In 1985, John Hughes directed the off-beat sci-fi sex comedy "Weird Science," about two teenage boys who use a supercomputer to generate their ultimate dream girl (played by Kelly LeBrock). The following year, Wes Craven put out "Deadly Friend," where a teenage boy refused to accept that the girl he had a crush on had become brain-dead, and implanted his robot's processor to bring her back. The year after that, Pamela Gidley starred in the titular role in the sci-fi action flick "Cherry 2000," where in the at-the-time-not-so-distant future of 2017, society has become hypersexual but so averse to intimacy that gynoids have become the dominant substitute for wives.

On the surface, little-seen '80s sci-fi B-movie Cherry 2000 is little more than a romp through a future filled with sex robots, lawless zones ruled by a golf-shirt wearing cult, clubs where you can have Laurence Fishburne negotiate a sex contract, and a bright-red-haired Melanie Griffith who will guide you through it all. Steve De Jarnatt’s debut feature certainly does all of this, but it’s also a shockingly prescient commentary on intimacy. Pulling a little from Mad Max and a little from Blade Runner, this hidden gem may not be the most well-rendered expression of its ideas, but it does provide a unique perspective.

Jacques Haitkin, the cinematographer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street films as well as myriad other horror and action movies, has died. He passed on March, 21 after a battle with Als and Leukemia, according to a Facebook post by his son Zak Haitkin. He was 72.

More recently, Haitkin had worked as second unit director of photography or camera operator on some of the industry’s biggest titles, including Black Panther, Venom, Captain America: Civil War (and Winter Soldier), Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, Captain Phillips, The Expendables, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: The Last Stand and Kong: Skull Island.

Original A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) cinematographer Jacques Haitkin passed away last month at the age of 72, we’ve learned via The Hollywood Reporter today.

THR reports, “Haitkin died March 21 in San Francisco after a battle with Als and leukemia, his son Zak Haitkin told The Hollywood Reporter.”

Jacques Haitkin served as the cinematographer/director of photography on both A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985).

He later reunited with Wes Craven on the horror movie Shocker (1989).

As cinematographer, Haitkin’s credits also include The Prize Fighter, Galaxy of Terror, The House Where Evil Dwells, My Demon Lover, The Hidden, Cherry 2000, Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence, Scanner Cop, Fist of the North Star, Bloodsport 2, and Wishmaster.

He also worked as additional or second unit director of photography on The Expendables, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: The Last Stand, Furious 7, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows...

Haitkin died March 21 in San Francisco after a battle with Als and leukemia, his son Zak Haitkin told The Hollywood Reporter. “He always said he never worked a day in his life because he loved his job so much,” he noted.

Haitkin also manned a camera and/or did second-unit work on three Fast & Furious films, two Captain America movies and other action features including Cherry 2000 (1987), Last Man Standing (1995), The Expendables (2010), X-Men: First Class (2011), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Black Panther (2018), Venom (2018) and 21 Bridges (2019).

Haitkin was the D.P. on A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), directed by Wes Craven, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), directed by Jack Sholder. He reunited with Craven on Shocker (1989) and with Sholder on The Hidden (1987) and Beeper (2002).

As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.

Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

Pamela Gidley, known for her role in David Lynch’s film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, died earlier this month at her home in New Hampshire. She was 52.

Gidley’s death was announced by her family Sunday in an obituary. She died April 16 “peacefully in her home” in Seabrook. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

Gidley began her career as a model in New York City, later segueing to acting. Her debut role came in the 1986 film Thrashin’ alongside Josh Brolin and Sherilyn Fenn. Brolin paid tribute to Gidley in an Instagram post below.

She went on to appear in several other films in the 1980s including Dudes, Permanent Record, The Blue Iguana and the cult sci-fi classic Cherry 2000. In 1992 she landed the role of Teresa Banks in David Lynch’s psychological thriller Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, which served as a prequel to the Twin Peaks TV series.

Pamela Gidley, who starred in the “Twin Peaks” prequel film “Fire Walk With Me,” died earlier this month, her family announced in an obituary on Sunday.

Gidley died on April 16 at her home in Seabrook, New Hampshire; the cause of death was not cited.

In “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” Gidley portrayed Teresa Banks, whose murder drives the plot of the film, set before the death of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). Along with “Twin Peaks,” Gidley’s acting acting career included parts in “Thrashin,” and “Cherry 2000,” with TV appearances in episodes of “MacGyver,” “The Pretender,” “Tour of Duty,” “CSI” and “The Closer.”

80s sci-fi romance Cherry 2000 was set in the year 2017, but how close was it to envisioning society as it is today?

To a sheltered girl growing up on the outskirts of the New Forest, where the most exciting thing happening in 1988 was a demonstration day at the village candle-making shop, the trailer for Cherry 2000 landing at the start of nearly every VHS rental atop the shelves was an event. This film promised to be the height of 80s futuristic sci-fi hedonism - explosions, hot sex robots, outlandish stunts, apocalyptic gunfights and Melanie Griffith taking her top off again.

Did it deliver? Kinda, but in order to establish why the movie failed to ignite the masses, we’ll need to rewind a little further back in time and teleport to a little place full of glitz, glamour and showbusiness called Hollywood,...

From The Running Man to Cherry 2000, we’re now living in a year that’s been painted as a dystopian nightmare onscreen

The start of a new year can be a tad bittersweet. While there’s the promise of hopeful resolutions and much-needed change, there’s also the unavoidable realization that we’re all edging closer to the grave. Given that we’re coming off the back of a year that saw more celebrity deaths than the first act of This Is the End, it feels like more of a relief to be done with 2016, our own mortality be damned.

February’s home entertainment releases are kicking off in a big way, as horror and sci-fi fans have an extraordinary number of brand spanking new titles to choose from this Tuesday. From indie horror to cult classics to cult classics in the making, February 2nd’s Blu-ray and DVD releases truly do offer up something for everyone.

Scream Factory is offering up two modern genre films this week, Hellions and Zombie Fight Club and Cinedigm is keeping busy too on Tuesday with their releases of Extraordinary Tales and The World of Kanako. Vin Diesel’s latest, The Last Witch Hunter, arrives on both Blu and DVD and if you call yourself a Henry Rollins fan, you will definitely want to pick up He Never Died this week as well.

In the 2010 documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, Wes Craven predicts that when he dies his obituaries will say “Probably best known for inventing Freddy Krueger.” When he passed away last Sunday the New York Times headline read “Wes Craven, Whose Slasher Films Terrified Millions, Dies at 76,” but the second paragraph of his obit did say, “perhaps Mr. Craven’s most famous creation was the serial killer Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund, who, with his razor-blade glove, haunted the dreams of high school students in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and its sequels.”Though he had been making films for 12 years, starting with the Bergman-inspired Last House on the Left in 1972—not to mention a few years of making porn films before that—it was A Nightmare on Elm Street, a little indie horror film that he both wrote and directed, that made Wes Craven’s fortune.

While July 28th may be a light day in terms of the amount of horror and sci-fi titles making their home entertainment debuts, we do have an interesting assortment of films and TV to look forward to. Kino Lorber has dug up two classics—The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein and Cherry 2000 (starring Melanie Griffith)—which are being released on Blu-ray this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has another underrated genre gem getting the HD treatment as well—the horror western Ghost Town.

For all you MST3K fans out there, Shout! Factory is putting out another collection of campy films that you’ll be able to add to your collections this week and Bayview Entertainment also has a double feature of cult movies from Germany—Strangler of the Tower / Monster of London—arriving on DVD.

Julie Kirkham, who produced such films as Cherry 2000, Black Rain and Anna and the King and served as an executive for Lawrence Bender and Quentin Tarantino, has died. She was 61. Kirkham died June 10 after recently being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, her friend, Black Rain screenwriter Craig Bolotin, said.    Kirkham began as a script reader in Hollywood. From anime to pitch-black thrillers, here's our pick of the underappreciated movies of 1987...

Sometimes, the challenge with these lists isn't just what to put in, but what to leave out. We loved Princess Bride, but with a decent showing at the box office and a huge cult following, isn't it a bit too popular to be described as underappreciated? Likewise Joe Dante's Innerspace, a fabulously geeky, comic reworking of the 60s sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage.

What we've gone for instead is a mix of genre fare, dramas and animated films that may have garnered a cult following since, but didn't do well either critically or financially at the time of release. Some of the movies on our list just about made their money back, but none made anything close to the sort of returns enjoyed by the likes of 1987's biggest films - Three Men And A Baby, Fatal Attraction...

Brad Pitt has signed on to produce the sci-fi thriller Alpha through his Plan B Productions, with Canadian filmmaker Anthony Scott Burns set to make his feature directorial debut. It isn't known if Brad Pitt plans on starring in Alpha at this time, but he will produce with his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.

Robopocalypse author Daniel H. Wilson came up with the original story and will write the screenplay himself. While no specific story details were given, the plot is said to be a sci-fi survival tale that is compared to the works of Jack London (Call of the Wild, White Fang).

Recently I published an article about forgotten movie robots. Ironically enough, I let a few incredible robots slip my mind (as a thoughtful commenter or two have pointed out). Romeo and Juliet

"Let Me In" and "The Road" actor Kodi Smit-McPhee is in early discussions to play Romeo's cousin Benvolio in the latest adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet".

Benvolio is Romeo's cousin who futilely tries to keep the peace between Tybalt (Ed Westwick) and Mercutio. Hailee Steinfeld and Holly Hunter have already been cast as Juliet and her nurse respectively.

Cherry 2000 was a pretty forgettable sc-fi film starring Melanie Griffith from 1987. It looks as though a remake is being considered by producer Ed Pressman, who has reached out to a few stars including Griffith. Surprisinly theactress recommmended her daughter, Dakota Johnson, take on the role.

Some parents want bigger and better for their children. In the case of Melanie Griffith, she would be happy if her offspring followed in her footsteps. Literally. According to Showbiz 411, a remake of the 1987 film "Cherry 2000" is possibly in the works. Producer Ed Pressman is apparently "considering it" and has been talking to a few folks, including the aforementioned star of the film who has suggested Dakota Johnson for the lead role. You may recall Johnson as that-girl-who-slept-with-Sean-Parker in "The Social Network," but she's quickly on the rise with roles in "Five Year Engagement" and "21 Jump…...

Monthly badass genre film festival BleedFest continues its quest for gender equality in movies and moviemaking with its March 2011 charity and screening event. The theme of BleedFest's March 6th event is FantAsian: Fantasy and musicals by female Asian filmmakers.

Deepika Daggubati will be present for a Q &A after her fantasy musical feature Waking Dreams, as will Anna Biller for a retrospective of her subversive retro shorts including Three Examples Of Myself As Queen. Carly Lyn will receive her Inanna Award statue for A Foundling, and Nora Jesse will receive the Best Producer certificate award for her satirical short Grandpa.

We're inclined to take this next story with a big grain of salt; still, it's just interesting enough to warrant some examination. The folks over at What's Playing ran a provocative story over the past 24 hours in which they describe some significant plot points from Ridley Scott's forthcoming Alien prequel. And some of those languorous details might not be a direction in which you'd expect Scott to go in a film that he contends will rival the original Alien for sophistication and terror.

Normally, we'd call bollocks on this, but we're inclined to agree with the folks over at JoBlo — who also speculated on this story — who pointed out that 20th Century Fox forced What's Playing to take the story down. The obvious point being: why ask a site to take something down unless it contains sensitive spoilers?

Ok, I'm not going to lie to you: today's recommendation for Free Flick of the Day, Cherry 2000, isn't exactly what you would call a good movie. But before you scroll away, keep in mind, sometimes a bad movie can be as much fun as a good one -- and as bad movies go, Cherry 2000 is one of the best. The 1987 sci-fi action flick was directed by Steve De Jarnatt (director of the Canadian classic Strange Brew) and centers on a pampered businessman living in the distant future of (gasp!) 2017 who hires a sexy bad-ass tracker (played for some reason by Melanie Griffith) to help him find a replacement sex doll (sorry...sex robot, much better) after his top of the line 'Cherry 2000' shorts out in the laundry room. And yes, you read that entire plot right.

A 3D movie involving sharks and a big-breasted blonde's boobs? Shouldn't The Buz be writing this story? Is there even a story here? There will be if Heidi Montag has it her way. God help us.

With MTV canceling "The Hills" after six culture decaying seasons, Heidi Montag now has to come up with some other means by which to remain in the public spotlight and pay off what must be her astronomical plastic surgery bills. I believe Montag is composed of enough synthetics by this point to legally change her name to Cherry 2000.

Having already failed to launch a singing career, Montag (seen in the accompanying photo looking like an unplugged Stepford Wife) has set her sights on Hollywood, and not just acting. She's written a screenplay for a movie she plans to star in about her Ddd breast implants defeating a man-eating shark. You think I'm making this up?...

What do Terminators, Replicants and Surrogates have in common? They're all what Blade Runner's Captain Bryant would call "skin jobs." And whether they're killing humans, getting killed by humans or living life for humans, most movie robots benefit from that scifi staple, the artificial epidermis. Without it, Cherry 2000 wouldn't look like the perfect girlfriend and Bicentennial Man wouldn't look like Robin Williams. So far, real-life robots with skin jobs...

"Queen of the Galaxy" is a tough moniker to live up to, but if anyone can do it, Barbarella can. She has to deal with murderous children and their killer dolls, horny aliens, a blind (albeit hot) angel, and Anita Pallenberg as an eyepatch wearing assassin who Really wants to get to know her. Best of all, she shows us the proper way to strip in zero gravity, and you can see it Here, in one of the greatest (and mildly Nsfw) openings in film history.
