Action fans have plenty of choices when it comes to Christmas viewing. You can watch John McClane take down bad guys at Nakatomi Plaza and Dulles International Airport in Die Hard and Die Hard 2; root for Rambo as he destroys a small town in First Blood; thrill at the sight of Marion “Cobra” Cobretti taking on the Night Slasher; see James Bond deal with love, loss, and Blofeld in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; have a Shane Black marathon, starting with the Martin Riggs / Roger Murtaugh pairing Lethal Weapon; watch Houston police officer Jack Caine battle an extraterrestrial drug dealer in I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel); take in a viewing of Batman Returns… the list goes on and on. Christmas has long been a favorite setting for action movie directors, as there’s something about the juxtaposition of holiday cheer against the hardcore violence of an R-rated action movie that makes the whole thing too tempting an opportunity to pass up. Indeed, there have been some Christmas action movie classics (many of which are written by Shane Black), which we dug into here, but now the time has come for you folks to have your say. I Come in Peace… You Go in Pieces!

So goes one of the coolest one-liners I have ever heard, and it’s part of one of the most unheralded Christmas action movies ever. Now, Christmas action movies have always been a thing. Something about the juxtaposition of the holidays and ultra-violent action has always been irresistible to Hollywood. In movies like First Blood and To Live and Die in LA, the holiday theme makes the desperately violent scenario all the more grim. At the same time, other classics like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard ultimately have Christmas messages about friendship and family that come through just as strongly as in a straight-up Christmas movie like It’s a Wonderful Life.

The Christmas holiday season is the perfect time to unwind with family, share gifts, eat your body weight in Turkey, and feast your eyes on as many movies as possible. There's always something on at the cinema that's perfect escapism during the holidays, and the streaming services will also be churning out their latest Christmas offering, like Dwayne Johnson's Red One. However, audiences also get movies with star actors who are not usually associated with festive films.

Earlier this week, we caught word that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a new entry in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise – which is no surprise, since the Jurassics and Fast & Furious are the studio’s two big moneymakers. What’s interesting about this new sequel is the fact that the screenplay is being written by David Koepp, who previously wrote the original Jurassic Park and its follow-up The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Now paleontologist and evolutionary biologist Steve Brusatte has taken to social media to confirm that the project is moving forward – and he knows, because it’s so far along that he has already signed on to be the dinosaur expert consultant on it. Great horror movies often receive low critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, even when they are undeserving of it. Critics overlook the genre's artistic value. Underrated horror movies like The Tall Man and Lake Placid suffer from low Rotten Tomatoes ratings, despite their clever premises and success with audiences. Exclusive: NBCU streamer Peacock is growing its slate of stand-up specials with a new laugher from A Simple Wedding and Superior Donuts actor Maz Jobrani.

The comedian is bringing his Pandemic Warrior special to the service exclusively from January 28.

The special was filmed in Dubai in 2019 and features Jobrani tackling topics such as politics, parenting and social issues. He has added bonus material from his days under the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

Jobrani was born in Iran and relocated to Tiburon in the San Francisco Bay Area after his family was forced to flee during the Islamic revolution. Ultimate Justice follows a group of Special Forces operatives who come back together for one last mission when the family of one of their own is threatened. The film starts out with a flashback to Commander Hans Sturm and his team of soldiers, led by Mark Dacascos’ Gus, performing their very last mission. You see their team takes casualties and Gus decides it’s time to end the security teams days and sell the company, Vme, and retire. Jump forward eight years and Strum is now married with a wife and child, living in a huge mansion. One night his home is attacked, his wife raped and killed, and his daughter kidnapped.

The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) was an unpopular thriller with a clever premise. Laura would have visions whenever a killer attacked someone, and she witnessed the murders through his eyes. Naturally, TV had to take a crack at the premise, which brought us Mind Over Murder (1979), a thriller that adds a few wrinkles to the basic premise and ends up being the more enjoyable of the two.

Originally airing on October 23rd as part of The CBS Tuesday Night Movies, Mind Over Murder bore down against NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies and ABC’s Three’s Company/Taxi/Hart to Hart lineup. Not hard to tell where the majority of viewers planted their eyeballs this night, but those who stayed with “the eye” were treated to a mostly effective thriller with some genuinely unsettling moments. You shouldn’t have too much Tripper in your diet, after all.

The zeitgeist of one of the 80s more insane buddy cop flicks.

Buddy cop movies are plentiful to be sure, in fact, when The Hidden was released in 1987, it wasn’t even the biggest buddy cop flick of the year. Ironically, The Hidden costar Michael Nouri turned down the role of Detective Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon to star in this sci-fi actioner about an alien inhabiting the bodies of various law-abiding citizens and using their bodies as vessels to engage in brazen crime sprees.

If that synopsis doesn’t grab you, then you really should start evaluating your cinematic perspectives. To those of you who hear that logline and immediately begin prepping your The Hidden/I Come in Peace double feature, bravo. You’ll probably glean a lot from this week’s episode of the Junkfood Cinema podcast.

So while I won’t stand on ceremony, I will watch, with fascination, films that trot out such pageantry. One of my favorites is a two part TV mini-series, The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978). Oh, and its horror, but I’m sure you already guessed that.

Originally airing on NBC Monday, January 23rd (in the NBC Monday Night at the Movies slot) and Tuesday the 24th, 1978, Dark Secret was up against the CBS juggernaut of M*A*S*H/One Day at a Time/Lou Grant. But while many were watching Hawkeye, Schneider, et al crack wise, something insidious was brewing over at The Peacock.

Earlier this week, news broke that Russell Crowe was in discussions to join The Mummy as the classic literary character with a dual personality. Shedding some light on the matter is Crowe himself, who confirmed his involvement while on the press rounds for his new film, The Nice Guys.

Speaking with Collider, Crowe had this to say when asked if he is “officially” on board The Mummy:

“Yeah, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna play Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fellow of the Royal Society. It’s very interesting, what they’re gonna do with that stuff. I’ve had a couple of chats about it with the director (Alex Kurtzman).”

Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.

But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. After the film finished, writer and director John Maclean acknowledged how surreal it felt to be premiering a western at Sundance of all places. After all, John Ford filmed many of his classics in the state of Utah, making it a sort of mecca of westerns. It calls to mind other revisionist westerns from this century such as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Proposition and Red Hill. The holiday shopping season is officially upon us, and that means it's time to take a look back at the last year of Blu-ray releases to help you decide which packages will have the horror fans on your list grinning from ear-to-ear!

With the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 3, and really cheap standalone players all Blu-ray ready, there's never been a better time to make that jump into high definition. Before we get into my picks, let's take a second to explain how I rated them. They're broken down into three categories:

Can't Miss -- Must Haves: These are the cream of the crop!

Eve of Destruction is another one of these early nineties movies, that’s actually a leftover eighties movie in disguise. Scream Factory is almost specializing in this type of movie at this juncture. It’s actually pretty familiar to their Blu-ray release of I Come In Peace. It’s an obscure enough title that virtually no behind-the-scenes footage or any kind of footage that could use used as supplemental material for the disc is in existence, but the fact that it has been released to Blu-ray is an impressive enough accomplishment. I’m not going to sit here, like some would do, and exclaim that Eve of Destruction has always been my favorite movie. In fact, I think I had only seen it twice prior to my Blu-ray viewing. Back in the early days of HBO and Cinemax, of course. But, I did have fond memories of the times that I did see it.

Another John Carpenter film receiving the collector’s edition treatment courtesy of Scream Factory, means that I’m going to mention yet again, that in the year 2012, we conducted a year long retrospective series, examining Carpenter’s career in chronological order. If you missed out on the first run of this series, you can play catch up by following this link. Don’t get me wrong, Scream Factory does a fantastic job at supplying extra features on their discs, but this would make the perfect companion piece to any new release Carpenter Blu-rays you decide to pick up. It’s not just movie reviews, it’s an examination of his career as a whole. That being said, Body Bags is one of my least favorite Carpenter films. Most of the time, though, even the few bad Carpenter films have some redeeming qualities, and Body Bags is no exception to that rule.

The first couple of years during the nineties were filled with movies that were inarguably left over from the eighties. There were sequels to films from the eighties that would become franchises, such as Die Hard 2, but there were also movies like Men At Work, which I’ve always considered an eighties movie, despite the fact that it was released in the year 1990. And then, you have a film like Dark Angel, known stateside as I Come In Peace. Dark Angel takes all of the elements of genre greats of the eighties, and mashes them together in one bad ass Science Fiction romp, with Dolph Lundgren and Brian Benben(Dream On!) as your pilot and navigator, respectively. It took so long for this film to be released on DVD, that I never thought possible that one day, I would be sitting up at three in the morning one Saturday night,...

 

Scream Factory is just unstoppable this year, with another batch of summer Blu-ray/DVD titles in the pipe. This August, they're rolling out four more cult & horror titles: a double-feature set of obscure slasher X-Ray with the twisty giallo Schizoid; Larry Cohen's comic monster flick Q: The Winged Serpent; and alien action-thriller Dark Angel.
