Horror comedies have been a staple in the genre since the 1980s, with many films finding a cult following years after their release. Night of the Creeps is fresh while cleverly referencing classic films within the horror genre. Parents and Serial Mom follow seemingly ordinary parents with a twisted secret life.
Despite flaws found within many horror comedy flops, a few notable films deserve more attention. Great films that flop at the box office typically fail due to outside factors, but for many horror comedies, the failure is a result of the content within the films. It's not a guarantee that audiences are going to connect with the combination of laughs and terrors. While some underappreciated horror comedies assemble a unique, laughable concept, others seek to be humorous tributes to the great horror films that came before.

The Haunted Comedy is a genre that probably reached its height in the 1940s with movies like Abbott and Costello's Hold that Ghost.
There was another wave of them during the 1980s with Haunted Honeymoon starring Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner, and High Spirits with Steve Guttenberg and Daryl Hannah.
To be clear, a haunted comedy is not the same as the horror comedies of the 90s like the Scream spoofs of the Scary Movie franchise.
Ghost Light is a comedy first, and one that deals with the goofy antics of the theater crowd.
Tempting Fate Review: Mistakes Were Made!
It's through their idiosyncracies and superstitions that the haunting gets explored.
If you didn't know, one of those superstitions is that the play, Macbeth, is cursed. You can't say the title lest the entire production get cursed.
Quoting lines before the production is also verboten, especially when noting the witches incantations.

More than 40 years ago, Gene Wilder starred in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974), which merrily mocked classic horror movies. It became a huge smash and earned an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay by Wilder and Brooks. It was also a reminder that actors sometimes have unexpected literary talents. Wilder quickly turned to directing as well, and while he only returned to horror once more with Haunted Honeymoon, he set an example for actors to come; namely, that their take on...

Earlier this week, we lost one of the world's great sources of laughter, joy, and creative wonder with the passing of Gene Wilder. While Wilder and his endearing benevolence will be sorely missed, his comedic genius will live on through his work, including 1986's Haunted Honeymoon, which will now be released on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber a bit sooner than originally expected.
Blu-ray.com reports that Kino Lorber will release their Haunted Honeymoon Blu-ray on September 6th, bumping it up from its initially scheduled September 27th debut.
Wilder co-wrote, directed, and starred in Haunted Honeymoon alongside his wife, the late, great Gilda Radner. According to Amazon, the special features for the Blu-ray will include trailers, and you can view the cover art and synopsis below.

This week, an icon from movies, comedy, and many of our childhoods passed away: Gene Wilder, the original Willy Wonka, died at age 83 from complications of Alzheimer's. The loss, like so many beloved actors, was felt deeply by many, but when I heard the news, I had a second, happy thought after the initial grief-filled surprise: he's with Gilda now. Gilda Radner was Gene Wilder's third wife - she was married to someone else when they met, and he would marry after her death. On paper, it sounds like the kind of Hollywood marriage you'd read about in every tabloid today - they were married to others before their union and only had a few years of marriage; nothing incredible-sounding. But Gene and Gilda had so much more than a Hollywood marriage; theirs was the meeting of two comic geniuses, of course, but also, the kind of romance that's...

The sad news for fans of film comedy spread like wildfire earlier this week. Here’s the opening paragraph facts from the New York Times:
Gene Wilder, who established himself as one of America’s foremost comic actors with his delightfully neurotic performances in three films directed by Mel Brooks; his eccentric star turn in the family classic “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”; and his winning chemistry with Richard Pryor in the box-office smash “Stir Crazy,” died early Monday morning at his home in Stamford, Conn. He was 83.
A nephew, the filmmaker Jordan Walker-Pearlman, confirmed his death in a statement, saying the cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Mr. Wilder’s rule for comedy was simple: Don’t try to make it funny; try to make it real. “I’m an actor, not a clown,” he said more than once.

What makes a great actor great? When I watch a performance, there are certain things I look for, and the biggest of those things is whether or not the actor is making choices about their work. There are plenty of actors who get through a scene just fine and who deliver their lines nicely and who never ever connect beyond that for me because it doesn’t feel like they’re bringing anything to the process aside from their physical presence. There are certain actors, though, who I am immediately drawn to because you can see how they’re taking the raw material of the script and they’re putting it through their personal filter so that the end result is something the writer couldn’t have imagined, that the director couldn’t have asked for, and that the actor never would have reached on his own. Gene Wilder was one of those actors,...

He brought smiles, laughter, and merry memories to multiple generations, and although his legacy will live on, it is with great sadness that we share the news that Gene Wilder has passed away at the age of 83.
Multiple sources, including THR, report that Wilder died at his home in Stamford, Conn. on Sunday. After fighting Alzheimer’s Disease over the past several years, he passed away while listening to Ella Fitzgerald’s cover of “Somewhere over the Rainbow.”

The iconic Gene Wilder passed away earlier today, at the age of 83, at his home in Stamford, Connecticut. His nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, revealed that the actor died due to complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Like many character actors, David Huddleston's name may not be familiar to movie fans- but they certainly would recognize him, especially if they are retro film fans. Huddleston, who this week at age 85, was a star of stage and screen. He began making feature films in the 1960s and became steadily employed in both low-budget and major Hollywood productions, generally playing folksy, good old boy Southern characters, though he did snag the title role in the 1985 Salkind production of "Santa Claus" as well as the 1998 Coen Brothers cult classic "The Big Lebowski". He scored with audiences for his performance as the foul-mouthed town dignitary in Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" and appeared in "Capricorn One", 'Smokey and the Bandit II", "Haunted Honeymoon" and two films with John Wayne: Howard Hawks' "Rio Lobo...

When it comes to horror and sci-fi movies from 1986, there are several milestone titles that always come to mind first: Aliens, The Fly, Blue Velvet, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Manhunter, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, or even Psycho III, just to name a few. But like any great year of cinema, there are always a few underrated gems that get overshadowed along the way and should receive a little extra love. Here are six films from 1986 that I think deserve to be on every genre fan’s radar:
F/X: A movie about a special effects artist who gets mixed up in a government conspiracy, at a time when practical effects were in their heyday? Yes, please. F/X isn’t a film I hear a ton of folks talk about, but it has been on cable a lot lately, which means I’ve spent a few nights revisiting it,...

"That Justin Theroux guy - where do I know him from?" Depending on whom you ask, you could get a great many answers. Of course, he's the husband of Jennifer Aniston, but he's had a string of notable acting roles too. He could be that guy from The Leftovers, the actor who played the hapless director character in Mulholland Drive, Leslie Knope's short-lived boyfriend on Parks and Recreation, or even the bad guy from Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. However, Theroux is also a screenwriter, and he's credited with a handful of major films that casual movie-goers might not associate with him.

'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. Levy's stage adaptations: Levy and Hubert Griffith's Young Madame Conti (1936), starring Cummings as a demimondaine who falls in love with a villainous character. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Referring to the London production of Young Madame Conti, The...

Ive never been able to decide which hilarious throwback flick I enjoy more Gene Wilders Haunted Honeymoon or Mel Brooks crazefest Young Frankenstein. Theyve both got some great things going for them and Ive been eager to add both to my collection in Bluray format. Haunted Honeymoon is an addition Im going to be forced to wait for. Young Frankenstein however is available on Bluray and a new and rather impressive anniversary release loaded with quality bonus material is finally headed our way next month.

Another film legend has passed on, and though his name may not jump out at you, his contributions to the world of special effects will long be remembered and revered. It's with a heavy heart we report that Stuart Freeborn is no longer with us.
The Associated Press is reporting that Freeborn, a pioneering movie makeup artist behind creatures such as Yoda and Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, has died. He was 98. Within the horror genre Stuart served as chief makeup artist on 1976's The Omen, and he also contributed his genius to 2001: A Space Odyssey, See No Evil, the TV horror film Spectre, the Superman film franchise, and even the hilarious Haunted Honeymoon from 1986.
"He brought with him not only decades of experience, but boundless creative energy," said Star Wars' George Lucas. "His artistry and craftsmanship will live on forever in the characters he created. His...

Get this: Gilda's Club -- the cancer support group named for Gilda Radner, who once claimed that cancer is "an elite club I'd rather not belong to" -- is getting a new name. The reason? People born after 1989 don't know who Gilda Radner is. Uh, interesting: 20-year-olds seem to know who John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd are, but Gilda Radner, arguably the most original and explosive talent in SNL history, slides under the radar? This is unspeakable news in the worst way possible.
Quick, please memorize these six points and tell them to everybody you know who is born in the '90s. This is an important performer for many reasons. Save the advanced knowledge about her Toronto Godspell stint, Second City, Candy Slice, her Baba Wawa impersonation that used to infuriate Barbara Walters, First Family, The Woman In Red, and the failure of Haunted Honeymoon for semi-advanced children.

The premiere of "American Horror Story: Asylum" is one week away (Wed., Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. Et on FX), but luckily, FX is giving fans a look at the first five minutes of the raunchy, scary episode on Facebook.
In the sneak peek, Jenna Dewan (Teresa) and Adam Levine (Leo) are newlyweds on a "Haunted Honeymoon Tour," walking through the "Blair Witch Project"-like woods until they reach Briarcliff Manor. It was the largest tuberculosis ward on the East Coast in the '60s, Teresa reads -- 46,000 people died there.
This might just be the last stop Teresa and Leo ever make, though they plan on telling their kids that on their honeymoon, they visited the "12 most haunted places in America and screwed [their] brains out in every single one," according to Leo.
As the honeymooners make their way through the abandoned building, people are strapped down, sex acts are offered...

For the most part, the days of the classic monster movie are over. Modern moviegoing audiences are simply too sophisticated to quake at the sight of a shambling, dusty old mummy or a be-caped vampire with a distinctive widow's peak and a propensity for pronouncing his w's as v's. The werewolves, vampires, ghosts and zombies ("Frankensteins") of yesteryear still have enormous appeal, but more often as the subjects of parodies or comedies than of horror movies.
The latest movie to use classic monsters for laughs is acclaimed animator and director Genndy Tartakovsky's (Samurai Jack, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) upcoming 3-D family comedy, Hotel Transylvania, which revolves around a secret hotel run by Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) that caters to monsters who want a little getaway from torch-waving humans. The Private Eyes (Original Release Date: 10 April 1981)
Nostalgia bulletproofs some movies to criticism. That's how it is for me, at least. I apologize in advance for the inevitably positive review I will be writing for Legend of the Lone Ranger in May. It is roundly hated by casual moviegoers and Lone Ranger fans alike, and there is little chance of your liking it if you weren't indoctrinated into liking it as a child.
Legend of the Lone Ranger was one of my most frequent babysitters growing up, and I developed a good deal of affection for it. Another sitter was The Private Eyes, though like the sitter who continues to baby talk at you when you feel you’ve outgrown baby talk, The Private Eyes has dimmed in my estimation with time. That old affection is hard to access, even if watching it does produce constant flutters of recognition and memories from childhood.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott just dropped us a line to let you know about his next project before his remake of The Asphyx. Buckle up, kids, and get out those dollar bills! It's time for the showdown of the century - Strippers vs. Werewolves! Oh, how we love our job!
"The script has been written by a very talented guy named Pat Higgins, who has made a string of micro budget genre films in the UK including Hellbride, KillerKiller and Bordello Death Tales," says Sothcott. "His stuff is very stylish, and he's already developed quite a cult following. We'd been chatting about doing something together, and he said he was working on a script called Strippers vs. Werewolves. 'This I must see,' I thought. I read it and absolutely loved it - as a child of the 80s I grew up on Fright Night, Vamp, Once Bitten, The Lost Boys,...

Ian Scoones was a leading British special effects designer who began his career working for Hammer horror films in the early 1960s. He was also frequently involved with the long-running Doctor Who series, and supervised the effects for the first season of the sci-fi series Blakes 7 in 1978.
Scoones was born in London on 1940, and studied painting, photography and set design at the Medway College of Art. He began working in films in the early 1960s, joining Les Bowie’s effects team at Hammer. He was an assistant effects artist on such films as Scream of Fear (1961), Shadow of the Cat (1961), Night Creatures (aka Captain Clegg) (1962), These Are the Damned (aka The Damned) (1963), Kiss of the Vampire (1963), She (1965), Frankenstein Created Woman (1967), The Mummy’s Shroud (1967), and Five Million Years to Earth (aka Quatermass and the Pit) (1967).

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

It has been reported that visual effects designer Ian Scoones has died in Bulgaria where he lived with his wife Anastasia, on 20th January.
Scoones is perhaps best remembered for his work on Doctor Who in the 1970s for Pyramids of Mars, The Invisible Enemy and City of Death, though he had worked on many other stories, including the very first story An Unearthly Child as an uncredited special effects assistant. He was also heavily involved with the first series of Blake's Seven. As well as television, he worked on a number of films, including Quatermass and the Pit, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Haunted Honeymoon.
Having lived in Spain for a number of years he then retired to Bulgaria, but was interviewed by fellow visual effects designer Mat Irvine for the 2008 BBC DVD release The Invisible Enemy, a story he also worked upon.

Comedian Dom Deluise passed away yesterday in Santa Monica, California at the age of 75. Dom Deluise was a man, but his portrayal of the fiesty and over-the-top Aunt Kate in the 1986 classic horror homage Haunted Honeymoon makes this a sad loss for funny women in horror everywhere.
"My brother John, from whom you are all descended, was bitten on the back of his neck by something that was half animal, half human. From that moment on, he was hairy, all over." - Aunt Kate.
In addition to Aunt Kate, Deluise was the monstrous edible Pizza The Hut in Spaceballs, Guilt in an episode of Amazing Stories, Dr. Dudley in the 1960's TV horror series The Munsters, and just finished a cameo in the upcoming horror movie Horrorween...

You saw the snood first: the small head, wrapped in a chic little turban with a few strands of downy hair showing at the crown. She kept her back to the room, always taking the last booth by the ladies’ room. Often, she had been sitting alone for half an hour or an hour, gathering her thoughts, making notes in a small notebook, shaping the senseless events of her life into a story that frequently assumed the power of allegory. She was never late. Over a period of five months,...
