Social media is inundated with Family Guy memes, and a particular one involving The Godfather resurfaces occasionally.
Seth MacFarlane, creator and star of the long-running animated series, recently took to social media to explain the origins of the “it insists upon itself” meme that fans quote.
“Since this has been trending, here’s a fun fact,” MacFarlane shared on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. “‘It insists upon itself’ was a criticism my college film history professor used to explain why he didn’t think The Sound of Music was a great film. First-rate teacher, but I never quite followed that one.”
In Season 4, Episode 27, titled “Untitled Griffin Family History,” Peter Griffin shares with his family that he did not care for The Godfather.
“How can you even say that, Dad?” Peter’s son Chris asks.
Lois adds, “Peter, it’s like the perfect movie.”

“Nutcrackers” is here.
David Gordon Green’s latest stars Ben Stiller as Mike Maxwell, a workaholic who has a career in real estate. His life is turned upside down by the death of his sister (and her husband) in a car accident. This is the “Halloween” and “The Exorcist: Believer” director’s first non-horror movie since 2017 and Stiller’s first starring role since the same year. (In the years since Stiller has focused on directing on projects like Apple TV+’s incredible “Severance.”)
The movie premiered as the opening night film at the Toronto International Film Festival. A few days later it was picked up, in a lucrative deal, by Disney for a holiday premiere on the studio’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform Hulu.
But how can you watch Stiller’s latest? Read on to find out.
When does “Nutcrackers” come out?
“Nutcrackers” premieres on Hulu on Nov. 29.

The dynamic duo of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is straight out of Hollywood’s finest, most eminent echelons. While they didn’t join their professional forces until the Oscar-winning Saving Private Ryan, the two filmmakers had been pals long before Spielberg directed Hanks in the 1998 war flick.

The Duplasses are starting miniature with their first full-fledged family affair on all sides of the camera: the short film “Oh, Christmas Tree,” a bittersweet 10-minute ode to a father and daughter reliving their favorite holiday traditions.
It’s written by Mark Duplass, directed by his wife Katie Aselton (“Mack and Rita“), and stars their 16-year-old daughter Ora opposite her dad in roles that aren’t exactly autobiographical despite the onscreen, lived-in rapport. Here, the mother is dead, and the daughter, Claire, is now the one doing the parenting as her father grapples with mental health struggles. The short, currently seeking buyers out of Tribeca Festival, packs a lot into its brief running time, and for this trio, it also marks Ora’s entry into filmmaking as she readies to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.
Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.
Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. Steven Spielberg’s 1981 film, Hook, is regarded as the best adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy. The film presented a different take on the children’s fairytale and provided a different experience than the other iterations. A popular rumor suggested that Tom Hanks was the first choice for the role of an older Peter Pan. However, the Philadelphia actor clarified that the story is different.
Robin Williams in Spielberg’s Hook
Hook focuses on the story of a lawyer played by the late Robin Williams, who learns that he is the older Peter Pan. When his kids are kidnapped by Captain Hook as revenge, he goes back to Neverland and joins forces with the Lost Boys and Julia Roberts’ Tinkerbell. Steven Spielberg’s iteration of the fairy tale initially divided the audiences but became a cult classic moving forward.

Tom Hanks made his big screen debut in a horror movie in 1980 called He Knows Youre Alone. Despite the critical failure of his first horror film, Tom Hanks should revisit the genre to showcase his acting range. First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. You may have never heard of Frozen Assets, but the 1992 film did something few other movies in history can lay claim to: it made Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert regret (at least briefly) dedicating their lives to watching movies. That's a depressingly impressive feat for the At the Movies with Siskel & Ebert stars, two of the most respected and beloved movie critics of all time.
The two legends have certainly disagreed on some major titles, and their respective "favorite films" were often very different. The two were steadfast in their beliefs, with Ebert rarely convincing Siskel to change his mind about a particular film. But, they rarely agreed on a film as emphatically as they did with Frozen Assets. Both critics hated the movie so much that there is a visceral discomfort in the way they described it in an old episode of their television show.

Released in 1988, Penny Marshall's Big is the film that turned Tom Hanks into a Hollywood megastar. He was already a star in the late '80s, thanks to his Bosom Buddies sitcom, and film roles like Splash and The Money Pit. Hanks was doing okay with those parts, but Big shot Tom Hanks up to household name status. The movie was a huge success, making $115 million in the United States. After that, Tom Hanks was off, becoming arguably the most successful actor of the '90s. It's hard to not see Hanks in the role of Josh Baskin now, a twelve-year-old stuck in a grown man's body, but the part was originally given to a bigger name at the time. Believe it or not, Robert De Niro was cast as Josh. That sounds absurd, but it's true. With De Niro as a boy in a man's body, Big wouldn't...

Unnerving AI-generated art reimagined legendary Hollywood actor Tom Hanks as Toy Story's Woody. Beginning his career in the early 80s with small roles in film and television, he soon landed a lead role in the gender-bending TV comedy, Bosom Buddies. With humorous hits including Splash, The Money Pit, Dragnet, and Big, Hanks shifted genres in the 1990s and starred in award-winning dramas, including Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 12, Saving Private Ryan, and The Green Mile. However, he never forgot his comedic roots and took the lead role in the first-of-its-kind computer-generated animated film, Toy Story, as Andy's favorite cowboy toy Woody.
New AI-generated art from hugsohard gives Toy Story's Woody a facelift by literally giving the CG character Hanks' face. Check out the haunting image below:

Sporting Woody's recognizable outfit, Hanks also bears the stuffed doll's physical proportions, giving the image its uncanny appearance.

Somewhere in between his Oscar-winning portrayal of a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in "Philadelphia" and his performance as the mild-mannered captain of an Army detachment ordered to rescue the sole surviving son of a family that lost three of their children to the Normandy Invasion in "Saving Private Ryan," Tom Hanks was declared the James Stewart of his generation. The evidence was compelling. As Forrest Gump, astronaut Jim Lovell, and Sheriff Woody, Hanks had come to exemplify all that is right and decent about America. We saw the best of ourselves in his characters, while, off-screen, he exuded good, clean charm whenever he turned up on a talk show or a red carpet. He seemed affable, erudite, and kind. But to call him the Baby Boomer James Stewart was to ignore Stewart's willingness to play hard against type.

Tom Hanks got his first big breakthrough on the big screen with Ron Howard’s mermaid-out-of-water comedy Splash. But it wasn’t his run on the sitcom Bosom Buddies that landed him a spot alongside Daryl Hannah. It was actually whooping Fonz’s butt!
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show (per Entertainment Weekly), Tom Hanks reflected on his one-off appearance in the season 10 episode “A Little Case of Revenge”, which aired in November 1982. “I kicked Fonzie…I got dressed up in a judo karate outfit. And I think I’m legendarily the first guy to actually strike Fonzie. I kicked him through the stained glass window of Al’s Drive-in,” he said, referring to the popular hangout for the Happy Days gang.
And that, apparently, was enough to impress Ron Howard, who was set to direct Splash, based on what would become an Oscar-nominated screenplay.

Tom Hanks has had one of the most successful careers in Hollywood history, and that's due to one main reason: range. Hanks started in comedy, moving from Bosom Buddies to Ron Howard's Splash to The Money Pit alongside Shelley Long and so on and so forth. But he hit it Big in the late '80s, and his '90s were even better.
If there was a true movie star of the 1990s, it was Hanks. From dramas such as Philadelphia to one of the best war films of all time to one of the most beloved animated films in the history of the genre, there was barely a major '90s project Hanks didn't have a hand in.

A Man Called Otto star Tom Hanks reveals if he ever plans on retiring from acting. The beloved actor broke through in his mid-20s with the 1984 film Splash, which led to a series of critically acclaimed comedies for Hanks, including The Money Pit, Big, and A League of Their Own. He eventually moved into dramas like Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Cast Away, cementing himself as one of the most accomplished and admired actors over his four-decade-long career. With Hanks now nearing 70 years of age, questions have started to arise about when he plans on putting his profession behind him.
During a recent interview with Variety at the New York premiere of his new movie A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks was asked if he ever plans on retiring. The beloved actor cast doubt on the prospect, saying he doesn't want to retire. Read his full response below:

Six Academy Award nominations. Four Toy Stories. Two Oscars. One Apple Arcade trivia game. Tom Hanks is now part of the trivia world, involved with and narrating an upcoming game called Hanx101.
Hanx101 is a trivia game launching on Friday, September 2 on Apple Arcade. Unfortunately for fans of Tom Hanks, the questions won’t be based around the actor. The questions will evidently reach a wide array of topics. According to the press release, “tens of thousands of trivia questions” will be housed within the game. The game will allow single player or online mode, with players trying to “beat your own high score or challenge others in head-to-head trivia stand-offs or team play.”
Hanx101, which is the platform’s first trivia-based game, is exclusively available on iOS, macOS, and tvOS.

“The Original Money Pit”
By Raymond Benson
Remember the 1986 comedy The Money Pit, starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long? The official credits of that film do not mention the excellent writing team of Frank Panama and Melvin Frank, who adapted Eric Hodgins’ 1946 biographical comic novel Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House into the popular 1948 “disaster comedy” starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. The Money Pit is, in reality, an under-the-table remake of Blandings. It’s a pity that the original was not acknowledged, for, frankly, Blandings is much more realistic (and clever).
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House was indeed a popular film and yet during its initial run was deemed to have lost money—just like the hapless Mr. Blandings does while attempting to move out of New York City to Connecticut. The movie is funny enough, for sure, but perhaps in...

David Giler, a writer and producer known for his work on each film in the “Alien” franchise, died at his Bangkok home on Dec. 19. He was 77 years old.

Tom Hanks may have cemented a reputation as one of the finest talents of his generation when he scooped consecutive Best Actor Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, but during the early days of his career, the up and coming star was in real danger of being pigeonholed as a comedian, albeit a very gifted one.
Seven of Hanks’ first nine movie credits were in the comedy genre, and performances in the likes of Splash, The Money Pit and Dragnet all saw him win praise from critics for his effortless comic timing and natural charisma. However, it was the tenth entry on his filmography that rocketed him towards the top of the Hollywood A-list, and he still hasn’t come down over 30 years later.

One of Tom Hanks’ best movies hits Disney Plus next month.
The Mouse House inherited countless classics from 20th Century Fox to fill their streaming service with, but in many cases, it’s taken some time to clear the rights to get them up on D+. But the comedy film is now set to finally land on the site next month, as Disney Plus has announced that it’ll be adding the movie to its library in the US on December 4th.
Hanks had already been in hits like Splash and The Money Pit, but Big was a huge turning point for his career at the time, as it was the first occasion that he was noticed by the Academy. His role as Josh Baskin, a 13-year-old who wishes he was big and wakes up looking like he’s...

A warning up front up - this might start reading like a love letter to Anthony Michael Hall. It isn't, I'll tell myself everyday. If the name isn't setting off your familiar-meter you're either younger than 25 or deprived of the most spirited period in comedy film history, neither of which are an issue. You'll read plenty about him.
I'm not some weirdo. I value comedic actors and find myself easily hypnotized by the charm of characters, thus emotionally invested in them.
It's a lot easier to love a character you've only seen through a window of 90 minutes on film than it is a real person, which is why we hold comedic actors so dearly. Their performances give life to the funny flicks we treasure in our hearts and revisit on a lonely evening, depressed, bombed, or both.
We all have a favorite all-time comedic actor, or several, and our lists of most beloved likely overlap.

With a third of the world’s population officially on lockdown (a number that is increasing every minute of every day), Netflix and other online services are experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand.
So much so, in fact, that Netflix and YouTube plan to reduce streaming quality across Europe for the next month in order to ease the strain on the Internet. These are strange times, indeed.
Be that as it may, today is April 1st, which means two things – 1) it’s April Fool’s Day, so the Internet is littered with prank videos and other shenanigans and 2) the Internet’s major streaming services have rolled out a fresh wave of content. When Tom Hanks jogged onto screen in his feature film debut in the 1980 slasher pic “He Knows You’re Alone,” one probably couldn’t have predicted he would go on to become one of the most successful and beloved actors of all time. Playing a psychology student who postulates about the appeal of fear, Hanks makes manages to the most of his few minutes of screen time. And even though it’s brief, you can catch some of the hallmarks of what would later become a Tom Hanks performance — charismatic but a little goofy, handsome but non-threatening, and able to make any line sound like it has a handful of meanings.

Thirty five years later, many fans of the film may not even know there was a sequel. The 1985 film, The Jewel of the Nile, is not remembered fondly by fans of the original.

Carmine Caridi, an actor who appeared in a key role in “The Godfather: Part II” as well as “The Godfather: Part III,” has died. Caridi’s representatives told TheWrap that he died on Tuesday. He was 85.
In “The Godfather: Part II,” Caridi played Carmine Rosato, who was a member of Peter Clemenza’s regime in New York City as part of the turf war with Frank Pentangeli. He also played a separate role in the third film as Albert Volpe.
In his memoir “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” Robert Evans wrote that Caridi was director Francis Ford Coppola’s first choice for the role of Sonny Corleone, a part that was eventually played by James Caan, but Evans said that Caridi was too tall to play opposite Al Pacino.

Carmine Caridi, who played the traitorous Carmine Rosato in The Godfather, Part II (1974) and returned to the Francis Ford Coppola franchise to portray Albert Volpe in The Godfather Part III (1990), died Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, where he had been in a coma. He was 85.
The veteran actor had screen credits in the triple-digits by the end of his career but his signature roles was Rosato, a key figure in the bloody mob battle that played out as a centerpiece of The Godfather, Part II, which won the Academy Award for best picture to match the gold-plated achievement of its predecessor, The Godfather (1972). Rosato’s machinations created turmoil and confusion for the Corleone Family but in the end his gambit failed and his fate was a shotgun execution.

For his first time at bat as a director, longtime indie horror producer Travis Stevens delivers up his truly unique and wickedly weird take on haunted house tropes with Girl on the Third Floor, which also features Phil Brooks (who most wrestling fans around the world know as Cm Punk) in his first ever feature film role. What’s so interesting to me, beyond the film’s narrative that takes some decidedly left turns out of nowhere—especially during the latter half of the movie—is how Girl on the Third Floor is centered around this character who is exploring this new path in his life, and both Stevens and Brooks are also branching out in new ways here as well, and that is something I not only deeply appreciate, but I think those types of parallels between real-life and filmic stories are incredibly fascinating to explore, too.

For this year’s Oscars ceremony on Sunday, “Black Panther” is the first motion picture based on a comic book to receive a nomination in the Best Picture category. “Roma” could very well become the first foreign-language film to win in that same category. And as the years go by, it’ll be difficult to remember that there was ever a time that these things weren’t part of the norm. Remember a time when Tom Hanks had never won an Oscar and was more well-known for his comedy roles? When people didn’t like to speak about AIDS, much less make a feature film about it? Or a time when the great Steven Spielberg had yet to hold the gold statue in his hand? And when a woman or an African-American person had never hosted the annual telecast solo? It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since...

Travis Stevens is best known as a producer of such memorable projects as Cheap Thrills, Jodorowsky's Dune, Starry Eyes, Xx and Mohawk among many others but with the upcoming Girl on the Third Floor, he's adding writer and director to his resume.
This isn't exactly The Money Pit but that comedy is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the write-up for Stevens' debut which stars former WWE star Phil Brooks as Don Koch, the recent buyer of a dilapidated Victorian house. Don convinces his wife Liz (Trieste Kelly) that he can manage the renovations himself but he soon realizes that he's in over his head - and it probably doesn't help matters any that the house appears to have a sordid past and may be haunted.

As I thought about the loss of Penny Marshall earlier this week, something occurred to me. Ron Howard might have given fellow sitcom star Tom Hanks – the “Bosom Buddies” star who also did guest spots on “Happy Days” — his first meaty film role as a leading man in 1984’s “Splash,” in which he charmingly romances Daryl Hannah’s mermaid. But it was Marshall, along with brother Garry, who saw more dramatic potential in the actor who started off doing Shakespeare on stage.
Post-“Splash,” Hanks would be recruited to host “Saturday Night Live,” his first of nine stints and a sign he had arrived. But his follow-up movies such as “Bachelor Party,” “The Man With One Red Shoe,” “Volunteers” and “The Money Pit” were the kind of generic comedies that depended on slapstick and rowdy humor to milk laughs.

Those of us who share the rather unusual- and sometimes bizarre-profession of reviewing films for a living all share a nasty little secret: there are countless classic movies that we haven't seen. I'm not alone in making this mea culpa. No less than the late, great Robert Osborne, whose insightful introductions on Turner Classic Movies helped launch that channel's success, once confided in me that even he could list numerous classic movies that he had yet to catch up with. When he confessed this to Lauren Bacall, she told him that she envied him because she wish she could recapture the sheer joy of seeing a great film for the first time. I've never seen the 1942 musical "Holiday Inn". I can't say why but perhaps it's because that as a boy growing up in the Sixties, such productions seemed quaint and unappealing when I had a celluloid tidal wave of WWII flicks,...

Big is returning to theaters in honor of its 30th anniversary. The Tom Hanks classic was released thirty years ago this summer, On June 3, 1988, to be precise. It's been a full three decades since an unsuspecting 12-year-old Josh Baskin uttered a secret wish to a carnival fortune-teller machine and he grew up overnight and now, those of us who never got the chance to experience Big the right way, on the big screen, will have the chance to do so next month.
Fathom Events has partnered with Turner Classic Movies and Twentieth Century Fox for the 30th anniversary screenings. On Sunday, July 15, and Wednesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day (local time), Big will play in more than 700 movie theaters across the U.S. The screenings are part of the yearlong TCM Big Screen Classics series. The screenings will also include pre and post-film commentary by TCM Primetime host Ben Mankiewicz.

There's a bit of a Norwegian super-team assembled for upcoming comedy Opportunity Knocks (Norske Byggeklosser) - the new remake of one of the all time classic local pictures. Dead Snow producer Kjetil Omberg, The Bothersome Man producer Jørgen Storm Rosenberg and Fatso / Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder helmer Arild Forhlich are behind this new version with Dag star Atle Antonsen starring (and starring and starring some more) in multiple parts. The plot line will call to mind 1986 Tom Hanks comedy The Money Pit for Us audiences, with its story of a couple inheriting a house badly in need of repair. The set up is a very straight forward one but the team behind the scenes here is anything but. We've been raging fans...
