Broadway’s 2024-25 season has gotten off to a rather extraordinarily fine start, from the wildly popular and hysterically funny Oh, Mary! to the fabulous splash of Death Becomes Her and the wonderful left-field sleeper Maybe Happy Ending. There have been a few clunkers — looking at you, Tammy Faye — but if the spring season holds the ratio, theatergoers have much to look forward to.
This compendium of Deadline’s Broadway reviews for the season might offer some guidance through what will be a very show-packed spring. No fewer than 18 shows are scheduled to open in March and April and of the Tony Awards nominations and show, and we’ll be reviewing them all.
Here’s the upcoming lineup: The Picture of Dorian Gray (March 27), Glengarry Glen Ross (March 31), Good Night, and Good Luck (April 3), Boop! The Betty Boop Musical (April 5), The Last Five Years (April 6), Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends (April...

Christopher Gattelli had choreographed 17 previous Broadway shows, winning a Tony Award for Newsies. But this season's Death Becomes Her marks his first time directing, in addition to crafting the dance sequences. “There have been other things that have been bubbling, but I'm just so proud that this is my first,” he exclaims. Gattelli recently sat down with Gold Derby to reflect on bringing the classic comedy to life on the rialto.
Gattelli is quick to praise his “incredible” production team, but he felt surprisingly comfortable during his first stint in the director’s chair. “The path is more clear because I have an overall vision,” he explains. “That's why I think this is the right show for that kind of collaboration with myself. It was more natural for me to come to the stair-fall using a dancer rather than another option. Having the choreographic background and saying like, ‘Oh, we're...

Michelle Williams is currently starring on Broadway in Death Becomes Her and someone sent her fan mail to the theatre, but thought she was the other Michelle Williams!
The Destiny’s Child singer shared a video of herself reading a letter she received from a fan in Germany, who thought she was the Oscar-nominated actress.
“I received this letter, and I can’t wait to dig in and tell you guys what it says. Alright, it says, ‘Dear Michelle Williams, I hope this letter finds you in great spirits. My name is Philip, and I have been an avid fan of your incredible performances in both film and theater,’” Michelle began.
While Michelle is best known for singing, she has made several Broadway appearances and has appeared in some movies too. But as the letter continued, it was clear the person intended it for the other Michelle.

Meryl Streep. That’s it. That’s the intro. Because honestly, what more do you need? She’s the actress, Hollywood’s gold standard, the queen of accents, and the only person who could probably win an Oscar for playing a rock. She doesn’t just act; she disappears into roles, making you forget you’re watching Meryl Streep at all.
One moment, she’s a ruthless fashion editor (The Devil Wears Prada); the next, she’s belting Abba tunes (Mamma Mia!). And before you know it, she’s breaking your heart (Sophie’s Choice). She’s been stealing scenes since the late ’70s and hasn’t stopped since.

A spaghetti western is defined as a low-budget Western film created by European directors, and for the most part, they were primarily produced in Italy during the 1960s. In addition to a long list of different filming techniques, spaghetti Westerns were unique in the fact that they often focused on the negative aspects of Westerns, such as the corruption and violence at the center of many of it its stories.
As many Western fans are likely aware, Clint Eastwood famously starred in three spaghetti westerns: A Fistful of Dollars in 1964, The Good, the Bad and The Ugly in 1966, and For a Few Dollars More in 1965. Though he is considered a figurehead within the genre of Spaghetti Westerns, there are a wide variety of Spaghetti Westerns that are just as fantastical but do not star Eastwood.

For a movie with a lot of blood and guts, The Monkey is full of life. Through filmmaker Oz Perkins and cinematographer Nico Aguilar’s eyes, the world is bright. Greens are lush. Houses are full of color, time, and history. Even the titular monkey is a bright light to the eyes. Death looms large over the James Wan-produced Stephen King adaptation, but so do vibrant color and joy.
It is a comedy, first and foremost, so cinematographer Aguilar’s colorful, wacky choices are spot on for Perkins’ madcap vision. The cinematographer previously shot Rodrigo Prieto’s Pedro Páramo and Elle Callahan’s Witch Hunt. Aguilar took the time to speak with Daily Dead about crafting The Monkey, including the bloody motel sequence and how to best frame the deadly toy.
You’ve said before that you don’t want genre to influence your choices, but rather the story.

Actors’ Equity Association has reached a deal with the Broadway League on a new five-year Development Agreement, resolving an eight-month strike prohibiting Equity members’ participation in early stages of development work.
The National Council of Actors’ Equity Association, the labor union representing more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theatre, announced today that it had voted to ratify a new five-year Development Agreement, concluding an eight-month strike against The Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater producers and owners.
The new agreement is effective immediately and extends to February 11, 2029.
The Development Agreement is used for the development of new works by Broadway League producers, usually prior to an intended Production Contract engagement. The new agreement guarantees a cumulative pay increase of over 8% for Equity members, achieving the union’s top goal for this collective bargaining agreement. Broadway seemed to be shedding a bit of winter weight last week as the industry gears up for a busy March and busier April. With two fewer shows on the roster during the week ending February 23 – gone were heavy hitters Romeo + Juliet and All In: Comedy About Love – total grosses of $27,930,129 were off 13.23% from the previous week.
Total attendance for the 26 productions was 231,705, off about 5% from the previous week. The discrepancy between the grosses and attendance percentage drops reflects a lower average ticket price last week – $120.54 – than the $132.29 of the previous week which included the tourist-friendly Presidents Day Weekend.
Two recent arrivals are off to promising starts. Buena Vista Social Club began previews at the Schoenfeld, selling out all three performances for a $447,171 take. The musical opens on March 19.

Theo James flirted with the horror genre many times in his career, doing action horror in the Underworld franchise and apocalypse horror in 2018's How It Ends. 2025 provided the actor with a different horror subgenre — dark comedy horror with The Monkey.
The film comes from Longlegs' critically acclaimed director Osgood "Oz" Perkins and is based on Stephen King's 1980 short story of the same name. At the same time, the director has taken a lot of liberties with King's short story, adding a dark comedy twist to it. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, James further explained what was the inspiration for the film, aside from King's works.

On a particularly gloomy afternoon in Los Angeles, Demi Moore walks into the room, her presence instantly brightening the space. Dressed in a chic yet relaxed ensemble, she carries her designer handbag, —but her adorable, tiny, wide-eyed puppy is not with her.
Moore is no stranger to reinvention. From the breakout success of “Ghost” (1990) to the cultural phenomenon of “Indecent Proposal” (1993), and now to her critically acclaimed turn in “The Substance,” she has had a career that defies Hollywood’s conventional wisdom. But this time, something feels different.
“This whole journey has just been a shock and awe,” she says with humility and amusement. “I had no expectations, so everything has been a surprise, and honestly, that’s a really beautiful place to be sitting in.”
At 62, Moore has just earned her first Academy Award nomination for best actress, a recognition that was both unexpected and long overdue. Her performance...

Isabella Rossellini has been a prominent actress, model, writer, and director for nearly 50 years. Recently, Rossellini earned her first Academy Award nomination for her supporting performance in the religious political thrillerConclave. The awards season buzz surrounding Rossellini has led to a renewed interest in her career. Rossellini was born from cinema royalty, the child of Italian neorealism pioneer Roberto Rossellini and iconic Swedish/Hollywood Golden Era star Ingrid Bergman.
In 1976, Rossellini appeared in her first motion picture with a supporting role opposite her mother in Vincente Minnelli's musical fantasy A Matter of Time. A few years later, Rossellini began modeling, appearing in high-profile magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Vanity Fair. Rossellini eventually became the exclusive spokesmodel for the French perfume and cosmetics house Lancôme. Her big acting break came via David Lynch's highly controversial neo-noir Blue Velvet, which helped turn Rossellini into a major movie star.

Michelle Williams is handling her stay in the snow-scattered, negative-windchill New York City the same way many choose to endure winter: “I don’t do anything.”
But unlike most of the hibernating human population, Williams’ calendar hold for inactivity makes space for the former Destiny’s Child member to show up eight times a week for the Broadway musical production of Death Becomes Her as she embodies chaos agent Viola van Horn — a sultry temptress who wields the power of an elixir of everlasting life and taut skin. In 1989, both Steven Soderbergh and “Presence” screenwriter David Koepp had movies at the Sundance Film Festival. While the two didn’t meet that year — Koepp was not in attendance for his “Bad Influence,” the lowkey thriller by future “L.A. Confidential” filmmaker Curtis Hanson, as Soderbergh took his “Sex, Lies and Videotape” into the history books of American independent cinema — their professional lives would continue to cross.
Koepp at one point tried to get Soderbergh to direct “Death Becomes Her,” a project Soderbergh said would be “too hard.” Then, after Koepp had subsequently become one of the most prolific and profitable screenwriters in Hollywood history with “Jurassic Park,” “Mission: Impossible” and more, the pair met for a drink.
Koepp presented an idea he had about an agoraphobic young woman whose job is to listen to recordings and one day – surprise! – she hears a murder. Soderbergh encouraged Koepp to write it, and every six months or so,...

Meryl Streep, we miss you at the Academy Awards.
It’s been seven years since Streep was last nominated for an Oscar for her work in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” in 2018.
Seven years without Streep is a long time.
Back then, she broke her own record as the most-nominated actress in Oscar history. Her best actress nod for playing Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham landed Streep her 21st Oscar nomination. Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson are tied in second place with a dozen each.
Streep has won Oscars for “Kramer vs. Kramer” in 1979 (supporting actress), “Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 (best actress) and “The Iron Lady” in 2011 (best actress).
The last time she went missing from the Oscars for a long period of time was in the 1990s when she had a gap between her nominations for “Postcards From the Edge” in 1991 to her best actress nod in 1996 for “Bridges of Madison County.

Playing a traumatized nightclub singer made her a star, but to finally win over the Academy, Isabella Rossellini had to play a nosy nun.
Rossellini received her first-ever Oscar nomination on Thursday, scoring a nomination in the best supporting actress category for her role as Sister Agnes in Edward Berger’s Vatican-set thriller Conclave. Her competition includes Ariana Grande for Wicked, Monica Barbaro for A Complete Unknown, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez.
Both of Rossellini’s parents were Oscar nominees — her mother Ingrid Bergman was nominated an astounding 7 times, winning best actress 3 times, while father Roberto Rossellini received a screenwriting nom in 1950 — but it took this nepo-baby nearly 40 years to translate her overnight success into Academy acclaim.

After a four-decade career in films, Isabella Rossellini scored her first Oscar nomination on Thursday for her supporting role as a Vatican nun in “Conclave.”
The nomination places Rossellini in the Academy history books. She is the daughter of three-time Oscar-winning actress Ingrid Bergman. Her father, the Italian neorealist filmmaking legend Roberto Rossellini was also nominated once, in 1950 for his screenplay for “Paisan.”
Swedish acting legend Bergman is often cited as one of the greatest screen icons of all time, famed for her roles in “Casablanca,” “The Bells of St. Marys” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious.” She was a seven-time nominee who won three Oscars: two for Best Actress (“Gaslight” and “Anastasia”) and one for Best Supporting Actress (“Murder on the Orient Express”).

Broadway said a few so-longs last week, with the star-studded Our Town ending its limited run and some original cast members of Oh, Mary! and The Great Gatsby giving way to replacements. Ticket-buyers were there to see everyone off.
Our Town, the Thornton Wilder classic starring Jim Parsons, Katie Holmes, Ephraim Sykes and Zoey Deutch, among others, had its best week since opening last fall: The revival at the Ethel Barrymore grossed $1,084,024 for its final week, up $128,404 from the previous week. Just more than 95% of seats were occupied.
Oh, Mary! star (and creator) Cole Escola played their final week in the title role of Mary Todd Lincoln (American Primeval‘s Betty Gilpin takes over tonight for an eight-week run). The comedy has been selling out for months, and Escola’s final performances were no exception. Oh, Mary! grossed $1,253,871 for the week ending January 19.

Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. With only four months to go until the 2025 nominations are announced, we’ve reconvened for a retrospective on the musicals from the first half of the Broadway season, during which a total of nine new works and revivals have bowed out of the anticipated 21 total that will be eligible.
David Buchanan: Hey, Sam! It’s hard to believe, but we’re less than four months away from the 2025 Tony Awards nominations. While the Broadway season has been flying by, we’ve already seen five new musicals and four musical revivals open, including some truly first-rate productions. How do you think the competition for the top category of Best Musical has been shaking out so far?

Woman of Substance: Fargeat Rejuvenates Body Horror with Pulpy Parable
To borrow a succinct phrase from Beyonce, ‘pretty hurts,’ a sentiment quivering through Coraline Fargeat’s morbidly entertaining sophomore feature, The Substance. Its simplistic title eventually reveals itself to be a vicious bit of irony, considering it refers to a magical titular potion which seems fashioned for those who are actually lacking substance, their worth defined solely by the superficiality of youth and beauty. Los Angeles turns out to be ground zero for this unique riff on Death Becomes Her (1992), plus a formidable array of other cult titles in what is essentially a ‘be careful what you wish for’ moral fable.…...

Broadway took a somewhat humbling post-holiday slip at the box office last week, with the roster of shows down by three productions and overall receipts off by about 29% from the previous week when the New Year holidays helped boost attendance.
In all, the 30 shows grossed $32,176,529 for the week ending January 12, with attendance of 254,320 down about 13% from the previous week. About 92% of seats on Broadway were occupied, with an average ticket price of $126.52.
Twenty-two of the 30 productions reported decreases in grosses last week.
Going out on a very high note was Stereophonic, which ended its Broadway run on January 12 – a West End engagement and national U.S. tour are planned – with a weekly gross of $1,017,784 and attendance at 100% of capacity at the Golden. The David Adjmi play had recouped its Broadway investment (the play was capitalized at up to $4.8 million.)

After the collapse of the studio system, when actors were finally given more autonomy regarding their careers and were much more free to choose the types of roles and films they'd appear in, the true test of an actor became what happened when and if they reached megastardom. Some stars love the limelight so much that they try and give their public what it is they think they want to see over and over again, and can find themselves feeling burned out or too typecast in the process. Others become much more reclusive, either outright refusing easy paycheck jobs or being extremely picky about their projects. Then there are those stars who manage to straddle the line between the commercial and artistic sides of their vocation, and are able to spin their newfound clout into a mixture of roles that demonstrate not only their range, but also their creative curiosity.

Isabella Rossellini and Mikey Madison have two of the most complicated roles of the year in “Conclave” and “Anora,” respectively. In Edward Berger’s Vatican-set thriller “Conclave,” Rossellini had to perform largely without speaking, as her nun character is silent through much of the film. And in “Anora,” Madison had to infuse her title character with an outward bite that fell apart in the movie’s final scene, an emotional breakdown that the actress worked hard to nail.
But immediately upon sitting down for TheWrap’s longform video series Visionaries, Rossellini and Madison made clear they were big fans of each other’s work – Madison even revealed that her mother showed her “Death Becomes Her” when she decided she wanted to be an actress.

Gypsy got back on track and Wicked stayed in the stratosphere during New Year’s week, with most of Broadway’s 33 shows posting strong numbers even while dropping down from the previous (and very lucrative) Christmas week figures.
With Audra McDonald back in action after a week of illness that prompted the cancellation of all but one Gypsy performance, the musical revival played a full eight performances, grossing $1,799,134. That’s up $1,519,039 over the previous week’s single performance.
Wicked, meanwhile, was the Broadway chart’s top earner for the New Year’s holiday week ending January 5. The show’s gross of $3,294,179 bested the #2 earner, The Lion King by nearly a half-million dollars. Wicked, posting huge numbers in recent months, had grossed $5,037,392 the previous week for nine performances, a record high for Broadway.
In its final week, Elf grossed $1,214,945, with 82% of seats filled at the Marquis,...

At a spry 72 years young, Isabella Rossellini is having a moment. And an impressive one considering her remarkable life so far. The daughter of famed Italian director Roberto Rossellini and legendary actress Ingrid Bergman, the Italian-born artist was at one time a news reporter, a model for some of the greatest fashion photographers of the 20th Century, and an actress starring in unforgettable films such as David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart,” Robert Zemeckis’ “Death Becomes Her,” the 90s classic “Big Night,” and Peter Weir’s “Fearless.” Now, she may be on the verge of her first Oscar nomination for her role as Sister Agnes in Edward Berger’s “Conclave.”

Sabrina Carpenter is one of the most popular music artists working today, and her 2024 was nothing short of extraordinary, resulting in a huge net worth. Carpenter released her album Short n' Sweet in August, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 list. Three of the album's singles — "Espresso," Please Please Please," and "Taste" — spent weeks on the Hot 100 charts. Carpenter also embarked on her first arena tour, released an incredible music video "Taste" that paid homage to cult classic Death Becomes Her, received six Grammy nominations, and debuted her Netflix special, A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter.
While many may think she got famous overnight, Carpenter's success is the result of years of hard work. Carpenter began her career in 2011 with a guest appearance on Law and Order: Svu. Her big break came in 2013 when she was cast on the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World, a spin-off of the beloved 90s show Boy Meets World.

The build-up to Christmas is being very generous with Broadway. In some cases, very, very generous. Among the most impressive box office developments last week was the welcome given to All In: Comedy About Love, based on the short stories of writer Simon Rich, read live by such performers as, initially, John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Richard Kind (the cast changes each week).
For the week ending December 15, All In grossed $1,046,514 for five previews. The Hudson Theatre was sold out for the week with a hefty average ticket price of $216.22.
Also doing its best to impress the holiday gods was Elf, joining the rarified $2 million club with a gross of $2,033,784, with 94% of seats at the massive Marquis occupied.
Other shows grossing $2M or more were the usuals: Hamilton, The Lion King, and tireless frontrunner Wicked. Two productions teetered on the $2M brink: Gypsy; and Sunset Blvd..
Solidly on the $1M+ turf were: & Juliet, Aladdin, All In: Comedy About Love, Back To The Future, Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club, Death Becomes Her, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Hell’s Kitchen, Mj, Moulin Rouge!, Oh, Mary!, Suffs, The Book of Mormon, The Great Gatsby, The Notebook and The Outsiders.
Sell-outs for the week were All In: Comedy About Love, Death Becomes Her, Hadestown, Hamilton, Oh, Mary!, Romeo + Juliet, Suffs, The Notebook, The Outsiders and Wicked. Topping 95% were & Juliet, Aladdin, Chicago, Gypsy, Hell’s Kitchen, Moulin Rouge!, Stereophonic, Sunset Blvd., The Book of Mormon, The Great Gatsby and The Lion King.
A couple numbers of note: Swept Away, which recently gave itself a wise two-week extension (to December 29) after posting an early closing, filled 99% of seats at the Longacre. And the excellent Maybe Happy Ending, after initially struggling to find its audience, was at 95% of capacity at the Belasco last week, with a very happy gross of $764,022.
Cult of Love, which opened to generally solid reviews on December 12, filled 91% of seats at the Hayes, grossing $315,283 for two previews and five regular performances.
Another recent arrival, the so-dubbed vaccine comedy Eureka Day, was in previews last week at the Friedman, filling 85% of seats and grossing $230,425. The positive reviews that followed its December 16 opening should spur some box office gains in coming weeks.
Two shows closed last week: The Notebook, filling the Schoenfeld with last-chancers and grossing a hefty $1,094,299, and The Roommate, grossing $501,497 with attendance at 87% of capacity (up from 77% the previous week).
Not sharing in the holiday love were Left on Tenth and The Hills of California, with attendance leaving their respective venues nearly half empty.
In all, the 36 Broadway productions on the boards last week grossed $43,720,381, with attendance at 314,951, both figures more than 38% greater than last year at this time. Average ticket price was $138.82, about $3 greater than last year.
Season to date, Broadway, in the 30th week of the 2024-25 season, has grossed $992,182,392, up about 15% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 7,971,644 also up about 15%.
