Dark anime is a fascinating world to explore, especially when they dive into the human psyche. To easily evoke emotion from humans, psychological horror does the job since it draws upon feelings of unease, tension and thrill that aren't often touched upon in regular media. Criminal Minds tells some of the darkest stories that exist and anime also has a knack of becoming just as disturbing.
Anime continues to challenge its standards by diving deeper and leaning toward more gritty storytelling. It's fascinating to see how anime categorized as dark evolves throughout the years and how it compares to dark anime from older eras. Both newer and older dark anime all exhibit common themes that they explore: mortality, humanity and moral ambiguity.

Go Nagai is one of the most successful mangakas and is currently famous for creating series like Devilman, Mazinger Z, and Violence Jack. Devilman Crybaby, a popular Ona, is also based on Nagai’s initial Devilman manga. The series has mature content and portrays a battle between demons and humans.
The mix of s*xual and violent acts makes it slightly traumatizing for even adults. Crybaby was far darker and grittier as well as more explicit than its source material, but you should not judge Nagai’s manga solely based on that. After all, one of his very first works had teachers and PTA protesting on every other street in Japan.

Through his provocative, original style, John Waters has made many films that garnered cult followings. In the majority of his mainstream movies, the characters and plot are usually exaggerated, creating a campy style of entertainment. Still bound in reality somewhat, this creates room for brilliant comedic stories. He satirized themes like suburban living, celebrity culture and gender roles. Even when aiming for gross-out or comedy, Waters reflects on the darker sides of society. In his film Crybaby, this is prevalent, and it's even more so in his hilariously dark comedy Serial Mom.
Serial Mom follows Beverly Sutphin, a suburban mother who seems normal, but has a gross infatuation with all things murderous. She quickly transforms from what the police call her, "Beaver Cleaver's mother," to a grand suspect in multiple murders in their suburban Baltimore town. Initially, Beverly seems like a typical suburban mom who audiences have seen in every classic sitcom.

Ever since the anime community has gained world recognition, the one thing that has remained constant is the love for the Japanese version of the many series from the community. Be it an anime movie or a series, fans prefer the original version with subtitles over the English dub version as it doesn’t have that authentic feel to it.

Devilman Crybaby captures the Lovecraftian horror and character dynamics of Berserk, with similarities between Akira and Guts. Fist of the North Star, a major inspiration for Berserk, features a protagonist similar to Guts and offers a thrilling, action-packed experience. The Rose of Versailles, despite being a shojo classic, shares similarities with Berserk in its court intrigue and character development.
It's no surprise that fans are on the lookout for the best anime like Berserk. After all, no franchise has moved the needle for the dark fantasy genre quite like Kentaro Miura's masterpiece. Since its publication in 1989, Berserk has become the subject of two anime series, three films, and three video games. Even popular video games like Elden Ring and Dark Souls borrow heavily from Berserk's legacy. With the recent release of Chapter 375 of the manga, it's clear that Guts' revenge-fueled journey continues to capture audiences nearly 35 years later.

Renowned punk rocker Iggy Pop has also had a successful acting career, including a surprising cameo appearance on an episode of Star Trek. Best remembered for his groundbreaking music career in the band Iggy and the Stooges in the late 1960s, Pop would also have a monumental solo career with hits of his own over the ensuing decades. Besides his seminal place in music history, Pop has also frequently acted in movies and TV shows, but his one-off appearance in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was still quite a surprise. Even if it was a small role, Pop's undeniable star power elevated the episode.
Deep Space Nine stood out from other Star Trek shows because of its dark tone and ominous plot lines involving war and galactic politics. Nevertheless, the series never missed an opportunity to bring in some levity, and many of the best episodes of DS9 were quite humorous.

Warning: Contains spoilers for One Piece episode 1044.The One Piece anime just finished covering Nico Robin’s best moment from the manga, and it managed to make it even better. During the Onigashima raid, Robin found herself pitted against Black Maria of the Tobi Roppo so Sanji can escape from her trap. The battle soon escalates to the point of Robin having to use a new technique called Gigante Fleur, a giant-sized version of her cloning technique that enhances both her strengths and her weaknesses.
Episode 1044 of the One Piece anime concluded Robin’s fight with Black Maria. When Gigante Fleur was proving to be ineffective, Robin unveiled both a Fishman Karate technique Koala taught her during the time skip and an upgraded version of Gigante Fleur called Demonio Fleur that allowed her to finally win the fight. Many shounen anime are understandably major crowd-pleasers when it comes to the genre overall thanks to being lighthearted and colorfully action-packed, but seinen series like this year's Golden Kamuy and even shounen giant Attack on Titan season 4 show how compelling darker anime can be.
Making an excellent grim anime can be its own challenge, as it can't afford to be dark for darkness' sake. However, many Redditors have cited some of the best dark anime they've ever seen. More expected anime like Berserk and Neon Genesis Evangelion were noted, but there are also some more subversive ones like Made in Abyss.

Poland’s American Film Festival readies for its — lucky — 13th edition, unspooling Nov. 8-13 in Wrocław.
The fest, which will open with “Bones and All” and close with Florian Zeller’s “The Son,” will once again combine classics with contemporary titles, for instance pairing Nancy Buirski’s doc “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” with John Schlesinger’s Oscar-winner, or introducing retrospectives dedicated to Robert Altman and Nina Menkes.
Menkes — behind “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” — will also get Aff’s Indie Star Award. Previous recipients include Todd Solondz, David Gordon Green, Hal Hartley, Whit Stillman, Rosanna Arquette and John Waters, who came to Poland last year.

The Chainsaw Man anime already began taking the world by storm even before the monumental first episode premiered on Crunchyroll not too long ago. Viewers, especially those who hadn't already read the original manga by mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto, were just blown away by the debut trailer and everything that soon followed. Part of what caught everyone's attention was both the haunting and sinister melodies and sounds from the composer, Kensuke Ushio.
The stunning range of musical styles that were incorporated in the debut trailer was quite impressive for those who were unfamiliar with Ushio's previous works at the time since the first teaser doesn't come close to reaching the two-minute mark. Even those who already had the pleasure of listening to Ushio's earlier soundtracks couldn't help but feel impressed either just because of how much these new sounds diverged from his already quite diverse catalog of music.

Tegan and Sara have shared the video for their new ballad “Faded Like a Feeling,” the latest single off the twin duo’s upcoming 10th studio album Crybaby.
The nostalgic visual for the track finds the Quin sisters on a swing set at a riverside park, staring pensively out toward the water as they ruminate on past relationships.
“Faded Like a Feeling” follows “Fucking Up What Matters” and the Coldplay-inspired “Yellow” off Crybaby, due out Oct. 21. Written amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Crybaby marks the Quin sisters’ most collaborative album in years.

Described by Spain’s San Sebastian Festival as “one of contemporary cinema’s most talented and versatile actors,” American actor Johnny Depp will receive San Sebastian’s highest honor, its Donostia Award, in a ceremony taking place on Sept. 22 at the festival’s Kursaal Auditorium.
Depp is already one of San Sebastian’s favorite sons, having figured as one of the highest profile star presences at last year’s on-site festival, where he co-presented “Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane McGowan” with director Julien Temple.
This year’s award puts Depp among recent honorees including Ethan Hawke, Sigourney Weaver, Judy Dench, Penelope Cruz and Viggo Mortensen.
Breaking out in the early 1990s with lead roles in John Waters’ “Cry Baby” and Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands,” Depp secured his left of field artistic credentials making films with prestigious foreign directors such as Emir Kusturica (“Arizona Dream”) and Lasse Hallström...

The last few months have been great for hip-hop. With multiple high-profile releases — some acclaimed, some commercially successful, and some both — and myriad buzzy new artists making big splashes in the genre, what should we expect in the rap field this year at the Grammys? Let’s consider some of the biggest contenders so far as well as a few possible hidden gems.
You can’t start a Grammys rap piece without mentioning one of the biggest hip-hop moments of the last 10 years: Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Wap.” The song is likely the front-runner for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. Add to that the overwhelming love Megan Thee Stallion just got in 2021, and how it’s still the biggest hit among eligible contenders, and you have a recipe for Grammys.
That said, “Wap” is a little old — it was eligible for the 2021 Grammys, but they...

Season 19 of “American Idol” added a twist to round out the Top 10. The reality competition series showcased 10 of the season 18 contestants in a special edition on April 19. Each of them got a chance to sing one song for America’s votes. The winner of this run-off joins the rest of the Top 10 who made the cut on April 18: Alyssa Wray, Caleb Kennedy, Casey Bishop, Cassandra Coleman, Chayce Beckham, Deshawn Goncalves, Grace Kinstler, Hunter Metts and Willie Spence.

His strongest rivals are Louis Knight, who just missed making the Top 5 and Makayla Phillips who was unlucky enough to be ousted when the Top 11 was pared down to seven. The other contenders in...

American Idol is throwing a major curveball at its Season 19 contestants: Only nine of them will advance to the Top 10 later this spring, with the final spot going to a contestant from last season.
ABC announced Monday that 10 singers from Season 18 — including runner-up Arthur Gunn — will return to Idol and compete for a spot in the current season’s Top 10. As executive producer and showrunner Trish Kinane told Billboard, the show wanted to give Season 18’s contestants a chance to perform on the big Idol stage, after the coronavirus pandemic forced live shows to happen remotely from singers’ homes last year.

I’d recently been absorbed in the deep colors and heartache of Douglas Sirk's melodramas, following on from this I found myself pining for more white picket fence drama, but with a twist. This is where John Waters came back into my world, how I had missed him, so this edition of Notebooks Soundtrack Mix is a sonic ode to a pioneer of perversion. I started back with Polyester (1981) and Serial Mom (1994), which, alongside Gus Van Sant's 1995 To Die For is a double bill I’m always dreaming of. The work of John Waters ramps up the technicolor dreams of Sirk and places them in a camp world of dysfunctional misfits. His work is a reminder to not take things so seriously and that there is a place for everyone in this world which, importantly, includes the poor, repugnant and nasty! Waters is famous for his use of...

Much like other major award shows, nominees for the Grammys often go on big media tours in order to promote themselves and their nominated work in hopes of boosting their chances of a possible win. While Grammy campaigning is definitely not as in-your-face as Oscar campaigning, it can still help keep artists in the public eye and potentially sway votes their way.
