight from a solo Superman film to the crossover Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which had the lofty job of introducing Batman and Wonder Woman as well as teasing the rest of the Justice League. That movie largely set the tone moving forward. There are plenty of unique characters in the Metal Gear series, both science fiction and supernatural. From massive mechanical threats like the Metal Gears to clone soldiers like Solid Snake, the series has continuously demonstrated how warfare has advanced. We all needed an alternative to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sorry, Feige, but it just hasn’t felt the same since Avengers: Endgame. I know we needed to start from the bottom in order to build credible characters once more, but you won’t be achieving the same levels of fan hype from a 10-year build out of three (let’s be real — nothing in the last six years that has been theatrically released blows fans’ minds). With James Gunn's Dcu on the horizon, there's a hefty handful of projects to look forward to. Long gone are the Dceu days of scrapped projects and crushed dreams because there's a new head honcho. The Dcu in late 2024 is all about open-mindedness and looking forward to the future. Creature Commandos(which releases on December 5th, 2024) and 2025's David Corenswet-led Superman both stand as beacons of hope for DC Comics fans whose hearts were ripped out by the failings of the DC Extended Universe. While the Dcu is only trending upwards right now, it's hard not to look back and wonder what could've been, especially for one particular scrapped 2020 film.

In October 2024, Warner Bros. announced a slate of 11 films to be featured in the newest cinematic universe, the Dceu. The slate was a 6-year plan featuring Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, Aquaman, and a few other projects.

While Bloodsport, the 1988 martial arts tournament movie, is widely considered by fans to be Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best film, it almost never saw the light of day. Indeed, according to Nick De Semlyen’s book, “Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the film was deemed unreleasable by Cannon Pictures head Menachem Golan. The film sat on the shelf for fourteen months and was considered so bad that Golan intended to release the movie direct-to-video. Things got so heated that Golan refused to go ahead with a proposed sequel to Lone Wolf McQuade, which would have featured Van Damme teaming up with Chuck Norris (who was an early mentor to Jcvd). He wanted Michael Dudikoff instead.

According to the book, Van Damme, who had returned to his old job as a limo driver when Bloodsport wrapped, convinced the studio to allow him to re-edit the film with Towering Inferno editor Carl Press.

Fans of the Teen Titans will be shocked to learn that one of the most Iconic members of the team was almost left out DC's latest series. The team's brand is thriving, with the Teen Titans established as equal to the Justice League in the main DC Universe, while a separate series of Young Adult graphic novels breathe new life into the characters, with Teen Titans: Starfire set to be the next entry in the YA anthology.

Akira Toriyamas Dragon Ball is celebrated for many diverse reasons and its managed to become such an evergreen hit thats lasted the test of time because its not just one thing. Dragon Ball loves to dabble in fantasy, gag comedy, and even occasionally horror, but its the series exaggerated action sequences and battles that typically receive the most praise.

Dragon Ball has showcased endlessly innovative fights, some of which rely upon totemic transformations, while others are decided by who has the most powerful energy attacks or martial arts skills. However, Dragon Ball has also introduced some memorable weapons that have helped aid heroes and villains in battle, but also their everyday lives. Weapons dont always get their due in Dragon Ball, but these are the most significant tools that have left a lasting mark on the franchise.

Last January, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran announced a slate of upcoming Dcu movies and TV shows.

On the big screen, fans were promised Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp-Thing. As for the small one, Creature Commandos, Lanterns, Waller, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold were all unveiled.

Last year's WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes slowed things down a little but Superman is in post-production, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is gearing up to begin shooting soon, and Lanterns is assembling its cast. Creature Commandos is also fast approaching.

However, the Dcu slate has continued to evolve. Peacemaker season 2 seemingly came out of the blue, while the trades have shared word on animated Blue Beetle and Robin projects along with movies revolving around the Teen Titans, Bane, and Deathstroke. Definitive updates on many of the titles announced last year have also been few and far between.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is one of the most popular Shonen series at the current time; it has featured a ton of defining moments in 25 years. However, a major credit for the fame should ideally go to the voice actors of the Straw Hat Pirates. One such name that has resonated quite well with the fans is Kazuki Yao, the voice behind Cyborg Franky.

The actor has been involved in voicing the character since 2000, first playing the role of Jango and later Mr. 2 in 2001, later becoming the permanent voice of the Straw Hat Member in 2005. Indeed, he was a core part of the show’s production.

Sadly, the deteriorating health of Yao-San will force him to lend his voice to the iconic character for one last time in the upcoming episode, 1120. The fans were heartbroken as they expressed their concern for the health of the actor.

Alongside X-Men: The Animated Series and the shows within the DC Animated Universe, Teen Titans is often hailed as one of the greatest animated superhero shows of the '90s and 2000s. Featuring the most iconic members of the team from the comics and taking great inspiration from anime, the series stood out from its contemporaries with its unique style and its perfect balance of jokes with more serious storylines. Every season of the series is consistent with each other while also standing apart, with the core differences between them coming down to their central hero, their main antagonist, and the strength of their story arcs.

Full of action, comedy, and heart, Teen Titans spanned five spectacular seasons. These seasons see the Titans fighting major villains like Slade, Brother Blood, and Trigon, as well as memorable minor threats like Mad Mod, Control Freak, and Blackfire. While Titans and Teen Titans Go!

DC Studios kicked off last year by revealing the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" Dcu slate. The downside was it told people that 2023's Dceu movies didn't matter and, for the most part, they ended up flopping.

Reviews also weren't overly kind and the DC brand is now very nearly damaged beyond repair (even Joker: Folie à Deux looks set to underperform at the box office this weekend). As a result, it's up to James Gunn and Peter Safran to turn things around. 

However, as the Dcu slate continues to expand - without a single one of their movies playing in theaters - it's time to look back at how "Gods and Monsters" has evolved. There are good and bad elements and a great many unanswered questions.

In 2020, a few years after the release of the much-maligned Justice League film, Cyborg actor Ray Fisher first alleged that director Joss Whedon's treatment of the cast was "gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable." Jean-Claude Van Damme is one of the most iconic martial arts and action movie stars in the world, thanks in large part to his incredible footwork throughout his many fight scenes. The Belgian martial artist and actor has become synonymous with bombastic hand-to-hand combat over the course of Van Damme's impressive filmography, with each new credit to his name showing off some new fighting form or technique that nearly revolutionized the industry. As a real-life former kickboxer, Van Damme is able to combine his valuable combat experience with his trademark hip flexibility to craft some eye-popping strikes with his legs in his films. Mark Wahlberg has been attached to a remake of The Six Million Dollar Man since 2014, with Peter Berg, Damian Szifron, and Travis Knight among the filmmakers to have taken a crack at the project before it got caught up in rights issues at Skydance.

All we really know is that the movie has been retitled The Six Billion Dollar Man and that Wahlberg still hopes to play the title character.

Cyborg Superman is set to appear in My Adventures With Superman season 3, after being teased in season 2. Hank Henshaw's character development hints at his transformation into Cyborg Superman. The show's focus on character relationships can provide an emotional arc for Cyborg Superman in season 3.

DC is finally set up to have the best adaptation of Cyborg Superman, 31 years after Hank Henshaw became the formidable villain in the comics. A recent image from San Diego Comic-Con 2024 for My Adventures With Superman season 3 highlights the villains that will appear, including a bald Lex Luthor, Waller, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Deathstroke and numerous others who were previously not seen. This seems to include Cyborg Superman, who will be featured in the upcoming season following his tease in season 2, episode 1.

"Teen Titans Go!" is a bit of a controversial cartoon among fans, as it is a much more comedic, kid-friendly version of the 2003 "Teen Titans" cartoon (which was darker and more anime-inspired). Some fans see "Teen Titans Go!" as representative of the uber-commercialization of art, a cash-grab of a show with none of the heart of the original.
