“Reasonable Doubt” has cast Joseph Sikora as a series regular for its upcoming third season, Variety has learned.
Sikora will appear in Season 3 of the Onyx Collective series as Bill Sterling. The character is described as “Jax’s (Emayatzy Corinealdi) coworker at her firm Binder, Hurwitz & Stewart. Bill started his law career later in life after serving as a Coast Guard for ten years. As he is looking to make partner, his proximity to Jax becomes imperative to his success.”
Along with Corinealdi and Sikora, series regulars for Season 3 include McKinley Freeman, Tim Jo and Angela Grovey.
Sikora is best known for his role as Tommy Egan in the hit Starz crime drama “Power,” on which he starred throughout its six-season run. He then led the spinoff series “Power Book IV: Force,” which is ending with its upcoming third season. Sikora’s other TV roles include stints on “Ozark,” Season 1 of “True Detective,...

When Richard Dreyfuss walked onto the Mothership at the end of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” it was just about the first time — and also nearly the last — that a movie hero voluntarily went on any such ride. More familiar notes of terror and disorientation come with the UFO territory of Peter Cilella’s “Descendent.” It has “The Walking Dead’s” Ross Marquand as a working-class Southern Californian whose world comes unglued once he suffers an apparent alien abduction. Occupying the slippery-reality realm of “Jacob’s Ladder,” this effective first feature, debuting at SXSW, limns its protagonist’s unraveling with suspenseful skill.
But those expecting straightforward sci-fi horror may resent the writer-director’s insistence on sticking to an ambiguity, played somewhere between the narrative models of “Communion” and “Mysterious Skin.” Cilella never fully resolves whether our protagonist is, indeed, the victim of extraterrestrial meddling or instead suffering delusions triggered by delayed childhood-trauma memories,...

Dreams are an unusual part of human life and can tell us a lot about what's really going on in people's lives. Thus, it makes sense why so many filmmakers would want to include them in some way or another. Whether it's a prophetic vision or a manifestation of a character's anxieties, dreams can communicate with the audience in a really unique way.
Yet, dreams can sometimes ruin the entire plot of a movie. Fans hate it when the character wakes up and everything they've experienced has all been a dream. However, some films use this idea very carefully and manage to make dreams a key talking point without distracting audiences from the wider plot.

Once considered the most disreputable of screen genres, horror has become so pervasive and popular that it’s not unusual now to see a movie presenting itself as such simply for the sake of commercial insurance. That seems the case with “Rounding,” a well-acted and atmospheric psychological thriller with Namir Smallwood as a medical resident who unravels in his new hospital placement. It’s got enough going on that the shoehorning of horror elements — including an eventual monster — feels gratuitous within a tricky narrative already over-compressed into an hour and a half.

Is there anyone as disappointed in their adaptations as master of horror Clive Barker? Okay, part time Wizard and full-time curmudgeon Alan Moore is probably the most upset at his work being adapted but Clive is a close second. The sad part is that while he has had fewer of his novels or short stories adapted than someone like Stephen King, he has played a part in more of them and been let down more often than not. He also didn’t have a great beginning with film as his first screenplay Transmutations or Underworld he ended up hating. He first adapted his own work with Rawhead Rex in 1986 and hated the end product there too. Other than 1987’s Hellraiser which he wrote and directed, there hasn’t been something that he was disappointed in or was butchered by the studio and he has become a bit jaded. His films...

Psychological horror has a way of getting under viewers' skin that generic horror films are unable to replicate, even with exquisitely placed jumpscares. Some of these films have long-lasting effects that can't be shaken off for days and even weeks. With unnerving suspense and deeply disturbing plots, psychological horror can also feel like a mouse-and-cat chase between the director and the viewers.
From Smile to Speak No Evil to Jacob's Ladder, numerous films of this subgenre have left fans truly terrified. Some of the horror is external, while some comes from within, allowing the story to reach into the audience's minds. Leaning toward the unknown, the most terrifying psychological thrillers make viewers' worst nightmares come true. Leaving the lights on after watching these is highly recommended; the most effective psychological horror movies are not for the faint of heart.

I mention a lot in these video essays about remakes and how they sometimes work but often times don’t. One of the biggest issues I have is that many of the remakes we get are really not needed. I like them but did we really need an updated version of Friday the 13th, Halloween, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Of course not, these are classics for a reason. Those are just the ones that work too, there’s plenty like Jacob’s Ladder, Nightmare on Elm Street, or Poltergeist that run the gamut from boring as hell to offensively bad. Well, in 2024 I’m kind of getting my wish. While something like Fade to Black could get a wonderful update 44 years later and be able to say something new and different, I’m curious what a Street Trash remake will bring to the table. The original is one that was a...

Noted character actor John Capodice reportedly passed away a few days ago. Capodice was known for playing supporting roles in multiple shows and films. On TV, he was best known for his role in Seinfeld as the Laundromat Vic and in General Hospital.
Capodice has been a small but noticeable part of films like Jacob’s Ladder, the Jim Carrey-starrer Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Wall Street. He also played the ill-fated bus driver Bob in the Keanu Reeves-starrer Speed, in which he has a cheerful conversation with Reeves’ character.

Actor John Capodice, who was probably best known for his roles in movies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and TV shows including Seinfeld and General Hospital, has died at the age of 83. One of those stars who has been seen by millions, even though many may not have his name on the tip of their tongue, Capodice leaves behind a body of work that incorporates over 200 acting credits.
Although Capodice never had that lead role, or long-running stint in a TV show, he certainly made his mark in the industry. That can be seen in the tributes that poured in on social media following the announcement of the actor’s passing. The news of his death was announced in a posting by the Pizzi Funeral Home, which read:

“Horror in the 90s sucked!” It’s a phrase we have all heard. We may have even uttered it. While the 70s was a time for grimy experimentation that set the standards for decades to come, and the 80s were the heyday of franchise slashers, the 90s represented something completely different for horror fans. The slasher giants like Halloween and Friday the 13th were petering out and no new horror icons had risen to take their places. In the last few years of the decade, the slasher re-emerged via Scream and gave rise to the more clever, self-referencial horror cycle that carried us into the new millennium, but what about the years before that? Was horror truly the barren wasteland that so often gets moaned about?
No! No, it was not.
The 90s might have seen the deaths of Freddy, Jason and Michael, but it also saw the births of...

The Apple TV+ series Before ended its run today, Dec. 20, 2024, with the back half of the supernatural thriller becoming increasingly intense. Billy Crystal gives a great dramatic performance as a widowed child psychiatrist who becomes dangerously obsessed with the strange case of a young foster child (Jacobi Jupe) and the many creepy coincidences and connections between them. In many ways, Before became a different show (and arguably a much better one) than many people expected after the first two episodes of the series. But as Crystal told MovieWeb, the whole series was almost completely different. "It really started as a whole different show," said Crystal in our interview, explaining:
"It started out as a show called Death Bed, which was about a 100-year-old guy who was working with a gerontologist aid, and he gives him a list of people that he wants to see, and the people then come in and out of his life.

Home Alone endures as the family-friendly Christmas comedy that flipped the script on home invasion movies. Kevin McCallister was also Macaulay Culkin's breakout role; he owned the scenes with co-stars Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci.
Macaulay Culkin said co-star Joe Pesci got carried away while filming Home Alone's culminating scene. Speaking to fans during a Q&a (per The New York Times), Culkin recalled Pesci was so invested in playing the villain. "'He was trying to scare me," Culkin said. "He was like, 'I want to be menacing to this kid.'" While rehearsing a scene with co-star Daniel Stern, Pesci went overboard and actually bit Culkin's finger. "I have a scar," Culkin confirmed. "I saw [Pesci's] face — and I've never, ever seen Joe Pesci actually scared. Because he's like, 'I just bit a kid!'"

I’d say we all have to acknowledge certain directors in the horror genre as undisputedly great. You can rank them however you like but there’s really no argument to be made against Wes, George, John, and Tobe leaving indelible marks on the genre we all love. So much so in fact that I didn’t even have to use their last names for you to know exactly who I’m referring to. While Carpenter is my favorite and I believe his run of quality is better than any of the others listed, Craven has more all-time classics. I’d say Craven has more stinkers too, but I think it’s that disparity that makes stuff like today’s film fall under the radar. While Deadly Friend isn’t as good as The Serpent and the Rainbow, The People Under the Stairs, or Red Eye, it’s certainly better than stuff like Swamp Thing,...

Theres always that strange transition period in horror movies where things can get lost in the shuffle. The 70s and its nihilism broke late in the decade to swerve into masked killers and the slasher genre. That heyday was far shorter than people remember but the late 80s did something similar in transitioning to straight to video smash successes and a crazy number of sequels and adaptations. That well, too, would dry up, and when Wes Craven released Scream in 1996, the landscape would shift to smart slashers and then found footage. The teen slasher era was first with things like Urban Legend, Scream sequels, Disturbing Behavior, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and hell, even Final Destination posits literal death as a slasher villain. These are more along the lines of the top shelf example but one that could qualify for a best horror movie you never saw And...

The actor is referring to the role of streaming platforms and their parent companies, which are becoming more ambitious every minute, making big decisions in the spectrum of film production from what gets produced to what youre able to see.

As every fan knows, The Twilight Zone has a well-earned reputation for both massive entertainment value and incredible artistic integrity. Rod Serling's visionary anthology show often included sharp social criticism alongside groundbreaking experiments in the sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres. Its fifth and final season contains one of the very best installments: Episode 23, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," which is actually a re-edit of one of the greatest short films in history, based on a story by one of literature's finest storytellers.

Dripping with allegories and hidden themes, there are still many fans who want the ending of The Babadook explained. The Babadook's touches on darker aspects of motherhood, loss, grief, and how mental illness can create monsters all on its own. However, the movie ends on a confusing but conclusive note for its titular terror and the family he torments. The story sees single mother Amelia struggle with depression just as her son Samuel becomes obsessed with the horrifying movie monster Mister Babadook, who he fears is real and will come for him.
Eventually, the strange events that happen at home find Amelia resenting her son, who she seems to blame for his father's death without reason. Horror cinema has often turned to other genres to craft unique and fresh takes on fear, from the cosmic horror of Ridley Scott's Alien to Western terrors like S. Craig Zahler's Bone Tomahawk. One of the most overlooked genre mash-ups is the mix of horror and the military, something particularly terrifying when taken to the extremes of warfare. One of the best ways to up the ante on monsters and threats is to pit them against hardened soldiers, showing viewers just how much the villains are a force to be reckoned with.
Due to the deployment of soldiers to some of the worst places on -- or off -- the planet, a good horror movie can push the limits of imagination regarding their threat. Going beyond simple slashers in the woods, these movies turn to aliens, monsters, and hordes of zombies to give their heroes a real challenge.

With a narrative that moves between drama and thriller, Jacob's Ladder is a terrifying experience that hasn't lost its effectiveness as the decades passed, and many consider it to be the scariest "non-horror" film there is.

What’s the difference between a psychological horror and a psychological thriller?
Well, it could be as simple as comparing the style of Stanley Kubrick to that of David Fincher. One is in love with emotional turmoil, and the other paints vivid images of realistic terror.
Psychological horror is not about catch and release — the formula of most horror thrillers. Most horror films you can think of fall into the cozy genres of suspense thriller (Silence of the Lambs), psychological thriller (Jacob’s Ladder), or slasher (The Strangers).
(Warner Bros. (Max screenshot))
You’re outrunning Art the Clown, Michael Myers, or Freddy Krueger when you watch a thriller. When you watch a psychological thriller, you’re figuring out a mystery in real time with the protagonist.
You’re figuring out the horrible truth of your fate, like Grace in The Others, or uncovering a diabolical plot, like in Chris in Get Out.

American Horror Stories season 4 story "Backroom" includes a tight cast of television veterans. The horror anthology series, set within the greater universe of American Horror Story, has been largely focused on stand-alone stories that flesh out the frightening setting. This includes "Backroom," which focuses on a grieving father as he begins to disassociate with reality and find himself in a mysterious plane of existence. These "Backrooms" offer a clue to what really happened to his son Roman, a truth that Daniel doesn't realize he is actively avoiding.
This episode of American Horror Stories season 4 keeps the focus entirely on Daniel and his experiences, bringing audiences along with him into the unsettling realm of the "Backrooms." Initially mundane locations like a shopping market or an empty hallway, the true purpose of this space is steadily revealed to not be some random apparition. Here are the stars of "Backroom," and where audiences...

Of the dozens of Stephen King works that have been adapted to film (both big and small screen), one stands out as not only the best among his, but one of the best films ever made. “The Shawshank Redemption” had its nationwide release on September 23, 1994 and, while audiences at the time didn’t know what to think of this seemingly “dreary” film, it has endured for three decades as a beloved favorite for its messages of hope and friendship. Read on for more about “The Shawshank Redemption’s” 30th anniversary.
“The Shawshank Redemption” follows the 20-year ordeal of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker who is wrongly convicted of killing his wife and her lover, and subsequently encounters all manners of abuse within the prison walls, from corrupt warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton) and brutal prison guard captain Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) to the “Sisters” gang of rapists led by...

For over 15 years, a remake of “The Crow” has been in development with countless directors and stars cycling in and out. A new spin on the stylistically influential comic book movie from 1994 that is mostly remembered for the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee would fall apart just as quickly it would generate heat or a star to coalesce in some way. At various points in time actors like Bradley Cooper, Jason Momoa and Luke Evans were attached to prior iterations of the project. All of them went away.
But now, a new version of “The Crow” finally opens wide courtesy of Lionsgate Friday, with Bill Skarsgård as the doomed title character and pop star FKA Twigs as Shelly, his equally doomed fiancée. The story follows these doomed lovers who are murdered, only for Skarsgård’s character to get a chance at revenge by sacrificing himself, traversing the lands...

The thriller genre is a unique blend of popular dark themes, from the mystery of crime dramas to the terrifying scenarios in horror movies. The genres are often blended, as is the case for recent releases like the horror-thriller Abigail. One necessity of thriller films is the intensity and suspense of the plot, which should bring some feelings of dread and at least moderately realistic terror.
Films like The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en are trademarks of the genre and are considered the best overall. Among the various thriller storylines, there are some that go beyond the standard tone and tropes, displaying some of the most disturbing plots and scenes ever. Movies like the family-centric thriller Frailty and the psychological horror show that is Jacob's Ladder are icons of these unsettling scenarios.

Gege Akutami, the creator of the wildly popular manga Jujutsu Kaisen has added a sudden twist that can potentially alter the story in a new direction. Fans speculate that they dropped a major spoiler through the sequence of Satoru Gojo’s dream, that will ruin Sukuna’s plan in the long run.

For context, Jacob’s Ladder refers to a biblical metaphor that represents the connection between heaven and earth. It is used by angels to ascend and descend while God keeps watch over them. This powerful imagery has deep implications for the series, raising the possibility of supernatural shifts and divine interventions.
The dream implies the workings of cosmic forces, suggesting that the spiritual and physical realms in Jujutsu Kaisen are on the verge of catastrophic collisions.

Directed by Doug Trumbull, 1983 sci-fi thriller Brainstorm could have been deleted as an insurance write-off – but then a London bank intervened.
When Warner Bros announced its plans to effectively delete the films Batgirl, Scoob 2 and Coyote Vs Acme, the reaction was one of outrage. Studios destroying films as a tax write-off is nothing new, however: on the 21st June 1933, the Charlie Chaplin film A Woman Of The Sea (previously called Sea Gulls) was burned on the steps of Chaplin’s own studio. The five witnesses who saw the negative go up in flames then signed a letter confirming that the film had been lost to history.

Tim Robbins played Lt. Sam "Merlin" Wells in Top Gun, stepping in to replace Goose after the latter's death. Robbins makes his role memorable and believable as a pilot, supporting Maverick without stealing the spotlight. Robbins likely didn't return for Top Gun: Maverick due to a principle of avoiding sequels, despite the film's success.
Some people may not remember, but Tim Robbins was in Top Gun, though surprisingly, he didn't return for Top Gun: Maverick. It's hard to describe just how influential Top Gun is in the action drama genre, but if the number of movies like Top Gun that came out after Tony Scott's film is any indication, the movie continues to influence Hollywood decades later. Over 30 years after the original, Top Gun: Maverick came out to worldwide acclaim and a massive box office, proving that the Top Gun brand was as powerful and sensational as ever.

In the summer of 1990, screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin became an overnight success with the release of “Ghost,” a romantic thriller that would go on to become the top-grossing film of the year and earn Rubin an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. At least that’s how it seemed from the outside; the truth is that the 47-year-old filmmaker had been kicking around the industry for decades, working as a TV news editor, film museum curator, and writer-for-hire before “Ghost” (and then “Jacob’s Ladder” a few months later) established him as one of the most original voices in Hollywood cinema.
Rubin tells the story of everything that led up to “Ghost” — and everything that came after — in “It’s Only a Movie,” a book that’s half-show business memoir, half spiritual inquiry detailing his lifelong quest for enlightenment. That quest informs Rubin’s best films — “Brainstorm,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Ghost,” “My...

Jacob's Ladder's dark and puzzling ending has helped it endure as a cult classic in the horror genre. The Vietnam War setting adds depth, with Jacob experiencing trauma from both personal tragedies and hallucinatory visions. Jacob's Ladder's complex narrative blurs reality, leaving viewers questioning what is real as Jacob struggles with Ptsd and mortality.

The same year that he laid the groundwork for a horror revolution with Black Christmas, Bob Clark released Deathdream (also known as Dead of Night). The 1974 horror film is understandably overshadowed by his influential proto-slasher, but it was on Deathdream that the filmmaker honed his skills that would fuel his masterpiece of the genre: a brooding atmosphere, a calculated pace, a subtle score by Carl Zittrer that’s inseparable from the organic sound design, and even the use of a rocking chair to achieve unease.
Deathdream found Clark re-teaming with writer Alan Ormsby and several other cast and crew members from his 1972 film, Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things. While it suffers from minor pacing issues, Deathdream is significantly more well rounded. Jack McGowan’s cinematography is often flat (albeit an improvement over his work on Dead Things), but the budget – still limited but some five times larger than the...

In the late 1980s, Bruce Joel Rubin was a screenwriter with two interesting credits on his resume — “Brainstorm” (1983) and “Deadly Friend” (1986) — and a screenplay (“Jacob’s Ladder”) that everyone in Los Angeles agreed was terrific but which no one at the studios would green light. Rubin’s fortunes and reputation changed seemingly overnight on July 13, 1990, when his romantic thriller “Ghost” opened and became a worldwide smash. A few months later, “Jacob’s Ladder,” which had finally been brought to the screen by director Adrian Lyne, opened as well, and Rubin’s status as one of Hollywood’s top screenwriters was secure.
While “Ghost” ultimately garnered Rubin an Academy Award and went on to become a classic — one of those rare cases where personal expression seamlessly intersected with popular and artistic success — its path to the screen wasn’t always smooth. Since the earliest days of film, horror has been a leading genre for audiences when it comes to fun, delivering a combination of scares, chills, and even laughs. The genre plays into the deepest fears of viewers, bringing them terrors that range from vampires and demons to zombies and masked men with knives or machetes. Although horror is best known today for its big, sprawling franchises, the earlier days of the genre produced a series of brilliant original films.
Horror can cover a diverse range of concepts and themes, with some serving as social commentary, while others exist purely to terrify audiences. Some of the film industry's best careers have been built through the horror genre, whether it's iconic actors getting their big break as monsters or directors revitalizing their careers there. Many of the genre's greatest films come from the older days of Hollywood, and they have endured as the masterpieces that they are.

Even after decades of masked killers armed with increasingly ludicrous weapons, cinemagoers still flock to theaters to experience the raw thrills of watching homicidal maniacs hunt the most dangerous game. And while there’s nothing wrong with filmmakers choosing to rely on tried-and-true formulas when depicting classic cat-and-mouse conflicts, the sheer amount of these movies means that horror fans often find themselves wishing for riskier takes on these familiar ideas.
Thankfully, there are some brave filmmakers out there that use of the basic premise of a slasher as a jumping off point to tell more creative stories. According to The Wrap, Pruitt Taylor-Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent in James Gunn’s Superman. I can’t say that’s who I expected to play Clark Kent’s adoptive human father in the movie, but I’ve always been a big fan of the actor, who has appeared in everything from The X-Files to Deadwood to The Walking Dead.
Pruitt Taylor-Vince will join the long line of actors who have brought Jonathan Kent to life in movies and television, including Glenn Ford in the original Superman movie, John Schneider in Smallville, Kevin Costner in Man of Steel, and many more. As I mentioned above, Taylor-Vince might not feel like the obvious choice for the role, but he’s a true talent and I hope fans give him a chance.

Richard Donner’s The Omen begins June 6, at 6 am in Rome, with the birth of the Antichrist and his adoption into an affluent American family. Damien Thorn’s birth and subsequent reign of terror, preordained by franchise canon, make approaching a prequel to a heralded horror classic a daunting task. Director Arkasha Stevenson makes it look effortless with The First Omen, a masterclass in form matched by its compelling horror and characters.
The First Omen, set in 1971, follows American novitiate Margaret Daino (“Servant” star Nell Tiger Free) as she’s sent to Rome to work in an orphanage before she takes the veil. As Margaret adapts to not just her new vocation but an entirely new country and a city in the throes of unrest, she finds herself drawn to socially withdrawn orphan Carlita (Nicole Sorace). It’s through her bond with and concern for Carlita that Margaret notices something amiss within the convent.

In 1992, comic book writer and artist Todd McFarlane created a new superhero character called Spawn. Five years later, director Mark A.Z. Dippé and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy brought Spawn to the screen in a PG-13 rated movie that didn’t go over well with a lot of fans. There were rumblings of a sequel for years after that, but nothing ever happened. Back around 2005, McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. For nearly twenty years, he has been slowly pushing that project forward… but there is some level of hope that we might finally see the new Spawn sometime in 2025, so we figured we should put together a list of Everything We Know About the Spawn Reboot.

Created by Robert Munic, Power Book IV: Force is the third TV spin-off in the Power universe. Set after the events depicted in the acclaimed Starz original crime drama, the story concerns Tommy Egan, the best friend and business partner of series one protagonist, James St. Patrick, aka Ghost (Omari Hardwick). As James attempts to overcome his drug conviction and distance himself from his past, he is forced to relocate from New York to Chicago and attempts to establish himself in a new city.
With Power Book IV: Force Season 2 wrapping in November 2023 and Starz recently renewing Season 3 for an anticipated 2025 release, now is an ideal time to get familiar with the cast of characters in the acclaimed crime drama. While some well-known characters from the Power universe crossover in the spin-off, Book IV also boasts a new crop of characters that fans of the series will meet for the first time.
