Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell, its spinoffs and 2020 reboot, Last Comic Standing and many other series, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 88. His family confirmed the news to Deadline but did not provide a cause of death.
Engel exec-produced more than 1,000 hours of TV during a 40-year career, mostly for NBC as part of a long-term partnership. His credits also include scores of episodes of City Guys and Malibu CA — both of which he also created — along with Hang Time, USA High, California Dreams, How to Survive a Marriage and others.
He also wrote more than 100 episodes of City Guys, nearly as many of USA High and 50-plus for Malibu CA.

The longest-running Saved by the Bell TV show might actually be the least known. It’s not streaming in full, it’s hard to find on physical media, and it might not even be considered SBTBcanon. But Saved by the Bell: The New Class kept the Bayside story going on Saturday- morning NBC long after Zack, AC, Jessie, and the rest of the original Saved by the Bell gang graduated. Here’s the lowdown on the little-remembered spinoff. 1. It was the longest-running show in the Saved by the Bell franchise. Whereas the original Saved by the Bell ran for four seasons and 86 episodes, its 2020 revival ran for two seasons, and the spinoff Saved by the Bell: The College Years ran for just one, Saved by the Bell: The New Class lasted seven seasons and 143 episodes, taking the franchise into a new millennium. 2. Mr. Belding was a regular character all seven seasons,...

The Saved by the Bell reboot received criticism for its character development, friendships, and tone-deaf jokes. Specific issues included Zack's misogynistic behavior, A.C. Slater's lack of growth, and Kelly's reduced role as Zack's "hot wife." The show's attempt to be relevant with jokes about sensitive topics, such as Selena Gomez's kidney transplant, was not well-received
Saved by the Bell was hugely popular during its original run, but there were several things about the 2020 reboot that made no sense. Saved by the Bell ended in 1993, but the franchise was revived for a TV spinoff and two movies: Hawaiian Style, The College Years, and Wedding in Las Vegas, respectively. While there were plenty of harsh realities of Saved by the Bell, it was generally praised for how it tackled life lessons in the backdrop of Bayside High School.
The 2020 revival, however, lacked a lot of the charm the original was known for.

Burnett recognized Probst's talent early on and fought to have him as host, leading to Survivor's success. Probst met his wife at one of Burnett's eccentric parties filled with A-list celebrities like Streisand and Hilton. Probst and Burnett had differing views on casting villains, with Probst now focusing on positive elements in the show.
Survivor creator, Mark Burnett has always credited the show's success to its longtime host and showrunner, Jeff Probst. But did you know that Burnett had to fight to cast the TV presenter? "I always try to hire people better than me," the British producer said of his collaborator. Burnett convinced CBS which had a silent lawsuit of fixing Survivor eliminations that Probst was "the right move for the health of the show." True enough, they've made the show more interesting since.

Spin-offs can struggle to live up to the success of the original show, as seen with "Joey" and "Joanie Loves Chachi," which failed to capture the chemistry and appeal of their predecessors. Changing the formula and dynamics of a successful show in a spin-off can lead to its downfall, as demonstrated by "Law & Order: Trial By Jury" and "The Cleveland Show," which were canceled after just one season. Sometimes, a spin-off loses the magic and charm of the original, resulting in poor viewing numbers and cancellation, as seen with "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" and "How I Met Your Father."
When it comes to spin-offs, there can definitely be too much of a good thing. Studios and TV networks need to make a return on their investment, and often, when a show succeeds, one way they can cash in is by making a spin-off series. However, not...

Mark-Paul Gosselaar successfully broke free from his Saved by the Bell persona and transitioned to diverse adult acting roles. Gosselaar's willingness to embrace his past as Zack Morris shows his confidence and acceptance of his early career. Gosselaar's versatility and transformation as an actor are evident in his recent role as a kidnapper in the NBC crime drama series Found.
If there ever was a role that could have forever typecast a young actor, it was the role of Zack Morris, the blond, blue-eyed, charming social butterfly who was immortalized by Mark-Paul Gosselaar in the NBC Saturday morning sitcom Saved by the Bell between 1989 and 1993. Indeed, the specter of typecasting practically enveloped Saved by the Bell co-star Dustin Diamond, who spent the rest of his all-too-brief life living in the shadow of practical joker character Screech.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played Zack Morris in Saved by the Bell, expressed discomfort with some of his character's actions. Gosselaar acknowledged the problematic portrayal of Zack Morris wearing a headdress in an episode, and charging classmates to kiss Lisa without her consent. The actor stated that if faced with similar situations now, he would have a dialogue with the writers and producers to ensure that the character's behavior reflects well and aligns with the values of the show and audience.

Sex Education season 4 might be its last, and there is already one spinoff idea that won’t work for the Netflix series. Season 3 ended with Moordale closing its doors for good, leaving Otis, Maeve, Eric, and other classmates attending Cavendish Sixth Form College to close out their final year before university.
When Sex Education returns for season 4, many of the series’ most memorable characters won’t be present, including Ola, Lily, and Emily Sands. The rest of the students will have to adjust to a new school, with a plethora of new classmates to befriend and an atmosphere they will have to get used to — one that may or may not be like what they experienced at Moordale. While there are currently no confirmed spinoff plans, there are plenty of past examples Sex Education can look to series of the past regarding what not to do should the series continue...

We never can say goodbye, and that is especially true when it comes to beloved TV shows. The post-finale spinoff has always been a popular way to keep a franchise going.
In recent decades, some of these spinoffs have been just as good as the original: I would lead with “Frasier,” out of “Cheers,” of course, which put Kelsey Grammer’s character front and center, making him just as iconic as Ted Danson’s Sam Malone. And “Better Call Saul,” an idea that began as a bit of a lark when “Breaking Bad” was ending. Of course, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould wound up creating something richer — a show led by Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn that went to dramatically dense places no one could have predicted. It’s an immediate spin-off all-timer. “The Good Fight” continued the legacy of “The Good Wife,” but shifted the focus to Christine Baranski.

With a hypnotic gaze, a raspy voice and the capability to effortlessly inhabit the soul of a character, the late actor, musician and activist River Phoenix was a once-in-a-generation talent. Today, he would have turned 51 years old.
While his posthumous age can be an irrelevant number to warrant a retrospective of one of the finest ever to grace the movies — especially one year after many took the opportunity to celebrate him for his 50th birthday — any day can be an opportunity to reflect upon someone with only 14 film credits who made an undeniable impact on the cinematic art form.

The soundtrack to one of comedy’s classic shows is out Friday. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, yadda, yadda, yadda.
The Seinfeld Soundtrack spotlights music from the show’s nine seasons and 180 episodes. The score was carefully curated by the show’s composer, Jonathan Wolff, who selected songs specifically with fans in mind. Wolff’s resume includes composing music for Will & Grace, Married with Children, Reba, Who’s the Boss, and Saved by the Bell: The College Years.
For the Seinfeld collection, such popular scenes as “Cable Guy vs. Kramer,” “Jerry Vs. Newman Chase” and “Rochelle, Rochelle the Musical” are revived, as are three different versions of the show’s theme song.
Wolff answered a few Deadline questions about the music and how it played into the making of the hit comedy.

Weeks after he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, Saved by the Bell star Dustin Diamond has passed away. According to a rep for the actor, Diamond died on Monday morning after his condition had greatly declined over the past week. With his girlfriend by his side, Diamond reportedly died after he was taken off of breathing machines in an attempt to get him to hospice care. He was 44 years old.
Last month, it was reported that Diamond has been hospitalized with an illness suspected to be cancer. Doctors confirmed those fears with a diagnosis of stage 4 small cell carcinoma, otherwise referred to as advanced lung cancer. He had since started chemotherapy treatments with plans to battle the disease. Days ago, Diamond theorized that staying in cheap motels as a traveling comedian may have contributed to his illness, but it was also in his family as his mother died of breast cancer.

Saved By The Bell was considered a staple of 1990s teen and pre-teen shows, and an entire generation grew up with the wisecracking, fun-loving "friends forever" gang at Bayside High. Alas, nothing lasts forever, and soon the gang had graduated and prepared for college life. Not ready to call it quits, sitcom powerhouse NBC commissioned the follow-up series Saved By The Bell: The College Years to pick up where Bayside left off.

His cheeky smirk and blonde locks defined a generation in the '90s, making Zack Morris one of the most popular characters in Saturday Morning programming and the King of Bayside High. During the five-season run of Saved By The Bell (and later two seasons of Saved By The Bell: The College Years), he schemed and plotted to have as much fun as possible while doing as little homework as possible, yet somehow graduated at the top of his class.

Fans of Zack, Kelly, Jessie, Slater, and the rest of the gang were excited to return to Bayside High for a brand new edition of Saved by the Bell, a reboot that combines all the whimsy of the original show's shenanigans with updated issues, perspectives, and technology. Exclusive: Time out! Bayside High is about to take over Peacock. The streaming service is set to launch a new Saved by the Bell channel on November 16 ahead of the reimagining of the classic Saturday morning show, which will debut on November 25.
The channel will available on Peacock for free and include over 100 episodes from the original Saved by the Bell series, Saved by the Bell: The College Years, Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style, and Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Vegas. It will be non-stop Bayside fun with Zack, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa and Screech to keep you satisfied until the revival makes it big premiere.
In the new series, Mark-Paul Gosselaar reprises his role as Zack Morris. His charmingly scheming ways have paved the road for him to become the governor of California. True to Zack Morris form, he is in hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools.

Teen high-school drama Saved by the Bell was on the air between 1989 and 1993, starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Dustin Diamond, Lark Voorhies, Mario Lopez, and Elizabeth Berkley. Peacock has rounded out the lead cast for its upcoming Saved by the Bell reboot, adding Haskiri Velazquez (The Birch), Mitchell Hoog (Harriet), Alycia Pascual-Pena (Chase) and Belmont Cameli (Empire).
They join previously announced original-series cast members Elizabeth Berkley, Mario Lopez and Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who are returning for the reboot, along with new leads Josie Totah and Dexter Darden.
In the new Saved by the Bell, California Governor Zack Morris (Gosselaar) gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools and proposes they send the affected students to the highest-performing schools in the state, including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the overprivileged Bayside kids a much-needed dose of reality.
Velazquez plays Daisy, a smart, ambitious sophomore who is excited at the prospect of attending Bayside High after her local school gets shut down. Hoog plays Mac Morris, the handsome, charming, privileged son of Governor Zack Morris.

Before I started watching Fox's Pitch, I wasn't the biggest fan of beards. They're scratchy. They look like they're full of crumbs. Do they smell? Then, I watched the first episode of the sports drama. In addition to giving me a strong and complex female character (Ginny Baker, the first woman to play Major League Baseball), a crazy twist, and a reason to finally get into baseball, it has also gifted me with an unexpected surprise: Mark-Paul Gosselaar's glorious beard. It's an established fact that Gosselaar is aging like a fine wine, and the facial hair he sports while playing good-natured catcher Mike Lawson has only helped his cause. In all honesty, Gosselaar hasn't looked this hot since Saved by the Bell: The College Years (sorry, Franklin and Bash fans). While I busy myself looking for lumberjack appreciation groups on Facebook, please enjoy the best photos of Gosselaar and his beard,...

If you’re a child of the 1980’s, you’ll likely remember Ami Dolenz for her roles on films like Can’t Buy Me Love, She’s Out of Control, and Miracle Beach and guest spots on Silver Spoons, Webster, and Saved by the Bell: The College Years. She even played Sloan in the short-lived TV adaptation of Ferris Bueller. The actress, however, is no stranger to the horror genre as she’s had parts in films from Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings to the greatest (and quite possibly only) movie ever made about giant killer ticks, Ticks. Tony Randel’s 1993 flick is an absolute blast and an obvious time capsule of early 90’s movie clichés, in the very best way possible.
With Olive Films’ new Blu-ray of Ticks recently hitting stores, FEARnet sat down with Dolenz to discuss her memories of the film, Seth Green’s hair, and creepy crawlies.

In an interview with TMZ, Saved by the Bell’s Mark-Paul Gosselaar, a.k.a Zach Morris, a.k.a your boyfriend in 1992 said, “We’ll see how [Girl Meets World does], maybe we’ll do a reunion as well.” Now, to be fair, this was a total off-the-cuff remark with absolutely no network promise behind it. Check out the official trailer for Jason Lockhart’s upcoming Hotel Arthritis movie. It is not often that one is able to see a collection of iconic stars in such a different light, but Hotel Arthritis provides just that opportunity. The film finds ways to “push the boundaries” of what is wrong and what is funny by meshing the bizarre with the fun, the old with the young, and the comedy with its horror.
Hotel Arthritis is a comedy/horror ready for its cult audience about a group of retirement home residents living in fear of a masked killer who stalks the halls of their creepy home.
“The colorful characters are what drives the film in this story. We’re meant to laugh with them and at them, both through their daily routines and alongside their nightmares.”
says director, Jason Lockhart.
