Linda Cardellini is squeezing in around the Crystal Lake campfire: The Dead to Me star has officially joined Peacock’s forthcoming Friday the 13th prequel as Jason Voorhees’ mother Pamela, TVLine has learned.
The prequel was ordered to series back in October 2022, being billed as an “expanded prequel” to the long-running horror film franchise with hockey mask-wearing killer Jason Voorhees at its center. In August of last year, the series came back from the dead with a new showrunner following the high-profile exit of Hannibal vet Bryan Fuller. The upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, is still in the works, and after some time, we’re starting to get some updates. Brad Caleb Kane, who took over as showrunner for the project in August 2024, recently shared a message with fans.
On December 13, which happened to be Friday the 13th, Kane posted a photo on Instagram featuring Jason Voorhees alongside Betsy Palmer, who played his mother, Pamela Voorhees, in the original 1980 film.
In his caption, Kane mentioned that while he couldn’t offer too much information, the story had been broken, scripts were being worked on, and the goal was to deliver a tense, bloody, and satisfying ride for fans. He teased more updates in the new year.
Kane’s involvement in the project comes after Bryan Fuller’s departure in May 2024. Fuller, who was initially in charge, left due to creative differences. Before leaving, he shared...

Crystal Lake, the hotly-anticipated (at least among horror fans) Friday the 13th prequel series in development at Peacock, has received an update. Four months after joining the project as its new creator/showrunner, Brad Caleb Kane recently shared how much progress has been made on the retooled Crystal Lake.
In a post on Instagram on Dec. 13 (to celebrate Friday the 13th), Kane shared a photo of Jason Vorhees with actor Betsy Palmer, who played the character's mother, Pamela Vorhees, in the original Friday the 13th movie. "Happy Friday the 13th (to those who celebrate!) wish I could give a more substantial update but mum’s the word," the caption read. "Suffice it to say the story’s been broken, scripts have been and are being written and the goal is to give the fans (including myself) a tense, scary, bloody and satisfying ride that’s well worth the wait." Halloween approaches and with it the desire to revisit some of your favorite horror movie franchise, in order, from start to finish. What better franchise to binge than “Friday the 13th,” the celebrated slasher film series that started with Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 original before spawning sequels that would introduce iconic killer Jason Voorhees before sending him to Manhattan, outer space and back in time (Ok we made that last one up).
Ostensibly the cornerstone of the 1980s slasher film craze, “Friday the 13th” is one of the more inventive franchises, particularly when the concept was given a little more elasticity. For more than a decade, though, the franchise has been fully dormant – the last movie was 2009’s Michael Bay-produced reboot/remake “Friday the 13th.” A24 did recently announce a “Crystal Lake” series to be overseen by “Hannibal”/”Pushing Daisies” mastermind Bryan Fuller, so at least we have that to look forward to!

Crystal Lake could be coming to TV screens in 2025. Friday the 13th director Sean S. Cunningham recently shared what he had heard about when the A24 prequel series might be released on Peacock.
While attending Silver Scream Con (via Bloody Disgusting), Cunningham revealed that he had last heard that A24 was "talking about shooting [Crystal Lake] in Australia at the end of this year and releasing on Halloween 2025." However, Cunningham warned those in attendance that he had "heard versions of that story for so long" that he no longer puts "a lot of credibility into it," noting that there are "just so many things that can go sideways."

Let's be honest; there should be more television series like Syfy's Warehouse 13. The series ran five seasons between 2009 and 2014, generally providing carefree and silly entertainment that combined science fiction and comedy into one rip-roaring package as secret agents Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) chased down and secured a never-ending trove of relics and artifacts deemed too dangerous for the world.
Equal parts thrilling, silly, and sometimes downright unbelievable, Warehouse 13 was buoyed by an incredible cast of characters brought to life by some seriously talented actors. Today, the show is still beloved by its many former fans, some of whom have always wondered what led to the fan-favorite character, Leena, the enigmatic proprietor of the Bed and Breakfast where the Warehouse agents lived, being written off of the series in Season 4.

A24's Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, is back on track. Brad Caleb Kane has assumed the reins of the hotly-anticipated horror series following Bryan Fuller's exit in May 2024.
Per Deadline, Kane will serve as the creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer of Crystal Lake. "From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guys eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask," said Kane in a statement. "Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothings defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldnt be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24."

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Friday the 13th: The Series,” which aired from 1987 to 1990 – and did not feature Jason Voorhees in a single episode.
One of the best memories of my childhood involves five year old me, my four year old brother and my mom hunkering down in front of the TV on a Saturday with some jelly cookies, and putting on channel 11 to watch “Friday the 13th: The Series.” Since my mom’s idea of winding down is watching anything horror oriented, we were more than happy to oblige, and “Friday the 13th: The Series” offered up the proper level of scares to keep me invested but never frightened. The series debuted in October of 1987, and stars Canadian pop star and model Robey as Micki Foster, a young woman who inherits the antique store “Vendredi’s Antique’s” from her Uncle Lewis.

Atom Egoyan has revealed that he was so traumatized by the negative reception to his Ryan Reynolds-starring thriller The Captive at the Cannes Film Festival that he will never return again with a film.
The pedophilia thriller, starring Reynolds as a man dealing with the disappearance of his nine-year-old daughter, was widely panned by the Cannes critics corps when it world premiered in competition in 2014.
“It was actually the worst reviewed film that I ever did. We should never have taken it to Cannes,” the Canadian-Armenian director told a masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra meeting in Qatar on Wednesday.
“It got this really crazy reception. It was in competition on the Friday night. I haven’t been to Cannes since because I just don’t ever want to come back to what we had that night. The last couple of films, we showed in Venice or Berlin.

Friday the 13th: The Series was a spinoff that strangely didn't feature Jason Voorhees. Previous attempts to replace Jason proved unsuccessful. Ultimately, Friday the 13th: The Series had to establish its own unique identity without the Crystal Lake killer.
The Friday the 13th franchise has plenty of odd history and fascinating tangents, but many still ponder why Jason Voorhees doesn’t appear in Friday the 13th: The Series. It isn’t uncommon for horror movies to get television spinoffs. Whether it’s Freddy’s Nightmares, Chucky, or Tremors, they all tend to feature their iconic antagonists in some form. However, Friday the 13th: The Series stood out as a curiosity, as people showed up expecting Jason Voorhees and received something else entirely. There’s a lot of confusion behind Friday the 13th: The Series, leaving viewers to wonder what connections it has to the movies, how this show came to be,...

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

The rights to the Halloween franchise are up for sale, sparking a competitive bidding war among studios and streaming platforms. The slasher franchise has a long history, with multiple sequels and reboots over the years, including a recent trilogy that concluded in 2022. Miramax is currently seeking buyers for the Halloween franchise, with the option to adapt it into either a movie or a television series.
The rights to the Halloween franchise are reportedly back on the market. The upcoming Crystal Lake TV show can finally integrate an essential aspect of the Friday The 13th franchise, which was inexplicably omitted from the first television series. Peacock has announced that its adaptation of Crystal Lake will be released in 2024, and will be a prequel series to the iconic slasher movie Friday The 13th. Released in 1980, the original Friday The 13th spawned a franchise spanning twelve movies and, now, two TV shows. Consequently, the forthcoming Crystal Lake can finally complete a storyline teased 30 years ago.

The Friday the 13th franchise first received the television treatment with Friday the 13th: The Series in 1987, but it was a classic bait and switch. The Friday the 13th franchise started in 1980, with the first installment. It was so successful that it spawned two sequels quickly in 1981 and 82. It went on to have eight more sequels and a reboot in 2009, which despite negative reviews, did well at the box office.
With horror movies like Child's Play and Psycho having successful television adaptations, the upcoming Crystal Lake is the Friday the 13th prequel that the franchise needs. Especially after Friday the 13th: The Series is a letdown for fans.

Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for a prequel series titled “Crystal Lake” to the long-running (and long-in-hibernation) “Friday the 13th” movie franchise.
Bryan Fuller, the television creator behind the likes of “American Gods,” “Pushing Daises” and “Hannibal,” will write, showrun and executive produce. A24, the studio responsible for distributing a slew of recent buzzy horror hits like “The Witch,” “Hereditary,” “X” and “Pearl,” will produce the show.
“I discovered Friday the 13th in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine when I was 10 years old and I have been thinking about this story ever since,” Fuller said in a statement. “When it comes to horror, A24 raises the bar and pushes the envelope and I’m thrilled to be exploring the camp grounds of Crystal Lake under their banner. And [NBCUniversal’s] Susan Rovner is simply the best at what she does. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be working with her again.

Bryan Fuller has scored a straight-to-series order from Peacock for a prequel series set in the Friday the 13th universe. It comes from A24.
The move follows a fascinating legal battle between the team behind the original horror film.
Crystal Lake comes from Star Trek: Discovery co-creator Bryan Fuller, who has been developing a Friday the 13th project, originally as a feature film, since 2013. He will serve as writer, showrunner and exec producer.
A24 is the studio, while Victor Miller, who wrote the original screenplay of the 1980 movie, Marc Toberoff, Miller’s copyright attorney, and Rob Barsamian, who produced the original movie, will exec produce.

This post contains minor spoilers for the new "Hellraiser."
David Bruckner's new film "Hellraiser," the eleventh film in the series, is a proper reboot. It takes iconography and certain key elements of Clive Barker's 1987 original, and flips them into something new but recognizable. The film still centers on a mysterious puzzle box -- the Lament Configuration -- that, when solved, summons Cenobites, a nasty cadre of sadomasochists from beyond the grave. The function of the box, however, is now more similar to what one might have seen in the 1987 TV series "Friday the 13th: The Series." In this version, the box can also grant wishes, but only in exchange for a blood sacrifice.
Some of the similarities that Bruckner's new film has to previous installments in the "Hallraiser" film series are, of course, evident. Most notably, the signature monster is still the Lead Cenobite -- nicknamed "Pinhead...

Freddy Krueger was everywhere in the late 80s. It only made sense that he’d get his own show. Introducing every episode and frequently participating in the plots, Freddy hosted a show that would explore the lives (and deaths) of the […]

And so it was written, that a beast would come in the form of film, and that film would beget others due to profit, and those films would spread across the horror landscape to mostly whispered calls of, “meh”. Not for this little demon, however; as all of The Omen films work for me in one way or another, bringing us to number four and the first for the small screen, Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The script gets flipped, yet it’s more of the same, and I’m not complaining.
Originally broadcast as part of the Fox Night at the Movies, Omen IV was trounced by ABC’ MacGyver on one side, CBS’ Murphy Brown/Designing Women on the other, and NBC’s Fresh Prince/Blossom on the other other. And as expected, no sins lain upon the critics were forgiven. This thing got roasted on the coals of Hell itself.

Almost 30 years ago, director Tom McLoughlin brought Jason Voorhees back from the brink for the appropriately titled sequel, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. But it turns out McLoughlin initially planned for a follow-up back in ’86, and let’s just say things got weird.
While appearing on the latest episode of Post Mortem (with a tip of the hat to Bloody Disgusting), Tom McLoughlin spoke to fellow horror director Mick Garris about his proposed Jason Lives sequel, and how it would’ve drafted comedy duo Cheech and Chong (!) into the equation.
As McLoughlin recalls down below, this idea came into being soon after producer Frank Mancuso Jr. discovered that New Line held the screen rights to Freddy Krueger, thereby nixing any potential crossover with A Nightmare on Elm Street at the time.
[Producer] Frank Mancuso Jr. came to me… he wanted me to do another film after we did [Jason Lives]. He said,...

For years, viewers invited Chris Wiggins into their living rooms to hear his vast knowledge of all things occult on Friday the 13th: The Series, so it is with great sadness that we inform readers that the actor has passed away in Ontario at the age of 87 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
According to THR, the news of Wiggins' passing was recently shared in an obituary published in the Toronto Star. His family has requested that loved ones and fans donate to the Alzheimer Society in place of purchasing flowers for his memorial service in mid-March.
Wiggins is perhaps best remembered for his aforementioned role as Jack Marshak in Friday the 13th: The Series. As fans know, instead of Jason Voorhees, the series focused on cursed antiques that had to be tracked down, and Wiggins' character was absolutely vital in helping Micki Foster and Ryan Dallion on their quests,...

Some very sad news is making the rounds today, as it has been reported that Fritz Weaver has passed away at the age of 90.
News of Fritz Weaver's passing was confirmed by Weaver's son-in-law, Bruce Ostler, according to The New York Times. In addition to winning a Tony award for his performance in 1970's Child’s Play, Weaver accumulated an impressive number of acting credits within the horror and sci-fi genres—on both the big and small screens—throughout his career.
Stephen King fans likely remember Weaver as Dexter Stanley from "The Crate" segment of Creepshow, where he starred alongside Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, and the creepy creature unleashed from its prison.
Weaver also left his mark on a number of anthology series, including The Twilight Zone, Monsters, Tales From the Darkside, Night Gallery, and Tales of the Unexpected, in addition to appearances on Friday the 13th: The Series and The X-Files.

Similar to the famed Sundance Labs that have helped foster the careers of such future A-list filmmakers as Quentin Tarantino and Cary Fukunaga, Shudder Labs -- which held its inaugural edition earlier this month -- invites a group of select filmmakers to attend a week-long retreat with established industry names to take their works-in-progress to the next level. The difference? Shudder Labs focuses its mentorship efforts on filmmakers working in the horror genre, providing them with the guidance of such genre vets as writer/director Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, The Last Winter), Snowfort Pictures CEO Travis Stevens and Lindsay Peters, Industry Director of the genre-centric Fantasia Film Festival and Director of the Frontières International Co-Production Market. Shudder, for those unfamiliar, is a streaming service that focuses exclusively on horror films, and at $4.99 a month it's an agreeably cheap way for fans of the genre to gain streaming access to films they probably won't find on Netflix.

Today, the cult horror comedy April Fool’s Day celebrates its 30th anniversary. Written by Danilo Bach (Beverly Hills Cop) and directed by Fred Walton (1979’s When A Stranger Calls), the film follows a group of college students who spend spring break at their friend Muffy St. John’s family estate, unaware that the weekend will be filled with frights and unexpected surprises.
Released the same weekend as The Money Pit, April Fool’s Day became a modest success for Paramount Pictures, taking in $13 million during its three-week theatrical run and finding even more of an audience once it was released on VHS. Even though it has largely flown under the radar over the last 30 years, Walton’s slasher send-up with an Agatha Christie flair has remained a beloved cult film among genre fans and this writer in particular.

The only thing more terrifying than the last three minutes of this episode of Nightmare Fuel is the first seven! If you get that reference, you may well be a superfan of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic Suspiria. And even if you don't/aren't, you've likely at least heard of the film, a dreamlike, color-drenched, ultra-violent cult favorite that centers on some witchy happenings at a prestigious German dance academy. On this week's special in-studio edition of HitFix's new weekly horror series, HitFix chief film critic Drew McWeeny joins me to discuss Italian director Luca Guadagnino's planned remake of the film that's set to star none other than fierce, angular cinema icon Tilda Swinton (along with Dakota Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Matthias Schoenaerts) as well as two other forthcoming remakes/reboots/revivals: Jeremy Slater's TV pilot for The Exorcist (a "modern reinvention" of William Peter Blatty's novel) and Rabid,...

The Final Girls was recently released to theaters and VOD, and is available today on Blu-ray and DVD. For those that are interested in what went on behind-the-scenes, I recently caught up with director Todd Strauss-Schulson to talk about the movie's evolution before he got behind the camera, improv comedy on set, building the camp for the movie, and much more:
Can you talk a little bit about how this script came about, what it took to bring it to the screen and what changes you made?
Todd Strauss-Schulson: I was editing my first movie and thinking about what I would do second. These guys I went to college with, Mark Fortin and Josh Miller, are these really cool writers. They're big horror fans—Mark especially is really deep, deep into horror stuff—and had written a script.
Eight years prior to this, we went to college together in L.

Special Mention: Death Proof
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino
USA, 2007
Genre: Slasher
The obvious reference points of Death Proof are such movies as Vanishing Point, Roadgames, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, and even Spielberg’s Duel – but Death Proof is influenced by more than just vehicular horror. Tarantino’s homage to the road-fury genre is really two movies in one, offering two versions of the same story about two separate groups of beautiful women who are stalked by a homicidal maniac who uses his car (his weapon of choice) to terrorize and eventually kill his victims. Death Proof can easily be viewed as two slasher films, with the second half acting as a sequel, offering new, beautiful victims for the murderous Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) to terrorize. It’s a grim stalk-and-slash picture with a blaring commentary of female empowerment. Replace the typical sharp edged blade with a car, and...

Perhaps a nasty round of torture by the Big Bad. Whatever it is, the sick feeling of impending doom overcomes us as we realize the characters might not make it out alive. Sometimes they can think their way through. Sometimes they can fight. But when the exits are closed and the madman decides to get creative, all bets are off.

Next summer, Tom McLoughlin's infectiously fun Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives will turn 30 years old. Neca's starting the celebration early with new photos of their Jason Voorhees figure that depicts the Camp Crystal Lake slasher as he appeared in the 1986 horror film.
Standing seven inches tall and featuring more than 25 points of articulation, Neca's Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives figure is slated to come out in late December of this year.
From Neca: "It’s hard to believe that Jason Lives came out three decades ago – it’s just as fresh (from the grave) now as it was then. But 2016 marks the 30th Anniversary of the film, so to celebrate, we’ve unearthed our own Ultimate Jason Lives figure! Check out the gallery below.
This deluxe 7” scale action figure features a gruesome, freshly unearthed sculpt and over 25 points of articulation. It’s loaded with accessories,...

Arriving in theaters and on VOD this Tuesday is The Boy, a quiet thriller that focuses on a burgeoning sociopath and how sometimes too much isolation can definitely be a bad thing. The film premiered earlier this year at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival and while this writer missed out on seeing it in Austin, I enjoyed the opportunity to not only catch up with the film now, but also speak to two of the gentlemen behind the project, co-writer and director Craig William Macneill and co-writer Clay McLeod.
Check out what both Macneill and McLeod had to say about adapting The Boy for the big screen, working with the folks over at SpectreVision and their trio of actors in the film (David Morse, Rainn Wilson and newcomer Jared Breeze) and how they hope viewers to have a little sympathy for the devil after seeing their collaboration when its released this week.
