Malian director Souleymane Cissé, the African cinema pioneer who over five decades gained prominence for works infused with deep humanism and political engagement, died on Wednesday. He was 84.

News of Cissé’s death was announced by his daughter, Mariam Cissé. “Papa died today in Bamako. We are all in shock. He dedicated all his life to his country, to cinema and to art,” she said in a statement. The cause of his death has not been specified.

Cissé, who was born in the Malian capital of Bamako and studied film in Moscow, became the first Black African filmmaker to win a prize for a feature film at Cannes in 1987 for “Yeelen” (“The Light”), his drama drawn from Kenyan folk stories about the conflict between a father and son over magic powers.

Kill List director Ben Wheatley is about to television with this autumn’s Generation Z, which Wheatley has written and directed for Channel 4.

According to the British Comedy Guide, the series is a horror satire which pits a group of small-town teenagers (the gen-z of the title) against a horde of toxin-infected, rabid pensioners. It’s a little bit like Rabid Grannies, then, but with a distinctly political, post-austerity, post hope-for-the-future spin.

As the synopsis points out, it’s about “the increasingly stark divisions between generations,” and depicts “a modern Britain at war with itself. Sounds good!

Until now, anyone who wanted to hear live recordings of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at their peak had to settle for the double album 4 Way Street. That record, culled from their 1970 shows, had its charged moments, including one of the earliest live versions of Neil Young’s “Ohio,” the Stephen Stills and Young tradeoffs on “Southern Man” and “Carry On,” and the late David Crosby’s version of “Triad,” his ménage à trois manifesto. The Trigger Point Series 2 premiere reaffirms that Vicky McClure is one of the biggest talents working today. Unfortunately, the rest of the show hasn't improved as much as it could have between seasons. The bomb-disposal thriller makes for dramatic British television, but it's still got many of the writing flaws that made it underwhelming during Series 1.

Series 2 picks up six months after what happened in Trigger Point's first season, and premiere co-writers Daniel Brierly and Simon Ashdown wisely use that gap to do a soft reset. Pretty much everything looks different when McClure's character Lana Washington returns from a tour of duty overseas. But the first two episodes don't know how to balance Lana's adjustment with the latest bomb threat, and so there are great ideas lost amongst others that never land.

The handful of actresses I associate with motherhood include ’80s movie and TV staples Dee Wallace, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon, Joanna Kerns, Judith Light, and Meredith Baxter. They were the ones that comforted me when I was a kid. But when it comes to images of grandmothers, only one woman comes to mind: Maureen Stapleton.

On January 17, 1982, Stapleton was only 55 years old. She had three Academy Award nominations under her belt and was about to receive her fourth. She would win that Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the end of March for her performance as Emma Goldman in Reds. When it comes to horror and sci-fi movies from 1986, there are several milestone titles that always come to mind first: Aliens, The Fly, Blue Velvet, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Manhunter, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, or even Psycho III, just to name a few. But like any great year of cinema, there are always a few underrated gems that get overshadowed along the way and should receive a little extra love. Started out as—Kato, the Kung-Fu fighting sidekick to the Green Hornet in the TV series The Green Hornet (1966).

After that—Lee had a recurring role in the detective series Longstreet before returning to Hong Kong to star in a highly successful trio of films; The Big Boss (1971); the Chinese Connection (1972) and the Way of the Dragon (1972). His first and only Hollywood film was Enter the Dragon (1973). Lee died young and his legend has grown ever since. He is considered by many as the greatest martial arts star in the history of film.

Shannen Doherty became a household name in the early 1990s when Fox teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210 took the world by storm.

The show focused on a group of teens living in the affluent area of Beverly Hills, California and their time together at high school. Twins Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda Walsh (Doherty) arrive from Minnesota, facing a big culture shock and getting involved in a variety of subject matter that broke boundaries at the time.

Chad Allen as a Dexter red shirt in season five?  Why not?  The roster of guest stars for the upcoming season is already looking like a "Hot and Happening" list out of a late '90s copy of People magazine. 

Ok, that's a little mean.  In all fairness, I don't think anyone is expecting new showrunner Chip Johannessen to top John Lithgow's spot last season and there's nothing wrong Julia Stiles, Jonny Lee Miller or Chad  Allen as guest stars.  Some quieter casting is probably a good thing for the show as it matures into its fifth season.  With all the raves for Lithgow, we may have forgetten how another splashy guest star, Jimmy Smits belly flopped into season three. 

And with Dexter focusing on piecing his life back together after Rita's death, there's really no room for a big bad this season.  But there's still work to be...

Having little fashion sense but hard crushes on saucy Amazon Heidi Klum and the sublimely delightful Tim Gunn, it is with great pleasure that I welcome back Runway! As you know from our very own snicks, there are seven delightful gays amongst the seventeen contestants. These, my friends, are good odds.

I’d like to begin by putting a twenty on Mondo to win. Okay, so Gretchen has swept the first two competitions, and our first gay casualty, Nicholas, was auf weidersehen’ed right off the catwalk.

Shannen Doherty has signed for a holiday-themed Hallmark Channel original movie.

The former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star has been cast in "Growing the Big One," which centers on a woman who inherits her debt-ridden family farm and enters a pumpkin-growing contest in hope of avoiding foreclosure. Along the way, she falls in love with her partner in the contest.

The movie has begun production in Vancouver and will premiere in October 2010.

"Growing" is produced by Gbo Films, with Howard Meltzer ("The Brooke Ellison Story"), Jane Goldenring ("Pizza My Heart") and Ted Bauman ("Pictures of Hollis Woods") executive producing. Mark Griffiths ("Our House") is directing from a script by Diane Mettler and Anna Sandor.
