Joe Bob Briggs is back at “The Last Drive-In,” with Shudder debuting the first trailer for its variety show’s seventh season ahead of its March 7 premiere.
Along with new footage and a promise of many double-features, the show also announced that the first episode would guest feature Spencer Charnas, frontman of the horror-slanted heavy metal band Ice Nine Kills. The program, hosted by Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl, also teased its season premiere programming, promising a 100th birthday celebration for “the first great American horror film.” This seventh season will cover more than 30 genre titles.
Charnas had previously teased his visit to the show to fans, posting on his own Instagram earlier this year, saying he is “Pre Lon’d up” — perhaps a reference to silent film star Lon Chaney ahead of the episode’s centennial celebration.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.
With Hollywood quick to hop on this trend train, what resulted was a wealth of interesting Frankenstein-style film ideas that simultaneously displayed the absurd excess and nostalgic conservatism the...

The character of Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) was introduced in Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Dr. Marcus had invented a revolutionary terraforming technology called the Genesis Wave which could be fired into a planet and rearrange the entire world's ecosystem to make it livable. In "Khan," the technology was still untested, and Dr. Marcus was searching for a life-free planet -- sans even scant microbes -- to terraform. With her was her bitter son David (Merritt Butrick) who expressed quite openly how much he hated the formalism and military underpinnings of Starfleet. He would rather carry out scientific experiments with his mother in peace.
It would eventually be revealed that Dr. Marcus was an old lover of Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and that David was actually Kirk's long-lost son. "Star Trek II" was at least partially devoted to Kirk reconnecting with Dr. Marcus,...

Few "bad" and "B" movies find themselves so far down the category's rabbit hole that they somehow transcend to the other side. It may depend on the movie at hand, but the fans will attest that this phenomenon in which they're "so bad they're great" typically occurs with some assistance. This could be a required mindset, a chosen enhancement consumed by the audience, or alongside a good riffing of said movie. Yet somehow, one such movie has escaped the purview of the general audience. That movie is Death Spa.

Every once in a while, the first few frames of a film will capture you. It isn’t common, but certain ones – in any genre – ingratiate right out of the gate. Such is the case with Death Spa (1988); when lightning hits the ‘Starbody Health Spa’ leaving only the letters ‘Death Spa’ lit up within the first moments, I knew I was in for some fun. Anything that riffs on Motel Hell (1980)’s ‘Motel Hello’ sign can’t be all bad, you know? Death Spa is as high energy as its title implies, twice as goofy, and has more than enough plot for three films.
It was a weird time for horror; by the late ‘80s slashers couldn’t cut through a paper bag, so filmmakers sometimes turned to the supernatural for new thrills (or at least ones absent from the screen for a bit). Director Michael Fischa (My Mom's a Werewolf...

Hello! It’s been a little while since we’ve had a new Catalog From The Beyond, hasn’t it? To be honest, in a year when it felt like my brain cells were squeezing out of my head like a tube of toothpaste, I had to take a break from some of the workload. But with the dawning of the New Year, I’m ready to hit the reset button and dive back into the Catalog.
I think it only fair to ease into things, however, so the following take won’t be the spiciest one I’ve ever put forth: Ken Foree seems like a pretty cool dude. After winning our hearts as the stoic Peter in George A. Romero’s classic Dawn of the Dead, he’s stayed there pretty much ever since in movies like From Beyond, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Lords of Salem, and...

There’s no denying that it can be an overwhelming experience to try and navigate your way through over 200 different pages of movies, so I went ahead and put together a list of 31 different films that should help you get into the Halloween spirit throughout the month of October. And since variety is the spice of life, I tried to give you guys an assortment of different sub-genres, so that you should be able to find something to fit any horror-loving mood! Happy October and happy viewing, everyone!

Though Scream Factory originally made their name by releasing comprehensive special editions of beloved horror titles and some lesser-known cult films deserving reappraisal, after five years the company is diversifying their output more and more. They struck an exclusive deal to release IFC Midnight titles, they’ve picked up a few films and put them out under the “Scream Factory” imprint, and have even developed and produced their very first original feature, Mark Pavia’s Fender Bender, in 2016. In addition to all of this, Scream Factory has begun releasing smaller and lesser-known catalogue titles, nearly bypassing the special features altogether and just giving some older cult titles their high-def debuts. Included in their latest slate of releases is everything from a John Stamos sci-fi action film (Never Too Young to Die) to an unofficial Troll sequel. Let’s take a look at four of these catalogue titles—The Screaming Skull,...

‘Tragedy Girls’ Has Fun With High School Homicides and HashtagsSay hello to your new favorite “maniac pixie nightmare girls.”
Tragedy Girls is a goddamn blast. That’s really all you need to know before seeing it because unless you hate smart laughs, gory kills, and kick-ass — albeit wildly homicidal — teenage girls you’re probably going to love this fresh, fast-moving mix of Scream meets Heathers meets 2017. But for those of you who need a bit more convincing, here goes.
Sadie (Brianna Hildebrand, Deadpool) and McKayla (Alexandra Shipp, X-Men: Apocalypse) are best friends and typical high-schoolers — they’re making plans for prom, their phones are bodily appendages, and they’re obsessed with their social media presence. They also share an interest in true crime via their “Tragedy Girls” blog, so of course they’re thrilled when a serial killer targets their town for a string of murders. While the rest of the town worries though the girls see...

An alternately intriguing and frustrating chiller has flashes of elegance but settles for unhinged hokum with bizarre results
An understandably forgotten mini-trend in the 80s was the strange idea to set horror films in gyms. Granted, the decade was generally monopolized by a sudden obsession with working out, but audiences weren’t that pumped with the prospect of seeing sweaty youths get crushed to death by weight-training equipment in films like Death Spa and Killer Workout.

Deathgasm, Jason Lei Howden’s horror/comedy from Down Under-ish, hit home video this week from Dark Sky Films, and we highly recommend you pick up a copy for your next family movie night. It’s a sweet and funny tale of friendship, music, and dildo violence, and it’s not to be missed. The Blu-ray and DVD are available at all of the expected retailers both online and in the real world, but one place you won’t see it is on the shelves at Wal-Mart. Well, they are selling the DVD in their stores, but they requested some minor changes to the cover art from the distributor presumably to protect their customers’ very souls. Here’s the normal cover available everywhere outside of Wal-Mart. I’m an admitted heathen and probably not the best person to judge, but it actually looks pretty tame to my eyes. Who needs weight reduction by terror?
Nothing is so bad that it's good. It's a lie. It's a rationalization for all the times we've wasted our time watching, listening, or reading things that were obviously terrible from the outset. Death Spa (1989), while it is too competently made in its first hour to be considered a cult classic, makes up for its relative decency with a final, climactic twenty minutes of the most repulsive images they could muster with the budget they had. As the reanimated body of a fish gnawed at the detective's jugular, sending gushes of Big Red around the room, I thought to myself, "This is terrible, but it isn't the worst thing I've seen." That says more about the ever-shrinking standards of the "horror" films tolerated (or loved) by viewers out of what they mistakenly believe to be irony. [Warning: Don't try to eat kimchi while watching this movie.]

Death Spa The hottest health spa in in town uses a state-of-the-art computer to help its clientele get the most out of their workouts, but the business is threatened when people start dying on the premises in wonderfully gory ways. Well, it would be threatened if the customers cared more about their safety than they do their bodies. It seems the owner’s wife, a woman who burned to death under mysterious circumstances, has returned for some supernatural vengeance. I won’t pretend that this late ’80s horror flick is a “good” movie per se, but there’s definitely a lot to enjoy here from the bloody gore effects to the decade-glorifying production design to its unabashed love of nudity to dialogue that delivers unintentional laughs. It’s a fun little movie that also earns...

It’s getting warmer out and you may just feel like checking in to a gym. What better place to start than “Death Spa”! A late 80's horror movie is loaded in amusement and high levels of gore. I would recommend the uncensored version since the gore is over the top for the gore hounds out there. It has a 4.9 on IMDb and it’s not as bad as you may think it is.
I found this movie on VHS from Gorgon, which is fairly rare. If you see the creepy Medusa head come on the screen, you got yourself a Gorgon VHS! Gorgon is better known for their exploitative series “Faces of Death.” Also an alternate title that some foreign distributors have used is “Witch Bitch.”
The story is basically a man named Michael (William Bumiller) owns his own health gym spa. After a while,...

Producer Jeff Monahan gave Fango the word on the tales contained within Deadtime Stories Volume 2. The second in the series of George A. Romero-presented anthologies recently wrapped up principal photography.
The first in the new trilogy of terror is “Quota,” directed by Matt Walsh on Pennsylvania locations. “Fifty years ago,” Monahan tells us of the storyline, “two lovers were killed up at Lovers Leap. Deke and Judy are going up there tonight—and what they’re going to do isn’t exactly safe sex.” Tim (Evilution) Colceri stars. In “WeT,” helmed by Death Spa’s Michael Fischa, “a lonely man finds a box buried on the beach, and what’s inside it wants to keep him company.” Monahan himself acts in this segment, along with Kristin Slaysman and Death Ship’s Nick Mancuso. Finally, the Monahan-directed “Valley of the Shadow” is about “a woman and a team of scientists...
