While many streaming services are shrinking their once vast catalogs of classic films in favor of chasing original content, Tubi is becoming an increasingly attractive option. Although it's a free service, it has a surprisingly well-rounded collection of older films, especially in the horror department. While you may not always be able to find the most recent horror films fresh from their theatrical run (although they do have some newer movies), they have a well-curated selection of offerings that run across several different subgenres.
It doesn't matter whether you're a fan of zombie films, Italian giallo, slashers, or goofy 1980s horror comedies -- Tubi has you covered. And whether you're a horror movie amateur looking to catch up on some classics or a long-standing fan of the genre hoping to find something a little more obscure, there's plenty to catch your eye here. The first C.H.U.D became a culturally relevant movie for multiple reasons and against all odds also worked its way into the greater pop culture zeitgeist. I argued that the first movie doesn’t quite stand the test of time a bit ago and while I stand by that, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it either. C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. is a wild ride of a sequel that certainly didn’t need to exist but is somehow more fun than the predecessor. Its also a better sequel in a franchise that it doesn’t technically exist in! Can’t wait to get into that aspect. Most of you love C.H.U.D. but I’m here to tell you why C.H.U.D. II is a great black sheep that straddles the end of the 80s and start to the 90s. I doubt I’ll sway anyone onto my side of...

Horror streaming channel Nyx UK is set to deliver a packed month of blood-curdling delights this March, including a tribute to the legendary David Cronenberg, a chilling nod to Nosferatu’s 102nd anniversary, and a slate of UK TV premieres. From real-life horrors to cult classics, the channel is gearing up for a month of terror that celebrates both established legends and emerging talent in the genre.
Marking International Women’s Day on March 8, Nyx UK will present the channel premiere of Devanny Pinn’s The Black Mass at 9pm, a harrowing look at the 1978 sorority house attacks committed by Ted Bundy. Pinn’s take on the case shifts the perspective away from the killer, instead focusing on the victims and their horrific ordeal. Following this, at 10:45pm, Nyx will air Luna Wolf’s short film Siren, a psychological horror piece exploring identity and trauma through an unnerving and deeply personal lens.

In addition to Demi Moore taking home a statue for her performance in The Substance, the Screen Actors Guild Awards also celebrated horror in an unexpected way last night.
Prior to Jamie Lee Curtis coming on stage to present an award, the Netflix-streamed live event aired a video package paying tribute to horror’s Scream Queens, featuring clips from a handful of horror movies alongside insights from Curtis, Neve Campbell, and Jenna Ortega.
The video package put the spotlight on classics including Scream, Halloween, Psycho, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, but it also featured clips from deeper cuts including Night of the Demons, Leprechaun, and even Chopping Mall. Other films featured include Poltergeist, Immaculate, Carrie, Friday the 13th, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Next Generation.

In the world of Companion, technologically manufactured romantic partners are so common that “robo-shaming” has entered the lexicon, lest anyone feel judged for the object of their affection. Getting hooked up with one of these mechanical paramours isn’t unlike setting up an iPhone: Upon delivery, you choose its language, adjust its eye color and voice timbre, and even set its intelligence level. Then, beyond mere facial recognition, you establish a Love Link—a relationship history that forms the basis of your partner’s emotional attachment to you.
This is where writer-director Drew Hancock’s film begins, as Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid), playing out their prepackaged “meet cute,” strike up a flirtation in a grocery store, the latter goofily spilling oranges all over the floor, the whole scene feeling like an Albertson’s commercial dreamed up by A.I. Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

1989 was the year director J.R. Bookwalter’s debut feature, the zombie epic The Dead Next Door (which Sam Raimi not-so-secretly had a hand in), made its way out into the world – and it also happens be the year when his follow-up feature, the “dark, splatter-drenched” oddball comic book homage Robot Ninja (watch it Here) was released. Thirty-five years later, Robot Ninja has now received the novelization treatment and the result, Robot Ninja: The Official Novelization by Damien Casey, is now available from Encyclopocalypse Publications! When it comes to cheesy horror movies, there was no decade better than the 1980s. The best films from this era kicked things into absolute hyperdrive as excessive gore, outrageous special effects, and campy, over-the-top performances became the norm. This was a period when filmmakers were experimenting with new types of horror movies as directors paid tribute to classics of the past with incredible homages, carved out new styles that better represented the social and political anxieties of that time, and pushed audiences out of their comfort zone with some truly terrifying films.
The cheesiest horrors of the 1980s included scary slashers that saw serial killers relentlessly pursue their victims, hilarious comedy horrors that featured punk rock brain-eating zombies, or even alien clowns invading Earth. While more serious horrors can make for a terrifying film-viewing experience, when gathered together with a group of friends, a cheesy 1980s horror will usually be the best pick.

Gremlins may have stopped at only 2 movies and a recent animated TV show, but a lot of its imitators went on to make a killing in the sequel market. Sure, we had one offs like Munchies from Roger Corman and Goobers from the mind of Charles Band which should have rightfully stayed one and done but others wanted in on that franchise action. The Gate would have 2 entries as would Hobgoblins. Troll would get a few sequels, kinda, if you want to go down the rabbit hole of strange Italian sequels in name only that are just called that to capitalize on the profits of other movies and Ghoulies would somehow, miraculously, get 4 films although if I’m being honest, I actually enjoy watching that series. Critters also had 4 (initially) but has a much stronger legacy in terms of enjoyment and interesting background including the fact that even though it came out after Gremlins,...

Watching cheesy horror films with friends is a blast as everyone laughs over the films' ridiculous plots. The 1980s was an important decade for horror films where the best, and cheesiest, examples of slasher films and iconic killers were introduced. Many of the cheesiest horror films from the '80s are purposefully comical and pay homage to the greatest creative figures and tropes in horror.
There's comfort found in watching a hair-raising horror movie with others, but a similar community can be just as appreciated for comedy horror films that are beyond ridiculous. Many horror films lack scares but excel in outlandish plots, wild and over-the-top acts of violence, and, especially when it pertains to the '80s, aged special effects. Horror films have yet to wane in popularity, but the genre saw a peak in the '80s.
The decade introduced iconic horror characters and saw a rise in the popularity of slasher films.

Chopping Mall is a cheesy 1980s sci-fi horror movie with fun moments, teenage partying, and deadly laser-firing security robots called Killbots. Re-Animator, a black comedy horror film, follows Dr. Herbert West's experiments with resurrecting the dead, featuring gore and terrifying elements. Brainscan, a science-fiction slasher movie, follows a teen tormented by a video game host urging him to commit real murders, with an early take on virtual reality.

As far as I’m concerned, director Jim Wynorski’s 1986 film Chopping Mall (watch it Here) ranks up there as one of the most entertaining horror movies of the ’80s, which is the decade that brought a lot of my favorite horror movies into the world. It’s also a movie that doesn’t seem to get referenced often enough, and doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves – even if James Wan wants to remake it and Shout Factory TV aired it for 24 hours straight on Black Friday. So I’m glad to see that Chopping Mall is getting some love from the folks at Encyclopocalypse Publications, who have announced that they’re teaming up with Shout Factory and author Brian G. Lara Parker, who played fan-favorite witch Angelique Bouchard on “Dark Shadows,” has died at 84.
Kathryn Leigh Scott, her co-star on the 1960s gothic soap opera, posted the news to Facebook on Monday.
“I have sad news . . . my beautiful, beloved friend Lara Parker passed away Thursday, October 12. I’m heartbroken, as all of us are who knew and loved her,” Scott wrote.
“She graced our lives with her beauty and talent, and we are all richer for having had her in our lives. Family meant more than anything to Lara, and they have wanted these few days since her passing to themselves. Rest in peace, my cherished friend,” Scott concluded.
The actress died in her sleep at her home in Topanga Canyon, her daughter said.

Three horror classics have just landed on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox streaming service, which already is celebrating a massive August that kicked off with the Ghostbusters-inspired Ghastly Brothers.
Richard Attenborough’s Magic (1978) starring Anthony Hopkins and a psychotic ventriloquist dummy is the first of three movies added to Screambox, courtesy of Shout! Factory.
“Written by William Goldman, adapted from the novel he also wrote, Magic revolves around a ventriloquist seeking to renew a relationship with his former high school sweetheart,” Meagan Navarro previously wrote about the classic. “The only problem is that his dummy is the jealous type. That ventriloquist, Corky, is played by Anthony Hopkins. Unlike most killer doll horror movies, Magic favors the psychological, and Hopkins brings intensity to this twisted love story.”
She notes that this movie served as an inspiration for Don Mancini’s original Child’s Play screenplay and is currently celebrating its 45th anniversary!

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. The Rawhead Rex episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1980s were a period of overabundance in culture and films; it’s a period most remember as being colorful, loud, and filled with bright personalities on television and in film. This is an exaggeration created through media for the sake of a glossy reality being depicted. In fact, the 1980s were very… brown. And Rawhead Rex (watch it Here) is basically the cinematic realization, if that makes sense. Let’s explain this:
Most people remember all the colorful fashion, the flashy looks, the pretty people, and horror films like The Monster Squad, Chopping Mall, and even Evil Dead, which were fairly brightly colored horror films with varying levels of the blood being used.

The original Swamp Thing is from 1982; it took seven years to get a sequel, a change of director, and a massive shift in tone. If the first one was very 1980s, this one is 1980s to the max! The sequel to Swamp Thing takes the tongue-in-cheek route all the way to the bank. Or at least all the way to the end credits. For a film that cost $3 million, making less than $300,000 at the box office was abysmal. However, looking back at the film now, it’s a fun ride. Is The Return of Swamp Thing (watch it Here) a perfect film? Far from that. Is it a good movie? Debatable. Is it cheesy? 4 brie cheeses out of 5. How much...

A local priest, however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism,...

Back in 1986, director Jim Wynorski brought us the cult classic Chopping Mall (watch it Here, check out our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? episode on the film Here), which was about the robots that have been tasked with serving as the security guards in a shopping mall going on a killing spree. The original title for that movie was Killbots, and a while back it was announced that Wynorski was going to be directing a new movie called Killbots for Full Moon. It would have nothing to do with Chopping Mall, it was just going to be using that discarded original title. Well, the title plans changed along the way. The Wynorski / Full Moon project is now called Murderbot – and you can watch the trailer in the embed above!
Murderbot is scheduled to be released through the Full Moon Features streaming service on March 31st.

The 1980s were full of robots, lasers, odd fashion choices, and teen films, including the now cult film Chopping Mall (watch it Here). In this 1986 sci-fi film, a group of teenage friends and mall workers end up stuck in the Mall after closing hours when a trio of security robots are deployed for the first time.
In the 80s, anything futuristic or with robots seemed to get greenlit with budgets of varying levels and quality of varying degrees. Some of these films took themselves very seriously, too seriously even. However, Chopping Mall was one of those films with the perfect mixture of low budget, the right talent in front of and behind the cameras, and the right level of seriousness to its content and how it was approached. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it doesn’t go full-on goofy, either. There is a “just right” aspect...

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at one of my personal all-time favorite movies, the 1990 creature feature Tremors (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about Tremors, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Ron Underwood from a screenplay by Brent Maddock and S. S. Wilson (who also share story credit with Underwood), Tremors has the following synopsis: Handymen Val McKee and Earl Bassett are tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada. But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of an eccentric couple, the group fights for survival against giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh.

The impact of George A. Romero’s Dead movies reached far and wide. After 1968’s Night of the Living Dead defined the modern zombie as we know it, 1978’s Dawn of the Dead kick-started zombie cinema in earnest. Not only did it herald a horde of undead movies domestically, the infection spread internationally — although the outbreak took longer to reach some regions than others.
While Italy was first to strike with Lucio Fulci’s Zombie in 1979, Hong Kong wouldn’t get its first zombie movie until two decades later. A zombie film set in a mall, 1998’s Bio Zombie is a direct descendant of Dawn of the Dead. It also draws influence from the original Resident Evil game (which is featured in the film), although the zombie comedy plays more like a Return of the Living Dead sequel by way of early Kevin Smith (think Clerks or Mallrats).
