Miramax Films’ musical fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted will officially be heading to a brand-new streaming home soon. The 2004 movie was led by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway in one of her earliest movie roles, following the success of 2001’s The Princess Diaries.

Beginning on March 6, Ella Enchanted will be available for streaming on Prime Video. In the film, Hathaway portrayed the titular role of Ella, a young woman whose fairy godmother granted her the magical gift of obedience. This ability requires her to immediately obey any command she has been given. However, as she grows up, this so-called gift proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, since it gives anyone the power to take advantage of her. During its theatrical run, it received negative reviews from critics and fans of the novel, with a Tomatometer rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was due to its lack of faithfulness from the original source material.

In the annals of British TV, there have been a lot of great shows that have found success here in America. However, while fans have been eagerly anticipating a return to their favorite mining spacecraft, it appears as if plans have unfortunately fallen through, and a reported Season 13 might not happen after all.

Why in the name of all that’s funny do American producers try to adapt British sitcoms for U.S. audiences? The easy answer: Sometimes, it works. Norman Lear’s All in the Family and Sanford and Son were huge hits based on U.K. comedies, while the American version of The Office is arguably the most successful (or at least the most imitated) sitcom of the century.

But alongside those successes are a series of miserable failures that got lost in translation. Here are five examples of failed American versions of classic British sitcoms…

1 Fawlty Towers

In 2000, the British Film Institute ranked Fawlty Towers first on its list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes, and Channel 4 had Basil Fawlty number two on its list of the 100 Greatest Television Characters. With its simple premise — an uptight dolt runs a dysfunctional hotel — Fawlty Towers was an obvious choice for an American update.

Fubo and comedian Ryan Reynolds have given up on the Maximum Effort Channel less than two years after the free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) network launched, The Desk has learned.

The channel is no longer available on a handful of third party platforms, including Plex, LG Channels, Xumo Play and Amazon’s Freevee, after technology provider Wurl pulled the plug on the network earlier this week. A website that promoted the channel and its availability went offline on Tuesday. On Dish Network’s Fast platform, Sling Freevee, the Maximum Effort Channel continues to be listed, but its programming feed has been replaced with a “technical difficulties” graphic.

Neither Fubo nor Maximum Effort, the Reynolds-backed company that programmed the channel, have released public statements on the closure of the channel.

Tony Slattery, star of Channel 4‘s Whose Line Is It Anyway? and contemporary of Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, has died. He was 65.

In a statement given to the BBC on behalf of Slattery’s partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson said: “It is with great sadness we must announce actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, has passed away today, Tuesday morning, following a heart attack on Sunday evening.”

The British actor and comedian was famed for his quick wit and improv on the popular comedy show, but also featured in films like Peter’s Friends (1992), alongside his Cambridge University peers Thompson, Laurie and Fry, and The Crying Game (1989).

Slattery received an Olivier Award nomination for best comedy performance for his role as Gordon in Tim Firth’s Neville’s Island.

Exclusive: BAFTA and Sundance-nominated Tina Gharavi has optioned Icelandic bestseller ‘Refurinn’ and is adapting it as crime thriller that will be a UK-Iceland co-production. Gharavi helmed Jada Pinkett Smith’s four-part Netflix docudrama African Queens: Cleopatra and is currently directing Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day. She will be showrunner on the series, has penned a pilot, and plans to produce and direct.

The Fox is based on Sólveig Pálsdóttir’s Refurinn, one of her Ice & Crime series thrillers, which feature detective Guðgeir Fransson.

Nordic noir fan Gharavi bought the rights directly from the Pálsdóttir and spent time researching the book’s characters with the author. “Wednesday” Season 2 will indeed be released on Netflix in 2025, the streamer confirmed on Wednesday (naturally) while unveiling the first official image of Jenna Ortega in the new season as fans patiently await the new episodes. The new look at Ortega’s fan-favorite character comes as production on “Wednesday” Season 2 has finally wrapped in the U.K., with the show now firmly moving into post-production.

The highly anticipated return comes after the first season of the “Addams Family” spinoff series became the second most-watched English-language show in Netflix history three weeks after its debut.

The singer and actress has officially joined the cast of “Wednesday” Season 2, TheWrap has learned. No details have been disclosed about Gaga’s character so far.

Fresh off of starring in “Joker 2,” Gaga will join returning “Wednesday” stars Jenna Ortega, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Hunter Doohan, Victor Dorobantu, Moosa Mostafa and Georgie Farmer, as well as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez and Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, who have been upped to series regulars.

After “Wednesday” Season 1 debuted in November 2022, Gaga’s 2011 hit “Bloody Mary” went viral when sliced with Ortega’s dancing in “Wednesday,” and since then, Ortega said in a red carpet interview that she would love for Gaga to appear in Season 2.

Ferguson has joined the cast in the role of Dame Snap, the story’s terrifying headmistress.

The film is currently shooting in England at Shinfield Studios. Adapted by BAFTA Award-winner Simon Farnaby, the movie is directed by Ben Gregor.

The film is produced by Academy Award-nominee Pippa Harris and Nicolas Brown of Neal Street Productions, along with Danny Perkins (Greatest Days) of Elysian Film Group, and Jane Hooks. Executive Producers include Ashland Hill Media Finance’s Simon Williams, Joe Simpson, Jonathan Bross, and Palisades Park Pictures’ Tamara Birkemoe.

It has not been announced via Deadline that Hiran Abeysekera (The Life of Pi), Pippa Bennett-Warner (Gangs of London), and British comedy legend Jennifer Saunders, known best for her work alongside Joanna Lumley in Absolutely Fabulous, are all joining the ensemble.

Saunders takes on the role of the kids’ ruthless Grandma. Additional supporting roles include Laurence Olivier Award-winner, Hiran Abeysekera as the Angry Pixie, one of the magical denizens of the woodland, and Pippa Bennett-Warner as Grandma’s assistant, Hannah.

Newcomers Delilah Bennett-Cardy, Billie Gadsdon and Phoenix Laroche will play the Thompson children.

Hiran Abeysekera (The Life of Pi, The Father and the Assassin) and Pippa Bennett-Warner (Gangs of London, See How They Run, Chloe) will also feature alongside the previously announced cast of Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Nicola Coughlan and Jessica Gunning.

Exclusive: Comedian and writer Julian Clary (Julian Clary: Live – Lord of the Mince) will play the title role in this festive season’s London Palladium pantomime Robin Hood, with singer and travel show presenter Jane McDonald (Cruising with Jane McDonald) topping the bill as Maid Marion.

The annual Palladium show, now in its ninth consecutive season, has become an eagerly awaited staple in the West End’s calendar. It runs from December 7 through January 12, 2025. Priority booking opens 10 Am (GMT) April 25.

The BAFTA-nominated “Friday Night Dinner” — which served up 37 episodes from 2011-2020 —stemmed from creator Robert Popper’s real-life secular Jewish family and their weekly Shabbat meals, explaining why everything from its suburban London home to its lovable oddballs feels so wonderfully specific. Disappointingly, Amazon Freevee’s “Dinner with the Parents” is as generic as its title.

The 10-part series on Freevee does attempt to retain some of the original’s quirks.
