People may be surprised to learn that staying out of the ocean won’t guarantee their safety from sharks. In fact, a dip in a river or pond could lead to an encounter with one of the most aggressive sharks in the world: the bull shark. Strangely enough, though, the Carcharhinus leucas doesn’t show up in sharksploitation movies anywhere near as much as its larger and more popular cousin, the great white. Many don’t even know of its existence until they hear of a sighting or attack in an unlikely place.
Jaws led to great whites becoming the face of shark horror. Of course, there are exceptions — Deep Blue Sea features bio-engineered mako sharks, and Syfy went through a period of unleashing one variety of mutant shark after another — yet as a whole, sharksploitation prefers great whites. Then in 2003, TBS Superstation mixed things up by having a bull...

Rush Week at the University of Alabama, which has become a viral sensation on TikTok, will be subject of a new doc from Vice Studios, according to Variety. According to Al.com, over 2,300 students—mostly women, mostly white—received bids from the 17 sororities that participated this year. Of the students who accepted bids, only nine percent of them self-identified as racial or ethnic minorities. On Aug. 12, the New York Times confirmed that a Bama Rush...

While most comedy sequels never live up to the original, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising may finally be the exception to the rule. It's sticking pretty close to the formula that made the original 2014 comedy Neighbors such a hit, while also bringing a finely tuned twist. Not to mention some heavy artillery in the form of new cast members. First, the very popular Chloe Moretz was added as the leader of a sorority who moves in next-door to a married couple played by Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. Now, Chloe Moretz's sorority sister has been revealed, and it's Selena Gomez!

In 2009 an urban legend turned out to be true and a college hazing turned out to be deadly in Hellweek, a horror film you've probably never seen. In 2013 the film was released. Now, in 2014, a special grindhouse edition is here. Read on for details.

While "American Idol" Season 13 Rush Week was pretty brutal, the atmosphere during the show's Top 13 elimination show was still tense. Malaya Watson, Mk Nobilette and Kristen O'Connor were the first three singers sent to the bottom. Which one went home?
In the end, Kristen was sent packing. There is a save, which expires at Top 6 week, but clearly the judges weren't going to use it the very first week -- and they didn't. Here's how it went down:
The first group brought onstage to hear results was Malaya, Jena, Alex and Ben. While Ben, Alex and Jena were sent to safety, Malaya was sent to the first stool of doom. (That wasn't too shocking since her rendition of Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby" was all over the place -- in a bad way.)

Is the fat lady about to sing? Thursday night's broadcast of American Idol hit an all-time ratings low. The Fox musical competition slumped to a mere 2.4 out of 7—the lowest number in the series' history, and down 20 percent from last Thursday's semi-finalist reveal. This week, Idol debuted their first ever "Rush Week," an expedited elimination process that started off with 30 singing hopefuls and cut more than a third of their talented group in just three days. Despite revealing this season's top 13 finalists, only 9.2 million viewers tuned in to last night's hour-long broadcast. Throughout the week, many Idol fans claimed that with the new rush week formatting, the judges...

So which 10 contestants did America send through? And which three contestants were chosen as judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.'s wild card picks? America, meet your Top 10! Ben Briley, Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, Mk Nobilette, Emily Piriz, Alex Preston, Dexter Roberts, Majesty Rose, Malaya Watson and...

J.Lo is back in the spotlight and looking amazing! We couldn’t be happier to see the very fashionable judge take her place on the stage, but how did you feel about her latest look? Vote.
Jennifer Lopez, 44, has been in and out of the fashion spotlight — and now she’s back in action as judge for Season 13 of American Idol. She stepped onto the stage for the Feb. 19 episode rocking a major trend for the upcoming season — wide-leg trousers. Although it’s a difficult look for some to pull off, this multi-tasking mom was just glowing as she exhibited the right way to rock the style. We are applauding you J.Lo!

Fifteen men. Fifteen layered “rocker” outfits from H&M. Fifteen obligations to make preteen girls clap, whinny, and vote. Who will win? Who will whinny?
I did a couple of times. Not raucously, but overall, the first showcase of American Idol‘s male contestant crop was much better than the distaff half’s debut on Tuesday night. Some areas of improvement over the ladies: less screaming; more looking-like-they-belong-on-a-stage; handsomeness; guitar antics; palpable sensuality; faces for gay men to enjoy. Maybe we didn’t get a tender, tearful moment in the vein of M.K. Nobilette‘s whispery triumph on Tuesday, but I think we clearly saw five dudes fulla feelings emerge as frontrunners. Which is convenient, considering only five are guaranteed to proceed.
I know this isn’t news to readers of TheBacklot, but it must be stated: Adam Lambert, who again appeared as a guest mentor alongside the world...

Did you like Sam as much as we did? Watch his performance, then drop a comment with Your top ‘Idol’ pick from Rush Week!
This season’s top 15 guys went head to head (voice to voice?) on the Feb. 19 episode of American Idol, and while there were quite a few stand-out performers, one contestant stood head and shoulders above the rest: Sarasota, Fla., resident Sam Woolf! Excuse me while I totally fan-girl over him.
Not only was Sam’s version of David Gray‘s “Babylon” a breezy romp of plucky perfection, but the charming brunette had the entire audience eating out of the palm of his hand. I hate to be ‘that guy,’ but Sam totally fits the mold of past winners like Phillip Phillips and David Cook – and by that, I mean he’s a handsome white guy with a guitar. American Idol returned on Wednesday with the all-male portion of Rush Week, where the top 10 guys performed before a live audience in the hopes of cracking into the final group of singers.
'American Idol' Recap
As with the girls, the 15 male semi-finalists waited nervously to see if their names were called by Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez or Harry Connick Jr. to hit the stage and sing for America’s votes. Idol alums Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry were back mentoring in the workshop, as was veteran judge Randy Jackson.
Caleb Johnson, the 70s Meat Loaf lookalike, was the first name called. Singing “Stay with Me” by The Faces. Johnson carried the song by the British rock band admirably, while working the stage like a pro. Perhaps his biggest fan at the judges table, Urban, said the performance was “killer.”
Next up, was the soulful Cj Harris. Harris took on Ray Lamontagne song “Shelter,...

With the initial shock of American Idol’s Rush Week in the rearview mirror, it was the guys’ turn to find out which vocalists made it to the top ten. “We already know that five great singers are not going to get to sing,” said judge Keith Urban, who admitted that the evening’s choices went “down to the wire” in Jennifer Lopez’s dressing room. Lopez seemed confident that the judges made the correct decisions, and promised that the program is showcasing a “new breed of musician and singer.” Photos: 'American Idol' Season 13 Ad Campaign Champions the Everyman Also on

15 entered, 10 performed, five were ousted. In the second night of American Idol's brutal "Rush Week," it was the guys' turn to take the stage and perform for America's votes. Well, not all the guys as the Fox reality hit's three judges, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr., eliminated five of the hopefuls before they even got a chance to sign. Way harsh, no?! Tuesday's show saw the exit of five ladies, including Brandy Neely, Austin Wolfe, Andrina Brogden, Kenzie Hall and Jillian Jensen. So which five guys were sent home on Wednesday night? And what did the 10 lucky contestants who made it to the stage sing? First, let's do a quick run down of the Top 10...

We get it, Harry — you don’t like when young singers take on mature songs. But when Emily Piriz totally nailed Grace Potter and the Nocturnal’s ‘Ooh La La,’ it was so inappropriate to call her out and embarrass her.
When Emily Piriz, 18, took the stage for Rush Week on American Idol, she completely rocked her version of “Ooh La La,” which yes, is a very sexual song. While this wasn’t the first time judge Harry Connick Jr. disproved of a contestant singing this song, calling her out the way he did was rude and uncalled for.
Harry Connick Jr. Embarrassed Emily Piriz
To give you a little background, the singer took the stage and did freakin’ amazing, but apparently that didn’t matter to Harry who just asked her to read the words of the first two lines of the song.

I know I’ve spent about 75 percent of these recaps raving about how fast everything is moving, but I seriously can’t believe it. I’m so used to American Idol spinning its wheels, stretching everything (except the music) to ten times its normal length. But check this out: It is mid-February, and we are already at the live shows. We’ll have a top 13 by the end of this week. If I didn’t work in the television industry, I’d swear the producers actually started to have a little bit of respect for their audience. It’s Rush Week! Just like in college, except somehow crueler and therefore much more fun to watch! And here’s how it goes: We are down to our top 15 women, ten of whom will perform tonight, and then we will call in and choose the top five. In short, it is going to be a bloodbath.

It's Rush Week on American Idol, which means the season 13 contestants are performing live for the very first time. There were plenty of nerves to go around on Tuesday night when the girls took to the stage. Did anyone rise to the occasion? Who fell under pressure? And who's going home on Thursday?
Out of the 15 girls in the Top 31, only 10 were chosen by the judges to perform. The biggest shocker was Kenz Hall being cut. This doesn't make any sense to me because she's one of the best this year -- how do you get rid of someone like her so soon? Can the producers change the rules and give her another chance? At the very least, I hope she's able to audition again next year.

There were new twists, familiar faces and loads of drama on American Idol Tuesday night, as the ladies kicked off the first of the live performance shows.
The new twists? In what was dubbed Rush Week, the judges reviewed tapes of the Top 15 Girls and picked the 10 that impressed them the most to perform, surprising the ladies one at a time.
The familiar faces? Randy Jackson, the "Dogfather" of Idol, was back to mentor the contestants, leading a sort of Rush Week "wisdom workshop" for the pledges, which included vocal coaching from former Idol contestants Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry,...

American Idol kicked off the live episodes on Tuesday night, where the judges selected 10 of the top 15 girls to sing for America’s votes in its first ever Rush Week.
The 15 girls that were selected at the end of Hollywood week received the mentorship of Randy Jackson, Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry and Rickey Minor. They also received style makeovers and even some spiritual advising. Unfortunately, five of the polished singers would not get the chance to sing before the live audience. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. had narrowed down the field to the 10 who outshone the others during dress rehearsals and throughout the workshop process.
Majesty Rose was the first name call by the trio of judges. She came out with her guitar to sing Pharrell’s hit song “Happy.” Many of the performances that followed didn’t match up to Rose’s stage presence or the pure strength of her voice.

It's time for Rush Week on "American Idol." No. I don't know what "Rush Week" means either. Randy Jackson is excited about his new role on "American Idol." The former judge is now Season 13's mentor, and the ringleader of the show's newest round: a bootcamp/workshop for the Top 30 contestants held a few weeks before the live shows began to assimilate them into the "Idol" schedule.

"American Idol" is finally getting to some live performances this week, with the Top 15 girls kicking things off Tuesday (Feb. 18) and the Top 15 boys performing Wednesday. But before they can take the (revamped) "Idol" stage, the Top 30 have to go through Randy Jackson's boot camp first.
Above, Jackson, as the new in-house mentor, addresses the contestants. Then below, former "Idol" stars Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry help out with staging, arrangements, style and just any general advice they have for the contestants.
If you'd like to know what a day at boot camp is like, check out Zap2it's on-the-scene account in this photo gallery and tune in Tuesday at 8 p.m. Et/Pt for the first night of "Rush Week" before we have our Top 13 finalists.

Randy Jackson returns to American Idol tonight in his new role as mentor, guiding the contestants through Rush Week. The 31 remaining hopefuls will cycle through Jackson's workshop, a series of classes focusing on vocal skills, styling and social-media training. Former finalists Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry will also be around to field questions. Idol's top dawg breaks down the intensive two-day process.
TV Guide Magazine: Why did you want to come back for this workshop?
Jackson: Being a judge, you don't have that closeness with the kids. I know they have a trillion questions, so I really wanted to prepare them for the show and make it informative. You've got all these people at the top of their fields who want to help. This is for the rest of the [contestants'] lives, so they have to take advantage. It's like a college-prep course, and I'm the dean!

Being an "American Idol" contestant is incredibly nerve-wracking -- even when there are no stakes involved. For the show's 13th season, producers have added a new element into the final week of preliminary competition: a workshop/boot camp with judge-turned-mentor Randy Jackson.
To experience this new round firsthand, I spent a cloudy January day going through each station in the "Idol" bootcamp. I wasn't even a real contestant, but it was one of the most terrifying professional experiences I've ever had. (Putting things into perspective: I spent the day at a luxurious beachside Southern California resort on the set of one of my favorite television shows. This is clearly a first world problem.)
I knew I'd have to sing eventually. I was sort of prepared, in that I sang in high school choir and I am acquainted with the inside of a karaoke booth. But I wasn't actually ready to...
