If horror movies have taught us anything it’s this: Don’t go anywhere. Don’t leave your house, and if you do leave your house, don’t leave your hometown. And if you do leave your hometown, don’t go out to the middle of nowhere. And if you do go out to the middle of nowhere and someone asks you all to surrender your cell phones, skip to the end and run away in terror right now. It’ll save everybody — you and the killer cultists included — a lot of bother.

Though they don't have nearly as many big-screen appearances as zombies or vampires, werewolves are still popular characters depicted in several films. It's not always the case, but most films with the hairy supernatural species show the werewolf characters as ordinary people turning into vicious killers. However, it's not a rule that werewolf stories must be told within the horror genre. Films like Teen Wolf have used lycanthropy to tell relatable coming-of-age stories through a comedic lens.
Stories of lycanthropy align with the 1980s cultural shift when conversations around sex and puberty were seeping into pop culture. Many of the '80s werewolf films deal with supernatural characters entering a new phase of life, with the physical transformation from human to wolf being representative of this change. Many of these transformations depicted in '80s werewolf films are presented as being painful, which happens to pair well with gory imagery typically associated with horror films.

Stephen King is wildly prolific. That may be an understatement but it's still worth pointing out. Not only does the man have an impressive level of output, but King's stuff is consistently very popular. As such, for virtually as long as he's been a writer, his works have been adapted for the screen, both big and small. Sometimes that goes well, with King being particularly fond of "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Stand By Me," as a couple of examples. Naturally, Hollywood being Hollywood, those adaptations aren't going to work sometimes. For his part, King was willing to call at least one of them an outright trainwreck.
In a 2007 interview with Time, King was asked about quality control as it relates to adaptations of his work. For starters, the author made it clear that he doesn't generally maintain a lot of control in that department.

Stephen King’s 1975 novel gets its first big screen treatment, courtesy of Gary Dauberman. Here’s our Salem’s Lot review.
There’s a particular flavour of horror films that don’t often get a lot of appreciation, especially as so-called “elevated horror” dominates the screens and critics’ notebooks. These horrors aren’t necessarily what we’d call good in the most traditional sense, but they’re perfectly fine and most importantly, hugely accessible for everyone.
Which brings us to Salem’s Lot, Gary Dauberman’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 vampire novel. Dauberman’s version of Salem’s Lot is the first time the book has been adapted to the big screen, although a shortened version of the 1979 miniseries did enjoy a short stint in cinemas, as did a feature film sequel to the miniseries, A Return To Salem’s Lot.

Stephen King's Salem's Lot is his quintessential vampire story, with adaptations of the story ranging in quality. The book, about a small town in Maine beset with horrifying versions of vampires, has so far been adapted into two TV miniseries, a prequel show, and two movies. King has written several vampire tales at this point, but Salem's Lot remains a fan favorite that influenced generations of vampire storytelling. It was only King's second published novel, released in 1975. It's also just a really good book, showing right away just how formidable a presence in horror King was destined to become.
As good and scary as Salem's Lot's Barlow is, the story has never been adapted definitively. While the 1979 TV miniseries is well-remembered, critics and fans bemoaned some elements that failed to match the original novel. Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. The sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material, so they’re all disqualified. We...

At this point in his illustrious career, Stephen King has seen so many of his novels, short stories, and even a few screenplays produced by Hollywood that not only have many of those movies already been remade, but some of those remakes have remakes of their own. The sheer number of adaptations that have been made out of King's work has made one thing abundantly clear: not all of them are hits. And guess what? The author, himself, knows it.

Misery has a new number one fan. Just in time for Halloween, the acclaimed 1990 Stephen King adaptation can now be viewed on a new streamer.
Directed by Rob Reiner, Misery is now streaming on Max. The psychological thriller, which is based on King's 1987 novel of the same name, stars James Caan as an author who is held captive by an obsessive fan, played by Kathy Bates, who forces him to rewrite the finale to his novel series. Bates' performance as the crazed fan, Annie Wilkes, was widely praised by critics, leading her to win the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 63rd Academy Awards. Misery remains the only movie based on a King novel to win an Oscar.

Stephen King is celebrating the release of the long-delayed adaptation of Salem's Lot with an excited new post about the upcoming movie. Originally completing filming in 2022, the upcoming Salem's Lot remake is finally getting released on Max after multiple delays in its release schedule. While the movie was supposed to arrive in theaters, its continuous delayed release due to calendar shifts and the 2023 Hollywood strikes resulted in the movie going to streaming instead. However, it's still highly-anticipated due to it being the first movie adaptation of the King novel, following two TV miniseries in 1979 and 2004.
Now, King himself has posted about the Salem's Lot remake, expressing excitement for the delayed adaptation by posing with a framed poster of the film. He can also be seen holding a small toy of Dracula, referencing how the original novel came from the idea of having the famous vampire arrive in America during the 20th century.

The 2024 feature film adaptation of Stephen King's second novel 'Salem's Lot will hit Max on October 3, but until then there are plenty of ways for fans to explore the vampire-infested village. It was the setting for the novel and two short stories; two TV miniseries; an oddball '80s movie sequel; and even a radio play co-starring Hellraiser's biggest icon. The author has even hinted that the legacy of the town extends through more books than most people know.
The 1975 novel was adapted for television in 1979 and 2004, and the short story was adapted in 2021. In 1987, cult movie king Larry Cohen directed legendary filmmaker Sam Fuller in a black comedy sequel, and in 1994 the BBC staged a seven-part radio play starring Doug Bradley Hellraiser's original Pinhead as the terrifying Barlow. And King has responded to questions about a 'Salem's Lot sequel with hints about his Dark Tower novels.

Stephen King is vocal about his dissatisfaction with adaptations that fail to capture the essence of his stories and vision. Some of King's own adaptations, such as Maximum Overdrive, have been critically panned, leading him to openly criticize his own work. King's criticisms of adaptations range from changes to the story and characters to overall poor execution, regardless of the filmmakers involved.
Stephen King is responsible for a growing number of movies inspired by his stories, but when the adaptation fails to capture his vision, he is often among the first to speak out against it. King has been writing novels and short stories since 1967, when he sold his first short story. Following that, his debut novel, Carrie, was released in 1974, and in 1976, it received a film adaptation that kicked off King's legacy as the Master of Horror.
Since then, King's work has been adapted for both film and TV in more than 100 different projects.

The decision to forgo a theatrical release and stream the film instead indicates that Salem's Lot may not be strong enough to be successful with audiences and critics. The failure of Salem's Lot is not surprising, as recent Stephen King adaptations have not lived up to the quality of previous adaptations like Gerald's Game, It, It: Chapter Two, and Doctor Sleep. Let's hope this marks the end of half-hearted Stephen King adaptations.
Though anticipation was high for the newest film adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot, recent bad news means that this could be yet another flopped King adaptation. Since 1974, Stephen King has penned some of the most popular horror stories in recent literary history, many of which have been brought to the big screen,...

Alfre Woodard has boarded the cast of Salem's Lot, an upcoming movie adaptation at New Line based on the novel by Stephen King. The Oscar-nominated actress has reportedly been cast in the role of Dr. Cody, who's depicted as a male character named Dr. Jimmy Cody in the original King novel. Another version of Dr. Cody was played by Robert Mammone in the 2004 miniseries adaptation.
Several other cast members for the new Salem's Lot have also been announced. Lewis Pullman was cast as Ben Mears. Other actors attached include Makenzie Leigh as Susan Norton, Bill Camp as Matt Burke, and Spencer Treat Clark as Mike Ryerson. New Line's Salem's Lot movie has secured Lewis Pullman for the lead role. Salem's Lot follows Ben Mears (Pullman), a man who "returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem's Lot in search of inspiration for his next book only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a vampire, leading him to band together a ragtag group that will fight the evil presence." This is similar to the original 1975 novel by Stephen King and the subsequent miniseries adaptation.
Based on the Stephen King novel, the new script for New Line's movie comes from Gary Dauberman. He previously found success with tackling King's work as the writer of It and It: Chapter Two, both of which were very well received. Dauberman is also on board to direct this time around after making his directorial debut with 2019's Annabelle Comes Home. We’re back with a brand new assortment of horror and sci-fi home media releases this week, and as we creep closer and closer towards Halloween, there are definitely a handful of titles coming out on Tuesday that would be fun to check out as you get ready for the spooky season. Arrow Video is keeping busy with a handful of releases, including a 4K version of Dario Argento’s The Cat O’ Nine Tails and Blind Beast. Larry Cohen’s A Return to Salem’s Lot is finally getting a Blu-ray, and if you missed the latest Conjuring film in theaters earlier this year, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is headed home on multiple formats this week as well.

Last year it was revealed that after teaming up to bring nightmares to life in The Conjuring cinematic universe, James Wan and Gary Dauberman are looking to bring one of Stephen King's classic stories to the big screen with a film adaptation of ’Salem's Lot, with Wan producing and Dauberman executive producing and writing the screenplay. Nearly one year later, it's now been reported that Dauberman will also direct the latest adaptation of King's beloved 1975 book.
The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who report that Dauberman "has closed a deal to direct the feature thriller" for New Line Cinema. This will mark Dauberman's second movie as director, as he made his directorial debut with last year's Annabelle Comes Home.
According to THR, Roy Lee and Mark Wolper will produce the new 'Salem's Lot adaptation alongside Wan. A release date has yet to be announced.
