In 1994, the Back to School star applied to become a member of the Academy, after his name was submitted by actor and friend Leonard Gaines. When others expressed surprise at the idea of making Dangerfield a member of the Academy, Gaines believed that he was “doing the Academy a favor” by inviting a huge star like Dangerfield.

As the L.A. Times pointed out at the time, Dangerfield met the criteria to join, with “major parts in at least three theatrical releases to his credit.” He also presented an award at the 1987 Oscars and killed.

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.

M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

M. Emmet Walsh, a veteran character actor who appeared in more than 150 films including “Blade Runner,” “Blood Simple” and “Knives Out” and played Dermot Mulroney’s dad in “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” has died.

His manager Sandy Joseph confirmed that he died Tuesday in Vermont. He was 88.

In Ridley Scott’s 1982 “Blade Runner,” Walsh was Harrison Ford’s LAPD boss, while he played the vicious private detective Loren Visser in the Coen brothers’ directing debut “Blood Simple.” Wearing a sickly yellow suit, Pauline Kael said he was the film’s “only colorful performer. He lays on the loathsomeness, but he gives it a little twirl — a sportiness.”

In the early 1980s, Peters appeared in eight episodes of the popular ABC soap opera as the character Mrs. Whitaker. In an obituary for Peters provided to Variety by her son, her character description reads, “The motherly Mrs. Whitaker dispensed country wisdom from her farm kitchen in Beecher’s Corners, serving as a surrogate mother to Laura Spencer, played by Genie Francis, as the teenager’s story arc saw her fall in love with Luke Spencer, portrayed by Anthony Geary.”

Peters started her acting and singing career as a teenager in coastal New Jersey. In 1955, she appeared on Broadway for the first time as an extra for the play “Inherit the Wind,” later taking on the role of Mrs. Brady in the last months of the show’s production.

Goodbye February, hello March! Prime Video! This month, the Amazon streamer will add dozens of film titles to its library on the first of the month, including 1989’s “Field of Dreams” and “Bull Durham” for those with spring training fever.

For the rest of the month, Prime Video will premiere several of this year’s most anticipated features, including the new “Road House” remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor on March 21. (The original starring Patrick Swayze will also come to the streamer on March 1). John Cena will play make-believe for real in the long-awaited comedy “Ricky Stanicky” opposite Zac Efron, Andrew Santino, Jermaine Fowler. March also brings the second half “Invincible” Season 2, which returned after more than two years this past November.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? I recently argued that the Oscar races for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress are effectively over, explaining five reasons why Bradley Cooper in “Maestro” and Danielle Brooks in “The Color Purple” have those respective categories virtually locked up.

I had been reluctant to call another acting contest, especially one in which there’s already a solid frontrunner. I was truly hoping for some serious suspense, with a major surprise awaiting us at the Academy Awards ceremony in March.

However, it's his role as Rocky Balboa's brother-in-law and best friend Paulie Pennino in the "Rocky" film series that made him a household name and earned him the coveted Oscar nomination. The role allowed Young to not only shine as a complex, gifted performer but also bring his real-life experience as a professional boxer to the screen.

Burt Young, the actor best known for playing Paulie in Rocky, died October 8th in Los Angeles, his daughter confirmed to The New York Times. He was 83 years old.

From Roman Polanski’s Chinatown to The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight, Young — born on April 30th, 1940 in Queens — was known for imbuing fierce characters with a sense of humanity and realism. He entered the Marines as a teenager, and started boxing while in the service. He went on to pursue the sport professionally before, by happenstance, meeting the celebrated acting teacher Lee Strasberg, who he later studied with.

Young broke out as an actor thanks to Rocky, where he played the best friend of Sylvester Stallone’s titular boxer. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including a nod to Young for Best Supporting Actor.

A brand new “The Boys” spinoff series, the second season of “Wheel of Time” and football highlight a robust lineup of new movies and shows coming to Amazon Prime Video in September. “Gen V,” a spinoff of “The Boys” set at a college, premieres on Sept. 29, while new episodes of “The Wheel of Time” Season 2 are rolling out all month long after the season premiere on Sept. 1.

Thursday Night Football is streaming starting Sept. 14, and a whole host of library movies worth checking out – from “Four Weddings and a Funeral” to “Dracula” to “10 Things I Hate About You” – are now streaming.

There’s also the premiere of the original film “Cassandro” starring Gael Garcia Bernal as a gay wrestler, and the acclaimed drama “A Thousand and One” comes to Prime Video on Sept. 19.
