Gene “Groove” Allen, a New York City rapper of the 1980s-’90s trio Groove B. Chill who went on to appear in the 1990 movie House Party and 1993’s What’s Love Got To Do With It, died Wednesday at his home in Maryland.

The news was announced by family members to TMZ, which reported his age as 62. An IMdB bio indicates he was 60.

A native of Long Island, New York, Allen, along with Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Belal “DJ Belal” Miller, started rapping as part of the 1980s New York group The Uptown Crew before the three branched out to form their own trio Groove B. Chill. Though they released only one studio album, 1990’s Starting From Zero, the trio gained wider visibility when they appeared as characters in the 1990 film House Party. Allen and Mitchell returned the following year for House Party 2.

Ahead of the Oscar nominations being unveiled, USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the Adobe Foundation have released a new edition of their Inclusion List, with a focus on movies.

The top-scoring movies for supporting gender inclusion on screen and behind the cameras were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. For race and ethnicity, the top-scoring movies were Joy Ride, A Thousand and One, The Color Purple, House Party and The Blackening.

In an earlier Inclusions List, 476 theatrically released movies from 2019 to 2023 were analyzed, with on screen and behind-the-camera data used to determine the 150 most inclusive films in that four-year period. The latest Inclusion List builds on that ranking with a new set of films from 2023.

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.

The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.

“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

The second iteration of The Inclusion List from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023, adding to its initial class of 100 films by naming 50 new titles for the year 2023.

Four films from that year have made it into the Top 10 Most Inclusive Films for that timespan, according to the study released Wednesday, with A Thousand and One taking the No. 2 spot overall, Bottoms coming in seventh, The Color Purple ninth and The Blackening in 10th.

The list’s point system took into account talent both in front of and behind the camera, with a total of 20 points broken down into 10-point halves for both on-screen and off-screen inclusion. Two distinct processes were used, one for leads/co-leads and the other for all speaking characters. A film could earn up to 10 points for on-screen inclusion based on the five inclusion indicators across leads/co leads (up to 5 points) and all speaking characters (up to 5 points).

A Thousand and One ranks second with a score of 13.6/20, while Bottoms scores a 12.2/20. The Color Purple and The Blackening are tied with a score of 11.8/20. The highest scoring film on the list remains Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (2022) with a 15/20.

The list also evaluated 2023 films displaying the best inclusivity across five categories: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age. It named five of the most inclusive 2023 films within each of those categories.

The 2023 films that scored the highest for the gender indicator of inclusion were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. A Thousand and One also scored high on the race/ethnicity list alongside 2023’s Joy Ride, The Color Purple, The Blackening and House Party. In the LGBTQ+ category, the top five films of 2023 were All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin and Saltburn. 2023 releases ranking high in the disability category included What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, Moving On, Golda and The Holdovers. Films from 2023 that scored highest in their representation of age on the big screen were Moving On, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, The Miracle Club and Golda.

Researchers also took into consideration the race and ethnicity of crew members in the roles of director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, production designer, costume designer, casting director and assistant director.

The second Inclusion List also names 25 top achievers across inclusion metrics and 50 new winners for 2023 cinema. Released Jan. 22, the results calls attention to directors, editors and distributors involved in projects with the highest percentage of women and people of color employees who aided in the process of production from start to finish line.

Out of 400 evaluated directors, five were named the most inclusive: Catherine Hardwicke, Olivia Wilde, Destin Daniel Cretton, Reinaldo Marcus Green and Kasi Lemmons.

Eight editors were noted for their work in film over the past five years, including Annette Davey, Anne McCabe, Blair McClendon, Catrin Hedström, Hilda Rasula, Harry Yoon, Mary Jo Markey.

The top distributors — companies responsible for bringing top-ranking diverse films to audiences — were listed by the quantity of how many films released: Universal (29), Sony Pictures (21), Warner Bros (18) and, for smaller distributors, A24 (14), MGM (10) and Bleecker Street (9).

Andrew Santino — the comedian, actor and host of podcasts “Whiskey Ginger” and “Bad Friends” with Bobby Lee — has set his next stand-up special at Hulu.

The comedy hour will be executive produced by Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions banner. Tim Allen is heading back into the world of sitcoms with his next big project. He's attached to an ABC comedy series pilot that's in the works, and the latest casting will reunite the actor with a Galaxy Quest star.

Per Variety, another casting has been revealed for the pilot, titled Shifting Gears. Actor Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, who previously co-starred with Allen in the sci-fi comedy movie Galaxy Quest, has been cast as Ed, a former marine and mechanic who works at a shop owned by Allen's character. Mitchell's character is expected to be featured as a series regular if ABC orders the pilot to series. It has also been reported that the pilot will also star Kat Dennings (WandaVision) and Froy Gutierrez (Hocus Pocus 2), respectively as the daughter and son of Allen's character.

The ABC comedy pilot “Shifting Gears” has cast Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Froy Gutierrez, Variety has learned exclusively.

The pair join previously announced series leads Tim Allen and Kat Dennings in the multi-cam comedy, which was originally ordered to pilot at ABC back in March.

In the show, “Matt (Allen) is the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins,” per the official logline.

Mitchell will star as Ed, described as “a former Marine. He’s a mechanic at the shop and ‘work husband’ of Frankie.” The role of Frankie has yet to be cast. Gutierrez will star as Nick, said to be “Matt’s son and Riley’s younger brother. He’s a game coder but put his life on hold to come home and help his father at the shop.

This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

A family of murderous sideshow performers traverse the harsh conditions of Depression-era America in a bloody deal with the Devil.

Neel Nanda, a stand-up comedian of Indian descent, who appeared on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ and ‘Comedy Central’s Adam Devine’s House Party’, has died at the age of 32. “I (am) deeply shocked and saddened by this,” Nanda’s manager Greg Weiss said in a December 24 statement to Deadline.

“He was a wonderful comic, but a better person. He had the world in front of him.”

A cause of death has yet to be shared publicly.

As news of Nanda’s passing emerged, many fans, friends and fellow stars took to social media to pay tribute.

“Rip Neel Nanda,” Matt Rife wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“You were one of the nicest, hardest working comedians I’ve ever called a friend and i hope you can be at peace brother.”

Fellow comedian Mario Adrion, who recently performed alongside Nanda, also penned a gut-wrenching message to his friend.

Neel Nanda, a stand-up comedian perhaps best known for his appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Comedy Central’s Adam Devine’s House Party, has died, his manager Greg Weiss confirmed to Deadline. The cause of death is not immediately known. He was 34.

“I [am] deeply shocked and saddened by this. He was a wonderful comic, but a better person,” Weiss said in a statement. “He had the world in front of him,” Weiss added, noting he was fully booked with appearances throughout January and February.

The Port Comedy Club in Baltimore was among the first to pay tribute to Nanda on social media.

Rapper/actor Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi can currently be seen on the big screen in the latest John Woo action film Silent Night, and now Deadline has reported that Mescudi has lined up his next acting project: he will be starring in and producing the animated monster movie Slime.

Slime will mark the feature directorial debut of animator / Baby Demon creator Jeron Braxton, who’s working from a screenplay written by The Boondocks‘ Brian Ash. With HBO Max turning into Max, Warner Bros. Discovery is introducing a higher-priced plan — $19.99 per month — with an expanded bouquet of 4K Ultra HD content aimed at pushing customers to the pricier package.

On Monday, the company announced that the 4K tier will feature more than 1,000 films and episodes in 4K Uhd, an increase of nearly eightfold over what has been available in HBO Max.

The 4K Uhd content on Max will include “Game of Thrones,” “The House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” the Harry Potter films, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy, the Matrix films and more. Additionally, all Warner Bros. movies released this year and going forward will be available in 4K Uhd when they arrive on Max following their theatrical windows.

Warner Bros. Discovery, continuing its newfound status as entertainment ecosystem disruptor, announced several theatrical release date changes this week, with DC Comics sequel “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” moving its Christmas 2022 date to March 17, 2o23. It replaces “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which will now open on December 25, 2023.

“Shazam” director David F. Sandberg tweeted that the reason his film’s delay wasn’t the studio; it was “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which gobbled up the IMAX screens in December. (Wbd didn’t see that coming?) All in, it’s probably a win for “Aquaman;” the FX could probably use the extra nine months and it gets a higher-profile new date.

For now, however, the release calendar lost what would probably have been the second-highest grossing film released in December. It also suggests a problem for all releases calendars of Christmas future: More films require more IMAX screens.

In the course of 12 tweets Thursday, Batgirl actress Ivory Aquino, who plays Alysia Yeoh, Barbara Gordon’s roommate and the first major trans character in a live-action DC movie, expressed her grief to Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav over the studio’s cancellation of the film, and pleaded with him to “Consider releasing Batgirl.”

However, despite news of rumored screenings on the Warner Bros lot, which some close to the film are baffled by, we hear that a decision to revive Batgirl is unlikely. Warner Bros Discovery has already written the production, budgeted at roughly 80 million, off its books, and for the studio to turn around and sink more millions into it is impossible from all accounting maneuvers.

In speaking with those close to the film about those on-the-lot screenings, some were jarred: They didn’t get an invite, not to mention the film has no VFX, no music track.

As of late, the fate of the DC Extended Universe (among many other things) has been in peril thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. However, the latest news is relatively tame considering what has happened to projects like "Batgirl," "Batman: Caped Crusader," and "Aquaman: King of Atlantis."

According to Deadline, James Wan's "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" requires additional time in post-production, likely due to the recent reshoots, so the highly anticipated sequel's release date has been pushed back yet again to a December 25, 2023 release date, after previously being set for a March 2023 release. Christmas has proven to be profitable for the monarch of the seven seas as the character's 2018 solo outing starring Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II collected 335.1 million at the domestic box office and became one of two DC films to gross 1 billion worldwide.

Warner Bros. is mixing up the DC release calendar once again.

After the “Aquaman” sequel was pushed back from December 16, 2022 to March 17, 2023, the DC installment is getting shifted once more to December 25, 2023. That’s the same release window as its initial December 2022 premiere date, following the 2018 holiday debut of the first film.

Now in the DC shuffle, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” will take over the vacant “Aquaman 2” premiere date, this time delayed until March 17, 2023, after being first announced to open on December 16 of this year (the original “Aquaman” sequel date).

In addition to the DC game of musical chairs, two HBO Max titles are now getting theatrical premieres: “House Party” is set for December 9, 2022, while “Evil Dead Rise” will open on April 21, 2023. Upcoming Warner Bros. titles also now include “The Nun 2,” as part of “The Conjuring” franchise, set for September 8, 2023, along with Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot...

As Warner Bros. shifts a number of its blockbuster release dates around, it looks like the Evil Dead are once again set to hit our screens. Originally an HBO Max exclusive, Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment in the campy horror franchise, will now premiere exclusively in theaters on April 21, 2023. Starring Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, and Mia Challis, the Lee Cronin-directed and Bruce Campbell-produced flick is one of two films that will move to theatrical-only releases, alongside New Line Cinema's remake of House Party, opening December 9.

It looks like it will be over a year before Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) returns to Atlantis. Deadline has reported that Warner Bros. has pushed the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom back by quite a bit. The Aquaman sequel was originally slated to hit theaters on March 17, 2023, but has now been moved to December 25, 2023.

With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom being pushed back, its original release date will be filled by Shazam: Fury of the Gods. The David F. Sandberg movie was supposed to hit theaters on December 21st, but will now fill Aquaman‘s old date of March 17, 2023. This shift will move the Shazam sequel away from the release of Avatar: The Way of Water and allow it to have access to the IMAX screens that were going to be taken up by the James Cameron movie.

Warner Bros. announced a slew of release date changes on Wednesday, pushing the “Aquaman” follow-up from March 17, 2023 to Dec. 25, 2023. In a blow to the fall box office calendar, Warner Bros. announced that the DC blockbuster “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” will be pushed back from a December 2022 release to March 2023, taking a slot that once belonged to “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which will be pushed back to Christmas Day 2023.

The staggering decision to scrap “Batgirl” leads a growing list of HBO Max titles audiences may never see thanks to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.

On Monday, Deadline broke the news that six more movies and series would not go forward at the streaming service, notably including “Batman: Caped Crusader” from Matt Reeves, who despite the change just cut a multi-year film deal with Warner Bros.

The animated DC series is expected to continue production and possibly stream elsewhere, per Borys Kit for The Hollywood Reporter. But not all of the impacted projects can be so lucky.

“The movie is practically finished and turned out beautifully,” lamented “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt” co-writer Tony Cervone in an Instagram post made when the film’s cancellation was first announced along with “Batgirl” in early August. “I am heartbroken,” he continued.

Warner Bros. Discovery has killed its 78 million Batgirl movie six months after it wrapped production. Adding insult to injury, the film’s cast members didn’t receive a heads up and were “blindsided,” sources say.

The DC Extended Universe film that stars In the Heights’ Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl, was poised to stream on HBO Max or receive a theatrical release. In a shocking turn of events, it will get neither and is being shelved altogether.

The fallout from the surprise shelving of DC’s “Batgirl” continues, as at least six different movies billed as Max Original films have been quietly removed from HBO Max in recent days.

Some eagle-eyed Reddit viewers were first to notice the absence of the titles, all of which were exclusively released for streaming and skipped theaters. Those movies include the Anne Hathaway films “The Witches” and “Locked Down,” the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Superintelligence,” the Seth Rogen comedy “An American Pickle,” the Dylan Sprouse sci-fi romance “Moonshot” and the Sundance drama “Charm City Kings.”

Additionally, a remake of “House Party” from LeBron James’ Springhill Entertainment that was originally meant to debut on HBO Max on July 28 did not launch and was scrubbed from the release calendar.
