The WonderCon panel for “Gremlins: The Wild Batch,” the upcoming second season of the Max animated series, just got wilder, as we can exclusively report that original “Gremlins” director (and “Wild Batch” executive producer), along with John Glover, who played Daniel Clamp in “Gremlins 2” (and who has a voice role in the new season of the snow), will join the panel, which will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center in Room 207.
Other panelists taking part in the screening and Q&a include “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” showrunner and executive producer Tze Chun, executive producer Brendan Hay and composer Sherri Chung. The panel will include an exclusive screening of a never-before-seen episode, followed by an in-depth discussion of season 2. The second half of season 2 premieres on April 10 exclusively on Max.

As my tastes change and I get a chance to watch more and more movies, largely due to wonderful companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, and Synapse putting out forgotten or lost movies, this also changes what I’m willing to call a Black Sheep. The Howling series is kind of a Black Sheep series in horror. It has 8 films over a 30-year span from 1981 to 2011 and while the first one is typically held in high esteem because of its pedigree, and, well, because its good, there’s a lot to watch and unpack here. You can look at which movie is the black sheep of the series but let’s get even more granular with it. Let’s look at which of the two Howling movies directed by Phillipe Mora deserves the moniker. While the third one has that specific Ozploitation flair to it that admittedly I am an easy mark for,...

Modern scream queen Jenna Ortega has been a part of several iconic franchises, given her roles in Scream, Wednesday, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. If she had her pick to join any franchise she wanted to next, she pointed to the one born from the 1984 horror comedy classic Gremlins.
Per IMDb, Ortega was recently at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) to promote her new film, Death of a Unicorn. Reflecting on the movies she loved as a child, Ortega mentioned Gremlins, the film that garnered a sequel along with an animated prequel series. She also made it clear she wants to join a potential third Gremlins film if one ever gets made.

"You know what I used to love as a kid? Gremlins," Ortega said. "Gremlins, would love... Gremlins 3? 4? I don't know. Call me!"

Jenna Ortega, star of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Wednesday, and 2022's Scream and its sequel, Scream VI, has revealed the next iconic franchise she would love to join, and it's a beloved '80s horror classic. Speaking to IMDb on the SXSW red carpet for the premiere of her new movie, A24's Death of a Unicorn, Ortega shared her hopes of one day sharing the screen with the monstrous Mogwais from the Gremlinsmovies for a feature film revival, which, at this point, is 35 years on from the chaotic creatures last cinematic outing.
The revelation came in a video (below) when Ortega was asked about which mythical creature from her childhood she would like to see have a moment in the spotlight again. Perhaps not the best to be exposed to bright lights, but the actress landed on the scene-stealing furballs from the Gremlins franchise. "You know what I used to love as a kid?...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Jenna Ortega expresses interest in joining another iconic ‘80s horror franchise. The young star of Tim Burton’s recent Beetlejuice sequel has only been acting in films since 2013, but she’s well on her way to becoming a horror icon, boasting a filmography loaded with terrifying titles.
Ortega started her horror journey very early on, appearing in 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, but then stayed away from the genre until 2020’s satirical slasher The Babysitter: Killer Queen. She began truly establishing herself as a scream queen in 2022, starring in the Scream reboot, Studio 666, X and American Carnage. She was back for more meta-horror in 2023’s Scream VI, following that up with 2024’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, her second collaboration with Burton after her star turn as the title character in Netflix’s supernatural series Wednesday.

Director Paul Feig's 2018 thriller "A Simple Favor" feels like it came out a lifetime ago. In some ways it did. The film, which starred Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, was a theatrical hit before the pandemic completely altered cinema as we know it. Now, it's a streaming-dominated landscape. Somewhat ironically, the prevalence of streaming has allowed Feig to reunite Kendrick and Lively for a sequel, made for a streamer, specifically Amazon Prime Video, seven years later. For both better and worse, "Another Simple Favor" is a truly decadent, far more silly, even sexier affair. In some ways, it's the perfect streaming movie.
The sequel picks up several years after the events of the first film and centers on Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick), who is unexpectedly visited by her old friend Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) after being released from prison. They reunite on the beautiful island of Capri, Italy for Emily's...

Robert Picardo is an accomplished singer and actor whose career has lasted 45 years and shows no sign of slowing. He has been performing professionally since he was in college in the mid-1970s, appearing on stage in high-end productions like Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" and singing in his college a cappella choir. After college, he was recognized for his performance in a 1976 production of David Mamet's "Sexual Perversity in Chicago."
His movement to television was natural for a hard-working actor, starting with small roles in notable hit shows. He appeared on two episodes of "Kojak" in 1977 and has never had a "down" period since. He thereafter popped up in "Taxi," "Silver Spoons," "Alice," "Benson," "21 Jump Street," and 15 episodes of "The Wonder Years" as the hard-nosed Coach Cutlip, in addition to dozens of other TV shows that are too plentiful to list here. Hollywood has demonstrated time and again that studios will stop at nothing to construct a franchise around a successful film. If an idea works, it's frivolous to waste time and effort trying to make something novel. It's much easier to explore new avenues within a pre-existing story than to create a new one altogether. Thus, the industry typically pours its resources into these projects. Unsurprisingly, many movie sequels coming in 2025 boast the highest budgets of any other titles.
Even the large majority of the highest-grossing movies of all time are sequels. The bottom line is that these films make money, but they still need to maintain a degree of innovation. Typically, there is already a set path for the story. A franchise like the Infinity Saga particularly benefited from this quality. Other times, all that's necessary is a new character or conflict. On the rarest of occasions, a sequel will...

Horror fans and critics can usually predict when a movie is going to bomb at the box office. Even with a star-studded cast, like Scream 4, some horror movies are doomed from the beginning. Most of the time, movies that tank at the box office are unwanted sequels or movies that are only loved by niche horror audiences.
Horror sequels and remakes already tend to be risky movies at the box office because not all audiences resonate with their originals or only enjoyed the movie subsequently. Some box office bombs later became fan favorites in the eyes of horror fans. House of Wax grossed over $32 million domestically with a $40 million budget but is considered a campy, classic horror movie. It can take some time for horror movies to resonate with audiences, but some horror movies were doomed from the beginning.

Warner Bros is reportedly in the early stages of developing new Goonies and Gremlins films, according to a new report.
The Goonies is a seminal 80s film. About a group of kids hunting for lost treasure, it’s a classic adventure whose popularity shows no signs of abating. Gremlins – technically a Christmas film, for those who enjoy such debates – and its sequel A New Batch are favourites too. The original was controversial on release for being marketed more as a family film than the dark comedy it actually was.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros has a huge number of films on its slate, but hidden among the sequels and reboots which have already been announced is a brief mention of new films in the Goonies and Gremlins franchises. The full quote reads as follows:

‘Gremlins’ is one of the most iconic comedy-horror movies of all time. Directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus, the movie combined dark humor with a holiday setting.
It was a big hit when it was released in 1984, despite criticism for its violent scenes. This led to the creation of the PG-13 movie rating. The success of ‘Gremlins’ also inspired a sequel, ‘Gremlins 2: The New Batch,’ released in 1990.
Now the franchise is set to expand once again as Deadline reports that ‘Gremlins’ movie is in development. The project appears to be part of Warner Bros.’ push to revive beloved franchises, similar to their strategies with ‘Lord of the Rings,’ ‘The Matrix,’ and ‘The Goonies.’
Details about the new ‘Gremlins’ film—whether it’s a sequel, reboot, or prequel—remain sparse. However, its inclusion signals Warner Bros.’ intent to capitalize on nostalgia-driven franchises alongside their auteur-led slate.

Can you believe it’s been 35 years since a Gremlins movie rampaged up on the big screen? That movie was of course Joe Dante’s bonkers 1990 sequel to the 1984 classic, with the franchise more recently returning to life with two seasons of an animated prequel series: “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” in 2022 and follow-up “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” last year.
But is the animated series setting the stage for a return of the Gremlins to live action? According to a new article from Deadline today that takes an expansive look at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s near future plans, a new Gremlins movie may indeed be coming soon.
Deadline’s report details, “Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.

Actor John Capodice, who was probably best known for his roles in movies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and TV shows including Seinfeld and General Hospital, has died at the age of 83. One of those stars who has been seen by millions, even though many may not have his name on the tip of their tongue, Capodice leaves behind a body of work that incorporates over 200 acting credits.
Although Capodice never had that lead role, or long-running stint in a TV show, he certainly made his mark in the industry. That can be seen in the tributes that poured in on social media following the announcement of the actor’s passing. The news of his death was announced in a posting by the Pizzi Funeral Home, which read:

While certainly not without its horror elements, Gremlins has been a beloved Christmas movie for the past four decades. It's just dark enough that it's often recommended as a "gateway horror film" for newcomers to the genre to watch before taking on more mature content, but the original plan was for Gremlins to be much more brutal.
Nosferatu producer Chris Columbus, the screenwriter of the Joe Dante-directed film, addressed what didn't make the final cut from his original script in a new interview with Vanity Fair. He shared how the body count was pretty high, noting how Lynn Peltzer (Frances Lee McCain), Billy's (Zach Galligan) mother, was scripted to be decapitated before later getting her life spared by rewrites. Another planned death was for the dog to actually be viciously killed by the Gremlins rather than harmlessly hung up in Christmas lights.

After 40 years, Gremlins remains one of the darkest Christmas movies, but it would have been much darker if writer Chris Columbus had his way.
While reflecting on his 1984 Joe Dante-helmed holiday horror, Columbus recently said the final cut was “plenty dark” but recalled who died in the original script, whether or not Gizmo turns into a Gremlin and other plot details.
“I think the dad stayed behind and fought the Gremlins, I don’t quite remember if he survived,” he told Vanity Fair. “The mom certainly didn’t. Billy [played by Zach Galligan] ran into the foyer of his house, and his mom’s head came rolling down the stairs. So there were some deaths. And Barney the dog was not so lucky to just be hung up in the Christmas lights. He was actually hung up by his neck and died. We killed the dog!”

While viewers come to light comedy movies to escape the horrors of the world and enjoy a good laugh, some films cannot help but unexpectedly go to dark places. Whether it’s a kids’ comedy that suddenly introduces a shockingly bleak piece of information or laugh-out-loud movies that turn increasingly sinister as the runtime progresses, comedy movies can sometimes be surprisingly disarming. While a certain amount of darkness has its place in every genre, the results can be unnerving when audiences don’t see it coming.
Some of the best light comedy movies ever have sinister subtexts that make the movie unexpectedly dark. Image Source: Warner Bros Gremlins is one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s. The 1984 box office hit masterfully combined fantasy, comedy, and horror. Who could resist Gizmo and the mischievous Gremlins? Produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Chris Columbus, and directed by Joe Dante, the film was in excellent hands. The movie captivated audiences with its perfect mix of humor and scares, making it an instant classic. Gizmo, the adorable Mogwai, quickly became a fan favorite, while the mischievous Gremlins brought both chaos and laughs. Six years later, the sequel Gremlins 2 The New Batch was released. While it was a fun movie, it featured over-the-top comedy and musical numbers that set it apart from the original. The sequel took a more humorous and satirical approach, with memorable scenes that delighted fans. At Comic-Con Liverpool, Gremlins and Gremlins 2 star Zach Galligan shared his thoughts on which Gremlins film he prefers.

Phoebe Cates was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s, but as she hasn't appeared in a movie in a long time, fans wonder what happened to her. Cates was launched to stardom as Linda Barrett in the classic high school comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The scene with Linda at the swimming pool, imagined by her best friend Stacy Hamilton’s brother Brad, has become one of the most iconic moments in movie history. Cates continued to appear in movies regularly throughout the rest of the ‘80s and into the ‘90s, but then she stopped starring in films.
It’s been more than two decades since Cates appeared in a movie, and her last appearance before that was almost another decade prior. Aside from a brief voice role in a video game in 2015, Cates hasn’t worked as an actor in years. It’s tough for actors,...

Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan reveals why his planned movie biopic starring Chris Hemsworth has been scrapped by Netflix. Hogan rose to prominence as part of the WCW and WWF (rebranded to WWE) wrestling franchises in the 80s and 90s, and won multiple wrestling championships. In the early 1990s, Hogan left WWF to pursue an acting career, before being coaxed back to the ring with WCW. A popular yet controversial figure, it seemed only a matter of time before a biopic on the star would be commissioned. Netflix was developing a Hogan biopic, with Chris Hemsworth set to star as the wrestling icon.
However, in an interview with Pdb podcast, Hogan revealed that the project was scrapped due to issues with the contract. He then spoke about how he loved the script and how it was dark. The retired wrestler elaborated that the role could have seen Hemsworth in Oscar contention.

There is only one female gremlin in Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Greta is as memorable as any of the new little monsters introduced in the second Gremlins movie. Gremlins 2: The New Batch had a bit of a resurgence after the hilarious parody sketch by Key & Peele reminded viewers just how off-the-wall the sequel to the classic Christmas horror movie really is. Once again, Gizmo, the mogwai from the first film, gets himself wet and multiplying, though now he's splitting in the Big Apple rather than small town Kingston Falls.
Because Gizmo is at the mercy of a mad scientist, played by the late Christopher Lee, his clones end up drinking his sciency-serums, resulting in hybrid gremlins who take the form of everything from gargoyles to literal animated electricity monsters. That's not even the most bizarre part of the wonderfully campy sequel. That honor belongs to former wrestler...

Cosplay based off Gremlins 2: The New Batch shows off two of the most memorable monsters from the sequel with highly detailed makeup, just in time for Halloween. Despite not being as successful as the original movie, Gremlins 2 is a surprisingly good sequel, developing a cult following over time despite initially bombing at the box office upon release. This is partially due to the personalities of some of the titular monsters involved, with many of them becoming memorable elements of pop culture in the process.

Jordan Peele was first known for the sketch comedy show on Comedy Central called Key and Peele. Surprising everyone, he dropped a social commentary horror thriller called Get Out and demonstrated his talent (and love) for horror. He is now known as one of the most popular modern directors in the world of horror. Jordan Peele's films almost always invoke deep thought from his beautifully crafted scary stories.
Through his great directorial success, Peele quickly became an authoritative figure in the horror world. The following horror films inspired him to add to the genre.

Gremlins is a Joe Dante film that gives audiences cute chaos with the "mogwai" creature by the name of Gizmo. Gizmo unintentionally creates evil versions of himself when he molts due to his owner ignoring explicit instructions for his care.

Director Joe Dante has expressed his surprise that his film The Burbs is set to be turned into a TV show. More here.
Last month, Peacock commissioned a straight-to-series order for a TV adaptation of The Burbs, the 1989 dark comedy that starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. Despite being a worthy film, it’s often eclipsed by other movies from the same era, not least because both Tom Hanks and director Joe Dante both scored bigger hits around the same time.
In fact, nobody seems to be more surprised about the news than Dante himself, with the Gremlins director telling The Hollywood Reporter that, “I think my actual comment was ‘how are they going to make a whole TV series out of that story?’ As opposed to ‘I want to be the one to do it.’”

Joe Dante, the director of cult classics like Gremlins, Innerspace and The 'Burbs, has something to say about the upcoming Peacock series remake of the latter of these movies. The adaptation is set to star Keke Palmer (Nope) and will be executive-produced by Brian Grazer and Seth MacFarlane, but despite having a strong team behind it, Dante seems to have his doubts about the necessity of the project.
The director is currently promoting Gremlins: The Wild Batch, the second part of the Max original animated series (the first season was called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai) based on the iconic characters brought to life in Dante's 1984 feature produced by Steven Spielberg. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he used the opportunity to wish Peacock good luck with their remake of The 'Burbs, but added a small pinch of sarcasm to the end of it.
Good luck to them. Its kind of a one-off story.

Genre favorite Joe Dante hasn’t directed a movie in a decade. Yet, some of his beloved ‘80s movies have found or are finding new lives in the 21st century. With the second season of the Gremlins animated series now out and word coming last month that The ‘Burbs would be getting the small screen treatment from Peacock with Keke Palmer leading, Joe Dante gave his perspective on the projects and how involved — or distant — he will be.
After Gremlins 2: The New Batch proved to be a bomb, the idea of a third ever seeing direct sunlight fizzled out. But with renewed popularity in the series, it’s no surprise chatter of a threequel popped up. But Joe Dante isn’t quite sure he would be behind the camera — or that it should even happen. “That’s up to the audience. The fact is that it’s too big...

Gremlins: The Wild Batch, the follow-up season to Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, began streaming on Max on Oct. 3. In a new clip posted by comicbook.com, it shows the sweet and lovable Gizmo separated from his friends and captured by a Warden who runs things on the island prison, Alcatraz.
The Warden, who is voiced by Will Forte is seemingly excited to have captured the little Mogwai, offering him sustenance, but also keeping him in a cage. Gizmo, along with his friends Sam (Izaac Wang) and Elle (Gabrielle Nevaeh) had just arrived in San Fransisco but didnt quite stick the landing and ended up in the prison.
A big fan of Mogwai, the Warden wants to add him to his collection and gives Gizmo a tour of his office, which shows other animals lining the shelves, to which the Warden says they are his past pets.

Horror writer and director Steven Kostanski, who helmed indie hits like 2016’s “The Void” and 2020’s “Psycho Goreman,” knows his interests don’t always align with what’s trendy for genre fans.
“For years, I’ve been trying to push my fellow filmmaker friends into trying to make some kind of little creature movie,” he says. “It would be great to have little puppets running around torturing people. Who doesn’t want to watch that? Everybody said, ‘Oh, there’s no market for that.’ Everybody talks in terms of, ‘What is the popular thing in horror right now? Is it zombies?’ Nobody ever says, ‘It’s little trouble-making gremlin creatures.'”
Feedback be damned, Kostanski started developing a film in the spirit of genre classics like “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” and “Ghoulies.” The result is “Frankie Freako,” opening Oct. 4 in theaters via Shout! Studios. In the movie, Conor (Conor Sweeney...

Intro: When you’re a hugely successful bodybuilder from a small village in Austria, and you’ve not only managed to successfully make the transition from pumping iron to pumping lead pipes into Aussie bad guys, the world is seemingly very much your oyster. Gremlins is back with a new batch of episodes that promises to take Max’s animated series in unique directions.
The show’s second season, titled Gremlins: The Wild Batch, debuts on the streamer Oct. 3. Executive producer Brendan Hay tells The Hollywood Reporter that the show’s team followed the lead of how filmmaker Joe Dante evolved the story from 1984’s original Gremlins movie to the 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch. The Gremlins franchise has always been a small one, with just two movies to its credit for decades. Both have become classics in their own right, with the first being an indelible piece of 1980s nostalgia, while the second is a cult-favorite send-up of the marketing forces that created the first. The recent success of the Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai streaming series confirms that the fan base is loyal. Despite that, however, the franchise hasn't seen the kind of legacy sequels and projects enjoyed by other era classics such as Ghostbusters and The Karate Kid.
It's not for a lack of effort. Gremlins' sterling reputation and legions of fans make it a go-to for Part 3, and Secrets of the Mogwai demonstrates that the franchise still has a lot of untapped storytelling potential. There have been multiple efforts over the years to bring a third Gremlins movie to the big screen.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."
Ever since the first "Beetlejuice" escalated the obsession the ghostly Maitland couple had with Harry Belafonte to them trying to rid their home of the obnoxious Deetz family by making them do a possession lip sync dance number to "Banana Boat (Day-o)," it seemed like a given that a follow-up setpiece had to happen if "Beetlejuice" ever got a sequel. Of course, follow-ups to gags can be tricky, especially in comedy sequels. Some try to go bigger and wilder, such as the climactic news team battle in "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Others try and undercut or subvert the expectation, like when Phoebe Cates' Kate starts delivering a monologue about some trauma that happened to her on Lincoln's birthday and is cut off in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." Others still merely pick up where the bit left off in the first film,...
