Anil Kapoor is one of the biggest names in Bollywood history and has always been known for his commitment to roles. Throughout his illustrious career, he has played numerous characters but there was one particular decision that left both him and his audience in shock. The actor, who has sported a signature moustache for most of his career, made a bold choice to shave it off for Yash Chopra’s 1991 film Lamhe.
Starring alongside Sridevi, Kapoor took on a character that required a fresh look, a decision that did not sit well with audiences at the time. The film was a box-office disappointment upon its release, largely due to its unconventional storyline. However, Kapoor believes that his changed appearance also played a role in how the film was received. Decades later, Lamhe has found appreciation as a cult classic, but Kapoor still recalls...

Sridevi Mom Movie (Photo Credit – Zee5)
Sridevi remains one of Indian cinema’s most iconic and celebrated actresses. With a career spanning five decades, she captivated audiences with her versatility, elegance, and powerful performances in films like Chandni, Mr. India, Sadma, and English Vinglish. Her tragic passing in 2018 left a void in the industry, but her legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.
While her final appearance was a brief cameo in Zero, her last full-fledged role was in Mom (2017), a revenge thriller directed by Ravi Udyawar. The film, which earned Sridevi the National Film Award for Best Actress posthumously, showcased her in one of her most intense performances. Recently, Mom’s screenplay writer, Girish Kohli, opened up about the biggest challenge of working on the film, revealing a unique disadvantage that came with having a superstar like Sridevi in the lead role.

In another fabulous installment of This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha celebrates 28 Years Of Sridevi’s Finest Performance in Judaii.
In Sridevi’s oeuvre, Judaii is not regarded as one of her great performances. It’s a below-average film lifted to likeability by the central performance. I regard Sridevi in Judaii to be superior to her lauded performances in Chandni, Sadma, Lamhe and Mr India.
The truth is she is earth-shatteringly good as a screechy, overbearing housewife who loses her husband to greed.
Speaking of Sri in slush, Judaii, directed by the late Raj Kanwar (nice guy) and produced by Sri’s darling husband Boney, is a textbook on politically incorrect filmmaking, with Sri playing a human banshee screaming and swearing at her working-class husband Anil Kapoor until he marries the moneyed Urmila Matondkar. Her last hurrah before she bowed out to play wife and mother. Judaii is a...

In this special feature, Subhash K Jha remembers the exceptional actress Sridevi.
Seven years have passed since Sridevi’s left us suddenly. Not a day passes when we are not reminded of her ubiquitousness…That snatch of a song from Sadma, the cute quirky clipping from Judaai, that melodramatic confrontation scene with the late Smita Patil(they must be exchanging notes in heaven) in the long-forgotten Nazrana which Raveena’s dad Ravi Tandon directed….I know of no other actor in the world who could rise so much above the script. So high she touched the sky, and we gazed from down below, always awestruck by her arresting artistry.
How did she do it? The great Kamal Haasan once told me it was the art of mimicry. “She’s a fantastic observer. Whenever she is working with me, she keeps observing and absorbing, and then she uses the quirks and...

In his 30-year career as an actor Amrish Puri did over 200 films. In his early years, most of the work he did was either quality-oriented work for the avant-garde directors Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani or outright kitsch, where he used his powerful voice and screen presence to accentuate the cinematic definitions of evil. Puri’s truly fertile phase as Bollywood’s most dependable character-actor, or actor of character, began in 1992. Here’s a checklist of his best films.
Nishant (1975):Playing the eldest brother in a family of zaalim(cruel) zamindars who abduct and rape a schoolteacher’s wife, Amrish Puri struck a note of immediate and everlasting terror in viewers’ hearts. Though the film had other terrific actors it was Puri who dominated the show in every way possible. Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Boney Kapoor made a few cult classic movies back in the 90s. Their most memorable collaborations were Mr India and Judaai. However, according to media reports, Anil was advised against doing both films. Boney was already involved with Sridevi during the movies. The annual International Film Festival of India (Iffi) and the overlapping project market Film Bazaar have concluded what has been possibly their most successful editions yet and Variety was on hand to report on the proceedings. Here are some takeaways from the events.
Global Interest in Indian Stories
The international appeal of India-themed narratives, whether Indian-funded or international co-productions, continues to grow, with films including “All We Imagine as Light” and “Girls Will Be Girls” gaining recognition at global festivals. “The success of something like ‘All We Imagine as Light’ increases the possibility for your film to be selected, because it’s driven a fever around Indian cinema right now. It is a real interest,” said Marten Rabarts, head of IFFR Pro, the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s market strand, at a Film Bazaar panel.

The democratizing potential and creative implications of artificial intelligence took center stage during a panel discussion at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa, with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who serves as festival director, “Ship of Theseus” director Anand Gandhi and OpenAI’s Pragya Misra exploring AI’s impact on filmmaking.
Kapur said that AI recently helped generate the best plot outline he had received for a potential “Mr. India” sequel. “ChatGPT actually gave me the best plot for ‘Mr. India 2,’ better than most of the big name, well-paid writers,” said Kapur, who directed the 1987 original.
Misra demonstrated OpenAI’s text-to-video model Sora, which within seconds can generate minute-long videos from text prompts. While not yet publicly available, the tool is being tested with selected filmmakers. “What you’re going to see today is probably the worst version of the model you’re ever going to see. We’re...

One of the highlights at India’s Cinevesture International Film Festival and market was a frank, philosophical on-stage chat between veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and his singer-songwriter-composer daughter Kaveri.
Shekhar Kapur is known for his eclectic oeuvre that spans Indian films “Masoom” and “Mr. India,” hard-hitting biopic “Bandit Queen,” the Oscar-winning “Elizabeth,” starring Cate Blanchett, “The Four Feathers,” starring Heath Ledger, and recent romcom “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”
When asked to reveal something unknown about himself, Shekhar Kapur spoke about his hidden fears, saying that people who think he is cool don’t “see the panic in my head every morning.”
“Fear drives me. I find panic is a huge form of creativity. When I, for example, shoot a film, I plan like a general going to war because you never know where the bullet is coming from. And then when I get to the set… suddenly,...

Anil Kapoor’s Fighting Spirit: On Four Decades of Film, the ‘Slumdog’ Effect, and One Heck of a Year
Anil Kapoor still gets meetings he can trace back to “Slumdog Millionaire.”
Chatting with IndieWire shortly after the premiere of Viacom18’s “Fighter,” the Indian actor is one of the rare global stars to enjoy “crossover success” — a buzzy term that, these days, seems to mean less crossing over and more crossing back-and-forth. Indian film stars, once compelled to journey West to Hollywood, now enjoy rich storytelling opportunities at home that also exist abroad. Between “Fighter,” “Animal,” a remake of “The Night Manager,” and daughter Rhea’s TIFF premiere, Kapoor’s last 12 months demonstrate the diversity of projects available for Indian actors today — though he still gets the most worldwide acknowledgement for “Slumdog.”
“I get really surprised sometimes at the kind of people who still know me, still remember me, and want to work with me. It’s still continuing,” Kapoor told IndieWire. “As a matter of fact, I insist...
