Off Broadway’s much-honored Atlantic Theater Company and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees have reached a tentative agreement that could see the Atlantic become the first-ever not-for-profit theater company producing solely Off Broadway shows to have such a union agreement.
The tentative agreement – pending approval via ratification by the workers – covers nearly 100 production workers employed by the company. If ratified, the agreement will end a strike that began in January after months of negotiations stalled. The Atlantic’s crew voted nearly unanimously to unionize with IATSE in February 2024.
In a joint statement, the Atlantic and IATSE said the proposed agreement includes “significant compensation increases including comprehensive benefits that both parties believe reflect the essential contributions of the production crew to Atlantic Theater Company’s success.”
Full details of the agreement will be made available to the workers and organization stakeholders in the coming days, according to the statement.

Prepare to volunteer as tribute in person, as the world of Panem is heading to the stage. The Hunger Games: On Stage, the first-ever live adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ internationally acclaimed novel and Lionsgate’s blockbuster film franchise, will premiere on October 20, 2025, at the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre in London. The 1,200-seat venue, which has been specially designed for groundbreaking productions, will immerse audiences in the dystopian world like never before, although hopefully all 1,200 make it out of the venue, and not just one of them. The adaptation comes from Conor McPherson—no relation to this author —the multi-award-winning playwright behind Girl from the North Country and The Weir. The production will be directed by Matthew Dunster. McPherson’s adaptation draws directly from Collins’ novel, so it should be distinctly different from the film's screenplay.

Sandra Bullock is one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, and any movie with her name included in its cast can be blindly considered a hit. Well… let’s say not all of them. Either way, Bullock has racked up millions over the years acting in projects like Bird Box, The Blind Side, Miss Congeniality, and many more.

Sandra Bullock's name above the title has meant mega-bucks for movie studios over the last 37 years. Combined, her movies have grossed billions of dollars at the global box office, making her one of the most bankable stars of her generation. She's done it by mostly exhibiting good taste in material and, of course, being her irresistibly bubbly self. Everyone, it seems, loves Sandy.
Bullock has a lot to be proud of (most notably the Best Actress Oscar she won for 2009's "The Blind Side"), but when it comes to her bombs, she'll be the first to tell you how lousy they are. She's earned the right to dish on disappointments like "All About Steve," "Two If By Sea" and, dear god, George Sluizer's Hollywoodized remake of his masterful Dutch thriller "The Vanishing." Hang around long enough in the film industry, and you're bound to appear in a stinker or two.

The Blind Side is a 2009 drama film that tells the true story of Michael Oher, a young African-American man from a poor upbringing who is taken in by a white family in Memphis, Tennessee. The film stars Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy, the family's matriarch, and features a supporting cast that includes Tim McGraw, Kathy Bates, Jae Head, Lily Collins, and Ray McKinnon. The film, directed by John Lee Hancock, is based on the 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis.
Even years after its 2009 release, The Blind Side is still honored as a classic film, primarily due to its stellar and iconic cast. Based on the book of the same name by Michael Lewis, The Blind Side is based on the true story of offensive lineman Michael Oher, who was taken in and educated by the Tuohy family in the early 2000s. London is volunteering as tribute to host the first-ever stage adaptation of “The Hunger Games,” a play based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling books and the Jennifer Lawrence-led blockbuster film franchise.
Matthew Dunster (“Hangmen”) is directing and playwright Conor McPherson (“Girl From the North Country”) is adapting the live theatrical production. (And may the odds be ever in their favor.) It will make its debut in London in the fall of 2024.
The play will be based on the first book in Collins’ dystopian series revolving around a televised battle royale in which young tributes are selected via lottery to fight to the death. The story picks up as Katniss Everdeen, a role that propelled Lawrence to stardom, volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the 74th annual Hunger Games. A press release calls the stage version a “gripping tale of courage, defiance, and the unbreakable human spirit.”

The elite and prestitious graduate acting program of New York’s The Julliard School will go tuition-free beginning this fall, a massive shift in the economics of arts schooling and student opportunities.
The school announced the move today, explaining that the four-year masters program, which currently costs each student about $53,300 per year, will eliminate the tuition after having raised $15 million including key gifts from Broadway theater producers Stephanie P. McClelland and John Gore.

Martin McDonagh, the British-Irish Tony-nominated playwright and Oscar-nominated filmmaker who often sets his work in Ireland, is the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February. The 52-year-old was being honored by the fest as one of its Outstanding Directors of the Year Award recipients in recognition of his work on 2022’s The Banshees of Inisherin, for which he is currently nominated for producing, directing and writing Oscars.

You can tell that it's August since more and more 'prestige' projects are revealing themselves and the fall film season is looking mighty tasty. Today the first poster and trailer to Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin. We don't know how Martin McDonagh keeps getting away with memorable film titles when Hollywood loves nothing more than to rename projects something utterly generic the title alone works wonders. What does it mean exactly in this context? It's so evocative and Irish, too. This is McDonagh's first film since his mainstream breakthrough with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) though he was of course already an Oscar winner before that film via his short film Six Shooter (2004). Curiously he has yet to win a Tony despite five of his projects being nominated for Best Play.

While most of the shows reported drops, the overall figure also reflects four fewer productions than the previous week’s roster, with Birthday Candles, Mrs. Doubtfire and The Skin of Our Teeth having closed and Mr. Saturday Night, starring Billy Crystal, on a planned hiatus for the week.
Overall, attendance was at about 81 of capacity. Shows that filled more than 90 of their seats were Aladdin, Hadestown, Hamilton, Mj, Chicago, Moulin Rouge!, Plaza Suite, Six, Take Me Out, The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, The Music Man and Wicked. A Strange Loop came close at 89.
Productions dropping below the 70 capacity mark were Beetlejuice, Come From Away, Company, Girl From The North Country, The Minutes and Paradise Square, among others, with...

Both figures for the week ending May 29 indicate a less-than-1 change from the previous week.
Overall, the productions played to about 83 of capacity, pretty much in keeping with recent trends. Average ticket price was 129.94.
Three shows played their final performances: Birthday Candles starring Debra Messing took in 328,372, a boost of 57,735 over the previous week, with attendance at 81 of capacity during the last week of its limited engagement. In one of this Broadway season’s most startling on-stage moments, Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen takes a swift and no-turning back move, a Psycho-like turn shortly after the start of the play that re-directs everything. A character we might have initially believed to be the center of the story is done away with, dispatched by one the executioners who give Hangmen its title. Only slightly less startling: That doomed character will, in fact, be the story’s center, both by his subsequent absence and by the questions left hanging with him: Was he guilty of the murder that brought him to the gallows? And does murder ever justify murder?
It’s a classic McDonagh moment – startling, visceral, deeply unsettling and against all odds, a bit funny: No sooner is the poor man sent to his doom than the executioner, one Harry Wade, uses the occasion for a moment of professional pride.

Broadway’s 2021-22 season – 10 weeks shorter than usual, plagued by Covid and the cancelations it caused, not to mention the tourists who didn’t show up – took a beating at the box office, with season-end numbers no less stark for being expected: The industry took in a total of 845,354,915 at the box office, down about 54 from the the historic high of 1.829 billion set by the 2018-19 Broadway season (the last full season prior to the 2020 pandemic shutdown).
Figures compiled by the Broadway League released today indicate that total attendance for the season was 6,729,143, also down 54 from the 2019 record high of 14,768,254. Despite the year-to-year downturn, the percentage of available seats that were filled during the 2021-22 season was a solid 82.

Winners of the 88th Annual Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 20 2022 at a ceremony hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2021-2022 theater season.
Tony Awards frontrunners mostly dominated the production categories. Best Musical went to “A Strange Loop,” Best Play went to “The Lehman Trilogy,” and Best Revival of a Musical was handed to “Company.” The Second Stage Theater production of “Take Me Out” prevailed in the hotly competitive Best Revival of a Play category.
The winners of the Drama League’s inaugural categories for direction of a musical and play went to Marianne Elliott (“Company”) and Kate Whoriskey (“Clyde’s”), respectively. Elliott sits far out front in the corresponding Tony race, though Whoriskey’s triumph comes as a surprise. This frequent collaborator of Lynn Nottage failed to earn a Tony nomination,...

Last week’s Tony Award nominations translated into box office sales for at least some of the contenders, with A Strange Loop seeing the biggest boost. The musical, which topped the Tony list with 11 nominations, saw a 213,871 increase in its weekly grosses, taking in 690,668 for the week ending May 15.
Overall, the 35 Broadway productions grossed 30,349,653, a slight 3 dip from the previous week’s 31,199,660, a decline largely attributable to the 1,054,792 drop in box office at Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which canceled four of its usual eight performances due to Covid cases among the cast. Moulin, with Broadway favorite Derek Klena now leading the cast, took in 537,705 for four performances, filling 91 of available seats.
Also losing ground was Lincoln Center Theater’s The Skin of Our Teeth, which canceled three performances due to Covid, dropping 58,736 from the previous week to 115,745 for its five performances.

The 2022 Tony Award nominations have been unveiled and, per usual, we have opinions! Susan Haskins joined us in a lively discussion to dissect this crop of nominees. Samuel D. Hunter’s A Case for the Existence of God was named best play of the 2021-22 season today by the the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, with David Lindsay-Abaire’s and Jeanine Tesori’s Kimberly Akimbo chosen as best musical.
Two special citations were awarded by the group, one to stage and film veteran Austin Pendleton, currently co-starring on Broadway in The Minutes, and a citation for emerging talent to Sanaz Toossi for two plays produced this year, English and Wish You Were Here.
The selections skewed away from Broadway’s Tony Award contenders this year, at least in part because many of those shows – including The Lehman Trilogy, A Strange Loop, Hangmen and Skeleton Crew – were recognized or eligible by the Circle in previous years for productions outside of Broadway, and thus ineligible for consideration this year.
Kimberly Akimbo will be staged on Broadway in fall 2022.

With nearly all 36 productions settling into full schedules last week, the Broadway box office tally climbed a modest 7 from the previous week, totaling 31,199,660, with attendance of 249,219 showing a 3 bump.
The attendance figure represents about 76 of available seats, indicating that the recently crowded line-up could be spreading the audience pool a bit thin. Only eight productions approached sell-out status during the week ending May 8 – the week, notably, before Tony Award nominations were announced – including the usual roster of hits: The Music Man, The Lion King, Six, Plaza Suite, Moulin Rouge!, Macbeth, Hadestown and Funny Girl. Hamilton, Aladdin, Mj and The Book of Mormon did well, filling at least 90 of their seats.
A wide swath of the productions, even some of the best-reviewed shows of the spring, were playing to more than a few empty seats: In the 60-70 of capacity ranges were A Strange Loop, American Buffalo, Beetlejuice, Birthday Candles, Come From Away,...

Photo: 2022 Tony Nominees The Awards Picture The Tony Nominees were announced the morning of May 9th by Adrienne Warren and Joshua Henry. A Strange Loop garnered the most nominations, eleven, and was closely followed by Paradise Square and Mj, each of which earned ten. Though A Strange Loop seems set up to take home the most awards, the nominations are pretty spread out this year, and the competition is far from one-sided. The Company revival and Six: The Musical have both been sensations, and the Bob Dylan jukebox musical Girl From the North Country is gorgeous, if humbler than some of the other nominated musicals. As for plays, The Lehman Trilogy earned the most nominations with eight, but was followed closely by both revivals and other new plays. In a Broadway season so crowded with exceptional productions – 34 musicals, plays, and revivals opened during the 2021-2022 eligibility window – it is no surprise that the 29 Tony Awards nominators caught theatre enthusiasts off guard with some of their choices. Below we catalog the biggest 2022 Tony Awards nominations surprises.
Among the plays, the biggest jaw-dropper was the sheer number of contenders in the Best Actor category. The extraordinarily tight race was slated to have only five nominees, but razor thin margins between the top vote-getters led to that race being expanded to a lucky seven fellows: Simon Russell Beal, Adam Godley, and Adrian Lester who comprise the entire main cast of “The Lehman Trilogy,” David Morse from “How I Learned to Drive,” Sam Rockwell from “American Buffalo,” Ruben Santiago-Hudson for his one-man show “Lackawanna Blues,” and David Threlfall from “Hangmen.”

With the 2022 Tony Awards nomination announcement just days away, Broadway watchers are scrambling to finalize their predictions after a stellar season on the rialto. To help guide us through the ups and downs of the major Tony categories, I am joined by Michael Musto, Brian Lipton (Cititour) and my Gold Derby colleague David Buchanan for a heated debate. Which productions and performers will receive happy news on Monday, May 9 when nominations are announced? Watch our 2022 Tony Awards slugfest above with final nominations predictions.
With “The Lehman Trilogy” far out front in the Best Play race, I wonder aloud how many other plays from the dynamite first half of the season will make the cut this year. “I think this is one season, based on the buzz, where they are going to remember things that are close,” suggests Musto. Normally Tony voters prefer shows which are still open, and still generating income.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the last time before Monday’s nomination announcements, making some final eligibility determinations for shows including the stars of American Buffalo, Hangmen and How I Learned To Drive, among others.
Among the rulings: American Buffalo actor Darren Criss will be considered eligible as a featured player in a play, apparently leaving co-stars Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell to the lead category.
For Hangmen, which features a large ensemble of actors with Alfie Allen in the central role of a possible killer, co-star David Threlfall, who plays one of the executioners of the title, will be eligible in the leading actor/play category. Both Allen and Threlfall received excellent reviews.

“I really like quirky little things that have never been done before,” explains “Hangmen” star Tracie Bennett. The Tony-nominated actress has enjoyed a varied career on stage, which has seen her oscillate between musicals and dramas, “swirling these little plates of variety,” as she puts it. She recently opened Martin McDonagh’s new dark comedy on Broadway, which puts all of her skills to use as the owner of a small town pub. The combination of the playwright’s dark humor with the technical requirements of the production, makes for a one-of-a-kind challenge for the actress. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Broadway box office was down 15 last week, with even some of the biggest hit shows reporting slips for the week ending May 1. In all, the 36 shows grossed 29,072,410.
Likely reflecting a slimming down of spring break and Easter tourist business, attendance was off by 10 last week from the previous week, coming in at 241,500. That number suggests that only 75 of available seats were filled, a significantly lower figure than the 85+ numbers reported earlier this spring.
Also impacting receipts was the large number of opening nights, with press comps and other freebies eating into the figures at The Skin of Our Teeth, A Strange Loop, Potus, Mr. Saturday Night and Macbeth. The Tony Award eligibility cut-off date is May 4.
The average ticket price for the roster was down as well, to 120 from the previous week’s 128.
Some productions, of course, took steeper drops than others: Beetlejuice was down by more than 492,698 from the previous week,...

“I love the darkness of it. I love the morbidness of it. But also, there’s a warmth to it,” says Alfie Allen as he describes the new play “Hangmen.” The actor plays Mooney, a mysterious presence in Martin McDonagh’s latest Broadway outing, who disrupts the “familial” pub run by ex-hangman Harry (David Threlfall). Navigating McDonagh’s trademark style eight times a week is proving to be a thrilling challenge for Allen. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Allen first saw “Hangmen” about six years ago when it played the West End. “I loved the relationship between [Mooney] and Harry Wade,” reveals the actor. When he eventually started rehearsals for the Broadway outing, he “had to kind of just forget that I had watched the play.” There is an enigmatic nature about Mooney that he is excited to be “coming at from a new angle.” He describes his character, and...

“She was such a trailblazer,” says Carmen Cusack of Clare Booth Luce. The Tony-nominated actress (“Bright Star”) played the multifaceted author and politician in the musical “Flying Over Sunset.” The one of a kind show explores the surprising ways in which Luce (along with Cary Grant and Aldous Huxley) experimented with LSD as a form of therapy. “I couldn’t believe I had never heard of her,” reveals Cusack, “she was doing it all. She was navigating the political climate when there were no other women in that situation.” By exploring Luce’s highs and lows on stage, she developed a deep appreciation for this “fascinating” woman. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Two years after its premature pandemic closure, Martin McDonagh’s play “Hangmen” has slipped the proverbial noose and returned to Broadway in a plot twist you might think McDonagh wrote himself. The unexpected resurrection of this dark comedy about the cessation of the death penalty in England in 1965 stars a slightly different cast than it did back in March 2020: David Threlfall has stepped into the shoes of the hangman played by Mark Addy, while Alfie Allen takes over the menacing character Mooney that Dan Stevens once embodied.
These two characters come to loggerheads when they meet in the bar that Threlfall’s Harry runs in his early retirement, while a subsequent kidnapping plot propels both characters to make fateful decisions. Matthew Dunster directs the thriller, which also features original Broadway cast members Tracie Bennett, Gaby French, and many others. “Hangmen” opened at the Golden Theatre on April 21.

Broadway box office held steady last week as the production roster reached its full, 35-show season maximum: Though some productions remained in previews, everything that’s going to open before the end of the season was up and running, with no Covid cancelations or postponements.
In all, the 35 productions grossed a total 34,204,820, with attendance at 267,796 for the week ending April 24. Both of those figures were just about dead-even with the previous week’s tallies, with one additional show on the roster – Paradise Square returned after some Covid cancelations – and a slate of opening nights causing small dips due to press and opening night comps.
With an overall average ticket price of 128, the 35 productions combined filled about 84 of available seats, just a tad short of the previous week’s percentage (87).
The following productions had opening nights last week:
How I Learned To Drive, filling about 90 of seats, took in 265,830; for colored...

The 2022 Outer Critics Circle nominations were announced Tuesday. They honor the best of the 2021-2022 Broadway and Off-Broadway season. “The Lehman Trilogy” scored the most nominations with nine bids, followed closely by the Off-Broadway musicals “Harmony” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” which scored eight nominations apiece.
Special Achievement Awards will be presented to “How I Learned to Drive” stars Johanna Day, David Morse and Mary-Louise Parker, as well as “Lackawanna Blues” star Ruben Santiago-Hudson, to mark their outstanding returns to roles they originated two decades ago. Since these actors were eligible for the original runs of these shows, the Outer Critics Circle has opted to take them out of contention for this year’s awards.

The Drama Leauge announced the nominations for the 2022 Drama League Awards on Monday morning. Deneé Benton and André DeShields announced the nominees at this morning’s official event at The New York Library for the Performing Arts. The Drama League honors both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions in their annual celebration. Winners will be announced at the 88th Annual Drama League Awards, which will be held at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 20.
While the League doles out four production prizes, what makes them unique is their “Distinguished Performance” award. Up to fifty performers are nominated for the honor each year in a category that combines roles of all genders and sizes. An actor can only win this prize once in their career, and once they have prevailed they can not be nominated again. This year, forty three performers contend in the category.
