Game of Thrones andHouse of the Dragon have helped popularize a dark fantasy aesthetic characterized by menace-looking warriors in glinting armor, twisted-looking castles, and the return of eerie old magic. To make up for the absence of these TV shows, it's not uncommon for fantasy fans to look into the past for unique fantasy movies, seemingly forgotten in time. After all, the fantasy films from the '80s and '90s directly inspired many elements of modern fantasy movies and TV shows.
Classics like Conan, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and Willow continue to influence popular culture through their bygone style. However, there is still a wealth of other fantasy movies that remain hidden gems. This retro or dark fantasy deserves revisiting by any fan of the genre. The auction house confirmed that an original screen-used model of E.T. from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 sci-fi classic E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial will be offered up along with items from the man who brought the iconic movie character to life, Carlo Rambaldi.
The model comes from the personal collection of the Oscar-winning special effects and makeup effects artist who has a long list of credits on high-profile films like King Kong, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alien, Conan the Destroyer and Dune. Designed and developed in 1981 and standing just over three feet, the E.T. creation was used in the well-known closet scene, which finds the alien attempting to disguise himself among stuffed animals.

Fabulous Films have released Jim Henson’s The Storyteller on DVD.
From the creators of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, this complete collection comprises of all 9 episodes of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller series narrated by John Hurt (The Elephant Man), plus all 4 episodes of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Greek Myths narrated by Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore). Featuring both human actors and creations from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, The Storyteller won 2 BAFTA Awards and 1 Primetime Emmy Award.
Jim Henson’s daughter Lisa studied folklore as an undergraduate at Harvard, and suggested to her father that his creature shop could bring the European folk tales to life. It took 2 years for Academy-Award winning writer/director Anthony Minghella (The English Patient) to write, and perfect the nine original episodes. When it comes to fantasy movies, few films stand above Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This series is, of course, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's masterful writing, and it's spawned so much more than one movie trilogy. Peter Jackson also directed The Hobbit Trilogy. There have also been plenty of video games, comics, and a Prime Video original series called The Rings of Power (2020-Present).
At the end of the day, The Lord of the Rings franchise is a fantasy genre heavy hitter. It's hard to outdo Tolkien's expansive and intricate world-building, but there are plenty of movies out there that give The Lord of the Rings a run for its money. Film is the perfect medium to bring fantasy worlds to life. This list will discuss 10 incredible fantasy movies that any Tolkien fan should take the time to explore.

Cheryl Gates McFadden was a dancer before she was an actress. She studied theater in college (she has a Bachelor of Arts degree) and lived in Paris for a spell, performing with the celebrated movement coach Jacques Lecoq. In New York in the 1970s, she taught dance at various colleges, and formed her own theater troupes and comedy companies. In the 1980s, she landed a few high-profile gigs serving as a choreographer and movement coach on "The Muppets Take Manhattan" and "Labyrinth." She can be seen giving her commentary in a making-of documentary on the "Labyrinth" DVD.
McFadden, however, exploded in popularity in 1987 when she was selected to play Dr. Beverly Crusher, the chief medical officer on board the USS Enterprise on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." McFadden (who was just going by Gates back then) didn't get to do much dancing on "Star Trek," but she was given a mature,...

Labyrinth may be beloved by Jim Henson fans today, but it was a long, hard road for the mostly puppet-based fantasy to achieve cult classic status. Even as someone who's loved the film since childhood, I freely admit it's a bizarre movie: the Fireys creeped me out when I was a kid, the internal logic is a little wonky, and David Bowie is....David Bowie. It's also a weirdly sexual movie, even outside of Bowie's infamously tight pants, which adds another layer of weirdness considering that Jennifer Connelly was only about 14 when playing co-lead Sarah. Perhaps even more shocking is that Labyrinth was not Connelly's first time working with a legendary filmmaker on a film with a very strange premise and style.

Some of the most beloved movies of all time weren’t immediate successes. In fact, some of them downright flopped at the box office when they first hit theaters. But the good news? A lot of those movies take on a second life as deep cuts and cult classics. The 1980s in particular were full of films that struggled to find an audience upon release, only to develop massive cult followings in the years that followed.
From fantasy epics to bizarre horror films, the ‘80s were a breeding ground for misunderstood masterpieces. While critics and audiences might not have appreciated them at the time, these films have found redemption thanks to devoted fans, home video sales, and pop culture reappraisals. From the midnight movie to the cult fave, these films have outlasted many of their more traditionally successful peers.

Muppets creator Jim Henson was delivered a rough hand with two of his most advanced and misunderstood movies. One of these was Labyrinth, and the other was The Dark Crystal. Released in 1982, the film was originally released to mixed reviews and although it did not land as a complete box office disaster, it was by no means a runaway success. Now, the dark fantasy classic has secured the number one spot on Tubi’s free streaming charts.
The Dark Crystal introduces audiences to the mystical world of Thra, where Jen, the last of the Gelflings, is tasked with restoring the balance of the world by retrieving the pieces of the shattered Crystal of Truth. The fragmentation of the crystal has allowed the malevolent Skeksis, a race of vulture-like creatures, to seize control of Thra, and they’ve spread darkness and decay throughout the world. One of the best dinosaur movies of all time secretly destroyed Jim Henson's prehistoric passion project before it ever had the chance to be realized. Less than two months after its theatrical debut, Robert Eggers' Nosferatu has set its streaming release date, and it's sooner than you might think. The best part? An extended cut will also be available to stream, featuring even more footage of Bill Skarsgård's Count Orlok. Debuting on Christmas Day, 2024, the remake of the 1922 German classic managed to pull in $176.5 million at the box office, and was heralded by many as one of the best horror movies of the year.

The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has dealt with some dark subject matter over the course of his career – but the darkest story is yet to come. No, not in his recently announced Labyrinth sequel, but in another recently announced project: the creature feature Werwulf, which he’s making for Focus Features, aiming for a Christmas Day 2026 theatrical release.
Eggers has written the screenplay for Werwulf with Sjón, his co-writer on the Viking saga The Northman. Details are being kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter’s sources told them “the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated to Old English. The best anime are, first and foremost, defined by their most iconic plot lines. Most anime series prefer to split their stories into arcs — standalone narratives that, despite having their own conflicts and resolutions, feed into the overarching plot. Arcs in anime tend to vary in length, relevance, and quality greatly, from essential narratives that directly affect the main plot to filler storylines one could skip without missing out on much.
However, the exceptional arcs that end up carving their shows a place in history stick with audiences long after the credits roll. These incredible plots are regarded as the best part of their respective series for featuring the absolute heights of their narrative glory. And some of the top-tier anime arcs can even be considered the pinnacle of writing not only in the medium but in fiction overall. Bryn Chainey’s “Rabbit Trap,” starring Dev Patel, Rosy McEwen, and Jade Croot, is a three-hander folk horror deeply rooted in Welsh lore and the precarious balance between humans and the natural world. It concerns a couple (Patel and McEwen) living in a remote cottage who suddenly have a strange child (Croot) burrowing into their lives after they disturb a Tylwyth Teg fairy ring.
“You might try to bury something, but something, it’ll grow,” Chainey said of the traumas lurking at the fringes of the new Midnight section thriller. “I grew up loving the illustrations of Brian Froud. He’s the guy that designed ‘The Dark Crystal’ and ‘Labyrinth,’ and he wrote these amazing books about fairies and goblins and pixies, all the folklore of the Celtic part of the U.K.”
“For me as a kid, these things were real, they were just an extension of nature,” Chainey continued.

The Midnight strand at the Sundance Film Festival has come into its own in the last few years, showcasing films that push the increasingly conservative boundaries of genre. One of this year’s offerings — the U.K.-shot Rabbit Trap, written and directed by Bryn Chainey — did that a little too successfully for some. Drawing on ancient folklore, fables and myths, Chainey’s film was branded a ‘folk horror’, a promise the film could not live up to.
Though it is certainly disturbing at times, Rabbit Trap is hard to describe and even harder to put a category to, which is appropriate since the whole film is trying to talk about things that cannot be put into words. It stars Dev Patel as Darcy, who works as a sound engineer for his wife Daphne (Rosy McEwan), who makes experimental music at their home in a remote Welsh cottage. The year...

Robert Eggers, the horror visionary behind films like The Witch and 2024's best vampire movie, Nosferatu, has revealed the reason why all his films are historical pieces that don't take place in current times. Considering his films have been mostly acclaimed, it's not because he hasn't had the opportunity. Eggers is just not interested because of what they imply.
The director spoke to Rotten Tomatoes recently about Nosferatu, and the conversation drifted to his admirable catalog of films. Rt just cut to the chase and asked Eggers if he would be interested in making contemporary films. Per his firm answer:
"The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill. And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it's just how life is — so no."

The feeling of watching the film Rabbit Trap is one that is comparable perhaps only to the first time you hear your favorite song through a pair of actually good headphones. What was once a familiar old friend, is now something new, something different. Where once only silence was heard, now new frequencies and new sonic pathways open up from places that always dwelled under the surface, yet until now had never been accessible to you. Yes, this film is quite a bit like that.
Rabbit Trap is the story of Daphne (Rosy McEwan), an analog synth obsessed avant-garde musician, and her husband, Darcy (Dev Patel), a introverted sound designer who spends his days lugging his audio equipment into the forest to record the sounds of nature at work. Seeking to immerse themselves in both their art and their relationship, the couple decides to sequester themselves in a scaredy populated forest home in Wales.

“The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill,” Eggers said. “And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no [I won’t be making any modern-set films].”
The filmmaker has helmed several projects that have spanned periods from 1630s and 1890s New England to the Viking Era, including 2015’s The Witch, 2019’s The Lighthouse and 2022’s The Northman, respectively. Most recently, Nosferatu, starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård, was set in 1830s Transylvania.
Elsewhere in the interview, Eggers was asked exactly how modern he would potentially go for a project. He responded, “I don’t know. I might go potentially...

Never say never, but Nosferatu filmmaker Robert Eggers is pretty much dead-set on not making a contemporary movie.
The auteur — whose pics have spanned 1630’s and 1890’s New England, the Viking Era (2022’s The Northman) and now 1830’s Transylvania (four-time Oscar-nominated Nosferatu) — said in a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes that the thought of such a project makes him feel “ill.”
“The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill,” he began. “And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no.”
When asked to specify the “ceiling” of which time periods Eggers would fancy traveling to, he answered: “I don’t know. I might go potentially to 1950 but before World War II is more inviting for my imagination.”

It has been a full couple of weeks for Robert Eggers. Nosferatu, his Gothic remake of the 1922 classic, is leading the box office with $156 million so far. A few days ago, cinephiles got word that he's staying in the Universal monster motif with Werwulf coming next. (No relation with the foible-ridden "Dark Universe.")
Now comes the announcement that the cerebral moviemaker is going to make a sequel to the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The film starred the wit and whimsy of Jim Henson, who created a compelling story and fascinating puppets for a fantasy world featuring Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie.
Eggers signed on to direct and co-write with his creative partner Sjón, with whom he collaborated on The Northman. Variety reported Chris and Eleanor Columbus are slated to produce the film with Lisa Henson. Also along for the ride is Jim's son, Brian Henson, who will be executive producing.

Robert Eggers is one of the few directors left in Hollywood making a name for themselves under the old auteur model, where people become interested in their movies because they made them, not because they're tied to some already-established IP. Between The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and now Nosferatu, Eggers has forged his own path and actually succeeded. It's pretty much him and Christopher Nolan holding that particular fort.
And Eggers will continue to blaze new trails with a new movie called Werwulf. He's already covered witches and vampires, so this seems like the next natural step. But Deadline reports that he's signed on to make a sequel to Labyrinth, the 1986 dark fantasy movie starring Jennifer Connelly, David Bowie, and a bunch of Jim Henson puppets.

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth has been in line for a sequel, reboot or remake for several years now, and latest reports have revealed that it may finally be moving forward with Nosferatu director Robert Eggers as both writer and director. While the announcement was greeted with excitement by some – and why not when we are talking about a director who has proven capable of working with both original and often-rinsed material – the idea of “messing” with the ‘80s classic has still generated a strong reaction online.
Labyrinth is one of Jim Henson’s greatest achievements, even if the Muppet creator himself never really got to see just how loved the movie would become after its initial flop release. Starring David Bowie and a host of colorful and memorable puppet creations, Labyrinth is the very definition of a cult classic, and has earned a position as a movie with a solid place in pop culture.

Jeff Sneider recently reported that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers was set to helm a new Labyrinth movie, and while some were quick to dismiss the rumor, it's now been confirmed.
Back in 2020, we got word that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had signed on to helm a sequel to Jim Henson's fantasy classic for Sony-owned studio TriStar Pictures. Updates have pretty much been non-existent since, and we had heard that another filmmaker was being sought for the project - we just didn't expect it to be Eggers!
According to Deadline, Eggers is also set to write the project with frequent collaborator Sjón for TriStar. Producers will include Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus, while Brian Henson will executive produce.

Robert Eggers will tackle the long awaited Labyrinth 2, and it’s now been announced. A bit more information here.
It’s been an exciting week for Robert Eggers. His remake of Nosferatu has been hugely successful, and it was recently confirmed that his next film will be Werwulf, due out at the end of 2026. Even got through the spell checker, that.
But there’s more! According to Deadline, the filmmaker has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures.
The original Labyrinth is a much loved cult classic from 1986. It saw the great Jim Henson direct from a screenplay by Monty Python member Terry Jones.
The story follows sixteen year old Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, who must navigate a treacherous maze in order to save her baby brother from The Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie. Throughout her journey, Sarah encounters...

Thanks to Robert Eggers' vampire film "Nosferatu" and Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance," horror had a surprisingly strong showing at the 2025 Oscar nominations. But instead of resting on his laurels and high-fiving Bill Skarsgård for delivering a gruesomely fresh take on the horror icon Count Orlok, Eggers has already set his sights on a new movie, the excellently-named 13th century werewolf tale "Werwulf." Oh, and if that wasn't enough to keep him working for a while, Deadline reports that he's also now closed a deal with TriStar pictures to co-write and direct a sequel to "Labyrinth."
The original 1986 "Labyrinth" is a marvel. He's conquered the realms of witches (The Witch), vampires (Nosferatu), and very soon will have taken a 13th century set stab at werewolves too (Werwulf), but emerging master of the macabre Robert Eggers has already decided where his watchful eye will be cast next — and we'll bet it's not somewhere you had on your Eggers bingo card. Hot on the heels of scoring four Oscar nominations for his take on F.W. Murnau's Gothic chiller Nosferatu, Deadline is reporting that Eggers has closed a deal to write and direct a sequel to Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy Labyrinth at TriStar.
According to Deadline, the film — which is explicitly stated to be a sequel to rather than a remake of the cult Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie starring classic — is being penned by Eggers alongside Icelandic poet Sjón, his co-writer on both The Northman and the upcoming Werwulf. Robert Eggers is getting very busy. A day after setting up his next film, “Werwulf,” at Focus Features, the director of “Nosferatu” and “The Northman” has closed a deal with TriStar Pictures to direct a sequel to “Labyrinth.”
Released in 1986, “Labyrinth” starred Jennifer Connolly as a teen who, frustrated with taking care of her infant half-brother, wishes for him to be taken away by the goblins in a fantasy book she is reading. Her rash wish is granted by the Goblin King Jareth, played by David Bowie, who gives her 13 hours to find her brother in a magical labyrinth before he is turned into a goblin forever.
Initially a box office dud with $34 million grossed against a $25 million budget, “Labyrinth” became a cult classic thanks to Bowie’s performance and the intricate puppet creatures created by director Jim Henson and his team. Details on the sequel’s plot are being kept under wraps.

Robert Eggers is sticking with monster movies for his next project following the success of Nosferatu. After the news was announced, Eggers addressed why a Labyrinth movie won't be his next film as was recently rumored.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Eggers was teaming back up with Focus Features to direct Werwulf, a werewolf story. Meanwhile, he was also asked by ComicBook about the rumors that he was setting up a Labyrinth film. Eggers did not outright deny the rumors, nothing that he has a "ton of things in development." This might even suggest that there's some truth to the reports, but that the reboot is just one of multiple potential projects Eggers has his sights on. The director then clarified that, after Nosferatu, he wanted to tell an "original" story for his next film.

During his nearly seven decades on Earth, David Bowie not only brought immense joy through his glam rock and pop music, but also through his side-gig as an actor. Known for marching to the beat of his own drummer, Bowie was the perfect person for directors like David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, and Julian Schnabel to use for his unique vibes and never-ending talent. In 1986, his skills were harnessed for a very different kind of project, when he paired up with the legendary Jim Henson for the musical fantasy film, Labyrinth. The movie has long been a cult-classic, but if you haven’t had the pleasure of learning all about Jareth the Goblin King, or if you’re looking for a fun sing-along night with friends, you can now head over to Paramount+ where the title is now streaming.
