This is almost one of the best of its kind with almost immaculate direction by the late John Schlesinger, well developed building up the characters and the story. With cutting edge editing and a score serving extremely well, actors and actresses at their peak, it is a very, very good film.
It is not as dark as Angel Heart, probably the the best supernatural thriller / film noir of all time (made in the same year), but way good enough to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
It is not a horror. It is a story about a particular belief that shouldn't be practiced at any time today. Yet, human sacrifice 'for the greater good' is sadly part of our heritage.
