Way back in August 2014, Dimension Films released the first trailer for Amityville: The Awakening, which at the time, was scheduled to hit theaters on January 2, 2015. Just a month later, the studio yanked the film out of its release date, and we haven't heard anything about it since then. Today, The Weinstein Company has released yet another trailer, which features largely the same footage as the first teaser, with the movie now set for release on April 1. This thriller will be going up against Collide, God's Not Dead 2 and Rings.

Amityville: The Awakening is a revival of the popular franchise and a modern twist on the classic horror film. In the movie, Belle (Bella Thorne) and her family move into a new house, but when strange phenomena begin to occur, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn't telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.

The beginning of May every year means one thing to me and thousands of other horror fanatics around the world. 112 Ocean Avenue, Long Island is probably the most famous haunted house in the world. Not that you’ll necessarily recognise the address – it’s far better known as the Amityville Horror house. Back in 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into the house… and then 28 days later, they moved back out, claiming to have been driven out by supernatural forces. Their story made the news, was turned into a book, and then made into a movie, in 1979.

It’s hard to imagine now that a family claiming to have encountered the devil in their basement could cause such a massive fuss, but I’m not here to interrogate the truth of their statement. What I am here to do, though, is to watch all of the Amityville Horror movies made to date,...

From random films with altered names to unrelated storylines, we take a look at 15 incredibly tenuous horror and sci-fi film sequels...

The profit-driven nature of filmmaking usually means that, if a movie's a hit, sequels follow. And it's sometimes the case that, particularly in the realm of low-budget sci-fi and horror, those sequels are trotted out in a rush, or don't have anything to do with the film they're following.

This isn't to say that the sequels on this list are necessarily bad - it's a proper mixed bag of the great, the mediocre and the downright awful - but in each instance, these sequels have only vague links to their predecessors, or worse still, they're entirely different films rebranded to fit an existing franchise.  

Our list is by no means definitive - rather, we've chosen a collection of films that we find the most memorable.

  Despite a handful of notable exceptions, horror sequels aren't exactly known for being the greatest movies in the world. Franchises typically overstay their welcome for far too long, resulting in never-ending cash grab sequels that are endlessly inferior to the films that spawned them. For every exceptional sequel like A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors or Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, there are several well past their prime installments like Hellraiser: Revelations and Leprechaun Back 2 Tha Hood, which is why we horror fans tend to look down on sequels, sight unseen.   Unfortunately, because of the proven track record of horror sequels, and the bad feelings that are inherently attached to them, there are a handful of truly impressive sequels that don't get a whole lot of respect, simply because they're either attached to franchises that fans had long given up on by the time they came around,...

Thanks to that crazy haunted house house that resides in Amityville, N.Y. we've seen ten films based on the house, and now this latest addition to the Amityville collection that will supposedly be the "first time ever that the true prequel to the Amityville horror will be told.”

Just a little refresher course... Amityville is home to the infamous house in which Ronald DeFeo, Jr. murdered six members of his family in 1974. George Lutz and his family moved into the house a year later. They were forced to move out of the house 28 days later due to a series of terrifying hauntings they encountered. The case became the subject of Jay Anson’s 1977 book The Amityville Horror: A True Story.
